There's a fantastic spiritual successor to these Fallout games called Underrail..its the craziest turn based RPG I've ever played and highly recommend. Takes everything great about the mechanics and extends it.
I played probably 4 hours of Fallout 1. I enjoyed it to a degree. It's a difficult game to just jump into and a guide would be soooo helpful. I probably should go back and play it again. Thanks Matty.
Not only do you need to jump back into it but you also gotta try Fallout 2 once you've dealt with Fallout (should be around 50 hrs). The second opus was a huge step forward, making the original one look like a demo. There has been no RPG since those (aside Planescape Torment, Arcanum, and a bunch of CRPGs) that allows the player to go pretty much in every direction, as far as the character build is concerned.
@@TheSoleDweller So I've heard. My original plan a couple of years ago (well after the release of Fallout 4 and a year or two after 76), was to play through the games in order of release and then play Fallout 3. I wanted to know what the hype was all about going into the FPS versions we know now. Well, as stated, it didn't go quite the way I had thought because of the complexity I wasn't expecting going in. I've since have played 3 and 4. Love 4 and 3 was super enjoyable. I need to sit down and play Vegas but I'd like to play it on the Fallout 4 engine as those DLC size mods are still in the works. As for 76, eh, I'm burnt out on MMO's so I think I'll pass. One of my goals this year is to finish Fallout 1 and maybe 2 this year. Any tips for Fallout 1 and 2 would be welcome.
@@donnycanup1327 In both 1 & 2, there are places, enemies and quests that you just cannot beat early game. But you might often realize that after you've tried a couple times. So the main tip is : save game pretty often, especially before engaging conversation with a NPC that has a name (this one is mandatory as you might wanna try different dialogue trees and/or try speech checks again - the game rolls a dice, taking into account the character stats involved) and also before fights to begin.
@@donnycanup1327 the real fun begins when you do Ironman runs, so 1 death equals resetting the game. The beauty of FO1 is, that you can beat the game with all quests in like 3-4 hours, so those Runs are not as painful as doing a hardcore run of Fallout New Vegas which can take 20 hours. The adrenaline rush is crazy.
the optimal way to play fallout 1 is by playing with the mod fallout 1 in 2. it does what its name suggests it puts fallout 1 into the much better fallout 2 engine which makes the game far better because it has all the fixes and upgrades from 2.
Something everyone should try is send the manual pdf file to a online printing service. Get it on nice paper, glossy covers with a nice spiral binding. Really is money well spent. Such great lore, really takes you back
If you had put 1 more point into Agility, you would have had the ability to pop off two pistol rounds per turn. Your action points are equal to half of your Agility rounded down. Hence, you don't really want to put your Agility at an odd value.
I can tell there are a lot of people used to pen-and-paper systems in this comments section. It's something I wish would come back in newer games, more often, and I can tell it would be a huge learning curve for most modern RPG players.

If u like them I would recommend to try the wasteland series as well, the predecessor to fallout and I believe there has been remakes of the original one also…
For those not old enough to remember: reading was half the appeal of RPGs back in the day. It really changed heavily in the mid 2000s… I’d say RPGs today are about 30% role playing (at best)
Kids over the years became dumber, and their attentions shortened. Which is why RPGs got dumbed down over the years. To a point where RPGs done even exist really. Only a few gems come out. Luckily it seems we are going back towards hardcore rpg more now a days.
@@Sothpawman its really good, demon's souls, resident evil 2 and shadow of the colossus are great too but i guess those are remakes rather than remasters
For people that enjoy the original Fallout games, I'd recommend going back and playing Planescape Torment as well. A lot of DNA shared between Fallout and that game given the people that worked on both of them.
I graduated in 2000 but believe it or not I never played a single Fallout game until Fallout 4. I hope one day they release these on console. I’d love to play them.

My opinion after joining the series at Fallout 3. Fallout games were meant to be dark and hardcore. Each year Fallout seems to move away from those elements due to creating a game for [E] everyone. This is the reason 76 sucks and a Fallout 1 and 2 remake is appealing. Yes FO4 looked good but the game was safe. Fallout needs to return to the dark side to get our attention again. I wanna see Fallout 1 & 2 produced like Disco Elysium.
