Oh my, we haven't prepared a speech! I'd like to thank the Academy, Bandrew, the audio community, and of course my mum. This is a dream come true!
There you go Rode!
No complaints about bias or arguments with results, just pure class.
When a company makes competitively priced products, allowing the realization of inspired creators, to produce amazing content, with the quality level Rode products produce, they should get awards & acknowledgement for their efforts.
Rode, rightfully, has earned it's position across the board, as the most balanced producer of the budget minded audio gear, without sacrificing the highest quality performance.
Take your bow, you earn it.
I love my Rode Procaster too; thanks Rode, thanks Bandrew
Got the Procaster just over a month ago, and I love it =)
Yeppers!
Rode Rodecater Pro, Procaster & Podmic are just three absolute home runs, in their deep bench of home run hitters. Rode is one of the best examples among any company, in any industry, for delivering the best quality, most innovative, yet still fairly priced products for their consumers.
A company that actually listens & understands.
Well look at that got my Procaster three weeks ago... 😆😎
"This video cost me over $4,600."

LOL Great video! It was really informative, and was a great help!
That intro was epic!

This man needs all the credit.
Dude did this for 45k views. Even during the pandemic, not all heroes wear capes.
Seriously. This is remarkable determination. And crazy informative.

@@larryhinze8658 And the video was made in October 2019, before """the pandemic""", so not "during the pandemic".

dammit Kevin
Man I feel I should have to pay for this level of testing and detail. Thank you!
The Procaster also seems like a great buy for its price
I was wondering if I should get it or keep my sm58
@@caleb7122 The reality is you can tune just about any one of these mics to sound like any of the others. If you have an SM58, use EQ to brighten it up a bit, maybe use a high pass filter to take out some of the muddiness and you can squeeze the sound out of it that you want. And there are other handheld dynamics in the $100 range that may have the sound you're looking for like the AKG D5 and Sennheiser E835. But as a studio dynamic, it definitely hits above it's price point.
@@caleb7122 the SM58 is basically the SM7B so just keep it and try to stay a bit far away from the capsule to emulate the SM7B
Finally my search can come to an end. This is what I’ve needed. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
RE20 is just perfect. Perfect highs and present mids. A spot on blend in my opinion.
RE27 was disappointing tho!
youre both right
This is a classic work of tech scholarship, that should stand as a standard reference work for a generation. Or at least until 5 or 6 new microphones are invented.
I can't even begin to imagine how much time was spent on this, thanks for all your work!
What a massive work ! Thanks a lot Bandrew, so good as always !
Someone give this man an award! Dear god, my brain fried for you during those typing segments. This should hold as the MAIN one stop spot of a video for broadcast dynamic microphone shootouts since you pretty much covered all bases! Brilliant work, Bandrew. Now go order another pizza, lie down, and watch a horror flick. You've earned that at the very least 🤣
Finally a PROPER mic shootout. DAMN!! Mad editing.
Ok. This is epic. Thank you so much for all the time that went into this!
Also good job on finding a simpler video title!
Another thorough & great resource for people looking for a mic.
And lastly....#loyaltybadgehype
Thank you so much for the continued support Heather. You’re amazing! LoyaltyBadgeHype!
I am at a loss for words. This man did a keyboard test which is the whole reason i'm looking into these mics. I was just absolutely mind blown when he started doing it. I applaud this man 10000x over.
This was a phenomenal amount of hard work! Damn dude!! You are an absolute rock star for having done this for the community. Not only was the cost almost $5000, but the time involved was immense. I’m just getting into audio/video and I can already tell how long this took. Thanks again so much for what you gave to us here. Best wishes and regards!!
You just keep getting better and better. Thanks for putting so much effort into every video.
It really shows how subjective mic preference is when my favorite mic was the Aston stealth that he barely mentioned, great test
And that’s exactly why I make these videos. To include all of the sound samples in multiple situations so you can hear them and develop your opinion and select which one you like the best. ❤️
Today is the first day where the temperature has approached 40 degrees in South Australia this Spring and what a great way to welcome the heat for summer 19/20 than to win multiple, prestigious microphone awards from the Podcastage University Chairman! Great video mate, extremely thorough and also entertaining. Thanks for all the time, effort and expense you incurred making this review. All the best. Steve.
Brother I have to thank you for putting this together it was VERY HELPFUL. I'm blown away by the lengths you went to. Entertaining too. Thanks a million I'm now a subscriber!!!
I really appreciate that you retrospectively added the video timeline chapters for this video!
Is the pizza ever going to arrive? Nice to see the Procaster best for background noise rejection which was one of the main reason I bought one. That and it was cheaper than the SM7b. Massive respect for this video, it must have been a LOT of work.
Hi, rode website mention that smr pop filter (shock mount) is compatible with the procaster. Do you happen to have smr? Was thinking procaster might be too tall for the smr
You're completly insane! This is a great video/review. My winner is the Shure SM7b because I find it to be the most versatlie mic of them all. Plus it has a very natural and complementing Sound for your voice. Tanks for this! Keep on rocking!
can't wait for your condenser counterpart of this programme! it has been a nice 2019 for PODCASTAGE!
This is, by far, my favorite RUclips account. I LOVE YOUR WORK!
How could the top award not be the golden pizza award? I don't understand.
Great job, as always. I'm so surprised the SM7b won. That was sarcasm. I totally agree though. Again, great show!

