Actually JZD was a engineer...he went against the big brass orders against putting a big engine in a light body...so to by-pass the big brass.. the 1964 GTO was put out just as a OPTION onto the ALREADY designed Pontiac Tempest/Lemans mid size car...it was not until 1966 that the GTO became it's own...and not a option on the Pontiac Tempest...since the orders for the GTO option were so great the big brass relented....
The whole delorean story is truly fascinating. I was a child when this car was produced. Even tho it was rubbish underneath it was a cool looking car nonetheless. Back to the future truly made this car iconic though.
That's like before the 60's where there were almost zero regulations with automobiles. As time progressed new emission laws started to popup, and a lot of engines in this time frame were heavily restricted to meet those standards. Took a bit to create engines that made decent performance at these standards.
I think it would end up like other 'specialty' cars and would be VERY surprised if it had less than a 6 figure price. No idea how much those parts would be to build one yourself, but since there are a finite amount of parts left, they can't be cheap! They were supposed to release this in 2017 but the national highway traffic safety committee block them. Early 2019 they supposed to come out with a revised version regarding the new laws the new one should have 300 to 400 horsepower and cost about $100,000

DMC Houston's website goes in to further detail. It looks like it was regulation rather than lack of parts or interest that stopped new production. The EPA requires newly manufactured cars to meet the emissions standards in effect when the car was built, regardless of the age of the design. This means that a new DeLorean must meet 21st century emissions standards. The junky engine the DeLorean originally came with and DMC has on hand does not meet current regulations. As of 2017 DMC was trying to source new engines that would pass muster.

I found jokes written in caulk by the Irish factory workers on the sheetmetal underneath the plastic vent just behind the driver's door on my 1981 DeLorean. Mostly comments from them about "Detroit Spinners" and other Anti-American car comments. There's also writing from the factory workers inside the roof of the doors hidden by the headliners. I left them there. You can't see them with the trim in place. It's their little secret that I found in 1996 when I bought the car. I still own it today.
+Stanley Williams Not much of an argument there. Besides, apart from Back to the Future, the main thing DeLoreans were known for were faulty door hinges and anemic performance. My father almost bought a DeLorean at one point. He decided against it after a test drive. The DMC12 is a below-average car, but it's not terrible. It just needs work... a lot of work.
He said that in the interview himself, it would be forgotten just like the Bricklin. The only thing that made it memorable was the connection to the movie.
Warner Bauer Are you serious. Delorean's performance was even a contender to the Pantera's noise, performance and presence. Where the Delorean does shine is in showmanship. It does have presence on the road.
If I had one of these my next move would definitely be a retro fit. Redesign the doors, engine braking system and interior...On the outside it would look like the original but underneath the veneer it would be very modern - the lights would be LED. In my opinion a retro fit like this is true to film that inspired so many people's nostalgia for the car. You may not be able to add a 'Mr Fusion' but you could certainly had a hydrogen or electric engine today.
You should sell them as kit cars, offer up different engine packages other than the lump it came out of the factory with , hell id prob buy one out of nostalgia reasons they still look great
They occasionally pop up on “reality” shows claiming they will do just that. I saw one where they were going to sell electric Deloreans and one where a custom shop helped them ‘redesign’ a second gen they were going to produce. I think it’s more about getting free press for their NOS part sales. I’m guessing they ran the numbers and the kit car model is just not as profitable
I live about 3 miles from an authentic conversion Time Machine Delorean. The first time I saw it behind me in traffic I went bananas. Flux capacitor fluxxing, it was so rad!
I always moved the look and style of the DeLorean way before the movie. One of the things I liked was the stainless steel body. Another was the gull wing doors. I would like to own one someday
Man I used to pass by this place everyday on the southwest side of town. They would have a bunch of Deloreans parked outside, all in pristine condition.😊
PK_Haseo Warning about buying one... With a DeLorean you get EXACTLY what you pay for. You can find them all day long on eBay for about 40K... yeah... And you'll get a 40K DeLorean too. Advice: Don't buy a 40K DeLorean unless you can afford to invest another 40K.
bendsomemetal Ford then scoop it up and resell it. Because if it is what you say it is, it's worth 50. ...or it may be worth 28, and there may be things he's not telling you about.
