6:18 perfectly describes every crossover the market is drooling over today.
In india the crossover is growing 😂😂
@@shafathm2706 thats rough bro
That's what I've always said. It pisses me off that people spend considerably more money on a worse car. They sit up high and are a tip hazard along with getting worse fuel mileage, but you don't get the advantage of off road credibility, added space, towing capacity, extra seats, etc that you get in a real SUV. It just baffles me why anyone would buy them.
@@Tracert-mc1hu small ego big pockets
@@Tracert-mc1hu Obviously this depends on the specific crossover as there are many.
But people want to sit up higher that's the point. I personally havent noticed any more crossovers flipping over more than cars after months of watching dash cam wrecks which surprised me but I'll let you take that as you will.
Lots of crossovers get pretty good mpg these days especially with hybrid drivetrains.
They are significantly easier to get into and load babies and cargo in as it sits higher up.
Some people might need a third row but only rarely thus a full size crossover like a Highlander, Pilot, Explorer comes in handy as it can sit somebody in if you really need it.
And it looks more cooler to folks than a minivan and is not as expensive as say a Suburban SUV.
I would argue many are more spacious than their counterparts.
Look at the compact crossover the RAV4 vs the compact sedan Corolla. The RAV4 offers much more space and trunk capacity and it's like that along the entire range for most brands.
Most sedans these days dont even have a tow rating or even option towing abilities. They can but manufacturers reccomend against it.
This is just my opinion. People know what they want and car buying as always been a irrational decision.
If it was a rational thing we would all be driving box cars and sport and luxury cars wouldn't exist.
The 2007-2010 facelift of this car solved a lot of the issues he describes. Better interior and exterior materials, slightly improved ride, etc. I guess BMW took his comments to heart!
Other than the value of it's existence. It's still no good off-road and a 5-Series trumps it in everything else for the same price.
Who tf going off road this car lol. Buy jeep or toyota ...
@@TheGreatUniterIsHere Then whats the point of the car? Its not big, its not fast, not really comfortable... they also turned out to be unreliable in many aspects :D
@@NashvilleUK you wanna go off road buy a landcruiser.
It's practically a same car with different seat material and one decorative list more. Which is fine btw
I like how everytime when they talk about off-road, they'll bring on that back Range Rover.
Tuan Do Very good reason. That's the camera car.
+Shane Fell no the discovery is the camera car
+Daan Gisolf I'm afraid our friend Shane is right. They do use the Range as their camera car
they use this Range to film in arctic ( ferrari vs bentley )
They even took a Bentley Continental and Ferrari FF on ice and AGAIN he ended with that bloody Range Rooney.

There is a lot of truth in this sentence 😂

@@ethanstone6644 well top of the line engine is very good, does that make the whole car good? Especially the cheaper versions without it?
Adodoes Clarkson was saying the Land Rover is a better vehicle and that’s laughable in my opinion. The x5 is more preferable but the e83 is a good chassis rides decent has a quality engine and the 5hp is a good tranny. Interior wasn’t my favorite but no cars perfect.
@@ethanstone6644 yeah i agree they are good but this first gen x3 just doesn't look that good. X5 is probably better or just a 3/5 series. New x3 is very nice though and i think the new x5 is too big don't know about reliability
I'm guessing clarkson meant land rover is a better offroad car, which is true but who would take an x3 into the that kind of situation. It handles snow, gravel and muddy areas pretty well but that "road" is just a place to get stuck in
This is just commercial ads
I have a 2006 bmw X3 m-sport trim at 260k miles (418k km) and it's been in the family for 10 years, it has never failed me or my family and still drives like a dream, and I personally very much think it looks fantastic! Gotta love the huge sunroof and the interior and the handling is superb
I currently drive a 2005 X3 3.0 that has been in my family since purchased brand new. 203k miles. It still drives great! In fact just passed inspection today.
You know what’s uncomfortable? When your X5’s air suspension system randomly deflates and you sink down to the road lol.
You don’t have to worry about that on the X3. It’s far more reliable than the X5!

My god, original Top Gear film crew freaking loved their ND filters. Looks beautiful always though haha.
We have an X3 and have had it for 9 years now. Seems to be a fine vehicle, runs through snow well but never taken it off road. Reliability has been okay but the usual stuff like the water pump has failed. I learned how to fix most things myself so its not expensive to keep running.
Normally, a car can be reliable as long as PMS is in order, people tend to think as it ages, they get more reliable, which is the complete opposite, bravo for keeping yours though.