I just beat fo1 and fo2 like 2 week ago,and currently on new run,i really like fo2 setting it i can see where new Vegas comes from, and for y guys that wanna play Fallout worry about the time given u can extend that by buying water at the merchant town u can go there rightaway
Hola, Matty. A partir de ahora voy a comentar en español en tus videos y espero estés listo. Sugiero que hagas algún contenido de Fallout 2 también, ya que podrías ilustrar mucho mejor esos cambios que comentas que hubo del 1 al 2.
I feel like fallout 3 and NV would be welcomed but the original games need more love to have a more updated feel similar to that of wasteland 2 and 3 to be faster paced and lively
Have you played ATOM RPG at all? I think it's a pretty good game that harkens back to the classic Fallout but with some modern day music, visuals, graphics, etc. If you haven't, I think you'd like it!
Going from FPS fallout to classic Fallout takes a little bit. The opening hours are brutal so you've really gotta build up your power ASAP, save every penny, and find Ian in Shady Sands. I highly recommend And don't be afraid to read the web for help 👍
Fallout 1 and 2 can be tough to get into with the late 90s clunky interface and muddy graphics, but I'm telling you, once you get past those weaknesses, you'll experience some of the best RPG greatness you'll ever encounter. Fallout 1 to this day still is my favorite of the series (still love ya New Vegas), dark, moody, with great storytelling. Playing a high speech sniper (look for builds online) is a blast with so many ways to finish quests and encounters. It blew my mind that you could talk the very difficult end game boss into killing himself if you pass enough speech checks the first time I played it back in the day. They just don't make games like this anymore, I recommend searching for the "Nearly Ultimate Fallout Guide" online, It's a great guide to help new players get started. *EDIT* - new players, run east towards Vault 15 (its on your map), don't run southwest! You're running towards areas that are way higher than your level.....as Matt found out haha.
Because you don't have the radio in Fallout 1 its got the creepiest atmosphere out of all of them, at least in New Vegas/Fallout 3 the DJ's Three Dog and Mr. New Vegas keep you company in the wasteland. Recruit Dogmeat in Junktown and Ian in Shady Sands, makes early game a little bit easier 😆
Both games hold up pretty well if you're used to CRPGs. As for modern "old" Fallout. I would say VATS does an outstanding job of bringing the old turn based combat to a 1st/3rd person 3D game. The problem is that the rest of the game is running in real time. I guess a mix between the AP system of Valkyria Chronicles and VATS would be the perfect modernized FO game.
Brotherhood of Steel is "THAT" Fallout game. It's the one everyone hated 'til F76 came out. I started the series with Fallout 3 & New Vegas, and I also think F4&76 are subpar "Fallout" experiences.
Does Bethesda own Fallout 1 and 2? I remember there was a whole lawsuit over distribution rights or something like that over this game. They have the IP but I wonder if they can be able to remaster the OG Fallouts.
They barely acknowledge New Vegas exists, and it took a Microsoft takeover for talks about a New Vegas sequel to start happening. Bethesda Game Stidios fumbled the Fallout Franchise ever since they bought it, the only good Fallout game coming from a different studio
Matt, necropolis only have super mutants after some has passes OR you just nose around and go back, after a few days, its swarming with super mutants. Before that ita just feral ghouls amd ghouls
Seeing you play F1&2 are hilarious. You have multiple videos saying how you just "can't get into them" but now pretending to be all super enthusiastic about it.. The game has a steep learning curve.. if you can pass that, and learn the interface, the game becomes legendary. YOU however said you couldnt play the first 2 games based on the turn based and slow gameplay.. which that is NOT a learning curve. You either like turn based or you dont. So the irony from your Classic FO videos is top notch 😂😂
Played every Fallout Game ever made. Not even an old man. Fallout 1 and 3 are my favorites. 1 because it's the most realistic, difficult, and the time limit can REALLY creep up on you. and 3 because it has the best atmosphere, economy, side quests, and easily the most morally ambiguous of all the Fallouts.
