10:25 I noticed that Ninja stopped growling during the rinse activity. My guess is that both the warmth of the water and the pressure from it probably felt good on his arthritic bones.
10:32 thank you for acknowledging how STRONG they are 💀 sometimes helping cats literally feels like physically fighting them. he was obviously having mercy.
I have a 10 kg Maine Coon and I called a groomer because he had some mats behind the front legs that I struggle to brush, we couldnt manage even with two persons, even with some relaxing meds, he was so strong and hated it he bit her even through the protective gloves lmao. What a lil' bastard. So we had to bring him to the vet and she put him to sleep to shave these parts. I have two maine coons but this one, I can brush him everyday but he has soooo muccchhh undercoat that is crazy so there are always little mats at some places.
"Poor Ninja. Hated every minute of it, but I bet he feels so much better after." Only if it helped him get rid of some irritations. Cats appreciate when you help them, not when you do lots of things to them that have no benefit to them. Cats operate by smells and if you wash them and get rid of a lot of the smells they are in serious trouble with other cats in their neighbourhood until their own smell grows back.
It’s like she was recording some kind of ASMR video, and the concept just sounds hilarious “ASMR | Kitty Hissing and Growling For Relaxing and Falling Asleep”
So, seeing nobody say it: He did such a good job. 15 Years old, never been in that situation ... he stays very very calm. And i overall dont think, that he could not attack. To me it rather looks like he does definitly not like it ... but overall knows that its a good thing. And what I experienced: Sometimes cutting out the mates is way more easy and less stressful for the kitty, that beeing said for a 4 year old very fluffy cat :)
Yeah he was pretty chill about it. I would not dare to bring my cat to something that can stress him at 15 years old honestly. My friend had a cat like this that died from heart attack because it was too stressfull and he was too old. Since I heard that Ive been paranoid about it lol
oh you said it, and i completely agree, i wrote one comment kinda like yours he is so adorable just chat chat chat but at the end he knows its the best, sweet little old man
He's like my 16 year old black cat, who fortunately doesn't have arthritis. He doesn't like having his claws clipped, and growls and hisses when we do it, but doesn't fight back. We figure he's just expressing his opinion with bad language, and he's entitled to.
@@robertschmobert1But fear often leads to aggression. This cat is letting the groomer know in no uncertain terms, that he does not like what is happening.
My cat will nibble me when I trim her nails. Not bites, just very light nibbles. I don't doubt she WOULD bite but usually when she starts nibbling we finish the nail we're on give her a break, finish it later.
My mom’s last cat, Angel trusted us but hated everyone else after an incident involving our apartment being robbed. After that she’d sniff people out more than she ever used to. She lived to 20.
We have one of those. She is 13 and we are pretty sure she’ll make it to 20 just on anger. She goes by Baby Meow (kid named, he’s in college now) or Leevil, double E for extra evil.
My old man made it to 18. His mom was a stray and had him in our garage. He lived in our back yard and his "house" was the garage. I was the only one that could pet him. I had to ask him if he wanted some loving. If he laid down I knew it was safe, if not he would flick his tail and walk away. He was not mean just grumpy. I miss that silly cat even tho he was a grump.
I am a first time cat owner. I wasn't intending to have one but we found one and couldn't find an owner. Due to an... incident in the carry carrier in the car we had to bath her. She handled it OK, but we have decided to bath her once or twice a year, just to make sure it is something that doesn't freak her out too much. Sometimes you have to get animals used to things. Minor distress in the present can prevent major distress in the future.
You are so smart to do that. It will serve you well. I show cats so I bathed them weekly when showing them. I have never gotten scratched or hissed at because they know it's not torture.
@@AxelPoggers don’t do it weekly. Their skin is sensitive and their nature is to have some degree of aversion to water due to genetic disposition (they come from a desert’s cat). It might damage their skin barrier. Once a year is great, but not even necessary. Brushing though must be every day and as long as you do that, and they have no difficulties licking their fur, it will be clean and tidy
2:11 - I asked my own old man if he knew of the international law that stops old men from jumping down from grooming tables. He was unaware of this law, thank you for raising awareness
Ninja probably felt *so good* the rest of the evening and week after a nice bath, warm rinse, and having all that matting removed. You're a patient groomer. ❤
Old cats need help and I appreciate you risking a bite or scratch to make him more comfortable, even if he doesn't like the process. He looked great in the end, and I'm glad you got most of his matting out.
@@TheFalseShepphardYeah because the cat’s feelings will definitely be hurt by a little bit of online banter. Chill out a little, eh? It’s all in good fun.
The cat grooming videos are so suspenseful. With most dogs it's immediately like "this is the temperament of this dog for good or ill, I know what's about to happen" but with cats anything could happen at any moment. I'm on the edge of my seat for these.
