I wanted to take a minute to thank you for your excellent videos I am legally blind and physically handicapped and I'm about to start up a podcast to encourage people who are in a like position. Although I've been a semi-professional musician for years and worked in information technologies your videos have been an invaluable resource to help me get this underway. Once again sir thank you very much
Dynamic mic it is as filtering out background noise in post hurts my quality I've used USB condenser mics in the past so until i can have a better recording space dynamic sounds like the right choice. Thanks for educating me :)
Thank you very much sir. That really means a lot as that's what I was shooting for. I had to run it by a few people before publishing it because I wanted to make sure that I didn't overlook anything! Again...thank you!
Dude this video, is what i want ALL RUclips videos to be like, short, precise, to the point and obviously informative. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH, I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR EFFORT...left a sub, best of luck bro
A very good primer on mics with one exception. All microphones have a pickup pattern that determines where it picks up sound from. Three common types (there are several others) are cardioid, omni-directional and uni-directional. Some mics even have an adjustable pattern. His dynamic mic has a cardioid pattern which means it gathers sound strongly from the front but is much weaker from the sides and get almost nothing from the rear. You can buy cardioid condenser mics. In other words, the technology, condenser vs dynamic, is less important than it's pickup pattern in determining from where sounds will come through.
Dynamic microphones typically do a better job than condenser microphones at rejecting background noise, even compared to condenser microphones. That's partly due to the underlying technology. Condenser microphones are just more sensitive in general, especially outside the midrange frequency ranges of the human voice.
Thank you. Your videos strike a really good balance - intelligent without being too geeky, and entertaining without being too distracting from the subject. Someone asked me yesterday if I knew the difference between dynamic and condenser mikes, and I said I wasn't sure. I watched your video, then sent it to him because you explain it much better than I could.
For ham Radio, dynamics only please. The background pickup with condenser mics is brutal: they pick up noise from my keyboard, the dog snoring in the corner and even my wife doing dishes downstairs.
@@xXx_Oshino_xXx A lot of people hate dynamics for gaming because they have to have a mic in their face, but as long as you have a boom, it's not a big deal. I think the Electro-Voice mics are best for this because they control plosives super well and variable D takes care of the proximity effect so you don't have to worry about mic technique while playing. Most gamers I see with dynamics have an SM7B, though it's hard to fault them for that choice either.
Me too - my university students were laughing about what my kids were saying in the bg of my lectures. I now use a VST denoise plugin which uses an algorithm - it’s surprisingly effective and seems to preserve quality. Search for dev Werman on Github if you want to try it.

Thank you for sharing your expertise. I record online classes in my home office (in a relatively quiet basement) and I am working on improving the audio quality. I've watched several of your videos and will watch several more before making my final decisions about equipment. Just wanted to say thanks for all the effort you have put into creating these videos.
Nice vid. The comparison was great. I think one solution - for those that don't know which one to get ------- the answer is to get BOTH types. Good quality ones.
Good video. Some or actually MANY people must understand that a condenser shouldn't be used outside a properly treated room. It just doesn't fit. I made my mistakes in the past, but learned fast, and now I only use dynamics in my regular room space.
Great explanation of the two types. I know a few things about each, but didn't realize all the differences you pointed out. Thanks for this video! *Keep it up!*
Nice work as always. I tend to use dynamics for myself and anyone on my show that has an understanding of mic technique. I'll put guests on a condenser, as they're a bit more forgiving on distance, for those not comfortable with staying in a dynamic's "sweet spot."
I too am a huge fan of dynamics for my podcasts. I do need to work on my mic technique though. I just eat the damn things, but lucky for me the Procaster and SM7b have a decent depth to them so the proximity effect is not too bad.
Podcastage Right. My poor technique is a product of singing in to SM58s in bars with garbage sound systems and trying to hear myself. If I keep the mic INSIDE my mouth, maybe I'll be able to hear better :) Plus, it's a security blanket. I feel more anchored on stage if I'm touching the mic from time to time.
I got in to podcasting about a year ago and you were the very first channel I visited when I wanted to buy a microphone. You sir are an absolute genius, thank you for all your help! Definitely looking to upgrade my setup soon with the Rode PROcaster.
Just started have wind noise issues with my rode nt1 mic black just like yours. I've plugged it into scarlet focus right and Yamaha mixers and get loud blowing noises and silent voice pickup. Any ideas why I can do to resolve this? Tried a few xlr cables with same results.
I have no idea what would be causing that. No audio is picked up? You just get static? You've ruled out the cable and interface. That sounds like you should contact Rode and report that to try and get a replacement.
are you using the pop filter? if not I believe the moisture from your breath can interfere with the capsule if you get too close, preventing it from working
Some of my clients got that issue, it's very probably a humidity problem, I've seen some people blow dry the capsule and fix the problem, not even kidding
Thank you very much for laying out the differences between Dynamic & Condenser microphones. Your video was very straight forward and easy to follow. Thanks again. Two thumbs up.