Rode podmic is one of the worst sounding thing ever! You need to get your ears checked my friend!
@@mad_mario_ quackity uses it all the time and I never complain about it
@@mad_mario_ You need to check your ears, mate. I'm sorry your dollar store earbuds couldn't give you decent audio quality.
Fantastic shootout and thank you for going the extra length on all those details, especially things like using a metronome for the guitar parts so you could loop them seamlessly!! 👏👏👏👏
So much credit for making this - just the editing and organisation alone for making this video looks like a lot of work, never mind all the actual mic testing too!
Just the best mic review channel on YT.
What a fantastic test, Bandrew. Thank you. As an experiment, I matched the ‘wins’ between the Procaster and the Podmic. They both got exactly the same in terms of appearing in each ranking position! Both exceeding at different things.
It’s a nice way to see where two mics rank ... pick the two you’re considering and count the times they appear in your awards. Then listen to the video again and pick the one you like the sound of best!! Job done.......
For a week I guess! ; )
What stands out in all of you reviews is just how different all of these microphones sound with guitars. I would love to have a reference as to what the guitars sound like to the ears compared to the mics because they all sound acceptable, but I don’t know which might be closer to what you’re actually hearing when you play. For instance the acoustic is quite ‘jangly’ on some mics and smooth on others. Is it ‘jangly’ in real life?
Love your reviews!
we need to pay for this kind of content 😭😭😭
this guy deserves all the credit
It's clear this took a lot of effort and I've nothing to add but a huge thank you.
And heh, never thought that the choice you (and mike) helped me make (RE20) when I was shopping for a 'spoken word' mic, would end Nr 1 for that task in a 14 vs deathmatch couple years later. I've been 100% happy with it ever since.
I'm only surprised it didn't make it into the background noise rejection list, as it's the 2nd main reason I got it and it's been flawless in my untreated room, riddled with computer fans and coil whines :+)
Thanks again!
Thanks for making the most helpful and entertaining reviews in existence!
I love how by the time you got to the M82 room test your general positivity had been so stretched that your room went from "well treated" to "decently treated". Haha, thanks for the mammoth effort! ... And for our next category, 'Greatest Mic Test of All Time', the winner is... Bandrew! Wooo you get an award! (your award is a very much deserved bed)
Oh my god! That was completely unintentional! HAHA!
This video is a gift to RUclips.
Thank you for the hard work you put into this video! It was INCREDIBLY helpful!
A well done video, thank you for doing all those tests, it's really makes a difference listening to each and everyone of them. Love your videos and reviews!
The Best review that i see... and i finally like the Electro Voice RE20 :)
Really impressed with the podmic after this.
This was truly awesome. This must have taken great effort. I'm trying to get into voice work and your channel as well as booth junkie are more than helpful. I really appreciate it! You really earned my sub.
I'm going nuts on audio research and crazy with indecision. Thank you so much for this video. It really helped clear things up for me
Writing my opinion here after the testing but before your own to avoid influence.
To me, these tests really demonstrated why the SM7B and RE20 are just so popularized as "industry standard" broadcast mics. They really stood head and shoulders over almost every other mic tested not just in spoken word, but even in general use. The tests also show that, yes money can buy quality, as pretty much all the inexpensive mics generally sounded cheap. But, you really need to know what to look for! Mics within the same price range as the SM7B like the Telefunken sounded just... not great when put side by side, while the Neumann struggled to keep up even at nearly twice the price.
Røde had some good showings in here as well for the price, beating out not just their price competition, but punching well above their weight! Though my personal advice would probably be that unless it's impossible and you ABSOLUTELY need a good, solid mic NOW, then instead just pinch pennies for a while and save up for the RE20 or SM7B.
Edit post review: It seems like I was grading right about on the same train of thought here. The SM7B is just a "must have" of an established mic locker, EV makes great mics in general, (though I'm not entirely sold on the RE27, personal preference there) and that Røde is a pretty dang good manufacturer as well, (great for hobbyists and beginners looking for affordable quality!)
I loved reading through this. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the mics before getting to my conclusion. I love hearing your thought process and selections.
Mark you, the SM7B does need a very good pre-amp for its output is very low.
I love the Rode Procaster. Excellent ambient noise rejection, and coupled with a Cloudlifter it has a lot of gain range for the subject you put in front of it. Beautiful, rich sound, and half the price of the Shure SM7B. I have three of them!
This was an insane amount of work! Insane. And I appreciate every second. THANK YOU!!
Fantastic mic comparison and video production. Really helped in my decision making regarding a new purchase.
You are the best. Thank you!
Vídeo fantástico!!! Imagino que deve ter dado muito trabalho de fazê-lo. Merecia não apenas um like, mas vários likes!!!
I appreciate all of the effort that had to have went into recording and editing all of these segments and tests. Good job.
Whenever Bandrew criticizes a microphone for having poor plosive control, someone in the comments usually remarks to just use good mic technique to solve all issues. While pop filters and technique can go a long way towards that, I always find it interesting when he directly compares microphones and find that yes, some microphones are indeed legitimately awful at plosive rejection regardless of technique, so there's really not so much excuse when other microphones do it a lot less.
The Electrovoice options with their Variable technology did unsurprisingly good on the proximity effect test (as one would hope with that hyped technology!), but the SM7b actually held its own against them. Rode Procaster also did unusually good on its background/keyboard noise rejection. It wasn't until SM7b that I noticed anything comparable. That's also something I like about these kinds of mega tests--in a large field, find the one that does unusually good (or bad) against its peers in a certain category, those comparable by price, etc.
What I always find interesting in these large tests (10, 20, 30 things) is when a 'ringer' is thrown in, something that's close but doesn't quite belong. Like when you test 10 sports and supercars in handling, but have a separate test and thrown in one zippy SUV just to see what happens, if there may be a surprise. I've linked to transomdotorg/2005/transom-studio-mic-shootout/ before. While they also tested condensers, I found the inclusion of SM57/58 interesting. A SM57 thrown in just to see how it stacked up against the 'budget' (speaking in very relative terms here) microphones would have been very interesting.
Sennheiser MD441u would have also be an interesting, super expensive option to compare others to (if not strictly a broadcast option). I think MD421 is a more traditional option and arguably actually fits into the criteria of this comparison. Sennheiser didn't get any representation in this comparison, which I think is unfortunate as they have some good mics with which to compare.
Seeing the Podmic fare better than similarly priced or even broadcast options costing twice as much was a source of reprieve or relief for that option. Rode Proadcaster was somewhat, perhaps marginally better, but was it for-the-price-of-two better? Of course I still wonder how for a $100-to-$100 comparison it would have fared against the Shure brothers.
Great comment and read. The reason I didn’t include the other ones is because I had to put some cut off or limit to the mics so I opted to just do mics marketed as broadcast dynamics.
What. A. Video! Thank you for the content! Before I consider a mic, I always come to you first. You seem to always have a review. This was a good one!
You have the best reviews. Can't imagine how much editing this took but it is so so so helpful!
Thanks for your feedback

