- IMPORTANT NOTE: After more long-term testing, I do NOT recommend this flight controller for use with the DJI system because the 9V regulator is not a sufficient power source. While it worked for me on this one board (which is why I used it for this video) many others have reported the DJI system cutting out due to insufficient power. I recommend using the Hobbywing flight controller. The connections shown in this video still apply, just use a FC with a more reliable power supply.
Walking through the different connections for the DJI Digital FPV System.
1:25 - Power & Ground (red & black wires) - powers the system so that it will provide video to the goggles. The system can now be used for FPV
3:15 - MSP connection (white & grey wires) - connects the DJI Air Unit to betaflight which will allow for data communication. Provides for On Screen Display, PID tuning, and other functions in the DJI goggles
5:52 - RX connection (yellow & brown wires) - DJI Air Unit provides reciever signal to Betaflight. SBUS or DJI HDL protocol

Does this apply to the V2 JB F4 board? I thought they improved the robustness of the 9V regulator in the V2.

Concur. There's a lot of misinformation about the system too in which I often refer them to this video about how you CAN use this with your own transmitter. People want to hate it because it's DJI but honestly healthy competition just breeds better products all around. System is by no means perfect but glad to see progression and then further competition.
I just can't understand why DJI releases products like this without an OSD. They did it with the ocusync and they've done it again here. I like to fly with a camera drone and I'd like an OSD. Do that and I might get it. Until then I'll keep using the awesome ezwifibroadcast system that costs a hell of a lot less and it ticks all the boxes for me. 😀

I can see why you have more views, I'm thinking of switching to dji after 3 years of analog of starting fpv ..Only thing is price... time to bite the bullet. Seriously do they? I've been hoping they would. where can I find the info on that? Not crazy about DJI wanting all our info just to turn on the goggles.
@@calabrese221 looks like it's a groundstation and they are working with hd-zero, but it appears it would allow you to use your own HDO's and TX. You'd have to buy the groudstation and their camera unit. I'm only going off the things I have seen, but they say they should have them in reviewers hands in a couple weeks, so I will stay tuned for now. DJI has set the bar high though with their package, but I will wait to see what FS has in store for us, before buying....

A couple questions: In your experience, 1) should I get the dji digital or wait for other systems?, 2) can you pair a mobile phone to dji goggles so another person sees what I see?, 3) would you recommend the dji transmitter/controller or get another brand? thank you!
Hi Drew, Got a problem if you have a moment. I have the Riot Control F4 and just wired up the FPV Air Unit. I'm finding that the Riot Control 9V BEC is not providing adequate power to the Air Unit...it continuously powers on and off and won't output a video signal. I can successfully power the Air Unit directly from VBAT on 4s, but unfortunately my build is set up to fly best at 6s which will fry the Air Unit.
I'm assuming the JB board you show in your video has a more robust 9V (maybe more amperage or watts?). I may have to upgrade, but I was bummed the 9V pad on the Riot Control isn't cutting it. Any other ideas or workarounds, or is the JB board FTW?

Yes the 9V reg on our board is not sufficient. I also do not recommend the JB board. I started having issues with that regulator too.
The board that has proven to have the most reliable power supply, is the hobby wing FC. It has a two amp 12 V regulator that does an excellent job of reliably powering the DJI air unit.
@@drib2896 Thanks for the reply. I had a CLRacing F4s lying around, and its 9v 2a pad ended up working great for the Air Unit. Had a great flight session with it today.

Thanks drew! Finally someone explained in detail more about installing. How does the dji system work when flying alongside analog? Any interference either way? Id hate to fly with my friends and mess up their feed.
I was concerned that telemetry and therefore OSD would only work if you used their RX, this is a pretty big deal and a good enough excuse for me not to wait for the "FatShark" option. I am surprised this isn't made more obvious from their marketing/faq/manuals/whatever - didn't see that this was an option anywhere! Thanks for the detailed explanation Drew ❤️
Now if only DJI would add the stock to their EU store...
Looks good but needs a module version so people can use existing goggles. Price eliminates most hobiests.

Thank you for your video! It helped me a lot in troubleshooting. I connected serial cable tx and rx wires so no osd at all. But thanks to you i found the problem!

While they are getting osd sorted let them know it needs to be compatible with inav as well, need to use it in a wing
its not realy a system for longer range as it is a bidirectional transceiver link. for long range you need a oneway link like "fpv blue"

That's wild man. I gotta get that. I do range tests on all my radios. That's the first thing I'll do against my crossfire. I've done this with all my radios Frsky spectrum and crossfire. I put the transmitter on my coffee table (ground level) go outside into my truck and just drive with the transmitter. I've gotten farthest with crossfire dynamic range works every time. . I get 1km almost exactly through many building as I live in populated area.
We totally need a tear down of the gear, specially the air box and goggles. Lets see if it can be made much smaller. On the plus side though, with DJI in the game, Fatshark need to up their game or lower prices. Real competition is here.