A smart enterprising entrepreneur would make a brand similar to these with updates, call it by another name, keep the gull wing doors and sell it at an affordable price and watch his company growing phenomenally.
We can rebuild her faster stronger better... she has been in cryostasis... it is time... (dramatic music) with the power of the internet, we can do it! [I am serious]
actually, it was "cannibalized" with parts from Peugeot, Volvo AND Renault engines. I've heard of owners saying they needed three separate Chilton's manuals for long-term maintenance! It's so troublesome that a few have yanked it and put in a V6 or in some rare cases, a small block V8!
The engine is called the PRV V6. Which stands for 'Peugeot / Renault / Volvo'. It was a joint project between all three car companies, and was first used by all three brands in various models from '75 or '76 onward. The PRV V6 has also been used in lots of other cars, mainly sports coupes, (inlcuding the DeLorean, of course) by other much smaller brands over the decades. Sometimes with a turbo, sometimes even with a twin turbo, (which Renault did on its own Renault 25 Biturbo and then the later Renault Safrane Biturbo in the '90s). While one of the more memorable sports coupes/brands that's used it was the Alpine brand rear-engined fibreglass-bodied coupes, (sometimes referred to as the 'Renault Alpine'. Arguably the closest French equivalent to a Lotus but with the engine layout of a Porsche 911) which finally got the engine as standard from about '84 through to the mid '90s, with the option of turbo. *[Side-note: after about a 20 year absence, Alpine has been recently revived as a brand - but has changed to a mid-engined layout, no more 'plus 2' rear seats, more compact size, and a smaller but boosted engine. Aimed to compete with the Porsche Cayman, Alfa Romeo 4C, Lotus Elise, etc). While due to Peugeot buying out Citroen in around '76, Citroen also got the PRV V6, eventually, in the top spec models of it's upper size cars, (starting with the XM from '89, then the Xantia, C5, C6, etc). The DeLorean really needed a turbo, (or supercharger) as either standard or option right from the start. Due in no small part to its heavy stainless steel body, (but at least that keeps the body panels rust-free!!!). It's crazy they don't now offer the option of an upgraded DeLorean, (as suggested above) with the performance it should have to go with the looks, rather than just selling it 'as it was' when new way back in the early '80s.
From Leo: Factory Trained Volvo Technician; that was the worst engine Volvo ever offered. I am sure that adding a turbo would make it even less reliable. Uneven firing, noisey, 170 cubic inches of leaks, bad cams, blown head gaskets and bad timing chains held together by tiny corroded bolts. . Maybe ok for a collector, or a trailer queen, not something you would want to take on Holiday.
Should source aluminum LS engines to put in these things; not like a Vette version, but more middle of the road V8; put a reasonable transmission/gearbox and make brake/suspension adjustments as necessary and those things would be freaking awesome. 88 mph would then be well within reach!
The old plant in Northern Ireland where they were made is only two miles from me now. In fact, I loojed after one of the guys DMC brought in to put the crap stuff right. Great stories!
You can see another reason why the company failed. Ordering for just in time assembly process has always been more cost effective. All that cash was setting in excess car parts... not working in R & D, not working in advertising, not working toward payroll.
I saw a delorian @ 3 am in LA @ a gasstation. Unlocked and had everything on it from Back to the Future. I was the only one there when i walked up to it and the gas station was closed. I'll never forget that!
Would be nice if they (GMC? If they still own the rights to the design) redesigned the engine and other parts to make them good cars manufactured at a reasonable price whilst still maintaining the original aesthetic. Basically, fix the internal problems and leave the external features alone. Then they could sell them for a reasonable price in the mass market.
Yeah it's as simple as spending hundreds of millions on R&D and meeting the safety requirements of the current day. Want to become a millionare? Give thesoddinggamer 200million.
I bought a new one when they went bankrupt. I believe I paid $18k for it. Many issues with the car: 1) it was a dog, no power at all 2) no inside ventilation. Even on a cold day, you had to have the little window down with the air on 3) brakes did not work too well. But, it was cool to drive and folks loved it when you parked it.
It was garbage... I can't believe some people saw this thing in a bad movie and are making a big deal for this car. I drove one back in the 80s could give the keys back to the sales person fast enough.
