2001 X5 4.4i with sport package. I have Two hundred and four thousand miles on it with no issues. I highly recommend this SUV.
I've got a 55 plate x5, the 3.oD sport with 223,000 miles. Had new turbo,engine,injectors,all the usual bearings,driveshafts,discs,pads. I get 30mpg daily and drives faultless. Brilliant cars if cared for

Facelift one in sterling grey with that torquey Diesel engine. I’m hanging on to mine for ever. Despite using it in the harshest climate of Djibouti, defective door carriers, suspect tranny etc.

We had the Porsche and the Range Rover from these 3. The Porsche Cayenne S was faultless for the 8 years we had her. The Range Rover we had for a few years back in 2000. The auto gearbox kept messing about along with the suspension.
We currently have the x6 but the 2nd gen, it’s been great so far. The x6 and the cayenne are both on my channel as very in-depth tours.
E53 BMW X5 is the best, pick the 3.0 M54B30 engine for performance and reability.

I had an X5, looked amazing, drove amazing and it was very comfortable but it was as unreliable as my ex gf. (Very)
Same with the e60.
I have an x5 for 19 years now and I had no big problems just fails in the window mechanism and this year I just needed to replace one hammer in the engine.
@@plamenvasilev i drive an e60 2007 525d, never had any major issues besides the usual maintenance. never left me on the road, so yeah, i take good care of it, and it still drives well. bought it with 150tkm, and now it has 235tkm. cheers

@@dzoni1990 Diesels are usually more reliable than their petrol counterparts if properly taken care of. But they do cost more when stuff needs to be done compared to the petrol counter part. Still I prefer the diesel versions over the petrol.

I have X5 3.0D xDrive. Its a pleasure to drive it and has 245cp stock. Its a monster. The oil change and filters costs me 250€. The only issue i have is the consumption in the city, i get 13-14%. But dude. Its a 2t+, 4x4 permanent, huge engine thats why the consumption is big
At the very least, the X5 is not bad when DIY Maintained. 3 and 5 Series Parts Sharing is nice.
The Other two? Not So much.

uhuihuihiuhful It may have shared some parts with the Touareg but the Touareg isn't as common as the 3 and 5 Series. Even here in a Third World South East Asian Country E36, E39 and now E46 parts are available and a lot of those parts are compatible with some X5s.
My E53 X5 has been awesome. It requires a decent amount of maintenance, but has never let me down. A great SUV for a medium level mechanic.

@@shitboxoffroad the biggest one was the Crank case ventilation syste. If you're an intermediate mechanic, it's a day job. While you're replacing it you have access to the idle control and throttle body and it's good to clean em real good. Other than that, CV boots, fluid changes, ball joints. Stuff like that. Stay away from the V8s and air suspension and you have a decently reliable ride

The '03-'06 X5 is the only one that still looks as good as all other competitors modern SUV's!

I've had a '06 E53 3.0d (218 hp) from new without any major issues. 40% City /40% B roads /20% Highway. Find that it's at its best on the highway doing 140-150 kph.
Maintenance is frugal, anything at all going wrong is super expensive. Have changed the A/C compressor around 160k, front bushes at 200k, accessories pulley at 220k and of course the Nav Screen has about 15-20% dead pixels (well known BMW problem). It's now got 250k (150k miles) and still drives like a dream! Fuel economy is outstanding for its age, not so much for modern standards...
Cayenne hands down. I love mine dearly.

I picked up a 2005 4.8is 2 years and 30K miles ago. It has been utterly reliable. 17 mpg (UK gallons) though!
Don't sweat it, few years ago I was given a courtesy car. Ford Fiesta with 1.0 litre engine, kerb weight of 700-800kg... It returned 22.1mpg uk gallons and I brimmed it 4x in the week I had it... So my Cayenne giving better performance like yours at 16-18 real world combined isn't too bad.👍
I thought owning a car in general is a money pit? I mean for that budget you are pretty much stuck with some boring ass vehicle that you only use to get yourself from point A to point B. That is, if you're trying to be practical. Most people in that group would be concerned mostly with whether their car is running and they won't bring it to the shop every time something creaks. And if they do, they're bound to throw away a lot of cash are these would be 10-20 year old vehicles. However, someone who looks for a luxury SUV (basically a SUV that you drive in the city) is not looking for a practical solution. I personally can't see the appeal of driving a big SUV in the city but I also think the face-lifted X5 Gen.1 is one of the best looking SUV ever made.

Towing puts pressure on the auto box. I would avoid any that have it fitted. But also listen to the gears and it could have been used mildly.