Hello guys. how do you enable the dji hdl protocol from betaflight? I can't use betaflight version 10.6 and firmware 4.1 on fc.ma nothing appears
I'm having the same problem Fortunato trying to get battery power from the bird to show up in my DJI goggles .. Can't get the HDL protocol and I even tried the unofficial 10.6.0 and 4.1 that are listed in the unstable versions of betaflight for my FC and I'm using the same FC as Drew is in this video ..

This product is pretty damn interesting and in my opinion one of the biggest innovation in FPV industry over the years. Im wondering several things. First - will it sell well enough for the second generation to be created. Second - if not how long it will be supported by DJI in the sense of software development so far, it can be safely said that it is a prototype very good but still a prototype. For example you cana djust PIDs on gogles but you can't show OSD data - I think just firmware update to fix it. DJI did one very importand thing with this system. They showed that a digital HD FPV and low latency system can be made relatively small and not that horribly expensive (stil not cheap but can be accepted). I think that this product will have serious impact in the future FPV market. DJI was basically absent from this market past years and people flying racing/FPV drones often joked with DJI users that they don't know how to fly real drone ;) Now DJI gives FPV pilots a product about which everyone quietly dreamed in some degree. We live in really interesting times.
PS.What an irony ;) HD FPV is now hooked to J.Bardwell's FC. J.Bardwell himself said one day that such a system is loooooong future ;)

I'm still having a problem trying to get battery voltage from the bird to display in the DJI goggles .. I've download BETAFlight 10.6.0 and I'm running 4.1.0 firmware on the bird.. there's still no DJI_HDL_7MS protocol listed in the RX dropdown menu and from my understanding you have to have that before it will work.
Same here, but my OSD works, my sbus doesn't work
Same with Matek CTR F405, maybe all chipsets/manufacturers are not ready atm.
I still don't know about this. Definitely a step in the right direction though.

as much as I know dji puts out great products, I need to know I can get any and all telemetry and FC data into the OSD if I choose. specifically, home orientation arrow and speed from my GPS receiver. a third party promise about this isn't enough for me to pull the trigger yet. also, fatshark just announced their digital HD fpv system, so...
Not available yet, it should be really easy for dji to implement it, I hope they don't pass on it as it is of critical importance when flying distance.

The the 9V Regulated pad on that Bardwell board isn't enough. My Air unit was turning off and rebooting after hard flips/rolls. I wired mine direct to ESC +/- pads (vbatt) ( I'm on 4s ) and now it works fine.

So, if you only wire the red and black for power, you said you can get your HD-Dog to your goggles. Is it also recording to on-board recorder on the Air Unit? Or do you only get the video to the goggles and then record it there? Thx

I’m having an issue with my FPV system.
1) I can’t switch my power from 25mw to 700mw
2) my aircraft voltage and flight time do not show
3) I only have channel 1-3 and 8.
Im having a similar problem............
I believe 1 and 3 have to do with the system not thinking I’m in the United States. Other regions only allow 25mw and limited channels. Just don’t know how and where to change.

You have to unlock FCC mode with your micro SD.. there is a tutorial on YT :)
I had range problem and i thank that it was the mode 25mw. I switched into 700mw and i still have issues.
How is your dji range guys ? Inm less than 600m in an open field... so disappointed
Your OSD is still quite minimal? What is the arrow pointer on bottom right? Is that associated with Home GPS Location?

get the Orqa , no doubt.. With Fatshark HD it's the best you will have when it's out.

Little update as I ran into trouble getting this set up.
DJI HDL has been removed in the latest Betaflight 4.1 RC and configurator beta. now you select SBUS and add CLI command "set sbus_baud_fast = on" and set DJI HDL in the googles and you should be good to go - Developers somehow think making it a CLI switch is easier...
This didn’t work for. Still had video feed but no rx signal.
I hope they are going to include a connector with some decent silicone wire for the production models. That looks like the cheapest plastic coated wire you can buy. I noticed that in the closeups on the rotor riot video. The wire insulation looked like it melted.😪

Hi. I got a question. Can you use the Dji remote control for multiple quads that have the Dji air units installed. For example. I have quad 1 and 2. Can I use either quad 1 with the same remote control and then half hour later switch over to quad 2 with the same remote control? Like a Taranis x9D remote where I can change the model (quad) on the remote control.

If the wires are plastic wire, should recommend them to use silicone wires. I see from the shape of wires after you tweezed them.

Lots of questions!! So I am not using a Long Range receiver mod like the TBS or R9. Would you recommend going this route with the DJI? I have a Session and GP 7 that I currently use for recording, but it appears that the DJI setup would preclude the requirement of me mounting a go pro?
