    Gordon is following Anthony's foot step. He has been truly respectful of culture and their diversity. That's what makes him different. All other michellen star chef always bask in their own glory and confined their own ideas but to learn from the world and world ideology is completely different.
    Gordon is actually following British Empire legacy as well, learn and conquer but with food.
    It's his love note to the world food and culture.
    You can hate him but can't ignore him. A true collaboration would be with Anthony but he is not here. Watching Gordon being so down to earth sometimes with food and culture fills with joy.

      he's a businessman. He's doing shows. Of course he has to "respect" other cultures and their diversity. It's scripted. Why don't other Michelin star chef do the same? Because they're not TV people. They have their own restaurant and that's it.
      You think if Gordon didn't have a TV show to produce, he'd travel to the mountains to learn about their recipes on his own time, with his own money?

    Suprised the monks eat fish. Is this a cultural thing where fish are not considered 'meat'? It was the same in Europe in the pre-modern times. The Cathars were known as vegetarians but ate fish.

    • @alfiesmith2510
      @alfiesmith2510 2 года назад +4

      @Censored Opinions Hello, I didn't think Buddhist monks are vegetarians because of Western cultural views. I wouldn't consider myself 'buddhist' but I've read and learned a lot about Buddhism and adopt in my everyday life when I can. One of the ideas I learned is that all life is caught in the cycle of suffering and that compassion (in the Buddhist sense) is the alleviation/prevention of suffering. So a lot of Buddhists do not eat meat to avoid causing the suffering of animals.

    • @zawwin1846
      @zawwin1846 2 года назад +15

      @@alfiesmith2510 You are correct that we try to be compassionate and reduce the amount of suffering. The problem is that the monks live off the community with alms. To help reduce the strain on the community, you eat what they can provide. However, there is a huge asterisk in that there are meats that are off limits no matter what like elephant, human meat, lion, etc. Monks also cannot eat the meat if they know that if the animal was specifically killed for them. The meat is seen as sustenance and would have gone to waste.

    • @TheChamp531

      They eat what is given. Bhikshu does not choose. Food is not their main aim. To leave perception, you have to learn to accept everything for what it is. See reality. Food is an energy source, that is all. Provides means to do what they are born to do. Same for everyone but we are stuck with perception. Everything is the same thing, but we live in so much sense of separation that we like to attach meanings to things. So that our idea of identity is protected. Long story: people ordained as monks (especially in Laos where it is filmed) are supposed to devoted themselves to reach Nirvana: to understand and get rid of all desires. To be overtly emotional, happy or sad, is seen as being influenced by emotions and desires (this can be intepreted to steer away from commenting about taste, because it requires desire to comment such things but I digress). • @sparklepawz1185
      @sparklepawz1185 2 года назад +9

      Because it's a religion and custom that's so old it was probably formed since before the US was even founded. Back then even the most highly trained doctors used sesame oil as an antiseptic. Of course back then they wouldn't know that alcohol is burned away in cooking. Not to mention, using alcohol in cooking is rare in Asia, to the point where I'm almost convinced it didn't happen until European techniques were introduced. So you take all that into account and should be able to understand that "oh so alcohol is forbidden and since the custom is ancient, people back then probably thought that even if you couldn't get drunk from eating food cooked with alcohol, some semblance of it still existed within the food so they would forbid that as well. And even though we now know better, they kept that custom in order to preserve the tradition in its purest form."