Agreed. Some cats behave better with strangers than they do with their normal human servants. One of my cats strenuously objected when I tried trimming murder daggers and dealing with matting. When she was at the vet's office she was the perfect angel with a blinding halo and the vet and techs didn't believe she was really a Tasmanian devil in a cat suit.
My cat is the boldest, most human centric adventurer at home, she loves meeting new people and has no fear. Take her to the vet and she becomes a shaking, fear-pooping ball of terrified sadness. She hasn't had any bad experiences there either, its just coming out of her "territory" freaks her out I think.
My old lady cat is the same. She's normally pretty cranky and is only nice to me, but half the time she doesn't want anything to do with me now that she's older. But at the vet, she acts so cute and sweet. My mom ended up taking her for me once and she said my cat "made her sick" with how fake she was being lol
My 17 year old is the same. She's a squirmy booger at home when she need fluids, even on a sedative. But between being at a strange place, and knowing the vet techs wont flinch like we do, she'll cooperate.
Unfortunately my cat is not the same 😂 we took him in for x rays because his leg was really hurting him (just a sprain) and he was so spicy he needed to be sedated LMAO
Bathed all my cats and Huskies , they loved it. They would walk into the shower on their own. Their own spa day, undivided attention! I could hold each of my cats in my arms as I bathed them with no scratching or fussing. I guess they just learned to trust me. Missed them all!
I remember being about 3 or 4 years old, and combing out some knots in our cat's belly fur. I was told that he was sad so he wasn't caring for himself. I used a regular hair comb for it. Kitty just let me push him over when he was loafing around, and start working the knots out. Didn't get scratched or growled at, not entirely sure how. Kitty did start taking care of himself afterwards though 😊
So my groomer explained to me that mats pull on the skin and essentially your cat is slowly being "scalped". Because they love being clean and your kitty was depressed and not grooming. The feeling of being scratched and having all that painful matting brushed out probably felt better than having it pulling at his skin. So afterwards he was so comfortable and felt motivated to clean himself again.
You being 3 or 4 could've had something to do with it too. There are many pets who seem aware children are basically human kittens and will let them get away with the kind of stuff that they would never let the adults get away with. Speaking as someone who would flop all over my childhood cat like he was my personal stuffed animal, when otherwise he was a grumpy old man lol
@@melimsah yeah i’ve seen cats full on let children push them around in baby strollers and treat them like a plush toy when they’d never let an adult get away with it lol. it’s kinda funny cos i feel like i don’t see dogs or other domesticated animals do this as much, i wonder what it is about cats that makes them more prone to it… maybe the communal kitten care thing?
When I was little, Dad was in the Royal Canadian Air Force (as it was known back then). I had a black tomcat named - yeah, so original - Tommy. We lived on a very small base in Northern Ontario and the base commander would call the house quite often for Dad to come pick us up. I would dress Tommy in doll clothes, give him my baby brothers bottle with milk in it, put him in my dolly's carriage and go to find Dad if he was late - in my little 3 yr old time-telling abilities. Back in the 60s, it wasn't unusual to see all the little ones outside with nobody worrying if we hadn't been seen because we were all off playing together. Mom even has pictures of Tommy and I outside, him allowing me to torment him instead of my dolly 😊
I remember the last few months on my 17 year old black cat. She just couldn't clean herself anymore. I bathe her, very gently and groomed her. She hated it but still would allow it, as i was very gentle. She died in my arms age almost 18.
What a lot of fur! He really did need that groom. Watching you comb out his little porcupine-quill mats was very satisfying. Loved listening to him grumble! I think he invented a few new unprintable terms for the lady with the bathtub and the comb, but he's gotta be feeling better with all that extra fur gone. Thanks for sharing!! :)
I love the remark on the good health at it's age, it reminded me of my grandparents cat. They had an 18 year old cat that still went outside half of the day, running and even hunting. He was super active and really sweet too, always wanting to be pet when around. And one day, a couple years ago now, it kinda gave us signs that it was over, and one night he just passed quietly. truely the greatest cat I've ever seen.
He reminds me of Benson, my 17 year old black cat I just recently lost due to kidney issues. He was fearless - He loved new and exciting things and places. I kept him brushed out, he liked it as long as it didn't go on too long. He was such a good cat - He never scratched, bit, never ruined furniture, never peed outside his box, he was simply amazing.
@djonsto2 Hi, friend. I'm sorry for you having lost your sweet Benson. He was a pearl. See, if we treat animals correctly, they are very civilized and loving. Way beyond what many humans are. Much love.
I am officially convinced that if a client brought in a spicy mountain lion, Vanessa would be able to not only groom it, but could convince it that Tubes are the best and smelling like sugarcane is the best.
i know this is a joke, but i’ve worked briefly with baby mountain lions. 6 weeks they could be held by us with some angry meowing - it was a pair of litter mates. the other baby was older & unrelated, 12 weeks! still very cute and small, about the size of an australian shepherd. you better believe we weren’t touching that one 😂 fed him milk soaked chicken on a pizza peel. he made angry cat sounds while eating.
