Just finished watching all three of these sponsored videos and, as always, you did an excellent job!! Synology should get you to do all their videos but I know you have other things to do.
Still waiting to see the video you mentioned you would be doing on adding security cameras to your home/office and letting your data Synology do double duty, (with their surveillance app), to also act as an NVR/DVR for home/small office surveillance video.

Hi Lon !!! excellent video. Short, sweet and to the point. I was able to resolve a backup issue in a matter of minutes with your video, compared to days of reading posts on Synology forums and Synology recipes which are disastrous.
Keep up the good work. Ed.

Nice work on this Video ! It helped me see clearly how to seed the backup locally and then move offsite. Thank You for that! One note about restoring. Using the Desktop version of HyperBackup Explorer (on Windows) we can copy any Folder from root on down. Backup Explorer Web based does not permit this. Hope someone might find this tidbit of use.

    Lon,
Great video on a hot topic. Would like to see more on setting this up with Open VPN AND using backing up with a non synology server using rsync. I also have older Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ (2009). Although this old NAS is no longer supported it still works great. It supports Rsync and I'm using this to backup my old Netgear NAS to the new Synology DS415 play.
Note. through the Netgear NAS interface you can use rsync to both push and/or pull rsync with a remote rsync server/NAS. With the Synology NAS interface you "CANNOT" rsync pull. you need to get under the covers with ssh and write an ssh/rsync script and to pull date from a remote rsync server or NAS. Bad Bad BAD!
I do like the Synology backup versioning. Too bad you need to use the proprietary Synoogy interface to see the backups on the remote NAS. I wonder if this is true when backing up to a non-synology NAS. Another question: after you backup all the incremental versions setup, will the Synology merge or rollup the older incrementals into the original?
    Keep up the good work.

Hi Lon, i think you have missed a very cool feature here! In stead of hauling the destination NAS next to the source you want to hyper backup, there is a build in system which allows you to (temporarily) use an external harddrive for the initial backup, then reset the connection via internet and use the net for incremental backups. Add a new Nas s, backup, then tick the lowest of the 3 option (local share/USB) and make the first backup. Then drive down the to the offsite nas and copy the files from the USB DISK. When back (or via internet) pickup the backup you made and edit it to the new location (IP) and folder. This will save you some hustle with ip ranges which might differ from home network to homenetwork... Great video though!

I just got a Diskstation DS216 II+2 and was lost on which backup application to use. There seems to be some overlap between their options, though. For cloud backups to Google, I had thought "Cloud Sync" was the way to go, but now it looks like Hyper Backup to Google might be a better setup on an detrimental schedule. What do you think?

Great video! I have a dozen or so Synology NAS' out there at various client sites. I have had problems lately with 6.0 and USB external drives. I format them. Then I configure Hyper Backup to "Local Shared Folder and External Storage" but can't seem to be able to swap the drives out like I was used to. I can only backup to one drive. I get errors. Is there some trick I'm missing with the new Hyper Backup to be able to use 2 external drives in rotation?

I brought my main NAS to my backup NAS location with 10.0.0.x net. Did just like in the video and it worked perfectly until i came home. @ home i run 192.168.0.x and when i wanted to set up backup location ip adress Hyper backup wouldent let me enter the settings. I had to change my NAS to 10.0.0.x and my pc to 10.0.0.x to enter settings. Now the NAS has no internet connection and refuses to change the settings until it has confirmed connection with backup NAS. 1. bring NAS back to backup location or 2. change home net to 10.0.0.x for internet access.
Yes i can change and fix this, tought maby you wanted to know if you got some kind of deal with Synology for "bug" testing.

Hello Lon. Great videos and excellent explanations. I am considering adding a Synology DS415+ to my setup but I have one some problem that I haven't found an answer to. Must of my media is in iTunes on two different machines. Also all my photos are spread across these same two machines. I would really like to consolidate all these into one location and have each of the client machines access them (i.e. itunes or photos on each individual client machine would have access to all the media files and photos). Is this possible or is there a work around?
    Thanks

Hi Lon, great video and hyper backup seems to be really great. However, I have a problem with regards to ip address. I won't be able to set a static ip or dyndns mainly bec my isp uses shared ip(i think its called CGNat, i might be wrong) but basically the isp assigns one ip address for the whole area. So customers is sharing that ip in the area. Encountered this issue 2years ago when i was using dyndns for cctv cameras. Doesn't work now since my isp changed to this technology. Any other way I can do remote backups?