Putting in the work!
Got the Procaster just over a month ago. I could not justify the price jump to the Aston or SM7B compared to how liittle a difference in quality I heard, and it was the right choice. I love this thing. Glad to see it do well here too :)
One thing I really noticed about the Rode Procaster compared to most of the other mics (in particular every mic at a lower price point) is that the keyboard background noise in the sound tests for the Procaster is nearly non-existent and won't have annoying background noise leaking into the audio. So people who use their keyboard/mouse during podcasts, Dungeons & Dragons sessions, or gaming videos will definitely love having a mic like that at the price point and for the smooth sound quality. Plus Rode always has good build quality for their microphones from what I've seen, so their mics are a good choice.
This is an absolute treasure of information in a video. Really grateful for this gem!
Your videos are SO detailed it almost becomes ridiculous. The amount of work you put into them is insane, and trust me a lot of us appreciate that.
This must be your most thorough video to date, and I simply can't believe anyone would ever complain!
(PS: I convinced a couple of friends to buy the NT2A (based off that mic's review you did) , and neither is disappointed.)
Keep them coming Bandrew! 🤘
Now, this is the real podcast :)
For the spoken words category, listening on your m4a, I think I preferred the SM7b. I usually have a slight preference for the RE20 on male voices, but you're a bit high pitched and I like the body the 7b adds. But I know you like some trebles around, so I understand your choice.
As for best value, for once we have better prices here in France. The Procaster is at 160€ on Amazon, whereas the Podmic is at 110€. Worth the extra 50€ in my opinion.
You made a HUGE video that deserve the most thankful thumbs up !!!
Great help and great job.
Thank you so much.
Thanks so much. Your comparison was very useful for choosing the right podcast and youtube mic for me.
While listening to your various (and funny) patterns I pinned down the name of my favorites and before listening to your conclusions the first 2 on my list were the shure sm7b and the rode podmic.
I was very surprised and happy to find out that it was your own conclusions!
Thanks again! Ciao.