So grumpy but also has to feel a million times better! Cats crack me up! They have such attitudes! We have a apx 4 year old that used to be a stray/ part of a feral colony, that now is mostly an indoor cat. I managed to cut his nails yesterday, he acted like he was going to kill me the whole time. But I just did it as fast as possible, tried to stay as calm as possible, and surprise - he was all talk too.
The single best comb I've found for cats who do not like brushing is the Japanese-created Philocomb. I saw someone who used it on feral cats at shelters and got it for my brush-resistant cat early on and now she demands brushing multiple times a day. The curved teeth are made of resin and apparently just feel fantastic to cats. Not a de-matting comb, but after a cat is de-matted, it is great at maintaining their coat.
Vanessa is 100% correct about everything she has said regarding cats. Bathing them young is absolutely essential. When they get elderly and can't groom themselves, they absolutely need human help. My cat at 18 years needed to be helped with his grooming. He was pretty placid, though most cats are not.
exactly. and i think some people assume the stress of a bath is worse for a cat than having unclean fur and skin, but honestly its really not in most cases. the oil and dirt that cakes up and causes matting is sooo much more stressful and painful to live with all the time, than to get an occasional bath.
Pretty much. Then again a lot of people have pets and aren't educated enough to make these calls. We really need to get rid of "never bathe cats" stigma. Desensitization is probably the BEST method for cats and dogs when it comes to these situations. Start them early even if they don't really need it, that way when it becomes necessary, they're not likely to worry as much. As the owner it's your job to think ahead.
@@nirablackfire2792I fully agree. Idk how many cat extremist I've seen say "my cat is 10 years old and has NEVER been bathe or had its nails clipped and is doing just fine" like that doesn't mean every cat will be the same. I've seen kitties with coats just like ninja that were in rough shape since the owner never bathe them and when they needed it, it was an extremely stressful situation. Also seen cats nails grow into their paws from not being trimmed. If you're not finding ways to help your kitty groom, it's up to us as owners to help them
honestly, this old boy was pretty nice ! he growled to express his discomfort but wasn't aggressive at all ! might be because he is too tired and old for hissy fight, but he was really a good boy !
You did an AMAZING job! Ninja needed that groom so badly. Now just to educate the owners on different tools that will help them to brush their elderly cat with greater ease and effectiveness. Such a great video to remind kitten owners to get cats used to grooming early on. BRAVO!
my cats responded really well to baths just starting with lukewarm water about an inch deep, and a cup.. just put them in up to their toes and then slowly pour the water higher and higher up their body. it did not take them long to get used to that and they would tolerate shampoo and getting rinsed and everything after awhile, one cat actually like it and got excited about getting towel dried like a dog would. it was so simple to do it that way but it really helped.
I'm not sure if its available in Canada, but in the US a new product recently came out called Solensia, its a once monthly injection for feline arthritis and its worked wonders for my 14y Olive. She cleans herself more now and is jumping back up on tables and windowsills as she always loved to do before her arthritis started. She acts like a kitten again! She's been on it for a bit over a year I believe.
My 17 year old Mr. Midnight started solensia this year and it's been wonderful for him. He had completely stopped grooming himself, and was laying on the floor more often. After starting it, he's back to jumping up on things and acting like a young kitten again. It is kind of pricey where I am, but it's so worth it to see him feeling better.
Solensia has been a miracle for my 8 yr old Maine Coon Poppy. She's had arthritis since she was 3 and it's been a challenge keeping her comfortable. I give her Adequan shots every ten days and she gets a shot of Solensia monthly. The difference in her since starting Solensia is remarkable. I've groomed both my MCs weekly since they were 12 weeks old but now I'm wishing I'd started bathing them too. Thankfully they both can still groom themselves.
Solensia was a godsend for my 15 year old kitty with moderate arthritis. I was really resistant at first because it cost $92 per shot and they have to be given monthly. I used gabapentin at first. It worked, but Solensia works *much* better. When I saw the improvement in my kitty after just 2 shots I couldn't justify going back to gabapentin. It's like she was 10 years younger.
My fifteen-year-old boy Blackjack started on Solensia two months ago. He's like a new cat! He's going back up and down stairs, jumping, and cuddling again 💜
What I love about this channel is that you explain your technique in a very well detailed manner making it easy for the viewers to understand why you do certain things that could make people question your technique.
Ninja going all ham on the Churru treat after his groom was so cute 🥺 I hope he’s a lot more comfortable now, even if the grooming itself wasn’t the most pleasant experience for him.
Aww, what a cute old man. He did amazing since he's never been bathed and groomed before. You are so sweet and caring with your furry clients. You can really sense how to incorporate their restrictions or limitations and still result in making them look and feel better. 🥰🤗🐾🐈⬛️ Ninja is beautiful.
