There are a lot of Delorean videos on RUclips, but I'm trying to give you the closest look you've yet to see of the DMC-12. The Delorean as a "real" car, not glamour shots of a museum queen. A real, regularly driven Delorean, with all the usual wear-and-tear, up close and personal! Enjoy!

Cool video man. "It's not a race machine, it's not a time machine, it's a SMILE machine" - read that in an article online about the Delorean and it's totally true. I've never seen more people smile when they see the car. Want to create a circus? Pull up to a gas station in a Delorean and open a door. Want people to jump out at stop lights and take pictures of your car like the paparazzi? Drive a Delorean down the street and it happens. It's an insane car, I love mine and I can tell you love yours. Good stuff.
Agreed on all your points @Vintage Crazy Jay. In stand-still traffic one time, I had a guy stopped in the opposite direction roll down his window, hang out of it and say "Are you kidding me? A f#$%ing DeLorean!" with arms stretched out. Lots of thumbs-up and rubber-necking from people when I'm out and about.
I've wanted a delorean since high school and I'm almost out of college. I don't care how long it takes me in life. I'm getting a fucking delorean, and nobody can ever deter me from that dream.

This one of my all time favorite cars. I dont consider it a sport car I think of it have more style then anything. I want to own one of these iconic cars one day.

I envy you for having one. The Delorean is my dream car and never sat in one or drive one. I've bee next to them a few times, but yet to drive one. I will some day. Hopefully a manual and star playing Back to the Future soundtrack.

This just makes me fall in love with the car more. Anyone I spoke to about the DeLorean being a good car was immediately shut down about the reliability and the horrid engine. Yes, it’s underpowered but it’s not about that. Yes, the original cars weren’t made very well but with a little something that every car needs called MAINTENANCE can make the car a brilliant and reliable car to own
Owned mine 20 years so far this July. Fires up every time. Delivered pizza with it I high school.
Basic maintenance guarantees it (and any car) can last forever and stay reliable!

Exactly! If anything, I'll bet DeLoreans have the highest percentage of manufactured cars that are over 30yrs old and still on the road - specifically because they're well-cared for (which, in a way, also speaks to their overall reliability.)
Great video and true facts. I have driven one though it was an Auto but not a manual but i hope to this summer. The Car rides really smooth and there is enough HP to get you moving what else do you need. And on the Freeway its smooth and comfortable
dvddmc Couldn't agree with you more. People pick on this car saying its slow and performance sucks. Honestly, how much horsepower do you really need to be a sports cars or fast enough? I love the performance and im a big fan of the PRV engine. I gave mine a bit more bump in power with a Spec-1 exhaust, cold air intake, K&N filter, stainless steel bigger air box and a throttle body spacer. The interior is a custom 2 grey/black. Custom lighting, custom radio and a host of other things.
I just watched this Video for the 12th time. I just love the way it hits all the perfect area's of info. No extra words to fill the air space. Just words that capture the very point that needs to be said. I can't wait to watch it again because every time I do I catch something new I missed the last time I watched. I'm waiting for my Delorean to be finished from DMC NORTHWEST and get delivered to my front door. This Video is making me jones for it and yet it comforts me at the same time. Thank You for your time and effort. :)

Great review! Was shocked to still see you have the original washer bottle in yours.
That bottle on the right side of the engine that I think you're referring to is the coolant expansion tank. The washer bottle is hidden under the fiberglass bodywork in the front of the car.

Looks like you have a few battle scars on your '83, including the dreaded "eyebrows" over the headlights. I like the DMC striping on the quarter panels. I have the BAE turbo on mine and it has more than enough power for my needs. I've driven a '79 Lotus Esprit and my DeLo is ten-fold better for suspension and visibility. And as far as people liking the DeLo, mine draws more people at cruise nights than the hopped Mustangs, Corvettes and AFCs (Another F-ing Camaro). Nice vid.

