I'm so glad to find this. I am 67 and just barely remember the Latin Mass. I've never been particularly interested in it until today, when I read the news that, in conformity with Pope Francis' latest restrictions, the Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia, is only allowing eight of his 70 parishes to celebrate the Latin Mass. And to add insult to injury, those eight are not allowed publish the schedules in their bulletins, parish websites or social-media channels! Even worse, five of them may not celebrate the Latin Mass inside their churches! Suddenly, I find myself terribly interested in experiencing and understanding it!

This is great! I'm new to the faith and I've been searching for something concise that tied a missal to an actual Latin mass. This was perfect! I have the red book so I was able to follow along. I usually struggle to follow even the simple missal as I get lost during the silent prayers, but your tips on which physical cues to look for are incredibly helpful! I can't wait to show my husband! The parts that still confuse me during mass are when the people should respond with the server and when they are to remain silently prayerful and if/when to sing along with the choir. Thank you for taking the time to do this!

Why the Secret, aka private - whispered, prayers by the priest? Because God is the focus of the whole action, it is His Act, and we fully participate in the activity with gentle devotion. Just place yourself as a child beside your father, on occasion you love to whisper a little secret to him and he loves to hear your simple confidences.
It is the same in the secret chamber of one's heart, where one withdraws to pray to God. This is true also of the Family of God when drawn together with our Mother, the Church, but here we also have our parts to play, and our brothers and sister to consider - recalling that the Lord is God of order not disorder. All of us at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, then, are not called by our Father to join Him in a jolly barbeque or a tournament-final snack fest, we come to stand with His Son, the Lord God our Brother in the Holy Ghost, present at the foot of calvary on which He died for us sinners, once for all; it is a meal, a sacrificial meal, a meal that is a mystery even to the cleverest minds and yet home to the simplest heart.

Different perspective .... we are asked to participate in mass , but can one really participate without knowing what is said ?? The whole ceremony is very reverent. But it feels as is we are only watching not participating . Unless you truly understand Latin . This mass could actually be said in Russian or Chinese and it would sound the same . I prefer to understand and be able to pray in a language I understand . Very beautiful ceremony , but inviting a convert to this mass I would find difficult . When said person asks what the priest said... I would say , oh, look in the red book and interpret as you think. Or learn Latin . Just a bit of food for thought , my point of view is not meant to offend.

@@kristenstudebaker814 since Jesus, you are personally can turn trough Jesus to God. The Catholic priest still convince the people that they do it for you because they are the MALES???) Not aloud them to let you aware of your spiritual equality in front of God, because you are just a f..ing or holy woman. Get up and walk, darling!!! (and ask a good friend to pray for you or with you, because she or he knows what you need!!! And according Jesus' promise He is among you!!

@Janette Davis I believe the same, but some of Jesus' teachings "modified" ignored, changed..... If Jesus Jesus in the EUCHARIST why we pray in the mass that we proclaim your dead Lord until you come.
