- On this episode of The Downshift, we take a look back at one of the most interesting chapters in automotive history: the birth and death of the DeLorean Motor Company. When John DeLorean left GM to start his own line of eponymous cars no one had any idea the real-life Hollywood story that would play out over the upcoming years to turn the DeLorean DMC-12 into the icon of a generation!

Great video of a truly iconic car!
That's a really great, sad story. Somebody should make a movie out of it.
I cried when watching this... despite being a chevy fan, imagine what john delorean could have done now! I heard that he had plans for an engine that got 100 mpg... back in 1981. DeLorean. a classic that will never diminish.
you can get 100mpgs out of a lot of engines, its when you bolt them to a big heavy piece of steel like a delorean that they start to get 18mpgs

very interesting & sad story
*****
Yet interesting enough for you to watch and then comment.
An icon, immortalised.
BTTF Forever.
I am a car lover, nerd, geek, enthusiast, whatever, and I cry about sad car stories of great company's failing from way back then and such great cars that a pretty much missed or are too rare to live. But the DeLorean story, much more sad then anything. Why? I don't know...Such a fantastic car and such a horrible story on how the company never took off.
Marty we have to go back in time to save the DeLorean!
This car is a legend. I wish i could have one.
Delorean........oh sweet Delorean
Opportunity missed sadly.But, it's still a DeLorean; it'll will last forever :-)
Wait a minute ... wait a minute, Doc ... are you telling me you built a TIME machine ... out of a DELOREAN?
And yet another reason to hate the government! Great video and great car!
Such a crazy story of success, defeat, and scandals that I am surprised a blockbuster hit has yet to be done following the story of John DeLorean.
I remember the first time i stood next to a Delorean. I remember the cold comming from the stainless steel when i hovered my hand over it. Opening the door with a soft *thump* sound. Then the door rised allmost noiseless. Sitting in it gave me the idea of a warm and embracing hug. Pretty mesmerizing. I occasionally drive a couple miles extra when im on my way home to a spot where there is one.
Moral of this story: If the Government wants to make an example of you, they can and will.
The GCHQ and NSA documents regarding Online Covert Action are telling.
Actually, the moral of the story is don't try selling cocaine to undercover Feds. Oh, and don't make a car nobody wants.
MrKeyboardCommando Except when he realized it was a drug deal, he tried to back out and the undercover feds threatened to chop his daughter's head off and send it to him in a grocery bag.
Clear entrapment. If he had actually trafficked the narcotics, he'd have been convicted of it. They dropped all of the charges against JZ DeLorean. This was all political. Money buys influence. Big money (GM/Ford) buy's policy.
Zeyk Shade Well, that's certainly an interesting story you've got there, and no mistake. Oh, by the way, he knew he was selling cocaine, what he didn't know was he was selling it to undercover Feds. Only small differences I'll admit, but, nonetheless, worth mentioning.
Yeah, they had such a solid case they dropped all drug charges and he never spent a day in jail...
"All he ever spent behind bars was 10 days while he raised bail after his arrest in Los Angeles in 1982 on charges of smuggling cocaine worth $24m. His acquittal two years later, due to FBI entrapment, was one of several cases in which he eluded criminal conviction."
You see that? Entrapment. Acquitted.
Zeyk Shade It is common knowledge DeLorean successfully defended himself, proving entrapment by the Feds. However, it is proven fact he knew he was selling cocaine, but didn't know it was to undercover Feds.
This story is extremely sad. I wonder if the company would've truely still been around and able to compete with the Big 3 if this did not occur.
It is truly amazing to hear this from people who were around when this scandal happened. Every car company has its stories, DeLorean will forever be a part of history.
Great commentary. Thank you for this. DeLorean lives on!
i always said he got set up by GMC...
I just love DeLoreans. Always have, always will.
That was a great story. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!
I'm really glad this was made and done so well.
I hated the misconception about John DeLorean in the automotive world.
Wow, what a great history. Had no idea about the story behind this classic car. To think, we came so close to still be driving DeLorean cars.