I’ve been watching high-end podcast mic videos for about a year…and this video is by far the most informative that I’ve come across. I’m sure it was tedious to produce…but man that extraordinary effort yielded a very valuable video. Would love to see an update with any new worthy contenders that might’ve emerged since this video was made a couple of years ago.

Finally! A completely non-biased, well executed review of all of the top broadcast mic contenders! Love the channel man! Keep pumping out content!
THX bro!!!, what a work!!
My favorites, even before the video was
1.- EV RE20
2.- SM7b
3.- Rode Podmic
IMO it really seems like the EV RE320 is one of the best mics on the list value-wise. For the amount you spend you get something that really does approach the sound of a sm7b or an RE20 and for a price that competes with the Rodes and other cheaper mics. Thanks for the shootout, super helpful video for me as I'm trying to decide on the best low-cost home studio mic.
Great job reviewing all of them! Thank you
I was feeling pretty good about my EV RE320 as it takes in the top 5 in most categories. It would be interesting to see each mics overall ranking average.
That’s how I got the overall mic winner. I took the rankings of each mic in every category, summed them, and then sorted in ascending order. RE320 got #3 in the all rounder category. You can see the full list at broadcast.mic.reviews
😊
Thanks! Makes perfect sense and interesting that the 320 beats its more expensive siblings.