Poor old chap; I dread to think what feline swear words he was using! He was so good not to attack you, just letting you know how he felt about it all. Hopefully his owners will be able to stay on top of his coat, and also hopefully he’ll get more used to it.
Such a good point you made that I never considered! Sure for the first 10-15 years they don’t NEED grooming but one day they will and it’s better for everyone if they’re already used to it ❤ Thank you
That "air muzzle" is a trip! I have never seen one of those before. When I had cats growing up, we had the standard old-school muzzle. Only had to use it on one cat though.
She’s amazing !!! I love how respectful she is with each individual cat. She calls this older gentleman Sir” and explains everything she is doing to him. She’s patient, skilled, and quickly develops the kind of rapport with the cats you’d expect from someone who’s known them since kittenhood.
Poor old fellow, he sounds like an angry motor boat. I wonder if the owners could talk to their vet about pain management for the old guy, might make things a tad easier on him
Have an 18+ yr old fellow. Horrible arthritis. He gets adequan, monthly solensia shot, twice a day gabapentin. He goes to animal rehab for PT, cold laser, acupuncture and now shock wave therapy. It keeps him comfortable and has preserved muscle function. We also do daily massage. His stifles are about 3x the size of normal cats. Also have pet stairs for easier access, and constant access to heating pad. He’s a mellow, easy going old boy. What we do for those we love.
Thanks for the video! My cat just turned 2 and I've only had to partially bathe her (legs bc she stepped in her poop😂). I think it was nice to have the reminder that even though she does a good job grooming now, I should get her used to some more bathing. She is really good with letting me clip her nails. I need to work on getting her used to the bath water and brushing her teeth so she stays healthy😊
Even though he was softly growling during the bath, his body language said he kinda liked the sprayer 😸 I wonder if it was a nice massage for his sore bones. He’s a good boy ❤
Honestly for an old man experiencing his first bath and blow dry he did pretty well! Yes he was mad hahah but the fact you were able to bathe him and blow dry him is impressive
That’s what I came here to say! Such a variety of pitch and tone, as well as things that actually made me think he was snoring, till he proved he was definitely awake, plus almost a whistling tone. So fascinating!
@@julieobrien4056 Since I am a singer, I don't know how I missed that, because usually I pick up on such things. Have you heard of The Kiffness? Talk about picking up on such things!
OK- opening notes- F down to C#, up to F#, back down to F, down to c# and slide even lower. You...are...RIGHT! Thank you for "a-tuning" my ear to this! Kiffness would have a field day with this cat.
Your patience and persistence when dealing with an older and spicy cat is great. I like how you talk to him the whole time which I am sure helps him to deal with the indignity of grooming. Thank you for always putting the furry client first.
100% true. He never attempted to scratch or bite either. I'm sure there was some discomfort but mostly to his ego. It's a very unworthy situation for an old dude. I think he handled it wonderfully. Arthritis makes it hard to reach an itch and his skin will be grateful without the matting.
Yeah. And it's good when a cat is being expressive. It's a show that they're mentally there, physically ok enough to expend the energy to be chaotic and express their needs. After owning a very special cat, I've come to have a different perspective of them when they don't like something and may scratch, bite, growl, hiss etc. It's them telling you they don't like something and it's a good sign of their growth, personality and overall health. It was stressful for him, but I was happy that the old man's still got his sass. When they lose it, it's normally a sign that they're reaching their time to cross the rainbow bridge. Usually. If it's old age. They have emotions just like us, and it's good to express them. It shows that he's still kicking very well ❤
I love that. He is saying "it's a good job for your sake, that we don't live in the same house. As you would be sleeping with one eye open for the rest of my/your life"
I have to give Ninja a lot of credit for being a great kitty 🐈⬛ while being groomed. He had a bunch of knots that I know hurt badly as they were being pulled out and he did not scratch or bite. It hurt my heart to hear him in pain but I could see he understood his groomer was helping him. I give props to the groomer for your patience and care while grooming Ninja. You did a great job. Plus you did your best to make sure he was comfortable as possible and gave him breaks where needed. Yes, I agree cats take longer to care for, but they are so worth it in the end. Ninja looked relieved when it was over 😂and he looked happier than he did from the beginning of the video. This is my first time seeing this channel. I look forward to seeing more videos from here.
Cats really are absolutely nothing like dogs. They have completely different behaviour and responses to similar things. A lot less patient, for one, haha. They're both great companions, just very different.
Good example is Dogs are like having an extroverted best friend, Cats are like having an INTROverted best friend :) Dogs are playful and want to be around you always no matter what and are in great moods, Cats will cuddle and keep you company for a certain period then go off on their own to recharge and take care of themselves and also tend to switch moods more. Both pets have different things to offer
Even at 18 or 19 my old lady kitty would be STRONG if she didn't like what was happening. The vet didn't believe us when we said that burritoing her didn't work to give her medication. We brought a towel and her to the vet and said "okay, show us what we're doing wrong." They tried. She got her front legs out and FOUGHT. Afterwards we were like "we told you." The vet, while breathing heavily: "..just bring her in for shots every few months." Us: thank you that's what we wanted.