BMW X5 e53 is the most underrated bad ass shape of all time , once u get the the common problems of this model dealt with you are left with fit for purpose pound for pound tool! My e53 X5 is proudly parked between my Porsche and the expensive scrap Bentley next to it … take which ever one away u want but hands of my blacked out mafiozee pimp ride lol 😂 ❤️❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧
Of all these, the BMW x5 aged the most beautifully. It really is a thing of beauty.
The cayenne turbo is so beautiful. My brother had one of those a few years back and I would get to take it to school in my teens. Even passed my road test in it. 😭 good times
I had a 2000 4.6 HSE Range Rover. It was a complete & utter disaster. That said, my current ‘07 L322 Supercharged has been brilliant.
My dad has got a e53 X5 4.4 2001 sport pack with 370.000 miles still going strong no body issues done gearbox last year and timing chain done at 150.000 & 350.000 miles still use it had full inspection by 2 bmw specialists came back with no faults he’s still uses it but now has 2018 x5m keeps having problems with it not as good as the e53

We actually got one of these cars, a black Cayenne S. They actually look pretty good in dark color like Black, hardly dated especially if detailed well. And no we are not smug, rich wannabes. I am just a car enthusiast on a budget and I find the Cayenne to be a pretty good car, I am still experimenting on the cost of ownership... but so far its ok. We also have at the same time a Land Cruiser Prado 90. They are very different cars, the Cayenne is a all you can do car. The combination of my Skyline and Land Cruiser. It has gone on light off road, so far even with street tires it can keep up with the Land Cruiser. I am planning to swap the 20" tyres to a 18" AT tyre on light off roads, as despite the Cayenne can go high and has a proper low gear transfer case the tires is what will hold it back on off roads. So just swap the tires depending on the drive on the weekend.
Nice. I have a Turbo 955 and a Turbo 958. The latter being LPG. Not really brave enough to LPG the 955 because their engines are already om the edge and LPG heat can kill them.
I was wondering if the X5 was anygood? Obviously this video said it was but you don't see many old ones on the road so anyone have any input on this?
Frank Burdo the 3.0i in-line 6 with m54 is reliable . i’m not so sure about the v8 ones . it has a quite a lot of plastic so be at look out for coolant leaks in the coolant reservoir expansion tank

Ive bought 4 years ago a range p38dse. Drove 40000 miles. Cost me 3500€ purchase , spend 6000€ tires , brakes, 4new airbags , compressor, fuel high pressure lines, starter alternator, battery, al water hoses, radiator, had gasket replacent, ( exept head gasket change dis al repairs myself) and sold it last year for 1000€ with leaking head gasket again!! . Now drive a new toyota landcruiser prado!
if you want go off road buy Land Rover... if you want back home buy Land Cruiser :)
G M bought v8 cayenne 4 years ago and is my daily, driven hard and barely needed anything more than oil changes... I Would buy it again!
I have owned my 1 owner 2003 X5 3l sport diesel. with many extras for 5 years. I have had trouble free driving in all that time. It had 22,000 miles when I bought it and still only has 76,000 miles in 2022.
If you are in the market for a second hand BMW then go always for a well maintained one and respect the price. Those owners took the time and money to keep it up for years to come which will be your benefit as well if you buy it.
BUT
If it looks anywhere like the owner has just used it and done only borderline nescessarities to keep the car alive then either get a very good price on the deal or walk away.
If you buy it cheap (which is okay if you plan to do all the service later) you can remedy the bad thigs the car had to live with but if the price is too high then leave it be and go searching for another one. Keeping up a well maintained BMW is easy and fun to do while keeping up a badly maintained BMW is pretty much a money pit a lot of people are talking about. There is no cheap BMW. Ever. Either you pay for it on the start or you pay for it along the way when you start cheap. Both is okay when you account for that but it is a sad drama when you think you bought a bargain BMW that was the cheapest one on the market (or one of the cheapest).
All three of them will leave you on the side of the road, not heroes in my book

Edgars Ļebedevs I bet one cayenne like that one would easily be just 6-8 grand.. but that's only because of the high depreciacion of right hand drive cars. The range rover seemed really smooth looking on the outside wich is rare for it's age and britain weather... I bet it is around 4 grand. the bmw is just in price as they stated. more important is the fact they are all big engines that also seem to depreciate a lot compared to regular sized engines. on the other hand owning a x5 3.0D means you can use 3-5-7 series as donnors for parts which is nice.

The comments below are so correct. All these vehicles would be lovely, nearly new. If you are well heeled, then go for a 3 year old low mileage version of any of these. Older exotic cars can be astonishingly expensive even if you get them free. Where did Tiff get his prices of repairs from? Not from the real world, even from independents, I feel certain. If you're OK at easy jobs, go for an old Toyota Colorado (or Shogun). Get it, say, 12 years old, 130K m and £4K, then use it.

This is TERRIBLE advice. There is no such thing as a high-end SUV on a budget. If you can only afford 6,000 pounds for a vehicle, you shouldn't be buying anything with a luxury label. The repair costs will very quickly end up costing you more that the value of the vehicle.

I have the cayenne turbo 955 with 450 hp. It’s fucking insane even in today’s standards. If you have a steady income I would say it is very well worth the money, just be on the lookout on some major maintenance if the previous owners didn’t want to spend on it. I had to spend 5000 € on it after buying it for around 13.000€ but it’s still bargain for that kind of performance and road presence. Oh and yes the tires were around 1000€
The only car mildly capable off road is the Range Rover. The other two look very cool, specially the X5, but are just gas-guzzling, glorified vans.

I beg to differ. The Cayenne with the right options (Air suspension/Front-Rear LSD) was very capable off-road.