Excellent review I am looking for the Delorean as my future car (Yeah yeah, I know, shut up) and wanted an in-depth review. I never knew in the later models where the fuel fill door is at, where the E-brake was. I didn't even know that compartment behind the seats existed! I would give 200 thumbs up if I could, but RUclips is like an old man in an ice cream shop for that one.... Oh well. Wish me luck I can get one someday, as I live right dead-smack center where no dealerships are, I'm from Wyoming... So, the car is pretty scarce. But imagining being the only one in Wyoming with a Delorean..... Maaaaaaannnn... the looks on everybody's faces... Well, in a few years I suppose... Anyway EXCELLENT review! ^.^

We used to visit my dad's army buddy at his ranch outside Cody all the time.
On that note, I've heard the DMC does quite well in the snow since the engine sits directly on top of the rear drive wheels.
I would assume so, in snow, RWD is the way to go, It also depends on tire width. Just so I know, about how wide are the tires you have on it currently?
Rears are supposed to be 235/60R15's, but I (and most owners) use 225/60R15's.
The 225's are a tiny bit higher profile, but much easier to buy.
But yes, they are very wide back tires.
I always heard that in the snow, you want the engine over the drive wheels for traction.
I don't have to worry about snow in Houston, but it the rain, trucks have a hard time keeping the rear wheels from spinning.
So, I'm assuming that's 15"? I'm not good with too much automotive, I know what a carbourator is, but not what the tire size is, I apologize. XD
Yup, 15 is the rim size. 15 inches on the back, 14 inches on the front.
Great video and review. I only noticed one technically factual error. The DeLorean engine does not have electronic fuel injection, it has mechanical fuel injection.

The "Helicopter" rumor spawns from parts used in the time machine from the Back to the Future. The artists used hoses from helicopter engines. Very hard to come by hoses at that.
I also think it stemmed from the 48 Tucker using a modified 0-335 engine originally intended for a helicopter (Bell 47).

Have had a DeLorean all my life. I'm 15 and my Dad bought it about 20 years ago. He got it for 2500$. It had some pretty major dents on the side when he got it. The guy he bought it from said he got into a fight with some bikers or something. So my Dad bought a new front right fender and new hood. Then he took out the engine because the previous owner said that it hadn't been running good. And my dad completely disassembled the engine and stored the pieces in a crate. This is now about 4 years after he bought it. He then found out that his wife (My mom) was pregnant with me. And after that, the DeLorean, and the matching #s engine are just sitting around collecting dust. The interior is nearly mint, with some crap wiring the previous owner did that seems like an easy fix. The exterior is basically perfect except for the front bumper being held on with 20 year old zip ties. (Just a little unfinished story I wanted to share).
That is awesome. I can only imagine being born with a DMC for a "brother." ;)
I know this comment is 1 year old, but I would absolutely love to have that situation. That's exactly what I want from a car, and even better a DeLorean. I want it to be hurt, but fixable. This way, I can create a bond with the car and say "It used to look like this-- but now looks like this." I love restoration projects, and if I could get my hands on a DeLorean, I'd love it. I myself, am also 16. (I was 15 at the time of this post, so we're almost the same age). I'm very jealous of you my friend. Keep her running and give her good care. :)
HAHAHAHA $2500 for a DeLorean? are you sure it wasn"t a fiero? sometimes a lot of people get those cars mixed up or maybe you meant $25,000? The average price for a delorean 20 years ago was $14K to 25K now the average price is $35K to 65K and up.

Yeah, it's over 30 years old. Runs great but I plan to do a full restoration and bump the motor up to the power it was supposed to have.

Better than ever. Replaced the cooling fans and added a cold air intake. Daily drove her for a few months when my daily crapped out.
Why do some DMC 12'S look like there is bulge on the front end just up on the high beam head lights while some them are flush straight???
About 35 years worth of heat from the headlights warping the plastic. The unwarped bumpers are either extremely low-mileage cars or have had the plastic re-worked with a heat gun, or have replaced the bumper entirely.
Do they have airbags?
Nope. Not many cars of the era did. However, the first prototype Deloreans did.
it's me again. I just watched your Video AGAIN for the 400,000 time. I think. I am waiting for DMC Midwest to complete the rebuild I asked them to do for me from Stage #2 all the way to Power Steering, Backup Camera to Suspension, well you name it and they are doing it. Watching your Video just calms me down from the anticipation of getting mine a few thousand $$$ later and weeks at that. Now the reason I am on here is to ask the question: What were you going to say at the end of your Video just as the camera dropped off it's support and you said " well I got some words in" or something like that. I believe it was about the COOLING FANS. I think your opinion and thoughts are on the nail. So be a sweetie and tell me what it was. Make something up if you have to. I've seen the Video so many times I feel like I missed the BEST part. lol

My 1992 Camaro RS with its 305 only made 170hp. Now it has a 350. I’m sure with a couple tweaks that PRV can make some more power
Absolutely. PRV in 1988 Le Mans made over 800hp. DMC's "new" DeLorean GTO makes 350hp from supercharging the PRV.

