I have to stress to anyone reading this: the "explore and loot everything" tip is KEY in this game. The King gives you 50 gold to start with. That's not enough to buy even the most basic weapon. I lot of people see this and go "whelp, time to grind for an hour, this game sucks." But no! You can find up to *150* more gold just by looting Aliahan and the Castle. Plus you'll be getting medical herbs, Mini medals, and even basic gear items like helms and pot lids and very basic weapons. By the time you're done looting, you'll be up to 200 gold PLUS you'll need to buy fewer things because you found gear for free while... uh... scavenging. Same goes for those Sparkly Spots on the world map. Gear. Seeds. Money. Herbs. You'll get all those from each spot, plus every Secret Area you find will ALSO have hidden valuables in it (usually in pots or barrels or bags hanging on tree trunks). You'll *also* be organically fighting stuff while hunting for Secret/Sparkly spots, which is grinding but *far more engaging* since you're *not* just walking in circles around town. Regarding Metal enemies, they are completely and utterly immune to every single magic spell in the entire game, even their own. You can NOT hit them with ANY spell. You can't debuff any of their stats. You can't damage them with any elemental attack spell. You cannot insta-kill them Whack. Nothing. Now Abilities, on the other hand, work just fine. Like you said, any ability that has a chance to cause Instant Death will work, and anything that scores a Critical Hit is also a guaranteed kill since they only have 3-5 health and Crits do far more damage than that no matter what. Weapons that can hit more than one target (whips, boomerangs) CAN do 1 damage to more than one Metal foe at once, but the chance to do so is only about 25-33% per enemy attacked. Early on, try insta-kill abilities; later on you can use stuff like Sword Dance and Multi-fist and Falcon Slash and Hypnowhip all at once to try and kill entire groups. Speaking of Hypnowhip, basic Metal Slimes can be afflicted with Confuse using this ability, which not only prevents them from running away, but also means they'll sometimes attack another Metal monster for 1 damage. You cannot, sadly, confuse Liquid Metal Slimes in this same way. Lastly, you can get a Sage without the Words of Wisdom item (which is used up when you make a Sage!), but it requires leveling up a mostly-worthless Gadabout to Level 20 or higher. This is typically something you're only going to do later in the game when you can use your other party members to carry the dead weight. Basically, you make a new Gadabout, do some Metal Slime hunting with the Hero and 2 higher-level characters and the new Gadabout, then promote them Sage once they're Level 20 (although waiting until 30 gets you a couple of useful Abilities). You can now use your shiny new, no-item-needed Sage to replace your old Priest or Mage (or maybe both).
You can find more than 20 prayer rings in the game. Just be sure to go to secret spots and pick up sparkling spots on world map. You get plenty of them. Also, when you get the MOD ROD item, go to Fairy Village. You can turn into a slime with the MOD ROD and use the item shop there. You can buy Sage's Elixer's which restore 80 or more MP. They sell for 40,000 gold coins. However, Prayer Rings can also be bought there. They are MUCH cheaper. You also get a second MOD ROD from the monster arena. It's the Rank 10 or 11 prize. Well, one of the Prizes anyway. Just an extra tip.
@@danielgaines9935 I just wanted to point it out because you can do 8/9 and get the Mod Rod back before fighting Zoma, but if it were 10/11 that means you'd have to be in the post-game to get it.
@Darkkfated fair point. And you are correct. I had them mixed up. But either way, using the item shop in Fairy Village is very useful for items to replenish MP.
I added a Merchant and a monster wrangler along with the thief just for a bit more gold and the chance to steal items. Extra items can be sold especially if they steal copper swords or leather armor. I would also suggest if you're having a bit of trouble with anything switch to Drakey Quest (Easy difficulty) the game won't let you die, you'll get knocked down to 1hp but never die, this includes boss fights. Be on the lookout for monsters to send to Monty, some of them you'll need a Monster Wrangler, if you see one that runs when you approach teleport to Pattys place either make a MW or pick up one you made earlier, and while there heal at home for free and turn in any mini medals, monster battles are free money since you don't have to heal your monsters. Before doing any dungeons just enter and port back to town to stock up on items, heal and save the game, you can port back to where you were.
My tip is this. Have a Gababout so you can get two Sages later in game. Dont do what I did and have a mage and priest and then mirror them later. If you want to collect monsters have a third until you get that one ability that muffles foot steps. Monster Wrangler is goated. Oh and Vamp personality is also goated for most spell based classes
Pretty good starting party advice. However I'd argue that you really don't need a Priest or a Mage to start off with, but may instead want to consider a Monster Wrangler & Merchant instead. I say this cus the Monster Wrangler has a couple Heal spells that will more than suffice for Healing. The only thing you'll be lacking from the Priest is the Sap spell for Bosses, which isnt that big a deal up til you get to where you can change classes. MW is also able to equip Whips & Boomerangs, which should make it significantly more effective in battle. Once you get to Alltrades Abbey, THEN is when you'll want to turn the MW into a Sage w the book you find in the nearby tower. One dedicated Magic user is PLENTY in this game now that other classes have abilities of their own. As for the Merchant, it has some ESSENTIAL skills that you may as well get out of the way early on, thus making it a starting class is a nice choice. You'll be changing it as soon as you hit Level 20 anyway. It also can equip Boomerangs and it's strength stat isn't bad, so it too should help make short work of enemy mobs up til you're able to class change.. I'll admit though that Thief, Priest & Mage were my exact starting party preference every time I played the old versions of DQ3! However this game changes things up in a big way, so the ideal party has thus changed.
Id actually say, Hold off on switching the MW at all, let alone to sage. MW's skills up until level 50 i think are insanely viable, MW is insanely OP. I'd actually recommend upgrading the merchant to sage at level 24 after acquiring helichopter. Got myself a lvl 40 wrangler, a merchant sage, and a priest warrior. I'd say my party is mid game and their absolutely destroying everything.

Second Mod Rod is from winning the Level 8 Arena, so it's not too tough to get and can be done before the post-game.
@Darkkfated my bad. I knew it was the prize for one of them lol.

So what should ones starting team be to get the 2 sages and monster wrangler?
One of my first RPGs back in the day. Excited for this, but not $60 excited
def worth it
I love the game so far but I agree. Could have been at least 50. If it were a trilogy sure. I’d pay 60
