Donovan was always my favorite folk singer. Saw him here in Seattle - must be almost 50 years ago. I turn 70 in two weeks. How did that happen? Forever Young.
Was listening to Donovan since I was 6 months old, yikes now I’m 60. My late parents have the most interesting vinyl collection. They were true beatniks💜☮️
A very great performance with two of the best performers Donovan and Jimmy Page. When this song came out in 1965 or 66 I was 10 or 11 years old. Who’s still listening? I’ve heard it for many years on the radio I still enjoy and I’m 68 years old and will continue to listen. Donovan had many great songs.
This excerpt was on Jimmy Page's website "on this day .." June 3rd 2011. I played with Donovan at the Royal Albert Hall Donovan asked me if I would join him at the Royal Albert Hall to play the original version of 'Sunshine Superman', as he planned to recreate the Sunshine Superman album with more added textures to the original orchestration by John Cameron. The night was truly memorable, an absolute triumph for Donovan and John Cameron. I put my amp out of the way backstage behind the orchestra so I could turn up without it bleeding into the orchestral balance. I also came on at the end of the show when Sunshine Superman was reprieved with the orchestra, and on 'Mellow Yellow' with all the bells and whistles. Well done Donovan!
I met Jimmy Page this night when I was like 14 - he was the nicest guy ever. He stopped his conversation with Donovan to say hello to me when I was basically pulling at his jacket going "Hey Jimmy....Jimmy!!!"
How awesome is this? One of the greatest musicians in the world just as happy to be in the background playing a single note as he is to play an entire concert as the lead of his own band.
Donovan invented his own genius of sound and style. Some people like to knock the Bee Gees and Donovan. I'm glad to realize they are some of the best singer songwriters of all time.
@Frank Perry, yeah, don't knock Donovan, i remember reading that he was a huge Dylan fan & then Dylan dissed him when asked by a reporter what he thot of Donovan, man, i love a lot of Dylans music/lyrics, but there was no need to say that shit, just ego. 🙏💜🕯️Donovan🌱🐾👣🌿🕊️🌎🔔
I think the whole world should WEAR YOUR LOVE ❤ LIKE HEAVEN! He was the HURDY GURDY MAN! People don't realize the influence DONOVAN had on the Beatles. He basically taught them his finger picking style when they were all on retreat in India with the Maharishi along with the Beach Boys, Twiggy and her sister Prudence. If you listen to the 50th Anniversary White Album, the ESHER demo sessions you can hear that many of the songs started as fingerpicking songs, before they were developed and finished. Some of them remained as fingerpicking GEMS - DEAR PRUDENCE, JULIA, MOTHER NATURES SON, Beginning of Happiness is Warm Gun. All influenced by Donovan the SUNSHINE SUPERMAN!
I still get a bit of a chill as I did some 56 years ago when I first heard Donovan's cover of Mick Softley's "The War Drags On". A powerful song in uncertain times that made a lot of us think.
I just saw this & I am blown away. The greatest guitarist/studio musician ever backing up another great writer/musician.He's always there for friends!Peace
Have loved Donovan Lietch since I was a tiny little girl. We had the pleasure of seeing Donovan at McGraw Hall in Seattle, Labor Day weekend, 2003, I was in a wheelchair (tore meniscus in both knees) and our youngest son sat in my lap. The clueless DJ announced him “And now all the way from Glasgow, England”, my husband and I still lol about that! He was simply fantastic, I like how he has Page playing Jeff Beck’s OG guitar 🎸 parts, this is a favorite song, I know all the words to every Donovan song, and I must say he still looked phenomenal when we saw him!! He gave out music store shakey eggs for percussion and I still have mine!!❤
I love Jimmy no matter what he does. I remember every part of this song. I knew he was a session musician but never knew that was him on this song. I can hear every bit of that guitar on this record in my head.
I was 14 when this was released in the states and I had a crush on a lifeguard named Norman. I remember hearing this and watching Norman while i was swimming around. I love this song. It reminds me of that summer. I play it a lot and remember those glory days and think of Norman.
2 of my all time fav's, so great to see Jimmy with a guitar again - fantastic performance. Let's hope with Page's visit to Japan coming up that the king of guitar has returned to his throne to play live more often and create new music
Page rules. Clapton is always 2nd maybe 3rd in my book. Yes Jimmy had some rough times but has come through and playing better than ever. Rock on Jimmy! Donovan is also a force to be reckoned with, Excellent post. Thanks!
He stopped drinking alcohol about 20 years ago, and he's always eaten a healthy diet. No meat. He says he's over the party, but I've seen him on the town having a grand old time. God Bless Jimmy Page!