I've seen a few other vids here in U-Tube, and some of the DMC's (now configured to have the originally intended, raw, growling power and lower ride) seem to be blowing the socks off their drivers. So yeah if there's a place you can open her up and that b-yatch do what she was made for, then by all means, give us (armchair sports car drivers) a wow! Thanks again and can't wait to see!
Yup, some are souped up a bit. Even 200hp in a DMC is a blast! I'll see if I can find a safe place to open her up a bit. It is fun to push her a bit and drive her spirited.

Oh, just that the stock fans are terrible. They draw too much current, blow the circuit, and don't move much air. The cooling fans were the single biggest reliability issue. Replacing the fans with modern ones makes the car 100,000x more reliable. No more overheating.

Why do they all have bent front numbers? Are they like the C3 Corvette bumpers?
Assuming you mean front "bumpers" it's due to heat from the headlights warping the plastic over 35 years.
But yes, sort of. The back bumper is nowhere near as flimsy and wobbly as a C3's. The front bumper is very rigid. Both absorb slow speed impacts remarkably well, as per its design.
What kind fuel do you use?
j s Regular 87 octane. Anything more is a waste even according to DMC themselves.
Oil 20w-50. The engine is a workhorse, just feed it something flammable and some grease to keep her running.

I'm waiting to get a delorean when I'm 17.... these prices will dive down when the new delorean comes back in 2017.
Not likely. There is lots and lots of confusion about the "new" Deloreans. The "new" Deloreans will be original Deloreans with upgraded parts. New engine, suspension, electronics, etc...then registered as a new year model.
Delorean prices have risen steadily since I bought mine in July 2000 for $10k in good running condition. I get regular offers for $30,000 (not for sale).
At best, the value will eventually level off, but not decrease.
BUT if you look hard enough, you may be able to find an abandoned, non-running Delorean for under $15,000, but it will require at least (and I mean bare minimum if you're lucky) another $10,000 to just get running.
Rule of thumb in 2016 for buying a Delorean is a good daily driver will cost about $30,000. If you find one for $10,000 it'll need $20,000 more to get road worthy. If you find one for $20,000 it'll need $10,000...etc..etc...etc...but each car is different. Some will need more, some less, and you may luck out and get one for "cheap" that doesn't need much work.

As a fellow Delorean owner, I am always amused by the fact people would 100% assume that you own a Delorean because you are a fan of the movie Back to the Future... Well in my case I don't really like the movie, I am more interested by the unique design of the car and the great industrial adventure it was. I always wonder, what would this car represent today if it had never been used in the back to the future trilogie. Would it be a forgotten cheap sport car like a Pontiac Fiero, or would it still be what it is today...
The movie made it a movie star, but I think it would still be very popular among car people. The history alone is far, far more interesting than any movie.
This "don't even ask about the automatic..." gets me...i've driven both and honestly speaking the automatic isn't that bad as described in this video. Yes it was indeed a bit slower. but those..maybe one second doesn't even matter on a car that isn't even about performance nowadays. every modern minivan will beat the delorean. No matter if it's manual or automatic.
Just boils down to preference. I wouldn't pass on an auto in reasonable shape these days.
Very soon my DMC will be the only manual I own...so partly it'll just be for stick nostalgia.
You're right though. My 2018 Pacifica hybrid would utterly destroy the Delo 0-60.
Stock DMC is a cool cruiser. But a tuned 200HP+ DMC...that's stick all day.