+Kevin Bragdon I usually prefer to login to the router and do it manually, but Synology allows you to forwards ports through their DSM software. CONTROL PANEL > EXTERNAL ACCESS > ROUTER CONFIGURATION > SET UP ROUTER > (once the routers set up) > CREATE > Built-in applications or Custom Port. You will only use custom port if you installed 3rd party applications.

    • @KevinBragdon
      @KevinBragdon 8 лет назад +1

+Nicholas Nunez I guess one would have to use Custom Port protocol, if installing software that changes your IP address to hinder tracking.

Thank you for the video and tips on Hyper Backup, but it doesn't seem to have enough options or granularity for my clients. Im assuming it doesn't byte verify the copy nor partition the data into named folders (I use Weekdays, Weeks and Month), nor stop or restart processes, like SQL, for database backups?
I'm a huge fan of SyncBack Pro which lets me slice/dice, encrypt/decrypt, verify, email, stop/start, backup only changes, etc... into/out of clients Synology/Qnap NAS devices. SyncBack does not operate as a device app.
I've seen Hyper Backup in my device apps, but previously just ignored it.

I have 2 Synology disk stations, both in the same network (actually sitting side by side). They have both the same number of drive bays and drives (in fact, all drives are of the same size and from the same OEM). One disk station is a few year older than the other. My problem is I have updated the DSM of the older disk station to the latest DSM, 6.1.4 (from 6.0.1). I also installed the latest Hyper Backup for this disk station as the original factory installed Hyper Backup is incompatible with DSM 6.1.4.
The trouble is, the newer NAS is unable to update the DSM beyond 6.1.2. The Hyper Backup in this newer NAS is quite old, factory release version from 2015. So my question is: Can I follow your backup process to backup the data from the older NAS (which has the latest DSM and Hyper Backup) to the other NAS (which DSM is stuck at 6.1.2 and with even older Hyper Backup)?
My thinking is since all my data and folder hierarchy is in the older NAS, and I am using the (latest) Hyper backup on that NAS to backup the data to the newer NAS (but with older hyper backup), it should not be matter because the key is the hyper backup in the NAS where the data (which I want to backup) is located. The destination backup NAS is just the recipient of the backup and so even though it has the older DSM and older Hyper backup, it doesn't matter. Is my thinking correct?
    Thanks in advance.

Hello, I have a question. So, my setup is 2 DS1815+, on two different sites
There is a VPN connection between the 2 sites
My question is about the backup destination :
what is the best choice between the Remote Synology NAS and the Remote RSync Server, which means the Rsync service activated on the destination NAS.
I have been using the RSYNC way for backuping shared folder to the other NAS, but maybe Remote Synology NAS is better ?
Whats the difference between the 2 solutions ?
    Thanks !

Great Video. I think synology should sponsor you do do a video on a more complete topic...certificates. Where and how to get them , how to install them The complete process to make the nas secure with https. . Lots of owners that buy these don't know how to do this properly. Shouldn't security of the nas actually be a major topic that synology would want everyone to have a clear understanding on.

Synology has made adding a cert very easy now, They have added 'Lets Encrypt' as an option. Answer a few simply questions and the cert is downloaded to you NAS and its free. You just have to make sure port 80 is open to your NAS at the time of signup then after signup you can disable port 80. The only downside is you have to renew it every 3 months and its not automatic. Hope Synology changes this so it will automatically renew.
I do agree with you though, It would be great if Lon would make a video showing people how to create a cert and install it.

+itGEEKS Ray Thanks Ray...But does that get rid of the red x you see when you go to it in a browser. Basically saying it's unsafe. Is what your talking about new in 6.0. I know in old version my browser would show it could not be verified as a safe site and I think that was because it was a machine cert.

How would you backup to an old NAS that is NOT a Synology? Many have upgraded and would like to re-use their old devices.

HI ! I'm trying to backup a Synology NAS client
to another NAS as server. I try to connect using the HyperBackup wizard, the wizard shows the server's name and adress normally and let me enter user name and password but when and I click the Shared Folder dropdown, I get all the shared folders of the client NAS, and not as in your video the shared folders of the server.Have an idea of what is going wrong ? Thank you for your help.

Is it possible to backup my computer directly to an offsite Synology server? (without needing a second one)
I want to have an offsite backup, but my current local backup is a home server running windows 10 which does a lot more than a synology can - It wouldn't make sense to have a home server and synology in my home AND another synology offsite.

Yes, cloud sync can backup files to a remote synology device. Only 1 Synology device is needed.