@@TheSoleDweller Agreed. I think NV is over rated though. Don't get me wrong, 10/10 game. But I've noticed a LOT of the NV fanbase tends to hate on everything Bathesda did. Basically 1,2,Tactics, and NV are the best of the best and 3 and 4 are utterly dog trash that did absolutely nothing good or if they did NV did it better. Honest kind of a shame. It's a divide that's really only come about in the last 3 years but it's already gotten so big.
@@spiffygonzales5160 I agree for the main part. As a diehard fan of Fallout (i was in my late teens when Interplay delivered those gems), I do like Fallout 3 and 4, for various reasons. For instance, I love the fact I can build settlements in the 4th opus. The 3rd was a blast as a long-awaited Fallout game (was like ten years with no proper one) and Bethesda succeeded in making it a 3D game with all the bestiary created with true respect to the old lore AND they did great creating the VATS system, which was the closest you could get to the turn-based combat system from the original and the 2nd.
I beat f1 twice, but beat f2 multiple times. I love fallout 2. I tried but never beat fallout tactics. F1 was proof of concept but f2 was the best version of the ancient fallouts due to them improving on the concept. Tbh I can't see them re-releasing these on consoles. Not without radically altering the game due to K&M usage to play. Making it compatible with a controller and doing it well is gonna be insanely tough. K&M is supported on xbox but Microsoft isn't one to just re-release a game on console with it only able to be played on K&M. I can see them remastering them or even remaking them, accesibility is their thing as a company, but getting past the controls will be a big issue with bring them to console. Big reason I didn't like F1 was because of much it felt like it was pushing me to finish the game as fast as possible. Big plus to f2 for me that they dont give you that time limit. I usually mod fallout 1 to give me the ability to add more time whenever I want so I can really explore every nook and cranny. Fallout was at its ancient peak with Fallout 2. The dark humor was peak, story was fantastic, things were vastly improved ect. I'll never forget being able to become a porn star in f2. The picture for the perk was hilarious 😂. Look it up when you can. Also look up the baby killer perk picture. This was a legit perk and it highlights its insanely dark humor lol. Edit: An idea that would help make the ancient fallouts more playable on console is if they were remastered with Wasteland 2s kind of controls. That would really make F1 and F2 compatible with controller. InXile is owned by Microsoft and bethesda is owned by them as well. I think it would be a perfect match for inxile to work on a F1 and F2 remaster including W2 controls. Just an extra thought of mine.

I love OG Fallout and like 3D Fallout but tbh knowing where Shady Sands is (and not to go the other way) and to run away from encounters you can't win is basic stuff you learn straight away so kinda surprised you played it that way. having said that, the game does not help you at all and I guess it's easy to forget if you only got to FO1,2 & tactics after FO3 & FO4.
Might want to consider re-uploading this video with the game's audio less quiet. I can barely hear the music and sfx at max volume
When he said to listen to the music, there was nothing
There's a fantastic spiritual successor to these Fallout games called Underrail..its the craziest turn based RPG I've ever played and highly recommend. Takes everything great about the mechanics and extends it.
Atom RPG is another one. But you are right, Underrail is awesome.
Matty, you should do a video comparing the worlds of wasteland and fallout and seeing which is the more preferable wasteland to survive in
I played probably 4 hours of Fallout 1.
@@TheSoleDweller Thanks. Not too different from Fallout 3 and 4 then. At least how I play with saving often.
Man I just realized I've been following you for almost 10 years now...

Fallouts 1 & 2 are the real ones. 3 & 4 are just Oblivion and Skyrim with guns
"3 & 4 are just Oblivion and Skyrim with guns"
They're even worse than that.
Even worse given 3, 4, and Skyrim had Emil Pagliarulo as lead writer.
@@TheBreakingBenny Exactly. That guy cannot write. His writing is some of the worst in the games industry and it has sorely undermined BGS' games.
I remember going to see Flubber in theaters back then. Fun times. im pretty sure Mouse Hunt came out that year too. Great childhood theater memories.
La Confidential was on 1997. One of my fav movies
OG Dead Rising is an amazing game. The timing mechanism really makes the game. You should cover it
17:00 TRUE, I got all the way to the end of FO2 and screwed myself by running past some guards into a corner and saving, only to find I didn't have enough health to get back out. Still haven't completed that game...