+Yunaton F Langhirt a delorean will cost you around 20 25 thousand to 32 35 45 as well an even as low as 12 15 but i have never seen one for 110,000 like with all the back to the future time machine junk on it they sell for around 110,000 to 85
Well maybe a "second" hand delorean will cost about 20-50k but I seen the video on youtube on how someone bought a whole warehouse full of original/new delorean parts so the buyer tried to revive the delorean and was reportedly wanting 100k for each new delorean put together
they still have enough doors alone for 500 more cars before theyd have to make new ones seing as they make 30 odd cars a year at a gues thats over 15 years from now before theyd even have to build new doors, at a gues if they did keep building new cars and keep fixing old ones they would propobly use the stock in a little over 10 years. and like p12 said they have all the BP they need to build new ones.
They already offer one. But using Tesla's patents would put it on a universal plant forum and they won't have to reinvent the wheel. Almost plug and play. Good call out!
If they’re smart, they should make a carbon fibre alternative and power it with an electric motor, large battery pack and fast recharge system. Then it would truly be back-in-the-future.
I've always wanted one! When I was 4 years old, I went to visit my grandpa, who owned one. He let me sit in the driver's seat! Later, when I was 27, I found out that my grandpa left me that car in his will! My cousin was supposed to maintain it until I turned 21, and then give it to me, but the guy wrecked it and sold it for parts!

Pirate Labs it probably still can't go that fast
On the original engine, it struggles to hit 80 as it is. You need to replace it if you want performance.
Pirate Labs it's funny to read the replies to your comment. at least i didn't get the chance to write something like that first.😁
Speed = distance / time...
you know, that would be a really great way of appealing against a speeding ticket...
hahahaha
Man it'd be a blessing to have one of those in my garage.
delorean remember...your future is whatever you make it.. so make it a good one
You are out of time.
I'm a simple man I only want one thing from life
And this is it
Me too bro me too
Drove one it was so bad I couldn't get it back to the sales man fast enough
@@KeyoRacing if I ever get one, I'ma ls swap it
Nissan V6 or inline 6
Whatever at least not electric
Seriously though, if it wasnt for back to ro the future, this car would be just another car...
Just like the GTO, Firebird etc........
He said that in the interview himself, it would be forgotten just like the Bricklin. The only thing that made it memorable was the connection to the movie.
it already had a fairly large reception after its release, but even during the promotional material. BTTF boosted that reception
Wonder if it would have worked with an a.m.c pacer??
It's still very unique looking
For what it's worth, I always saw the De Lorean as the competitor to the De Tomaso Pantera. 'Back to the Future' was just a bonus.
Warner Bauer Are you serious. Delorean's performance was even a contender to the Pantera's noise, performance and presence.
Where the Delorean does shine is in showmanship. It does have presence on the road.
Both looked hood but only the pantera did what it was supposed to
If I had one of these my next move would definitely be a retro fit.
There are restomod DeLoreans on RUclips that are exactly what you described, and they're very cool.
I've loved the Delorean DMC-12 since 1981. One day....
I can't wait till I'm financially in a position to own a Delorean.
Would never work
Why did you molest the stock Wonderful body of that 1972 with the ridiculous engine and rip the hood off.
a true timeless car that would never rust that's the iconic delorean 👏👏🖒👌
Yes, it's timeless. You can actually
go Back to the Future with it.
I live about 3 miles from an authentic conversion Time Machine Delorean. The first time I saw it behind me in traffic I went bananas. Flux capacitor fluxxing, it was so rad!
Does it come with a Flux Capacitor?
Your comment needs more likes bro
One like from me😉
You are not very original. How old are you ?
35 years later it's still on back order.
Do you come with shutting up?
I always moved the look and style of the DeLorean way before the movie. One of the things I liked was the stainless steel body. Another was the gull wing doors. I would like to own one someday
My dream is to buy a DeLorean
Mine too
I know what you feel Brah...
Mine too,and imp it out so it looks like in the movies! :D
but then the film is gona be dead, but NOT IN MY HEART! :(
And covert it into the time machine and dress up ass Marty
its on my bucket list...
Not sure why but I have a fascination for new old stock anything lol
Me too. Relics of a bygone era. ❤
@@BobBob-oe9uf literally going back to the future 📡
Man I used to pass by this place everyday on the southwest side of town. They would have a bunch of Deloreans parked outside, all in pristine condition.😊
Because no one would buy the turd of a car just AWFUL !
