Ah fallout 3 the only game I ever bought because the cover looked cool. Knew nothing about it went to game stop that night after getting off work to buy fable 2. Bought the game played through the opening vault got outside and was like “ what have I gotten into… Thought my BB gun could defeat a rad scorpion😂. Got chased around finally saw a school and thought school= safe. Nope walked into heard the raider background talk and was like nope . Turned the game off didn’t pick it up for a week. .. gave it another try and been a fallout fanatic ever since. Eventually got fable 2 and yeah I made the better pick….

    My "Fallout 3" story:
I played OG Fallout when it came out. I played FO2 when it came out. I played Tactics when it came out. I remember being so, so excited when 3 was announced, and then so, so unsure that it'd be an FPS RPG. I was also concerned it was going to be with Bethesda and without Fargo and Interplay/Black Isle. I didn't get 3 at release because I didn't have a system of that gen that could play it. I saved up some "frivolous" money over the course of a year and finally bought a PS3, and then a local Movie Gallery was closing and selling everything at a discount. I got the GOTY edition of Fallout 3 for $20. It didn't disappoint for a LONG time. I played the hell out of this game. Then, unfortunately, the save file got over 10MB. I soon started getting crashes. I played through them to a point, but by the time I got to the Point Lookout DLC, the game was unplayable. So, I started a new game and did a speed-run to Point Lookout so I could play it through. And I did.
Overall: just an incredible game. Thanks for bringing me back, Matty.

I believe Fallout 3 still holds up because it's the epitome of what a Bethesda RPG is at its core. Even though it's not an original IP, the way it's executed is not replicated in other games (outside Bethesda) as many claim. There is something distinctly Bethesda about FO3 even more so than in their previous fantasy games. I actually prefer FO3 to FNV. FNV is good, but FO3 has a better atmosphere and contains a lot of hidden choices & consequences compared to FNV's more obvious, in-your-face choices.

Very random but the starting areas of Fallout 3 and New vegas are actually so different tonally it was quite jarring playing F3 recentley. Fallout new vegas presents a ton of characters and choices pretty quick while fallout 3 feels a lot more isolated and more like a wasteland. Not saying one is better then the other but the openings are so damn different and the games actually feel quite different as well to some degree

    • @R-YR29

Yea fallout 3 is similar to 4 where they basically have you on a rail to info dump about your situation in the world rather than let you experience it.
Idk if you ever played Homefront back in the day but that and 4 have the longest drags of intros

    • @Patrickdaawsome

Everyone has different experiences, but I felt more comfortable in F3 than New Vegas. Went through a more immersive experience going into Megaton, doing the quests that come from there, then going on my own journey when I felt ready.
In New Vegas, exploration felt too directed through certain parts and I don't like how perception changed to not show red markers. Platinum chip is supposedly so important, but it didn't feel like it. Hoover dam war was kinda cool, but not as badass as Liberty Prime. The results of the actions from that war also didn't feel so impactful to me.
      To each their own

@@Patrickdaawsome The major difference is that New Vegas, like Fallout and Fallout 2, is more about the rebuilding of different civilizations within a post apocalypse. Then exploring the morals and ideologies of the types of groups that would emerge. Bethesda goes more for just a post apocalypse shooter without the rebuilding or interesting factions. Their worlds are far more stagnant and bleak. Fallout was initially about the rise and fall of new empires in the wasteland. All with their own unique characters and ideologies to explore and interact with.

I hadn’t thought about it before , but I agree totally. In F3, when that vault door closes, and you step out - that feeling of isolation in a strange world hits you perfectly. In NV you step out of Doc Mitchell’s house into a friendly town - ready to gather strength and seek vengeance. So glad both games were made and show how the same engine and game world can be used in different ways to tell compelling stories.

I'll never forget the first time I played this back in 2008, the first time I stepped out of the vault and the first place I wandered into was Springvale elementary school. And as I started to take out a gang of raiders and mole rats...I giddily realized I was embarking into something special. The perfect game I'd always wanted. A lifelong fan of all things post-apocalyptic (before it was fashionable) and the 50s post modern sci-fi aesthetic, I fell in love with this series immediately and spent untold hundreds of hours wandering the wastelands over and over. All hail the Republic of Bob.