TO be fair, that X3 was on summer road tires which are hopeless off road.
Not on purpose of course ;)
Never really noticed the inflation on new cars. 10 years ago X5 was 37 k now 61k... i know there is more tech but....
thats also mostly caused by the significant decrease in value of the pound compared to the dollar and euro
I know right but I think this is from 2005
2nd hand mate. Half price
I have an X3, and yes, while it's ugly, and made out of cheap materials, it handles like an absolute dream, and is really fun to drive. And I have no clue what Jeremy's on about with the ride. Maybe it's because he's older than I am.
i agree with you for sure it handles so well
Which year do you have
Love the part where Jeremy says did the designer sneeze, cracks me up everytime.
The BMW X3 is the best car for reckless driving. The higher seating position makes you see the road ahead better and the good handling makes it confident doing tight fast maneuvers. If you see a douchebag in an X3 cutting through traffic now you know why.
A much better car for the job much better handling - if you want to do 'reckless driving' - is a Golf GTi or Focus ST....be assured, this X3 and all similar do NOT have good handling in the proper sense of the word!
+ganymedeIV4 I can totally vouch for this as I also had a 96 Ford Explorer in which I totaled a 2003 Dodge Intrepid via T Bone. All I had was a bent down chrome bumper which was fixed with $20 dollars. The Dodge Intrepid on the other hand was totally totaled as they needed the jaws of life to get the passenger out.
it's shit
My BMW X5 2004 model actually split in half a Ford Explorer, the guy was stuck for 6 hours inside. The only damage I had was bent bumper.
z anthony my Lada Niva crashed into 3 explorers and a dodge ... split them all in half... i didnt even fix my lada, just paied 20€ for guy at MOT/TüV not to look if anything is broken
Idk why they hates this car, I have one, for me it is beautiful, it’s exciting if you have de 3.0si, faster, a exciting sound, it’s not the best off roader in the world but is an exciting car, great car guys!
Love this car! I'm on my second! First one went 180k before I sold it. That same car has 240k on it now... Loads of power! Handles great in all road conditions with the correct tires. Great field of view. Tons of space. Great stereo! A little outdated as mine is a 2010 but I like that about it. I actually prefer the stereo and climate control to be separate and not on a screen. Mine has the winter package, premium package, and the most important bi-xenon auto-leveling headlights!
Its based of the E46 that was based off the E36 the greatest bmw model of all time. I have tons of space in the trunk. The panoramic sunroof is awesome. It has roof racks for thous adventures with the kyacks or bikes. Extra ground clearance for those mild off-road conditions and terrible city roads. It's easy to maintain and work on too! Reliable if maintained...
Stop trying to have this lifted station wagon do things it was not designed for... It was designed for light off-road use, snow, rain, grippy and confident driving.
And who the hell thinks this car has a terrible ride! Maybe the M sport package. I love the ride and I do not think it is too stiff by any standard. Its a sport crossover! SPORT luxury! Not comfort luxury.
Thank you, well put. It seems foolish to attempt to drive it in that field with ruts 3 feet deep & wonder why you cant go anywhere when its BOTTOMED out!
I’ve had my 2008 X3 for 11 years. It has 87000 miles. It rides and drives beautifully.
I have burl-wood inserts inside and my windows don’t look like his. It’s quick and fast and corners like my 318i
I honestly don't care what top gear thinks. X3 is a unique car that's very fun to drive. It's very hard to get sick of it too. I imagine if I drove, let's say, an opel, wv, renault etc, I'd get sick and tired of it in a couple of months whereas I'm still enjoying my X3 to this day.
I'm actually in the market for an X3 , I love the show by the way but ... BMW has never advertised their SUVs to be suitable for off road use . its all wheel drive system is built around road conditions like snow or rain , I worked at a BMW dealership for a few years and I can promise you the all wheel drive system on both SUVs in the snow and rain are admirable and you would be happy with it.. Just don't take it on an off road course , if you want to go off road get a land rover or jeep or something like that which is advertised to be good off road vehicles.
I have no idea why Clarkson was surprised at getting stuck taking the X3 off-road, and not just on a dirt path either. I can't speak for the horrible ride, and the styling isn't as bad as he was making it out to be, but clearly this was not a vehicle designed for mud-bogging. Most of today's crossovers and SUVs would have been stuck on that trail, really anything other than a Land Rover, Land Cruiser or Jeep would be in trouble. How many SUVs have low-range 4wd?
@@RoadCone411 Forester could do that easily.
That Average Kayaker then what’s the point of them? When you could have, say, a Toyota Land Cruiser whIch DOES work off road?
That Average Kayaker: Yeah, that sounds good, but why does it have to be an SUV though? Why does it have to be shaped like that? The height of the thing, means it rides badly, doesn't handle and has poor fuel economy. Well the handling problem was broadly solved by BMW, but still, what's the point.
projectilequestion its an excellent car. Sits higher than a sedan with the same or better handling. Good engine, good driver seat height, not terrible on fuel. It’s basically a car with the rain and snow capabilities of a truck if not better. I’ve driven my 2005 x3 through 10 inches of snow in all seasons without any issue. Never been stuck and can truly handle Canadian winter. Awesome vehicle, clarkson is just British, they don’t like German vehicles
I have a 2.0d from 2005... it has almost 500 000 miles.. no problems with it, love it...
Superior handling, superior space, superior in snow and rain. I’ve taken my X3 around some pretty tight corners and it’s basically glued to the road
But is the suspension too hard as he says?
@@karimtemri1664 its hard for bmw. Its nowhere near a veloster n or modern car that is lowered.