It's on the northeast side....in Humble, TX
@@KB-ke3fi I think they moved years ago to the northside because it's not on the SW anymore.
I always wanted a DeLorean.
Note to self;
1. Move to Texas.
2. Find a really old person who still have one an buy it off of them.
PK_Haseo you might get one cheap lol
PK_Haseo Warning about buying one... With a DeLorean you get EXACTLY what you pay for. You can find them all day long on eBay for about 40K... yeah... And you'll get a 40K DeLorean too. Advice: Don't buy a 40K DeLorean unless you can afford to invest another 40K.
NorthernChev to my neighbor is selling one for $28k and its in great shape with 78,000 miles
bendsomemetal Ford then scoop it up and resell it. Because if it is what you say it is, it's worth 50. ...or it may be worth 28, and there may be things he's not telling you about.
New deloreans are still available today: 😃
Uploaded 8 years ago: 😔
Random person: “hey what happens when you get to 88 mph Them: “I get a ticket”
"When this baby hits 88mph, you're gonna see some serious shit"
A smart enterprising entrepreneur would make a brand similar to these with updates, call it by another name, keep the gull wing doors and sell it at an affordable price and watch his company growing phenomenally.
that place is already taken by Miata
Gregory Trane i agree
Me:see a delorean*
My brain:A TIME MACHINE!!!
Most beautiful car, crappiest engine.
We can rebuild her faster stronger better...
she has been in cryostasis...
it is time... (dramatic music)
with the power of the internet, we can do it!
[I am serious]
Politically Incorrect Brontosaurus but it's a bloody time machine
All you need to hit is 88mph & you could change the world.
I drove one back in 82, it was a dog. That lousy 'froggy' Peugeot engine ruined the potential of this beautiful car
actually, it was "cannibalized" with parts from Peugeot, Volvo AND Renault engines.
The PRV V6 has also been used in lots of other cars, mainly sports coupes, (inlcuding the DeLorean, of course) by other much smaller brands over
the decades.
Sometimes with a turbo, sometimes even with a twin turbo, (which Renault did on its own Renault 25 Biturbo and then the
later Renault Safrane Biturbo in the '90s).
While due to Peugeot buying out Citroen in around '76, Citroen also got the PRV V6, eventually, in the top spec models of it's upper size cars, (starting
with the XM from '89, then the Xantia, C5, C6, etc).
The DeLorean really needed a turbo, (or supercharger) as either standard or option right from the start.
Due in no small part to its heavy stainless steel body, (but at least that keeps the body panels rust-free!!!).
It's crazy they don't now offer the option of an upgraded DeLorean, (as suggested above) with the performance it should have to go with the looks,
rather than just selling it 'as it was' when new way back in the early '80s.
Awesome info, I learned something new!
WTH
From Leo: Factory Trained Volvo Technician; that was the worst engine Volvo ever offered. I am sure that adding a turbo would make it even less reliable. Uneven firing, noisey, 170 cubic inches of leaks, bad cams, blown head gaskets and bad timing chains held together by tiny corroded bolts. . Maybe ok for a collector, or a trailer queen, not something you would want to take on Holiday.
I want one!
KrychuTIR its a shit car
StraksParty it doesnt matter lol
KrychuTIR probably get them cheap now,if you don't mind flood damage. lol
Yeah everyone does... i guess
KrychuTIR who doesn’t
Should source aluminum LS engines to put in these things; not like a Vette version, but more middle of the road V8; put a reasonable transmission/gearbox and make brake/suspension adjustments as necessary and those things would be freaking awesome. 88 mph would then be well within reach!
Nah man, it needs a Voodoo, or a blown Coyote engine!
Apparently the engine was restricted for the US market, so you could just not do that.
merp ius nah, i’d say turbo the renault prv v6 to make 400hp at least. and strengthen the rollcage as it is a unsafe car.
The DeLorean, all show, no go. Still an amazing car
The old plant in Northern Ireland where they were made is only two miles from me now.
In fact, I loojed after one of the guys DMC brought in to put the crap stuff right. Great stories!
You still have any idea if there are any left in northern Ireland? I've lived here all my life and have seen a few but would love to have one
You can see another reason why the company failed. Ordering for just in time assembly process has always been more cost effective. All that cash was setting in excess car parts... not working in R & D, not working in advertising, not working toward payroll.
im pretty sure John DeLeorean himself was shonkey as they come too. he was arrested for fraud etc. fully fledged conman
@@slickstrings No. Real conmen don't get noticed.
