I'm moving my studio space into the garage this summer and will be doing the same thing on a smaller scale luckily. Have to have the walls filled and also replace the 15amp outlets with 30amp and all the romex in between. At least the panel is in the same room.
Vinyl 1/2" x 1/2" L-Angle... This guy does not know what he is talking about "beauty strip". Can pick it up at Home Depot, Lowes, most hardware stores. "Pro tip" cut to fit. The insulation kits generally come with them (keyword "generally").
Does the sun shine on your garage door? I am in Phoenix, and find that sun shining on the door raises the temperature of the door 40 degrees above ambient, even in the winter. I have not measured it in the summer, but my garage gets terribly hot in the summer. When I used a thermal camera on the house at midnight, I found the garage doors to be a huge heat loss, much more than my single pane windows.
My House is north-north westfacing. In the winter my garage doors get zero sun. The summer is different. My rv bay gets a few hours in the afternoon of sun, but blocks the small garage to some degree. The panels get extremely hot. The insulation panels helped a lot. I measured the exterior in the afternoon sun and it was in the 140* range on the outside. Inside was closer to 105*.
@@DrivingForwardBuilds What I wanted to know was not the garage door heat difference but the overall garage temperature. Do you recall how much the entire garage temperature went down by?
That’s a little tougher to quantify. I installed my wall insulation shortly after doing the doors. During the brief time before insulating the walls I’d say it was around a 10* difference.
Professional here... Adding more tension to the spring reduces the life of the spring. Springs are rated for weight/height of the door at a minimum for 10,000 open/close cycles. Absolutely correct adding insulation to the door adds weight, for which springs needed to be exchanged. Also, IF your springs lost tension after an install, it was not done properly. NOT TO SAY IT DOES/CANNOT HAPPEN. Always contact a professional. This gentleman gave us the biggest hint as to why this was not done correctly. The person doing the work is a FRIEND! Make sure your friend does the work properly. PLEASE CALL A TRUE PROFESSIONAL.
Thanks for commenting. Though to correct you my friend is a professional. The springs were replaced prior to the video for the weight that it would be, and my RV springs were already oversized. The spring adjustment was to rebalance for the weight. Appreciate you watching out.
@DrivingForwardBuilds that is not what was said in the video... Your friend may be a professional, yet he did the "hack" type of work. Take the honest criticism, and watch for misleading others. Thank you.
@@charlesdeffendoll3817I’m perfectly comfortable with criticism. If the springs were sized for the weight prior to the installation wouldn’t it make sense to have them under wound?
@DrivingForwardBuilds In the beginning of the video he stated, "Springs lose tension." Why are you back tracking? I stated sometimes springs lose tension, which if done properly should not happen. Nothing was stated you had new springs installed prior... Which you stated... I feel it's still misleading information. IF the springs were changed, why not explain that in the video, show the process? Obviously you were caught being deceptive, and now lying about it. Make sure to use professionals. Not just a "professional" friend.
@@DrivingForwardBuilds Also, having a spring "under wound" would cause further issues, as jumped cables, heavy door, strain on the operator, amongst other issues. Are you quizzing me?
The advice from the garage door professional is priceless. I would never have thought of the balancing issue or the added strain to the motor
Glad you got something out of it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

That’s nice to have close access to the panel. Why the 30 amp outlets though?
What are the strips called that hold the panels?
I believe they are just trim strips or retainer strips. I haven’t found them outside of the garage door installers though.
1/2" x1/2" Vinyl L-Angle, can get 8-10' strips, and cut to fit.
Where can I find the strips to hold the panels in place?
I’ve only been able to find them through a garage door supplier or installer.
Could cut flat plastic strips
Double sided tape if the bend out on you.
Terrific video
Thank You! 🙂
So what are the strips called? The pro tip?
They are "beauty strips" or just "filler strips".
@@DrivingForwardBuilds Can't find it at Homedepot.

Which brand panels did you use? Will be doing it in So. Az. 105 in the summer.
I used the Cellofoam panels from HomeDepot.
😮Great tips! Important to be safe. Are you going to insulate by the windows?
I'm not planing on it currently. I did use the remaining scrap pieces to wrap the current windows though.

Is this available in canada?
It should be.
Does the door technician work overseas?🤣
i'm sure for the right vacation he could be persuaded.
$5000 trip charge.
If you install couple of garage Vents fan it helps to extract some of the hot air out of your garage.
@@yvettel.5981 just don’t vent it to the attic lol
Wow, my garage door has been just fine and it’s 22 years old. Wow I’m good brother. Sounds like a bunch of malarkey.
Either you don't live in Satan's armpit like I do, or you don't work in your garage. This made a tremendous difference for me with my doors.