My Trisha passed a month shy of her 20th birthday. but in her teens she had my roommates' huskies terrified of her. She was a whopping 7 lbs of Queenly wrath for people being silly in her presence. We also had an incident when I accidentally scheduled her with the vet she didn't like when it as time to do her 6 month lab work. the vet took her off to the lab down the hall. She put up such a ruckus I'm sure she cleared the waiting room. When they brought her back, a tech had her burritoed in a towel, ears flat and growling. The vet was like "She wouldn't let us draw blood."
@@samsilly123456 I used to refer to it as her dragon face. my Trisha was a Tortie and was full of Tortitude. her ears would go flat and out to the side and she would just growl. I called her my cranky old lady. I loved her dearly.
All the dandruff 😢 my torti had that in her late teens as well. Seems like a possible early sign they're not grooming the same as they once did. I'm somehow always amazed that such a small animal can produce SO MUCH shed!
I hadnt really noticed it before. But Nothing but respect for your moving the mic closer to his face whenever he is making noises. Love the attention purely for our benefit.
Ok people out there with all your questioning….professionals project a vibe that is different than the owner. When the owner does it, you communicate your anxiety and intimate feelings to your pet who can read you like a book. A skilled pro’s whole demeanour radiates calm, controlled, secure handling and the animal reacts differently. Pretend you have to give a needle to your own child. And then compare that to an experienced health professional. So respect is the name of the game.
So true. Plus anxiety from leaning over a tub feeling that back and knee pain while preventing them from jump out 😂 And if it helps anyone, I learned that closing the shower curtain behind you helped prevent most of my 2 cats' jumping attempts.
For sure. Tho, when you do have to stick a needle in your pet on the regular, you learn how to be professional about it. I thought I was going to faint the first time I gave my current special needs pet a shot (partly b/c she'd had bad drug reactions before) and now it's just a normal part of our week. But yes, people should respect and aim to emulate rather than fretting so much.
I have had to give subs fluids to three of my babies. It gets easier the more you do it. And the reward of your little ones feeling better is huge. I can tell you a little story. I broke my leg a few years ago and had surgery on it the next day. I had to have twice daily injections of a blood thinner to prevent clots for 2 weeks. I was told to inject myself in the stomach...WAIT, WHAT??? So, my sweet 45 year old son volunteered to do the injections in the back of my arm. The thing is, he faints at the sight of blood!❤ He managed through both weeks and only saw a drop of blood twice. I am pretty plump so lots of fat tissue there. My point is, you do what is necessary.
9:10 is so spot on. If you are going to bath them, start doing it while they're young. I heard a story where an older cat that had never bathed before, was bathed by a pet sitter. The cat died later that night because his little heart couldn't handle the stress 😢
so, what you're saying is I should start to bathe my 3 yo who I adopted in February? ok. I.dont want her to be stressed by bathing and grooming when she's older
Cats don’t have to be bathed. It’s no big deal. You can brush them and you can also wipe them down with a moist towel w a little natural soap then dry afterwards.
@@norakatSometimes they’re going to need a real bath. For instance if they fall or roll into something dangerous for them to consume! Or in my case, one of my cats was sick, had explosive diarrhea on the floor, tried to jump ip on a side table, and promptly fell back into her own extcrament. Honistly, she was really chill with the bath/detachable shower head, probably because she had some idea that I was going to make that very bad situation better.
The minute you said this cat's name... I instantly wanted to cry. That was the name of my 14-year old tuxedo cat who passed away earlier this year. So nice to see this senior with the same name be treated so respectfully.
He has respiratory issues as well, doesn't he? I wonder if it would help calm down cats with arthritis if you would put a pillow or mat or something else soft and warm on the table. There are ones that can be easily cleaned. I had a special mattresslike pillow for my cat with severe arthritis and he loved that so much. Made him feel a lot better.
I'm very glad I have my 15-year-old cat on arthritis medication. He is a long hair and still has a wonderful clean mat free haircoat. He is used to being bushed with a comb lucky, so if he ever does get mats, he will be used to it
those sad breathing noises at 15:02 are really cute. poor old man was thinking to himself how on earth he deserves such cruel mistreatment ^^ tho he looked like he did already feel a bit better and the tube in the end seemed to calm that upset customer quite well. thank you for risking your hands to help that sweet old kitty : )
"I was framed, I tells ya. Why did this have to happen to me?? I didn't even get a fair trial! Cruel and unusual punishment, I don't even know what I did! ...OOH nom noms!"