Lesson learned, do multiple saves.
I actually just bought both Fallout and Fallout 2 on sale for dirt cheap. I've always wanted to at least try them, I've been getting more into isometric cRPGs like Baldur's Gate, and Divinity., so these will be atleast fun to try

If u like them I would recommend to try the wasteland series as well, the predecessor to fallout and I believe there has been remakes of the original one also…
I love the tone of Fallout 1. It's less funny than the other titles, and there's a certain tinge of despair/cynicism I wish Fallout would revisit.
Tip for playing F1/2, enable Integer scaling in the GPU driver and play at something like 720P.
For those not old enough to remember: reading was half the appeal of RPGs back in the day. It really changed heavily in the mid 2000s… I’d say RPGs today are about 30% role playing (at best)
Morrowind is the most reading I've done in an RPG
Kids over the years became dumber, and their attentions shortened. Which is why RPGs got dumbed down over the years. To a point where RPGs done even exist really. Only a few gems come out. Luckily it seems we are going back towards hardcore rpg more now a days.
Imagine if they remastered Fallout 1 and 2 to the same quality that blizzard did for Diablo 2 not too long ago
That diablo 2 remaster was the best looking remaster ive ever seen
@@Sothpawman
its really good, demon's souls, resident evil 2 and shadow of the colossus are great too but i guess those are remakes rather than remasters
For people that enjoy the original Fallout games, I'd recommend going back and playing Planescape Torment as well. A lot of DNA shared between Fallout and that game given the people that worked on both of them.
Matty it you like the oh Fallout I recommend Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick and Obscura. A lot of the same people also worked on that.
I think a FPS Fallout could work. Metro style open world and style, FarCry shooting and traversal, with Deus Ex rpg and story mechanics.
We have plenty of those 1st person shooter games already and way too many
Lol, make it Fallout: FPS.
You get to play as an Enclave during their war with the BoS or as BoS during their war with NCR.
I graduated in 2000 but believe it or not I never played a single Fallout game until Fallout 4. I hope one day they release these on console. I’d love to play them.
Don’t you have a computer around?
Fallout 1 and 2 will run on pretty much any PC or laptop with a video card these days. Like seriously junky PCs and laptops will still run it.
A wooden PC should suffice.
@@megamanx1291 I don’t actually. I’m like a caveman. I peddle a bicycle to get power to my Xbox. I do have a laptop though, never thought about using it . Didn’t think it would work lol
You could have used the DOCTOR skill to cure the poison
My opinion after joining the series at Fallout 3. Fallout games were meant to be dark and hardcore. Each year Fallout seems to move away from those elements due to creating a game for [E] everyone. This is the reason 76 sucks and a Fallout 1 and 2 remake is appealing. Yes FO4 looked good but the game was safe. Fallout needs to return to the dark side to get our attention again. I wanna see Fallout 1 & 2 produced like Disco Elysium.
i need more matty gameplays
I started out with Wasteland on my C64. I loved playing these older games. I might have to dust them off again.
Fallout 1 is just a game I can never manage to slog through. I always try and get 1 hour in and quit.
I just beat fo1 and fo2 like 2 week ago,and currently on new run,i really like fo2 setting it i can see where new Vegas comes from, and for y guys that wanna play Fallout worry about the time given u can extend that by buying water at the merchant town u can go there rightaway
The title made me think brotherhood of steel on ps2.
For anyone looking to replay the originals, do yourself a favor and get Fallout Fixt for FO1 and Killap's Restoration Project for FO2. Thank me later.
Hola, Matty. A partir de ahora voy a comentar en español en tus videos y espero estés listo.
Sugiero que hagas algún contenido de Fallout 2 también, ya que podrías ilustrar mucho mejor esos cambios que comentas que hubo del 1 al 2.
If a remaster/remake is ever made:
1) Add music to the open world
2) Remake cutscenes
3) Bring back cut content or new content
I feel like fallout 3 and NV would be welcomed but the original games need more love to have a more updated feel similar to that of wasteland 2 and 3 to be faster paced and lively
I wish Larian owned the franchise licence, rather than Bethesda...