Nice little documentary, impressive production quality for a Motor Trend video. It does a nice job of relating DeLorean's place in history, not only the car and company.
It would be soo cool, if somone would make a delorean remodel. So when I look at it it looks like the Delorean, it feels liek Delorean, but it is on the same level as cars today.
Thanks for the Awesome flashback. I'm glad this oldschool futuristic car is still around today. Please excuse me, I have to go watch "Back to the Future"
Asplenia.
Apparently our Mr DeLorean was an expert wangler too, apparently he could expertly forge Colin Chapman's signature which may or may not have illicited funds to keep the project afloat a little longer.
Great job with the video and the background story. Will share this to help to dispell the misconceptions about the car, the company and the man.
It makes me so happy that there are all these parts and support for the DeLorean, and yet so sad about the way it turned out for thr company. We'd be living in a much different world if they had survived.
My favorite car of all time.
Great car, looks incredibly cool
that's one hell of a story!!
Great video!I really need to start driving mine.
Wow, what a story. I really enjoyed it
John Delorean had a vision,it's tragic how his dream and vision were shattered, but his cars live on in the hands of collectors.
Awesome story for a great car- thanks for sharing
Hey nice documentary!! Thanks for sharing this!! :)
The Mystique and history of the DeLorean really makes them such a great car. I'm not i'd ever be a fan of them without seeing Back To The Future as a child though.
Very nice historic piece about a car that is ironically stuck in time. Nevermind the drivability, you'll miss the point of the film.
even now this car still looks good and I want one for my self
DeLorean is one of my car that i like it will be in my top ten cars
I saw the back to the future and i still want one of those cars
Always wanted a DMC-12, bought a Corrado VR6 as it reminds me of it.
It's good that john didn't go to jail, but he still got boned out of being a potential billionaire.
I think the Delorean could use a Vortec 292 V-8, I think that's the 4.8L, it should fit and then it would have some muscle backing it. It would become a force to recon with.
Really great video!
AWESOME CAR HISTORY OF THE DELOREAN , RESPECT TO THE MAKERS AND THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THIS VIDEO WELL DONE!! THE DELOREAN WILL LEAVE ITS LEGACY!!
Awesome video and story
So sad.. One day I WILL own one of these. last I checked (about 6 yearas ago) you could find them on ebay motors used with less than 50k on them for around $20,000. Bet it'll keep going up as time goes on and original run DMC's become rarer and rarer...
Dont get me wrong, I love the DeLorean and one of my life goals is to own one some day, but I have to agree with these guys. If DeLorean didnt go under we might not appreciate the DeLorean as much as we do now. If it kept going and kept evovling it might have made things worse. But I do wonder what a DeLorean would look like in the 90's and 00's...
If they have all those parts, why don't they make more...this is a car that never got its chance to truly shine, But yet it still made a big impact. such a beautiful car...
The Delorean I agree with them remains timeless ! :)
It's kind of nice ! Stainless steel ! :)
Yes Kimberly it certainly can last ! :)
It is my dream to own a DeLorean DMC-12.
This gave me chills.
Owning a DeLorean is a unique experience from the moment you get in to the moment it won't start.
We need more of the DMC in our lives someone needs to start making these cars but with a better engine a power train, such an iconic car and i was born in the early 90's and i want one
Best video ever!!!
I think that he is so interesting. He on only lived a few towns over from me there are 4 de loreans that I have seen and three of them ran
GREAT video!
This is really cool, I luv this car and I didn't know any of that information.
long live the delorean.... now i want one...
I still want one,... always have.
I walked to Treadwell Ford in Mobile, Alabama as a teenager and saw these cars new in the showroom. They even had one painted red.
So with all those millions of car parts are there "brand new" Deloreans being pieced together and sold as new cars to this day? Id also like to see Pontiac's old facility
They probably don't have some major components - like the Chassis. It's great news for someone who owns one though. Getting parts for old cars can sometimes be a nightmare.
