    I owned this microphone for about a month. I'm a flute player and this mic wasn't great for my purpose. There was a peak at about 3800hz that I just couldn't smooth out and the harshness that the boost introduced made my recordings unacceptable. That said, I sold the mic to a guitar player who used it on his amp cabs and loves it. A good microphone for some people isn't always a good choice for others. I've had three Rode mics (NT1a, NT3 and this one) and wanted to love them all but I own none of them now. I might have kept the NT1a but a cheaper better solution came along and I sold the NT1a to buy that one. Rode does have a great warranty and excellent customer service here in Aussie and they will be good choices for many people, I'm maybe not one of them.

      Thanks for sharing the real world experience with this mic. It's interesting to know that this does not work on Flute recordings. Appreciate it.

      The M3 is awesome on guitar amps, I'm not such a fan of it on vocals, it's a little dark sounding to me. The NT3 it much better on vocals, especially in a mix.

      @theinvisibleman Wow theinvisibleman, I'm REALLY sorry. I just today saw your question. Don't know how I missed that..Anyway, I'm not in a position to buy what I like but if I could I'd probably buy an AKG C451b or an AKG C414 for flute. I've used both in a real studio and the sound was wonderful. I've also used a few mid-range Neumanns that were great too but I tend to lean in on them a bit too much for that proximity effect. These days, I make home recordings with a Rode NT1a that Mister Rode GAVE me through a happy accident prompting me to sell off the "cheaper better solutions" I reference above. I had been using a few mics from iSK, the BM700 (a poor man's NT1a) and one called simply Pearl. Both were good cheap options but I wouldn't go back to them. My NT1a is probably with me for the remainder of my home recording projects. As the man said "money's too tight to mention". On really dynamic pieces/playing I have to work hard with EQ and compression to smooth out the upper frequency humps on the NT1a but it's a small price to pay. I'd like a better mic but as it is as I said. For my live gigs on flute, those that survived coronavirus and all the ones that came before, I use a Shure Beta 98 with a belt pack preamp. I've also used a Beta 57 and it seemed like a full-size dynamic version of the Beta 98 sound. Great stuff. If you're a flute player, good luck. No one understands us in the gear shops.

      Podcastage if that's the case then I prolly should buy the Scarlett studio solo bundle? I am new to recording even though I have done some covers with the AT2020 and NT1A. but personally I am new to home studios. I am about to set up one for myself as an individual. what would you suggest? a bundle pack or an interface with a different mic?

    So I actually used the M3 for about a year onstage, for lead vocals. Which sounded fantastic. Without the pop filter, the detail was next level for live work..but....no suprise, the drummer bled to much in to the mic, and I moved on to Blue powered dynamic mic for vocals. It was a fun experiment. 👍

    I really like that microphone. As you said, it has a very nice tone and it's nice that it fits in a standard microphone clip. Sometimes it's nice to have that as a mounting option depending on your project.

      Contract states I can't, unfortunately... It's not been published yet. No real guarantee it will. Lol that's the publishing industry tho. I've probably done thirty jobs that way so far. Would love to. The studio the company signed out for me to use, the booth had three of these in a half circle, so that no matter where I turned while reading they'd catch it at the same levels. I really want to get one for personal use. Start doing independent recordings out of the house. But when you voice act, freelance, you go where they send you...

    • @Podcastage

    Just curious if you have a recommendation for a shock mount for the Rode M3. I have a boom mounted to the ceiling in a home studio, and it tends to amplify vibrations from people moving around upstairs. It has a 34mm body, and it seems like most decent shock mounts have the Goldilocks syndrome. Too big or too small. I found one cheapy one that barely fits, so there is hardly any vibration reduction. Any ideas?

    I'm using this mic for my classical guitar, and just as a flute player noted, there is a peak at about 3,8kHz that is very hard to smooth out. It makes the sound of the guitar too "hard" or harsh, when I would prefer s softer darker sound. Adjusting in the EQ afterwards really doesn't work that well. Of this also depends on the room I record in. Do you have any recommendations for a mic for the classical guitar?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад

      I haven't recorded classical guitar before, but for classical recordings I believe the goal is to get a more natural sound. The Shure KSM141 is pretty neutral but a bit on the brighter side. The Neumann KM184 is also a very clean and smooth sounding SDC. More affordable stuff would be the sE Electronics SE8 which is relatively affordable and sounds pretty darn good (I haven't done a full review of that one yet, but have done one of the sE7).