I saw a delorian @ 3 am in LA @ a gasstation. Unlocked and had everything on it from Back to the Future. I was the only one there when i walked up to it and the gas station was closed. I'll never forget that!
GREAT SCOTT!!

That Sodding Gamer dmc?
That Sodding Gamer GMC, you mean DMC
Yeah it's as simple as spending hundreds of millions on R&D and meeting the safety requirements of the current day. Want to become a millionare? Give thesoddinggamer 200million.
Oh dude this is sooo good to know cuz I can't wait to buy it when am old enough
No McFly ever amounted to ANYTHING in the history of Hill Valley!
at 88mph, these deloreans will literally fall apart.
Noseefood-Or leave the planet!
If you install a Flux Capacitor, a Space-Time Continuum and give it some plutonium, it can bring you to 1955
Nah man thats just your parts getting sent to the past
@@certifiedbruh2180 or just go to 3055 to get better time travelers. Problem soloved
Thats some serious shit.
18k in early 80's, that was a lot of $$$ back then!
It was garbage... I can't believe some people saw this thing in a bad movie and are making a big deal for this car. I drove one back in the 80s could give the keys back to the sales person fast enough.
this was the first film I watched just after I had been taken into care, always loved the time machine, im in the UK, so I just have to dream.
If I bought a Delorean I’d only drive it from time to time
Nice one
Oh yeah I want one now. I wonder how much they want.
Seen a report last year , that they wanted $110,000 for each one sold
Dam that's to much.
+Savage Life That's who this video is about. :)
Wow good production Cnet! I thought it was a Verge video until i looked at the logo.
The fact they got the blueprints is good enough.
Hopefully none of them got damaged back in all that bad weather
Would it violate the space time continuum if I disassembled my DeLorean and feed it to Mr Fusion?
I'm sad that one day they'll run out of parts :/
But they have the blueprints of all the parts.
they still have enough doors alone for 500 more cars before theyd have to make new ones seing as they make 30 odd cars a year at a gues thats over 15 years from now before theyd even have to build new doors, at a gues if they did keep building new cars and keep fixing old ones they would propobly use the stock in a little over 10 years. and like p12 said they have all the BP they need to build new ones.
Original made parts from the factory itself. They have all the tech specs to make more in the future.
3d printers will be able to print anything..
putnamehere hold ma doodle ...
Wanted one since I was 9 years old. Saw Back to the Future in the theater with my mother and was blown away!
Please just keep this thing for 30 more years I'm still 13 and I need to get it. PLEASE!
Gonna be back in time.

I just bought one from this company, imma tell you guys I'm super happy to be apart of this car

Go there. After selling your house.
Execute Order 66
Go back to 1985 in your time machine and order one.
I live 10mins away from the factory.

this car with an electric motor would be cool. just use tesla's current technology...
Great idea!
If I remember correctly they are trying to do an electric version at the factory!
They already offer one. But using Tesla's patents would put it on a universal plant forum and they won't have to reinvent the wheel. Almost plug and play. Good call out!
Carlos Salazar yeah with flux capacitor on it
My thought as well. DeLorean has never been known for a good engine anyways.
It's 2024 I am 53 years old and I still want one.
If they’re smart, they should make a carbon fibre alternative and power it with an electric motor, large battery pack and fast recharge system. Then it would truly be back-in-the-future.
A Tesla motor option
It would ruin the cars iconibility.
Do you do tune ups any time possible literally I can be there last month
*RUclips Algorithm* has brought us together, at 2AM
If you've never seen one in real life, you just can't know how cool this car really is.
i really hope they would make a modern version of this car
I’m not gonna lie, once I turn 16 I’m getting one
I've always wanted one! When I was 4 years old, I went to visit my grandpa, who owned one. He let me sit in the driver's seat! Later, when I was 27, I found out that my grandpa left me that car in his will! My cousin was supposed to maintain it until I turned 21, and then give it to me, but the guy wrecked it and sold it for parts!
I want one and put an LS engine in it. Reliable, no rust would be so much fun.
renter007 you realise the chassis rots like hell?
I want one so badly