Thanks for the information. I never understood the differences between them. I own a AudioTechnica AT 2020 and a Behringer XM8500 and I usually go for the AT 2020. I think it sounds better and it's mostly quiet around my house. Still, I'll try the dynamic mic more to see the differences. Keep up the good work.
Dropping facts, even 6 years ago! I'm more shocked by the hatless presentation! There also seems to be far more space in your room back then, unless it's just a very different lens.
Wow. Thanks for watching all the way back. The room looks a lot smaller on camera because I was using a 10-18mm lens and was wide open at 10mm, now I use 18-35 at 18mm. But also there's a lot more stuff and the rack to my left makes the room look a lot smaller too.
Really good to know stuff! Some more demonstrations would be great but how it is it's straight to the point and easy to understand. I will definitely be taking notes whenever I try making content
The Heil PR40 dynamic mic has some of the best rear-end rejection while still picking up sound from the sides of the mic so you don't always have to talk right into the front like the mic you are demonstrating here.
This might be the most practical comparison video on condenser vs. dynamic mics for a lot of people. However, you could probably mentioned around 2:40 that a dynamic needs a quiet (i.e. expensive) preamp/interface due to the low sensitivity. Otherwise the recorded sound may have audible background noise which is not accepted at least for certain types of recordings.
Previously I asked what mic I should use but I forgot one factor. I will quickly re summarize. I have a lot of background noise air conditioner, I'm in an apartment, smoke detector occasionally beeps and all that. The one thing I forgot is i need it to be a USB microphone or one that plugs into the mic in on the computer. I don't have a sound interface and would prefer not to buy one. Thanks for the previous reply, and great video Bandrew!
Honestly.. now that I found you 🙄😁, I don't need to go anywhere else. God bless you for breaking things down in such a simple way for everyone to understand. 🙌🙏
Got the answers I needed. I can't control the settings I shoot in, so I'll favor dynamic mics. Now I have to figure out how to run several mics into a Zoon H4n.
So I've decided to get a dynamic mic to get that awesome radio host sound for a podcast because my room isn't treated either. What recorder do you use for multiple mics? I saw your video to record multiple USB mics, but what are my options to record a multiple XLR mics for an interview podcast???? What are my different options and the price range for each option? I hope that I can use a USB interface that connects directly to my laptop, but I can also just use a recorder so I can have different tracks to control volume and clipping.
Kimberly Ann Baity You would use a USB audio interface. It would have one or more XLR inputs for microphones and a USB out that goes to your computer. Your computer would receive a separate track for each of the mic's so you can adjust as necessary for each one separateLy. HTH
Thank you for the video. I guess I need a dynamic mic for podcasting, also for the procaster mic, I understand I need to buy an external soundcard to give power to it and connect it to a computer, (Focusrite Scarlett) this for instance. Am I right?
Radio people use dynamic because they are multiple people talking in the same room. If you're alone in a controlled room, where outside noise is not a problem, condenser is the best.

This video with practical demo has almost cleared all the doubts related to selection of mic, it helped me to decide to chose dynamic because of not having controlled situations like a studio. Thank you dear for your valuable content.
Also a condencer is better if you do wana record anbiance. John Ziniger a mike expert at the american printing house for the blind AKA APH says that for the best most true sound get a small diaphragam omni mike. A pare if you want stereo. I know I'm going beond the scope of the vid because you focus on podcasting and not as much on field outdoors or just anbiance recording, but I'm an audio geek and I just had to geek out dude.
I agree, also, for indoor dialogue, I recommend a small diaphragm super or hyper cardioid condenser mic, they have better off axis rejection than typical cardioid mics and you dont have to eat the mic, meaning you can keep them out of the shot depending on what you are going for..
Absolutely. You'll often see an x-y setup of small diaphragm condensers for live classical or chorus performances. I have not done much sound design, but I imagine you would absolutely want a condenser because you are trying to capture the most authentic sound, and that's where condensers shine. Great post by the way. Thanks you for making the comment section smarter. =)
Thank you. As someone who is just starting out narrating children's stories for Autistic toddlers to be accessed via our website, this was useful information. Unfortunately, it has taught me I just purchased the wrong mic for the job (a dynamic) lol. Just ignore the rude and unpleasant comments, your voice is fine.
I think dynamic gets the job done. It’ll do you just fine if you use it right. I have that $100 sm58 and I think it sounds pleasantly smooth and makes my voice sound way nicer than it actually is. Not super harsh on the high end either.
There is a difference which is really noticeable when he played the guitar. The dynamic sounded muddled, like all the notes are jumbled up together making it a bit messy to listen to, while the condenser sounded cleaner and you can pick out the individual notes clearly. When talking though, he sounds better on the dynamic because his voice sounds fuller while on the condenser, he sounded thin. This is why radio and podcasts and anything that records talking favors dynamic mics, while playing intruments, singers, and other activities that either records a lot of sound at once or has a wide range of frequencies favor condenser mics. Edit: If you want to hear the "difference", get a headset or earphones (speakers won't really work for this), turn up the volume so it feels like you can hear him in your head but not too loud that it hurts, then listen in a quiet place where you won't be distracted.