Hi Lon, I'm trying to setup a Synology Nas for remote offsite backup. Have 2 Synology ready to go. Should I use Synology Quick connect, VPN, or other service based on security, ease of setup, and performance? I appreciate your feedback.

Great video. I am using 2 factor authentication via google authenticator to access my remote synology NAS. Will Hyperbackup be able to access the remote NAS if two factor authentication is enabled? Thank you

Thanks for the video. I setup my clients DS1515+ as HB Source and DS1313+ as HV Target. Performed a 3-folder, baseline 1.3Tb backup in-house (local network) w/o errors. Ran incremental backups in the office for one week to test/verify daily incremental backups were working - no errors. Moved the target NAS to clients home network with Charter Communications 10Mb service. Clients office Internet service is certified 10Mb. Of the three folders to be backed up, the smallest runs without errors. The other two folders are large, but the incrementals would be less than 10-20Mb each depending on accounting client and tax activity. The incremental's on the two large folders repeatedly timeout and subsequently fail. I'm using Synology's DDNS service and I'm wondering if I should switch to DYDDNS to see if the timeout/failure issues resolved themselves, UNLESS you have some "grand wizard" advice to resolve this issue.

It’s possible you’ve got some upnp issues going on.. have you thought about setting up a VPN?

    • @nealevans2467

      Thank you for prompt response.
I'll have to assess my clients home router features - VPN, I don't know. The Sonicwall in office is already config'd to allow outbound traffic to the home (target) NAS. I have created a DYNDNS trial acct and will reconfig the clients end (port forwarding) tomorrow. We' ll see if that resolves the disconnect issue during longer Hyper Backup sessions. Otherwise, I'll pursue the VPN solution.

Just setup hyper backup to an Amazon drive. How can I access and view the backed up data on the Amazon drive? Is there a better solution than hyper backup in this situation?

    • @LonSeidman
      @LonSeidman  7 лет назад

You can use the "backup explorer" through the Hyperbackup tool as I demonstrated in the video. But the files will not be accessible outside of it. An alternative is their Cloud Sync utility that will keep Amazon Drive synced up with your NAS.

Can you do an openVPN tutorial? Is openVPN the commerical VPN that you purchase (openvpn.net) or is it a free thing that you can setup yourself. Thank you.

That would be awesome. I just bought a new drive to do the backup and in the midst of backing up my current set before moving it over. Would be great to have this tutorial so I can set up the remote side. Looking forward. Hope this is sooner, rather than later!!! And can this be done on any computer, not just Raspberry Pi. For instance, I use Mac.

I want to know how to encrypt and schedule incremental backup (not sync) from Synology Diskstation DS218 data to google drive.
Objective is if I lost my NAS data to fire or some natural disaster or ransomware, I will buy new Synology Diskstation and retrieve my data from google drive.
I want encryption before back up to make sure those who has access to this google drive account (or even google) cannot access backed up data.
I want encrypted backup, NOT SYNC.
If I sync, google and other users of this account can read my data. I don't want it.

Hey Lon. I'm using Synology devices for years now and they work very well. But for now I will stay away from DSM 6 because of the new Hyper Backup.
In older DSM versions files are backed up as a 1:1 copy. The new format is definitely a big issue. A backup has to be _extremely reliable_. But their new format is not well tested (at least some years to call it reliable) and not public documented.
So there is no way I could trust Hyper Backup at all. Maybe Hyper Backup can be trusted with DSM 7 or later. But right now I rather wait an see others run into datalosses and issues.

Lon, thanks for a great tutorial once again! I would also love having one on opening ports on a router... I'm not super versed into this and struggle for days each time I change home, provider or router...! I have a provider, the modem/router box from the provider, a personal router and my Synology NAS. I couldn't get it to work and uses quickconnect to access it from outside so far as I can't get the sinology.me:5000 address to work out... Thanks!

The only thing with cloud services for backup with consumers is it's speed and cost. Tried several and most turned up interrupted for unknown reason. Unreliable. Am waiting for hard drive prices to drop for an external drive. But then why do I have a NAS for?? Never ending loop!!!

THANK YOU FOR BEING SMART --- THANK YOU FOR BEING SMART --- THANK YOU FOR BEING SMART
Sorry, got a little carried away but I came up with this solution to host my business' backups, and googled the idea for validation. IT IS AWFUL to try to explain to someone, with no conception of IT, this idea. You know, When the close their eyes, shake their heads, and say "Insert any generic PUTERS remark".
It is nice to even be in video and comment company of those who understand...