Ninja looks like my Midnight who passed away in 06. The difference is my kitty knew how to turn on the bathroom sink facet and got herself some fresh water and would stand under the stream and give herself a bath. Nope, I kid you not. She would actually do this. Unfortunately, she never learned to turn off the water.
I have had 3 cats. Two were long haired. They needed baths even as kittens. They don't like it, but just like dog owners,, the owner needs to let them know it's going to occur no matter what. .They will be much healthier as they age. Start when they are kittens!
I feel like Ninja is just the cat version of a husky. He's just singing the song of his people. Despite all the noise, he's actually behaved and handled everything really well. So far. I'm not at the end yet 😅
I had an old cat, Bill, who wasn't grooming himself. When I had to help him, he bit me, but since he'd lost his teeth it didn't hurt. Watching you with Ninja brought back a lot of memories. Once Ninja gets home and has a nap, he realize he feels so much better. You did a fabulous job.
The sweetest angry kitty I have ever seen. I bet he feels so much better now. You made some great points on why it is important to get both cats and dogs used to grooming when young.
It's not just grooming that they might not do like they should when they get old. I have a 21 year old cat, and in the last year or so, she hasn't been burying her waste. She also licks mats into her fur after being brushed. Gonna look for those cat licks. 😊
My parents' cat is sort of like ninja. She's overweight, skittish, prissy, and getting up there in age so there's spot on her body she can't clean, like her lower back right above her tail, and she has really bad dander/dandruff and her hair is almost oily. My mom is horribly allergic (but loves her anyway) and my dad has arthritis in his hands so brushing her on the reg is difficult for them, and I've been trying to find a groomer who knows what they're doing with cats and won't stress her out too badly. I thought about just trying to give her a bath my self, but I kept reading it was bad for cats, but she NEEDS a deep clean. This video is really helpful because it gives me more of an idea of what to do, as well as a source to show my parents like "yeah, this is where she's at." They also NEED to put her on a diet, but my parents don't have the willpower to tell her no when she will BULLY THEM TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH for food.
I have my own very spicy void and agree 100 percent with you about the diet and proper food, but the oily fur may be because of an underlying medical condition, not just not grooming. My 19-year-old girl looks oily, but she has hyperthyroidism and chronic kidney disease. Both are managed, and she gets subQ fluids because of her kidneys. Her coat always looks SO much better after getting her fluids, not oily. I recommend getting a routine senior panel done on your parents' kitty to see if there's any underlying issues. As for the grooming part, they now make waterless shampoo and grooming wipes for cats. Just get the unscented ones. You can google which brands are recommended. Best of luck to you!
If their car is matted, just buzz her whole coat then give her a bath for the dandruff. And get her to the vet for a blood panel and get her on lower calorie cat food.
God I'm so glad my cat loves brushing. He's almost 17 and has 0 medical issues and can groom himself perfectly fine, but he sheds a lot so we need to brush him weekly. Every time I reach for the brush, he runs towards me and meows emphatically for me to brush him. He purrs while I brush him, it's so cute. Baths however are a no-go. We got him at age 11 and he'd never been bathed before and we have tried a couple times.
I've found that Tangle Teezer brushes are great for regular grooming. They have soft bristles so they're less likely to snag on scabs or irritate dry skin, and cats seem to really enjoy being brushed with them.
Very true! I had a cat (had to put him down at 2,5 years old due to complete kidney failure) that, even though he still groomed himself, needed semi regular baths to help clean him up because he had a condition that caused chronic inflammation on the inside of his mouth, so when he groomed himself, his fur got covered in grime
My senior cat crossed the rainbow bridge at 20 about 2 months ago, and she had trouble grooming starting around 17 years old. She also had arthritis, a heart murmur, and hypertension, so I didn't want to stress her out even more taking her to a groomer. Your videos helped me to figure out how to groom her at home in the last few years to keep her comfortable and not cause her too much stress. Thank you for taking on difficult and senior cats. They need it and deserve it! ❤
Seeing Ninja is like seeing my 16 yr old baby, Faith. Sadly i had to help her cross the 🌈 bridge three weeks ago tomorrow after she suddenly quit eatig, drinking or using her box. They could have mopped the clinic floors with the buckets full of tears i cried that day. Fly free swetheart, mama loves you and wishes you were here. See you again some happy day
@pamfonk4052 Much love, dear Pam. It hurts so much to lose your beloved baby. I know, I've had 8. A piece of your heart goes with each one of them. Bless you. I'm sure your dear Faith is smiling at you.

Daughter of the owner here! We are all delighted at his transformation!! ❤️ We are also grateful for the help in finding better tools to deal with the matting. We adopted Ninja when I was a preteen and he was my cuddle bug til I left for school. In his old age, he decided that Dad, the allergic one who isn't that fond of cats, was his new person. Now he visits Dad everyday on the couch for his daily pets. He's a sweetheart with the tiniest squeakiest meow when he's happy to see you. The only other time these growls come out is when I bring my baby cats over for a visit - he asserts that he is the boss of the house, through noise only. 😂
He's just a retired ninja. Five years ago, he would have been parkouring all over the place, and you'd be the one taking a bath.

