  • On this episode of The Downshift, we take a look back at one of the most interesting chapters in automotive history: the birth and death of the DeLorean Motor Company. When John DeLorean left GM to start his own line of eponymous cars no one had any idea the real-life Hollywood story that would play out over the upcoming years to turn the DeLorean DMC-12 into the icon of a generation!

    I cried when watching this... despite being a chevy fan, imagine what john delorean could have done now! I heard that he had plans for an engine that got 100 mpg... back in 1981. DeLorean. a classic that will never diminish.

    • @durkadika7464
      @durkadika7464 10 лет назад +1

      you can get 100mpgs out of a lot of engines, its when you bolt them to a big heavy piece of steel like a delorean that they start to get 18mpgs

    I am a car lover, nerd, geek, enthusiast, whatever, and I cry about sad car stories of great company's failing from way back then and such great cars that a pretty much missed or are too rare to live. But the DeLorean story, much more sad then anything. Why? I don't know...Such a fantastic car and such a horrible story on how the company never took off.

    Such a crazy story of success, defeat, and scandals that I am surprised a blockbuster hit has yet to be done following the story of John DeLorean.

  • @Tclans
    @Tclans 10 лет назад +1

    I remember the first time i stood next to a Delorean. I remember the cold comming from the stainless steel when i hovered my hand over it. Opening the door with a soft *thump* sound. Then the door rised allmost noiseless. Sitting in it gave me the idea of a warm and embracing hug. Pretty mesmerizing. I occasionally drive a couple miles extra when im on my way home to a spot where there is one.

  • @zeykshade
    @zeykshade 10 лет назад +40

    Moral of this story: If the Government wants to make an example of you, they can and will.
    The GCHQ and NSA documents regarding Online Covert Action are telling.

    • @MrKeyboardCommando
      @MrKeyboardCommando 10 лет назад

      Actually, the moral of the story is don't try selling cocaine to undercover Feds. Oh, and don't make a car nobody wants.

    • @zeykshade
      @zeykshade 10 лет назад +12

      MrKeyboardCommando Except when he realized it was a drug deal, he tried to back out and the undercover feds threatened to chop his daughter's head off and send it to him in a grocery bag.
      Clear entrapment. If he had actually trafficked the narcotics, he'd have been convicted of it. They dropped all of the charges against JZ DeLorean. This was all political. Money buys influence. Big money (GM/Ford) buy's policy.

    • @MrKeyboardCommando
      @MrKeyboardCommando 10 лет назад

      Zeyk Shade Well, that's certainly an interesting story you've got there, and no mistake. Oh, by the way, he knew he was selling cocaine, what he didn't know was he was selling it to undercover Feds. Only small differences I'll admit, but, nonetheless, worth mentioning.

    • @zeykshade
      @zeykshade 10 лет назад +7

      Yeah, they had such a solid case they dropped all drug charges and he never spent a day in jail...
      "All he ever spent behind bars was 10 days while he raised bail after his arrest in Los Angeles in 1982 on charges of smuggling cocaine worth $24m. His acquittal two years later, due to FBI entrapment, was one of several cases in which he eluded criminal conviction."
      You see that? Entrapment. Acquitted.

    • @MrKeyboardCommando
      @MrKeyboardCommando 10 лет назад

      Zeyk Shade It is common knowledge DeLorean successfully defended himself, proving entrapment by the Feds. However, it is proven fact he knew he was selling cocaine, but didn't know it was to undercover Feds.

    So sad.. One day I WILL own one of these. last I checked (about 6 yearas ago) you could find them on ebay motors used with less than 50k on them for around $20,000. Bet it'll keep going up as time goes on and original run DMC's become rarer and rarer...

  • @Jebbby
    @Jebbby 10 лет назад +2

    Dont get me wrong, I love the DeLorean and one of my life goals is to own one some day, but I have to agree with these guys. If DeLorean didnt go under we might not appreciate the DeLorean as much as we do now. If it kept going and kept evovling it might have made things worse. But I do wonder what a DeLorean would look like in the 90's and 00's...

    So with all those millions of car parts are there "brand new" Deloreans being pieced together and sold as new cars to this day? Id also like to see Pontiac's old facility

    • @shraka
      @shraka 10 лет назад +2

      They probably don't have some major components - like the Chassis. It's great news for someone who owns one though. Getting parts for old cars can sometimes be a nightmare.

    • @gearheadred
      @gearheadred 10 лет назад

      ***** He said in the video that they have 80% of the original parts to build about 2000 DeLoreans, and that they have a supplier network to produce the rest of the parts. But if all of the chassis were built back in the 80's and were assigned VIN plates at that time, then they cannot be sold as new cars. They can assemble the cars and sell them as "1982 DeLorean DMC-12s" since that was when the last time any chassis were built.

    • @Crimsonedge1
      @Crimsonedge1 10 лет назад

      Yes, the cars are in a very slow and limited production. As the majority of components are stainless steel and are still unused and in packaging, you're essentially getting a brand new car when you purchase one.
      "Texas entrepreneur Stephen Wynne started a separate company in 1995 using the "DeLorean Motor Company" name and shortly thereafter acquired the trademark on the stylized "DMC" logo as well as the remaining parts inventory of the original DeLorean Motor Company. The company, at its suburban Humble, Texas location, completes newly assembled cars from new old stock (NOS) parts, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and reproduction parts on a "made to order" basis using existing Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plates" - Wiki

    • @shraka
      @shraka 10 лет назад

      Forehead Jones I think by "80% of the parts" he means he could build 2000 Delorians, if he had the spare 20%. Otherwise he probably would have done that already, and be richer than he already is.
      Well... Perhaps, spare parts are expensive.

    • @gearheadred
      @gearheadred 10 лет назад

      ***** Did you watch the video? He said that they have a network of manufacturers that can produce the remaining parts. Perhaps the reason that they are building the cars so slowly is that nobody wants to buy the pieces of shit.

    As iconic for the early 80s this car was, it never was particular fast or anything sporty - imo mostly because it's simply to heavy (Steel frame vs Aluminium one on the Lotus it was based on) respectively underpowered. But as far as I remember wasn't there a place where you could by technically improved DMCs documented on the /drive network?