Matty are you gonna do Baldur's Gate I&II next?
Have you played ATOM RPG at all? I think it's a pretty good game that harkens back to the classic Fallout but with some modern day music, visuals, graphics, etc. If you haven't, I think you'd like it!
he's literally in the game as an NPC
Going from FPS fallout to classic Fallout takes a little bit. The opening hours are brutal so you've really gotta build up your power ASAP, save every penny, and find Ian in Shady Sands. I highly recommend And don't be afraid to read the web for help 👍
Whilst Lone was quietly playing his way through F4 prior to release Marty was out ‘ere playing F1. The og
In the beginning, you feet are your best friend. You have to run from many things.
Morrowind is the perfect in-between of old school rpgs and modern rpgs
wanted to see a longer cut of you goin thru this and fallout 2
Yo, Matty....any speculation on when starfield would release if not delayed again?
This is the Fallout Channel now
Pretty sure it's BEEN the fallout channel.
Well.. aside from Oxhorn of course
I've never played the Fallout 1 or 2. Like a lot of people my first Fallout was 3. I would definitely give them a try if they were added to Game Pass.
So i tried making one of these , "so i tried" formatted videos again.
I'd love to see you do a similar video on Fallout 2, Matty!
I’m as old as the entire Fallout franchise lol
Brotherhood of Steel is "THAT" Fallout game. It's the one everyone hated 'til F76 came out.
I started the series with Fallout 3 & New Vegas, and I also think F4&76 are subpar "Fallout" experiences.
MATTY! USE YOUR HEALING SKILL!
Would you be able to do the early elder scrolls?
Read the Title and thought it was gonna be Brotherhood of Steel.
You miss one game to mention it was on PS2 I think which was fall out Brotherhood of Steel
I loved one what an incredible experience, two on the other hand…..
0:43 You forgot to mention that some of the original Fallout devs are part of iNXile, now. Hence the great Wasteland 2 and 3 that they delivered.

Can’t you steal from the companions to get past the trade mechanics?
I’ve been trying and have been loving it
Seeing you play F1&2 are hilarious.
Dunno why Microsoft hasn't done quick and dirty ports of the first 3 Fallout games for Xbox.
Cool you're playing games that are only slightly newer than your bob cut!
People talk about hardcore srpgs with perma death and such... this is pretty much that, lol.
Would be shocking if they ported these games to modern plateforms with controller support.
What a coincidence. I just started playing fallout 1

Can you play 2 as well or tactics or elder scrolls
Played every Fallout Game ever made. Not even an old man. Fallout 1 and 3 are my favorites.
1 because it's the most realistic, difficult, and the time limit can REALLY creep up on you.
and
3 because it has the best atmosphere, economy, side quests, and easily the most morally ambiguous of all the Fallouts.
Fallout 2 and NV are way up there !
@@TheSoleDweller
Agreed.
The 3rd was a blast as a long-awaited Fallout game (was like ten years with no proper one) and Bethesda succeeded in making it a 3D game with all the bestiary created with true respect to the old lore AND they did great creating the VATS system, which was the closest you could get to the turn-based combat system from the original and the 2nd.
my main gripe with fallout 1 is that time limit, i just want to explore and enjoy the game but i cant that's why i love fallout 2 way more.
Yeah, time limits just stress me out, it's not fun
they removed the super mutant time limit so you can explore
Just explore after you beat the game.
Dam i wanna to watch you play more
"It's a shorter game, takes about, I'd say, 10 to 12 hours."
Yeah maybe if you're speedrunning 😂 Game is more like 20-25 hours
Good video
you should do a video on wasteland 2 and 3
i thought he was talking about brotherhood of steel 💀
yea the wording really made it seem like it was BOS
we don't talk about Brotherhood of Steel
It's not "That" fallout game. It's The Fallout game.
There’s countless old console games you could go back to and have a ton of fun but with pc games it always seems like they age like milk
every time i tried to play this game i never even made it outside of the cave lol.
Good video Matty!
I’ve played Fallout 2 only. Pretty good game. You can tell all the crap things they did where in the first game were repaired.
Obviously I played every Fallout game after 2