Only if it helped him get rid of some irritations. Cats appreciate when you help them, not when you do lots of things to them that have no benefit to them. Cats operate by smells and if you wash them and get rid of a lot of the smells they are in serious trouble with other cats in their neighbourhood until their own smell grows back.

Ninja is actually being very compliant given his age and grandeur status in the family home.

He's like my 16 year old black cat, who fortunately doesn't have arthritis. He doesn't like having his claws clipped, and growls and hisses when we do it, but doesn't fight back. We figure he's just expressing his opinion with bad language, and he's entitled to.
Right! My Stormy is the same way. Learned the bad language from me I'm afraid
Growling and hissing is just a sign of fear, not necessarily aggression.

Sometimes you have to get animals used to things. Minor distress in the present can prevent major distress in the future.

The cat grooming videos are so suspenseful. With most dogs it's immediately like "this is the temperament of this dog for good or ill, I know what's about to happen" but with cats anything could happen at any moment. I'm on the edge of my seat for these.
agreed! 😂
Yes 😂
Well said!
Yep. My old man was untouchable but loved the vet… whose wisdom gave him an extra 3 years!
He’s just a grumpy old man voicing his opinion. He could have inflicted major harm but didn’t.
That's what my wife says.
I loved his growling commentary to all the cat listeners out there!!! What a great kitty!!! 😍
Incredible restraint. Gentlemanly, even
Bathed all my cats and Huskies , they loved it. They would walk into the shower on their own. Their own spa day, undivided attention! I could hold each of my cats in my arms as I bathed them with no scratching or fussing. I guess they just learned to trust me. Missed them all!
Do you remember how old when you gave them their first bath?
I remember being about 3 or 4 years old, and combing out some knots in our cat's belly fur. I was told that he was sad so he wasn't caring for himself. I used a regular hair comb for it.
Kitty just let me push him over when he was loafing around, and start working the knots out. Didn't get scratched or growled at, not entirely sure how.
Kitty did start taking care of himself afterwards though 😊
Sounds like he was too sad to be angry at you
So my groomer explained to me that mats pull on the skin and essentially your cat is slowly being "scalped".
Aw ): At least she went surrounded by love
My girl passed at that age too and she looked just like ninja!
Sorry for your loss, very blessed cat Linda
Sorry for your loss, i fear that with my 16 year old boy, hes good other than mild kidney issues.
"Unprintable terms" - love it! ❤😂
He sounds like a special and great cat!❤

i know this is a joke, but i’ve worked briefly with baby mountain lions.
Ninja is like an old grandpa. He complains about everything and anything just because.
I imagine every single bone and joint hurts so this ‘rigamarole’ isn’t helping.

I'm going to find it right now. Anything to get our elderly girl to accept brushing!

I love that you stop brushing and address him when he gives you the "signal". You're in tune with his body language. You've got the gift!
Vanessa is 100% correct about everything she has said regarding cats. Bathing them young is absolutely essential. When they get elderly and can't groom themselves, they absolutely need human help. My cat at 18 years needed to be helped with his grooming. He was pretty placid, though most cats are not.
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Right. So we all get old and then we can't hack it anymore. - From Trainspotting
Oh, my cat is super spicy (I adopted her already adult) and has short hair. I never thought it would be necessary… oh my, I’ll have to start slow 😱
exactly. and i think some people assume the stress of a bath is worse for a cat than having unclean fur and skin, but honestly its really not in most cases. the oil and dirt that cakes up and causes matting is sooo much more stressful and painful to live with all the time, than to get an occasional bath.
My applause 👏 Very well said!
Great groom, You took all the time needed for this senior kitty.🐈⬛ That was a huge accomplishment!

Have an 18+ yr old fellow. Horrible arthritis. He gets adequan, monthly solensia shot, twice a day gabapentin. He goes to animal rehab for PT, cold laser, acupuncture and now shock wave therapy. 100% true. He never attempted to scratch or bite either. I'm sure there was some discomfort but mostly to his ego. It's a very unworthy situation for an old dude. I think he handled it wonderfully. Arthritis makes it hard to reach an itch and his skin will be grateful without the matting.
True. The 1st thing they do is stop eating when unwell. Us too.
It shows that he's still kicking very well ❤
Yeah he was just grumpy
He’s giving “You’re lucky I’m not 10 years younger. I’d be on you like a rainbow on an oil slick.” energy. 😂
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
Well dogs are pack animals, which means they are used to follow authority. For cats, its a cats world and we are just allowed to life in it :p
Uh,, Cats typically do not enjoy nor tolerate WATER in comparison to Dogs. But I agree, great companions (i.e. Shadow, Mr. Blue).