***** He said in the video that they have 80% of the original parts to build about 2000 DeLoreans, and that they have a supplier network to produce the rest of the parts. But if all of the chassis were built back in the 80's and were assigned VIN plates at that time, then they cannot be sold as new cars. They can assemble the cars and sell them as "1982 DeLorean DMC-12s" since that was when the last time any chassis were built.
Yes, the cars are in a very slow and limited production. As the majority of components are stainless steel and are still unused and in packaging, you're essentially getting a brand new car when you purchase one.
"Texas entrepreneur Stephen Wynne started a separate company in 1995 using the "DeLorean Motor Company" name and shortly thereafter acquired the trademark on the stylized "DMC" logo as well as the remaining parts inventory of the original DeLorean Motor Company. The company, at its suburban Humble, Texas location, completes newly assembled cars from new old stock (NOS) parts, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and reproduction parts on a "made to order" basis using existing Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plates" - Wiki
Forehead Jones I think by "80% of the parts" he means he could build 2000 Delorians, if he had the spare 20%. Otherwise he probably would have done that already, and be richer than he already is.
Well... Perhaps, spare parts are expensive.
***** Did you watch the video? He said that they have a network of manufacturers that can produce the remaining parts. Perhaps the reason that they are building the cars so slowly is that nobody wants to buy the pieces of shit.
is this the best car to drive? Proly not. But dammit for its time it was super original and down right cool. A damn legend
If anyone is interested in Deloreans check out Matt Farah's
Finally a video im interested in and its way too short
this made me want to cry anyone else?
What a interesting story!!!!!!!
I remember when the DeLorean came out. Las Vegas had several at the hotels giving them away as prizes.. Drawing huge crowds....Everyone wanting one and they were selling over window sticker price. Sadly the DeLorean had horrible engines and many buyers had trouble keeping them on the road. Still a great car in history.
i walked around the delorean test track last year.
sad to see it never took off
muy bueno,me gusta D.M.C lo maximo quiero uno de ellos.
Wow Motortrend has really gone down hill.
How? You didn't enjoy that?
Its a darn shame, That was honestly a great car!
i will eventually get one of these vehicles in my lifetime
The big 3 saw a threat pulled strings and eliminated it...
iconic car
Thats just awesome.
When I was a kid i saw the delorean and feel in love with it my landlord knew john delorean to hear the story's i herd is all but boring. Long live delorean
Great Car Great Story!
Great video... But the music is to loud! I had a hard time getting all the dialoge with the music track so loud!
Sad story. I love that car.
Doc is alive!!!
Didn't know they had other colors intended for the DeLorean. I would have loved to have seen what the company would be like, if they survived the economic meltdown of their time.
Good old Johnny.Z
Hmm, set up? Probably had the "big three" nervous just like Preston Tucker.
The Official Walter Mitty car !
Parece que foi construído para o filme tanto que não envelheceu com passar dos anos!
1st & BIG like from iraq
It would be nice to never worry about rust or a paint job.
I'd love to get a DeLorean In the next few years! R
Makes me wonder if someone from the big 3 saw this up start company as a threat, and got someone in the federal government to entrap him. I mean come on, they said they'd cut off his daughters head. For an undercover sting that's going way to far.
My dream Car!....this and Biff' Tannen's 46 Ford super de luxe Convertible!
The prices just got 3.000$ higher because all these Delorean Videos on YT lately...thanks.. i wanted to buy one :(
I would buy one
I have an idea, put an LS motor in it
great video
Nice
As iconic for the early 80s this car was, it never was particular fast or anything sporty - imo mostly because it's simply to heavy (Steel frame vs Aluminium one on the Lotus it was based on) respectively underpowered. But as far as I remember wasn't there a place where you could by technically improved DMCs documented on the /drive network?
It's either The Smoking Tire or /Drive. Matt, one of the hosts owns a Delorean and does a video of this shop. His was restored there.
Pretty sad story actually. I guess we'll never really know the truth. It's a bit of a tragedy.