I know it's a bit old but this info is still relative. Plus, it's damn cool to hear and see the variations and differences between mics and within mics. All those little captions randomly throughout the video were funny too Haha like he got his hair cut lol

Stay this awesome Bandrew =)
Great review and wow, the work that had to go into this!! I am seriously considering that procaster now. Of course, you already made me by an NT1 last year, which I am using to make real spendable cash so thanks for that! Side notes, the Neumann falls flat for me, overpriced by about 500 dollars. Also, I think that maybe that MXL mic, at 130 bucks, is about 120 bucks overpriced.
That's AMAZING that you're making money with the NT1. Congratulations! The Neumann is definitely a very different sound to the others. I'm finding a lot of Neumann's mic are a bit more mid forward than their competition.
Best and most honest mic review I've ever seen. Helped me narrow down my choices.
seeing this video and realizing how much time and effort has gone into the making of this video and also having watched a couple of your video's and podcasts, I knew you deserve more likes and subscribers!

SM7B for me with the cloud lifter
My ears lean towards the rode, the Audio technica, the sm7b, and the electro voices
which rode?
I didn't know I needed this video. Amazing work
You are a straight-up legend for this. Super thorough, and excellent review. High-quality content and very helpful to anyone pro or amateur in the field.
Rode Podmic and Shure SM7b sound the best in this video. For the price to output the Rode seems to be the by far best value. The Shure seems to have just a bit better quality but it's a pretty big price difference making the Rode Podmic a pretty good value. Great video.
I have to say, RE320 sounds just like Rode Procaster, but the latter is cheaper?
More top end from the re320, better at plosive rejection too. Have a listen through some headphones.
Awesome video! Thanks for taking out the time & money 💰 😅 to give honest & thorough reviews about all the mics presented. The Shure SM7B & Rode mics are a beast! You’re a great host, gr8 vid too :-).
Great video. I ended up purchasing a Rode Procaster because of one of your other videos. I have been VERY happy with it and watching this, still very happy.
Since i own one, the PodMic is my favourite!!
The budget winner is obviously the Q2U 😂
He didn't include it because he knew he would beat SM7B just because the price difference is so huge there is no legible excuse to spend 400usd extra for it XD
Best video ever. I hope you can make a v2, including some the MV7, some SE mics, the logi one and others. This is by far the best video for this purpose and all your other videos are already great.
Thanks so much for the kind words. I do plan to eventually make another one of these, but I think I'd need to break it out by budget because so many $100 "broadcast" dynamic mics have been released recently.
I wish you would have posted this video 4 years ago! Great work. Worth the time!
Sounds like the Podmic is a clear winner for those starting out. BTW, being an idiot doesn't mean this wasn't a great video. Now either bring me pizza pronto or send me all those mics because...REASONS!
Usually I watch Russian ASMR girls videos but tonight you’ll do Bandrew 🤣
Slumming it tonight. =) We welcome you to the slum.
Thank you sir for the effort you've put into this! That's a great mic shootout!
That is an A+ for efforts for “shure” Thank You, for doing this.!
I feel like the look on your face during the keyboard test is the same one you have at work... 😒
You’re not wrong. Haha!
You may as well have been holding puppies. I see mic's and I click.
I had to subscribe just for the simple fact all the time you put into this single video. WOW you're the best man. Keep up the hard work and you're gonna go from 200k to 2 million subscribers
Thanks for a great review! I use the SM7b for radio broadcasts from my home studio and it is just a pleasure to work with. Especially combined with the dbx 286s-preamp/processor.
Yes, that's a really nice combination. Lots of clean gain from the dbx286s, plus all those effects to enhance the sound, is superb for live applications. It's good value, not much more than a cloudlifter but loads of features.
I seem to remember the cloudlifter is a bit better in terms of self noise, but the dbx is well worth a look. It goes very nicely with the Rode Procaster too - just a tip for anyone who needs nearly the same quality for half the price.