I was only 11 or 12 when this was a hit song.... I always loved the intro to this song !! I love the words... Loved Donovan since!! I never did psychedelic drugs. (too young then anyway) But ya really didn't have to!! Life in general, (🎶🎶, fashion, art, posters..) everything was psychedelic anyway!!!
The backing band's lineup on Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow are unique, innovative, and superb. So superb in fact, that it is a shame it is so unique, and was not widely imitated. In that array you find acoustic guitar, double bass, subtle electric guitar (Telecaster?), harpsichord, congas, bongos, traps, flute, violins, and God knows what else--- all blending together to create a sound without parallel, never equalled, never duplicated. A sound combining folk, exotic, classical, and phantasmagorical elements that combine to approximate that subtle inner sound of The Music Of The Spheres that was elsewhere approximated only with arrival of the symphony orchestra. Donovan's early band approximated the sound with a spare and completely original line up. I kept waiting for others to imitate the lineup and sound,, but none ever did. Now I should wait for the release of the album of this night. Being as it was nine years ago, that is a treat that enthusiasts may never receive.
One of the surprises is to hear the flute player go to town on a live LP. The man's name was Harold McNair. You can hear him on "Preachin Love" , particularly the live version.
Really great observation I always wanted and expected more music with such a line-uo from that album. Glad to hear another with similar sentiment . Could have been a separate sub-class of music on its own...well sorta. Anyway always wanted more. But what is there is always listened to by me. A similar unique collection of instrumentals and their artists was on album of Van Morrison ASTRAL WEEKS. Both to me are timeless and the creative musicness never wear out.
After Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones died his widow Linda Lawrence and Donovan got to together, she brought her son Julien Brian Jones with her. Donovan raised the boy as his own. I like that about Donovan.
What an iconic song that was in its day. What a great time to be young. He stayed with the Maharishi with the Beatles at an ashram in India. He was in with the incrowd. Sometimes memories are best left as such and not dredgded up as is the case here. Hotrible
I saw Donovan perform this live in August 1977, opening for Yes at the Philadelphia Spectrum. This may have been the last great concert I saw, concerts started becoming "low-energy" in the late 70's. Donovan's set was great and this was the highlight of course. Yes was still amazingly great at this point in time too.
In. Some way Jimmy page seems to be more social with age. Less mysterious, more easy with public and speaking. I've never known him. Just trying to pinpoint a sense or feeling.
I still have a Polaroid taken with him 23 yrs ago..I recognized him just from his hair and back the look of terror on poor Jimmy's face when he turned around was priceless lol
5:08 when Jimmy drops his pick and goes after it ...... He didn't have a backup pick ? what if he couldn't find the dropped pick, what would've happened?
Lucky for Donovan, Plant's keeping Page from doing Zep shows, leaving him lots of time for other diversions like recreating Sunshine Superman onstage. Both Page & Donovan seem well preserved and young for their years here...Supermen, maybe?? Keep the kryptonite away.
Wow, what a start with focus on the green guitar -- green is the colour, BTW! Not just another good song, but formed from bringing the polar opposites together. Thus the colour of the heart chakra and supposed to cover the thin layer of Earth's surface. Breathe another good song :-)

A very great performance with two of the best performers Donovan and Jimmy Page. When this song came out in 1965 or 66 I was 10 or 11 years old. Who’s still listening? My mother loved his music. His songs motivated me to learn English and play guitar. His music is still making me happy instantly.
Donovan is awesome and so talented! This is an amazing song, another masterpiece!

Donovan's music just get better with age. It hasn't dropped off any since I was at a concert in Germany in 1972.
Jimmy is timeless, old and new. So far beyond.
I met him and got his autograph 25 ears ago in Chicago. Super humble
Ripped off the best!
Donovan: An innovative and amazing musician. Nobody else like him, and truly a treasure!

Jimmy "and" John Paul Jones recorded this song with Donovan. Whenever you hear the original on the radio they were the rhythm section.

After bieng in one of the most famous bands jimmy page is so humble he still plays backup for other musicians that's great
He was in a famous band called the Yardbirds before he ever formed Led Zeppelin
Musicians live to play, and play to live.