    The best thing to raise the quality of the microphone
    Audio Interface or Phantom Power Supply

  • @onzkicg
    @onzkicg 3 года назад

    Your reviews are amazing! By the way, since you’ve tried hundreds of microphones- would you recommend getting a dedicated mic preamp before the audio interface? Is there a need for that? I use Presonus Audiobox, and I have to dial the gain to 7-8 (if max is 10) in order to get a good signal. Is that normal for dynamic mic? Thanks

    • @agambhasin
      @agambhasin 2 года назад +1

      Which dynamic mic are you using? Also most interfaces provide sufficient gain to even power the most gain hungry SM7B, but the audiobox kinda lacks in that department plus it has noisy preamps, so if your interface’s preamps are not at optimal noise levels, sure go ahead & get a mic activator, otherwise no need

    • @onzkicg
      @onzkicg 2 года назад +1

      @@agambhasin Thanks! As this was 8mo ago already, fast forward today I was able to get Preamp, Behringer ultramic100. I’m interested with the Cloudlifter but exceed my budget.
      But to be honest, I’m not sure if it improved the audio or not. The volume definitely yes. But in either way, with or without preamp- there’s always a need to find that sweet spot of fuller input but less noise.
      I have different dynamic mic, without preamp- most of them needed 3-4o’clock dial in audio interface. But with preamp, Just 10-12 o’clock will do.
      The loudest dynamic I used is Senheisser e935, this is surprisingly picking up louder compared to others it’s like as if there’s a built in preamp already. Thanks 🙏

    I use for close up voice recording and have to say I think this mic is really superb. You can tweak in post and all the problems I get are mainly with whatever internal amp I use. Stunning value on this mic.

    I had a look at this microphone a few years ago, but instead purchased the Rode NT3. Would be interesting to see which you would choose Bandrew.

    Could you do a review on the rode broadcaster

      Joshua Kirby already did, search the channel.

      The broadcaster is actually a bit out of my budget right now since I have to buy all these with my own money. That's almost the entire budget I have for this channel each month. Haha. Down the line I will absolutely add it to the poll though.

    A nicely robust condenser microphone. What could possibly go wrong? After just a few years' occasional use - hours per year for Teams meetings - it just failed.

      I'm having the same problem! Did you manage to get it open???

    • @WaltonV
      @WaltonV 2 года назад

      @@jayreynolds521 About 1-2 years ago I've tried to open it again, but the spin to unstuck it made it torn apart (twisted) with the 3 XLR wires. Since half of the wires torn away were not too small, I got to use the mic by "plugging" it into them with some cable ties
      , a workaround... But my studio setup was so awful.
      Then, I saw a video showing it disassembled and figured that half of the mic parts got stuck inside the other half (the battery compartment).
      I got to unstuck this broken piece still hardly with pliers, and then unscrewed this XLR bottom part in order to put back new or repaired metal wires.
      And here I am...
      The only thing left is to find or to fix these wires to plug it back into a single piece. And then I think I'll untwist and glue the plastic parts.

    • @WaltonV
      @WaltonV 2 года назад

      I took the measure of the thickness* of the metal wire: 0.70 mm, and I think it is bronze or brass (it's yellowish)

    • @WaltonV
      @WaltonV 2 года назад

      I used a CR-V PH000 bit to unscrew it

    • @kiliwami4086
      @kiliwami4086 8 лет назад

      Podcastage that doesn't Matter if Its a USB Mic or a XLR Mic, only the Sound quality, which one is better

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 лет назад

      As a matter of fact, it does matter. The NW700 relies 100% on how you're going to be connecting it. I personally would prefer the NW700 because it's an XLR microphone and the sounds qualities aren't too different. So....I PERSONALLY would go with the nw700. I have reviews of both those mics though, so you can check them both and decide which one you think sounds better and which tone you like better.

    With these reviews, do you use your own money to buy these mics? Or are these videos sponsored in some way.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  8 лет назад

      Matrix I buy them all with my own money. If I receive a microphone from the company, I disclose that in the video. I've only done a few videos where I'm provided with the mic. I also never accept money from a company I'm reviewing.

    • @Matrix96