Ok, so I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a DeLorean that DMC Midwest has up for $43K (VIN05870). It's got low miles, and practically restored. Guy brought it for $20K and commissioned DMC to restore it, put another $20K into it and then he had a kid and dropped the project (as per what Mike at DMC Midwest told me). I'm trying to get an idea about how much a car like that would cost per month. I'm in college (and paying for it), but I figured if I wait any longer, some idiot (Daryl Kemsley) is going to drive the prices up. I got an idea on insurance (about $180 for full coverage from State Farm and Farmers), but who and what would you recommend going through for financing? I should probably ask the guys on DMCtalk and see what they say.
PS: I remember there being a guide on comparing all the small differences between VINs. Can't quite remember what its called, but I'm sure I can google it. I just want to have an extra source to compare things when I go to see the car.
One thing to think about is how much you're going to drive it. Mine is not my daily driver, so I only have classic insurance. I pay about $500/year with Hagerty for $30k of coverage. My car is only valued at $30k as it is unrestored...obviously.
$43k for a decently restored DMC sounds about average and if you hold on to it for a long time, might be a good investment if you don't put a lot more into it...but don't quote me on that. The market is finnicky. DMC's could be worth $100k in 5 years...God only knows...but I doubt it.
So, above all else, only get it if you can afford it, but most importantly if you love it.
The car is pretty much sound. There is a laundry list of things DMC did to it including: adjusting the steering column, replacing the brake and fuel systems, replacing all 4 axle boots, etc..
I'm hoping to pay somewhere around $300-$400 per month on it if possible (I have no idea what is realistic in this case, but I'm willing to work for the car's sake). If anything I would drive it during the spring and summer seasons and store in during fall and winter. I would love to daily it, but I know it wouldn't be best to do so.
I do want to start off owning a DeLorean in the best way I can. My dream is to own it and enjoy while I'm young and pass it down my family from one generation to the next. With a car presenting itself as a "never rusting", timeless, iconic classic in both car culture and pop culture, I hope to have my kids enjoy a car like that for themselves and their own future children. Of course I would have rules, like no modding the car, no spoilers or neon... just enjoy the car for what it is.

Love your video but can't you keep your classic cleaner like allot cleaner and invest some money into it ! Also if you can't afford to .....sell it to someone who can take care of it !

Deloreans were only made in 1981 and 1982, so the thumbnail is technically wrong.
There are three model years that were sold. 81, 82, and 83. Roughly 4,000 81's, 4,000 82's, and around 700 83's. Mine was manufactured in August 1982, which makes it model year 1983. That and the vin being 15575...and it officially being a 1983 DMC-12.
Every automaker does this. If you buy a 2018 Honda in January, it was built in late 2017.
The thumbnail isn't wrong, it is a 1983 Delorean DMC-12.

This was a few years before the upsurge in popularity. So around 2001-ish. Nobody really knew what it was and it cost less than a Honda Civic. It was my only car so it's just what I had to use for a while.

this Car needs a deep Restoration! Dings an Dents, Panels fit very poor, Bumpers don´t fit, Eyebrows... not to speak about the Interior. Poor Car. What a shame!

I would´t even drive this condition Car in Wintertime as a cheap "waste-junk"-Ride. And as this is a relative valuable Classic it should be preserved and restored. But as you describe... every one has different expectations. I would´t even touch the Steering Wheel in that condition, sorry. - But nice that it is getting restored.
It used to be my daily and has served me well for 17 years so far. Even delivered pizza with it for a couple years. Fires up every time. No rust. No salt. The car has lived in south Texas its entire life.
I have zero problem with its current "patina" before getting it restored. It is the entire point of this video, as stated in the description. What a Delorean looks like after over 1/3 century of constant use as a real vehicle, not a showroom queen.
In other words, it's only original once. This may be an increasingly rare example of a factory original specimen and I wanted to capture it in this current state of repair for permanent documentation.
After she gets a nose job, face lift, and new boobs...she'll get more attention from gawkers...but she won't be my old high school sweetheart anymore.
So you may not touch her until she's perfect...but to me she's beautiful despite her cellulite.
She is not "waste-junk" to me. She is beauty in rubber shoes.
So for now, until her surgery, I will remind her she is still beautiful.

Never said there were 1983 Euro-spec DMCs...just that there are Euro-spec DMCs that do not have the same emission restrictions, IE, no catalytic convertors or lambda systems.

I don’t agree. The Irish Civil War was between June 1922 and May 1923. It has absolutely no connection to a delorean, never mind a car review video and shouldn’t have been referenced.

Please do me a HUGE favor....please put stainless braided fuel lines in that engine NOW. The stock lines crack with age and are the NUMBER ONE reason these cars burn to the ground. Thank me later.