Afterwards we were like "we told you." The vet, while breathing heavily: "..just bring her in for shots every few months."
Us: thank you that's what we wanted.
My cat never let's me cut her nails or give her any pills. But at the vet she is a very sweet shy lady, almost no opposition at all.😮
@@mimisor66 my kitty was only nice if they took her away from us 😂
@@vampg8r oh when they're in an angry burrito they're so cute tho! My kitty lived to be almost 21. Such a long time yet not long enough, am I right?
@@samsilly123456 I used to refer to it as her dragon face. my Trisha was a Tortie and was full of Tortitude. her ears would go flat and out to the side and she would just growl. I called her my cranky old lady. I loved her dearly.
All the dandruff 😢 my torti had that in her late teens as well. Seems like a possible early sign they're not grooming the same as they once did.
I'm somehow always amazed that such a small animal can produce SO MUCH shed!
animals get dandruff?? i thought that was just dirt😔😔
😮😢
so, what you're saying is I should start to bathe my 3 yo who I adopted in February?
@@autumn7157Been there. Not a great day...

This is Mayo in negative color scale. 😂

It’s Spicy Mayo!!!!!

The minute you said this cat's name... I instantly wanted to cry. That was the name of my 14-year old tuxedo cat who passed away earlier this year. So nice to see this senior with the same name be treated so respectfully.
Vanessa: “Don’t try to kill me…” 😂😂
Says the pet groomer to a cat aptly named Ninja…
...and then @1:30: "Hi Ninja!.....Please do not live up to your name!"
That's a great idea!
That sweet little squeak when you started brushing his chest melted my heart. ❤
Read my mind exactly!
Both of my cats did that, although Oliver at 18 lbs. of solid muscle, had trouble fitting into the bathroom sink.
I always thought my cat was the only one to sit under the faucet, she loved the kitchen sink, would look out the window while sunning her self 😊😊
Oh, your cat knew how to turn off the water, but it was more making YOU do it.
14:11 that little sound when ninja got close to the microphone was so adorable, and it melted my heart❤❤❤❤❤
Love that you're grooming an old kitty 🖤
Baby sounds like a wee puppy
There's a Turkish vet's channel that I also watch, they add subtitles for angry cats lol.

Having two 17 years old cat who I bath and brush , I love the care you gave ninja.
Thank you.
I was born in Friday the 13th so all black cats are my cousins. Thank for taking care of my old cousin Ninja.
Do you sleep under a ladder too?
This is cool asf
This video is really helpful because it gives me more of an idea of what to do, as well as a source to show my parents like "yeah, this is where she's at."
They also NEED to put her on a diet, but my parents don't have the willpower to tell her no when she will BULLY THEM TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH for food.
I love the foaming duck soap/conditioner dispenser!!! Oh my goodness...I just heard his growl with the snort attached!!!
I've found that Tangle Teezer brushes are great for regular grooming. They have soft bristles so they're less likely to snag on scabs or irritate dry skin, and cats seem to really enjoy being brushed with them.
Some cats even young need baths. Not all cats are great self groomers especially the long haired breeds. I see lots of brown water coming out.
And even young cats can have bad diarrhea accidents.. 😅
Very true! I had a cat (had to put him down at 2,5 years old due to complete kidney failure) that, even though he still groomed himself, needed semi regular baths to help clean him up because he had a condition that caused chronic inflammation on the inside of his mouth, so when he groomed himself, his fur got covered in grime
Your patience and calmness with him is so soothing to me watching this video.
You did a great job! Good on you for working so hard to make this guy comfortable. xx
The little 'Efffh' right into the mic as you told him he had to stay. I'm glad you could help this poor old man get all that hair out
Seeing Ninja is like seeing my 16 yr old baby, Faith. See you again some happy day
I'm so sorry for your loss. 😿
Really sorry to hear about your loss
Big hugs. It's never easy. ❤
@pamfonk4052 Much love, dear Pam. It hurts so much to lose your beloved baby. I know, I've had 8. A piece of your heart goes with each one of them. Bless you. I'm sure your dear Faith is smiling at you.
What a sweetie he is, and you are so very patient. You already know, I’m sure, but you are PRO!!
This one got me to subscribe. Thank you for sticking with it to take care of this old cat.
I imagine if the bath water was the right temp, it would feel amazing on his achy joints.
Good Ninja…using his words instead of violence! And brave Vanessa!!
4:14 i heard "Wrath Tub" for a moment 🤣
Accurate assessment though.
Ninja looks like a new cat after a day at the spa. So beautiful! Wish could see his owner's response. Vanessa shows such professionalism plus truly cares for this pussycat. Have always been cautious about what person touches my pets. Never an angry or nonchalant person & they are out there.
Thank you again for a teaching moment. 😊