Fallout 3 honestly has one of the best tutorial segments in a video game. It naturally teaches you almost all of the game mechanics you will be using for the entire game. How to use guns, talk to people for different responses and choices, how to open and navigate your pip boy to check equipment and notes, and that this world is harsh and cruel.
And it never feels like it's questioning your intelligence as a gamer.

Old man gamer, here. Took a few years off from gaming from the mid 90s until around the end of the first XBox era because games hadn't progressed to the extent I had hoped and weren't really getting better for me. Got an XBox and a bunch of games recommended by the sales clerk at Game Stop in like 2005 and got hooked into a couple a great titles like Halo and GTA, but then I started playing Bethesda's Morrowind and was blown away. Put hundreds of hours into that one. Fast forward to owning the 360 and getting that first Bethesda Fallout game after playing ES4, and it was a revelation. Thanks Matty! Maybe a mods extravaganza for these older games is in order to help them look their best? Or we can hope Capital Wasteland mod is dropping soon for FO4:)

I use a full DLC delayer to stop and pace the DLCs, but a simple pop up blocker would work too... as for the level up you can change the XP to level up slower, I use a 2X xp needed to level. But the mod had like 50 different esp file options, if you even slow down the leveling by a little bit you won't level up until Megaton

Fallout 3 is definitely a very nostalgic game for me. It was my introduction to the Fallout franchise back when it released. I was already familiar with Morrowind and Oblivion so I knew I may be into whatever Bethesda’s Fallout 3 turned out to be. I loved it and I’m still a huge Fallout fan to this day. I then ended up going back and played Fallout and Fallout 2. Got New Vegas and Fallout 4 on release as well when they ended up coming out. I’ve played the heck out of each one. Fallout 3 will always hold a special place in my heart and I have a ton of fond memories with this game.
That being said, after playing it every so often over the duration of over a decade, you start to see the cracks in the foundation. Especially after going back and playing Fallout and Fallout 2 multiple times. As well as seeing how much New Vegas accomplished as an RPG with such little development time and the same game engine. Playing Fallout games spread across multiple decades, across many different development teams. Putting thousands of hours into dozens of play throughs across all of these games just gets you thinking after a while. Then returning to Fallout 3 once again recently and doing all of the named content and DLC for old times sake. I just can’t help but realize how many shortcomings Fallout 3 actually has as an RPG. Especially a Fallout RPG. In 2008 I was unfamiliar with Fallout, so I never had a baseline or expectations as to what Fallout really was or could be. Once I started playing Fallout and Fallout 2 and getting invested fully into the lore and stories of the franchise I started to realize how hollow Fallout 3 actually was. The story is entirely linear. Not only that but it is exceptionally poorly written and has tons of plot holes. Both within its own narrative as well as with regards to all of the previous lore. It tends to entirely disregard all of the rich lore and storytelling in the original games. There are no real choices in the game besides some very black and white quick ones without much or any consequence. The perks are really poorly done, almost always just raising skill points as opposed to doing interesting things. There are no traits or any other interesting mechanics.
A big one is that there are only 18 named side quests as opposed to Oblivion’s 200+ quests and New Vegas’ 80+ quests. I am a full believer in quality over quantity so that alone isn’t an issue. However, many of Fallout 3’s named side quests are simple fetch quests and the ones with any level of choice usually end very quickly with a basic good or evil option which hardly changes anything if at all. I don’t mind basic quests or the odd fetch quest either. The problem is that with less than 20 in the whole game, your side quests need to be far better and more engaging than collecting an item. If you have 200+ quests like Oblivion, you can spare a few dozen simple quests without diluting the package. In Fallout 3 I notice the issue far more easily due to the lack of content.
Regardless, I still play the game and enjoy it. It was my introduction into the franchise and as I said I have a ton of fond memories of this game. It’s just that upon experiencing all of the games fully and seeing what the franchise is capable of at its best. How rich the stories and narrative can be. The variety of story when you have actual choices and consequences. I find it increasingly difficult to overlook the many issues within Bethesda’s Fallout titles the more I learn about this franchise. I would love for Bethesda to come out swinging with Fallout 5 and it ends up being a phenomenal RPG. It’s just that between Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, as well as Fallout 76, I’m struggling to believe that Bethesda could ever capture Fallout to its fullest RPG potential. They very much seem to focus on the wrong things.