Would a dynamic mic give decent results for single-mic'ing a singer songwriter? Or is a pair needed? I'm recording in an apartment, my condenser picks up the neighbours, traffic, etc. Many thanks,
Dynamic and condenser has got nothing to do with off Mike rejection which you were demonstration wrongly. For anyone reading this lookup polar pattern.
This is very informative . Touching aspects of the technicalities like listening to a physics class then straight to physics lab doing the hands on demonstration
Condensor microphones are shitty when it comes to you living next to a loud ass tv with fucking lawn mowers and fans on and membrane keyboards unsatisfying your ears
Watching this one video demystified the concept of Dynamic/Condenser microphones forever! Thank you so much - your video is invaluable for newbies like me.

Rapid, clear delivery of valuable information. I'd rather hear a higher pitched, trimmed elocution for instructional information than, let's say, James Earl Jones...although Jones is THE perfect Darth Vader. Great video and advice. Crystal clear. Thank you.
I knew nothing about this topic. My priority is background noise so.... a GREAT video for me 'cuz now I know to avoid Condenser and choose Dynamic. Your off-axis pickup demo of the differences was dramatic and the highlight of the video for me. I'm an ESL teacher in Osaka who WILL have his air conditioner going at full blast this summer (or I'll die) so... Thanks!
Thanks for the video and I really appreciate your effort in creating this video. I was about to purchase the condenser microphone but now after understanding the difference I will buy the Dynamic one.

It would be impossible for me to give any advice with that information. I have a BEST USB MIC UNDER $100 video that may help.
Thanks for the reply, will check that out :)
Brit Brandy should check out the toner condenser bm70 mic for 32$ with sabrent card and phantom power
Look for a used sm57 or sm58. Can find them all day on guitar center used gear page and they are nearlu indestructible.
I'm sorry.. This video was excellent, thank you! But, and I can't be the only one, I don't hear the slightest bit of difference between them...
Your headset/speakers are probably bad... :/
I hope it's not your ears...
It’s a difference
Many thanks,
Rode nt1 sounded wayyyyy better
Yeah, the other one Sounded really muffled
THIS VIDEO WAS CRUCIALLY HELPFUL! THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO MAKE IT!!!
Mic Dynamic For Beatbox 👍
is it too bad for a condenser micro? I record myself and my friends rap/trap songs but a friend of mine and I also do beatbox so idk what to buy :$
Excellent tutorial, thank you! I've "known" the difference...but didn't know why I knew - now I know!
cries in broke
Great explainer. Lifetimes would be saved if everyone did it this way.
Dynamic and condenser has got nothing to do with off Mike rejection which you were demonstration wrongly. For anyone reading this lookup polar pattern.
very informative. will share this with someone who has a problem with finding the difference between those microphones.
Am i the only one who find this helpful in 2o18 😂😉
2019
This is very informative . Touching aspects of the technicalities like listening to a physics class then straight to physics lab doing the hands on demonstration
Condenser mic are so much better, no contest.
Condensor microphones are shitty when it comes to you living next to a loud ass tv with fucking lawn mowers and fans on and membrane keyboards unsatisfying your ears
@@ethanwho_ what condensor mic you use?
@BladePlays do a lot of cars pass by your house?
@BladePlays wow, I was afraid of that, my home office faces the street, so for that I'm buying a dynamic mic
I always find comments so fascinating 😆. Very informative video.
Thanks a mill
Watching this one video demystified the concept of Dynamic/Condenser microphones forever! Thank you so much - your video is invaluable for newbies like me.
Thanks for your videos. Never knew you before, but now I guess I watched quite a number of your videos regarding the microphones!
Stumbled here somehow. You're a goddang genius at this, well done for doing what you do.
Really helpful video. Especially showing how the mics perform when you move your head around the mic.
This was EASILY the best breakdown i've watched thus far online. Thanks, man. So clearly explained. Keep up the great work, sir.
Thank you very much for saying so, and you're very welcome my friend.
This is extremely useful. Best mic reviews I've found on RUclips. Thank you!!
Dude you’re the guy I go to for sound stuff. No fluff pure knowledge and content. Keep doing you and by the way you have a great voice fuck the haters 👍🏼
Rapid, clear delivery of valuable information. I'd rather hear a higher pitched, trimmed elocution for instructional information than, let's say, James Earl Jones...although Jones is THE perfect Darth Vader. Great video and advice. Crystal clear. Thank you.
Clear and concise with examples!!! Doesn't get better! SUBSCRIBED!!! Thank you!
Thanks!
Just subscribed, you're a freaking pro. The way you present information is, in my opinion, perfect. Thank you, my good sir.
Decision made at 3:59
Yep still sticking with dynamic. It might not sound the best for guitar but it's impossible for me to control all the noise in my room.
Thanks for the video and I really appreciate your effort in creating this video. I was about to purchase the condenser microphone but now after understanding the difference I will buy the Dynamic one.
Wow.....this was very helpful. Was about to buy a condensor Mic but after seeing this realize I really need a dynamic mic