These cars are so cheap because nobody wants them! Don't buy this unless you're rich or a mechanic..
Annual maintenance on any of these is a minimum of $2000 USD a year, and that's just to keep one of these running. Then there's the cost of the extra fuel that it burns. I have an older, "lightly driven" MB E320 with very few mechanical issues, and yet I am astounded at the cost of the plastic junk and aging electronics that break on it.

@@nomebear that's not entirely true. Own a cayenne for 4 years now and to do the regular scheduled maintained costs nowhere near 2k usd. Nothing major gone wrong. At 150.000km so far.
Anybody can buy these cars, but not everybody can afford to own one for a prolonged period of time. There is a reason why in the states, a 04 x5 is like $6k while an escalade is more like $12k. The escalade will make it to 150k miles without all your car computers frying. And its a leather yukon and yukons last for a very long time

The range rover has the best offroad capabilities, but stuff breaks everytime. I know someone owning the second gen and he needs to fix something quite often. Spare parts are also not the cheapest ones. The x5 and cayenne suck offroad but are higher quality builts. So it all depends on what you're looking for.
bmw x5 is pretty and good looking i had 2 of those the are good until they come 200 000 km after that they spend more like 3-4 more and start to have problems with the automatic transmition warrning lights come on constantly so well maitnence all the time all services but still warnings from the dash board for the transmition manual still gets better as i go to 350 000km so carefull dont buy it if it goes more then 200 000km maybe nothing will happen but if problem come be ready to sell the house for parts

I probably would take the X5, Cayenne is still really expensive to buy and maintain, and that particular Range Rover model is very unreliable, my neighbor had one, and it was more on tow truck than on road.
If you buy the 2.5 TDS from BMW engine, with coil suspension and ZF automatic, the P38 is very reliable. It's the only reliable configuration for the P38.

@@simonbyatt2439 Well you have the 2.5 diesel antique piece from BMW which was installed in the BMW E39 5 Series and that will surely go a long way.
Then you have the ZF automatic which was another outsourced component and then you got the old fashioned coil suspension that avoids the faulty air suspension.
Sure, this combo is pretty hard to find and this P38 is a very slow, low-specc machine but hey, atleast it's reliable.
@@aquadelic8457 the 2.5 overheats an awful lot due to being under powered for the weight of the car, many people fit Ron boxes to give a little extra oomph, however this also maybe down to lack of maintenance from the owner. Coils ruin the ride, the air suspension is simple if maintained as it should be

X5 is probably best option here. Most reliable out the the 3, & generally reliable compared to most EU suvs
British cars have nice designs but their built quality is really bad. They break all the time. Had some experience with range rovers and jaguars at our car shop. And spare parts are expensive.
Now compare this to The Grand Tour or The old Top Gear its like comparing a cake that's been left out for 10 days compared to a sponge cake, guess which one is the off cake XD

Google it stay clear from the early v8 cayennes bores being scored is common place and is new engine job.
Funnily enough the turbo doesn't seem to be affected as I think the bores were coated differently.

The only real hero here is the Range Rover with the 2.5TD BMW engine and coil suspensions...That configuration makes the Range Rover bulletproof, apart from the climate control problems, but otherwise indestructible

Owning a LandRover out of warranty is like playing Russian Roulette with your sanity. The BMW X5 with the 4.4 V8 can be summed up in one word, shxt! The reliability of the v8 X5 is probably no better than a LandRover. It's a shame BMW "cheaped" out so much on the quality of parts otherwise it could of been one of the greats. Although the Cayenne V8 has its flaws, it will probably be the more reliable choice when compared to these offerings. Just make sure the coolant pipes, driveshaft, valve cover gaskets, and coolant over flow tank have been replaced by now. I have a 2005 CTT that I purchased with 46k on the clock and although it hasn't been as reliable as I hoped, its one helluva a machine when you open the loud pedal.
People like to slag off land Rovers as unreliable but I know a Defender owner who bought his one brand new 11 years ago and it has never broken down and never had a penny spent on repairs, just routine oil changes and minor service parts.
I would steer well clear of all the modern stuff from he second generation Range Rover onwards as they are stuffed with too much electronics and as these vehicles age the reliability suffers. The ultimate SUVto me would be a 1st generation Range Rover wi manual gearbox, which ha been properly rebuilt and all the rust got rid of. Nice simple reliable motors - if you can find one that's solid and hasn't been bodged full of body filer and given cheap respray to hide all the horrors!.

The transmission failure is on the pre facelift diesels with the 5 speed auto. The 6 speed auto on the facelift diesel is much better.
Best value now id the Series two Discoverys. They drive well are economic and go well off road. Watch out for rear chassis rot and the optional air suspension unit. though you can convert to coil for about £80.

Sensible comment. I did get 7mpg with city driving in my 955 Porsche once. Whack on LPG and you can see you average 17 mpg go as high as 30 mpg so comparable to a 2 litre engine where in fact it is a 500+ bhp turbo V8. A savvy purchase IS possible.

dslanparty no they don't, fiesta the way I drove it returned 22.1 mpg. 4.5 litre cayenne is close to that... Real world numbers and they way I drive.