I used to work at a car import yard here in Sydney. I drove one of the land rovers about 100m and couldn't wait to get out of it. it's the most uncomfortable thing I've ever been in. Land Rover discovery 4 on the other hand was about as comfortable as the Jaguar FX or the Audi Q7. Very nice car.
This is the first ever Top gear programme i saw, i immediately i found this interesting thats how great this part of the show was.
I have one of these (a few years newer) but I absolutely love it, it is glued to the road and a blast to drive. The ride quality is a bit rough but definitely not as bad as he says it is. For anyone looking to get one of these, I would definitely recommend it.

The BMW X3 is not an all-terrain vehicle / SUV. BMW categorizes the X3 as a Sports Activity Vehicle (which is written absolutely correctly one the plate by the way). That's a big difference! It's a perfect car to go on ski vacation to mention only one example. That is the actual purpose of this car.

Just got an 08 with 130k miles 2 weeks ago. I get what people say when they say its "glued" to the road. Even in the rain on wet roads, its unreal.
My 2008 sure is rough over the bumps, but not to the point where it's annoying or that passengers complain. In fact, I think it helps reduce motion sickness. But what makes the x3 totally unique among SUV's those times and cheap SUV's today, is its ability to go around a corner. Its balance is so good I can control a drift on tarmac after putting in rear wheel drive with the fuse trick. You can do 180kmh and not feel like you're in a death trap. And then it handles corrugated gravel roads surprisingly well as well. It's just those imperfections on tarmac that it likes to pick up. And the 4wd test he did here is just biased - there are many 4wd situations the x3 will handle with ease. It's not a land rover, but its xDrive system is actually pretty good at keeping the wheels from spinning and I have yet to run out of ground clearance.
Seems that this review didn't stop the success of the X3.
Eh, idk, we've been using it on the farm for 11 years from new now, 385k km, good chunk of it off road, still runs. On its third chain though.
Boris I agree with you but I have x3 2005 and is great for the great road and the field does not have much going wrong with the DSC stability
One of the best Reviews he did :D
X3 was never sold as a serious offroad vehicle. That said our 2004 3lt petrol one is the best road vehicle we have had. Apart from that it goes in snow and mud fine. In this video you can see even the range rover could not go through paddy field, only a tractor can, so if you are purely looking for a safe crossover for mostly road then you cannot go past the X3, earlier models more so.
No, the Range Rover could make it through (they use them for the film crews), but it just couldn't pull out the X3.
The M desing version looks great and matches the actual edgier desinglines of the actual cars. The 3.0D with 218hp and 500NM is more than enough and the 3.0sd with 286hp and 580nm is the overkill version. :)
the filter on the cam is AWESOME, the clounds and enviroment look astonishing, BBC has the professionals, you can see that...

Great handling, M54 reliability and power in the 30i version, nice amenities like cold weather package and oversized sunroof, and personally I love the style of the e83 vs later X3s that became too much like the Japanese bubble-shaped SUVs. e83 has great lines and good "shoulders". BMW quality and reliability. Also, these knuckleheads act like it's meant to be an offroad vehicle like a Defender or something and embarrass the e83 by taking it bogging (and in street tires to boot). Hey Jeremy - It's for daily commutes, grocery-getting, football practice, towing the camper or jetskis, moving furniture, and getting around in the ice and snow. Incredible flexibility and performance for the one-car owner who wants it all. Top Gear blew it on this review - they don't get the point and they don't understand what consumers want. They sound like a bunch of whiny British elites who own 5 cars, one specialized for each activity... oh right, they are. :) Glad the X3 has gone on to be an incredible success for BMW.
this wasn‘t too offroad, also what is BMW reliability supposed to mean? Reliable income for your mechanic? Get over it fanboi

My 2010 drives like a dream. Happy fourth of july you limey.
I recently bought one of these and I can certainly say I’m in love with it. Mine is black and it looks gorgeous with those “ugly” plastic bumpers. There are almost everywhere soft touch materials inside. The leather seats are in perfect condition for a fifteen year old car. It is not an off-road vehicle but it’s perfect for the city where the road is not great. I’m not afraid I can scratch the bottom of the car. The seating position is definitely not low and I feel safe inside sitting higher than normal cars. And unlike the X5, the maintenance of the X3 is much cheaper.
I bought one 2.5 years ago and im in love with this.
Its perfect
You don't need to explain yourself to anyone, if you think its a great car that should be all that matters. People will always chat shit no matter what car you buy.

I could watch jeremy reviewing cars for days
it depends, Im from argentina and here we prefers suv"s because the street it so damage and when it rains flood, so you appreciate the higher clearance and you can also go fast in the route
Actualy, the facelift of this model ( after 2007 ) is a very good car. I have a 3.0 sd model with SKN chiptuning. On the road is very fast ( faster than a Cayenne GTS ). On bed roads it can handle ( is not an off road car, but is better then a saloon ). In winter, on slipery roads is perfect with proper tyres. The styling is better on the facelift. There is an improvement on the suspension too. Is not that bumpy like is described even with sport suspension and 18 inch rims
The BMW X3 was not meant for off-road driving. Its a road-car, and a very good one at that. Besides, shown footage is of an old X3, about 2 years old. It has been through several face-lifts and engine upgrades and is now a much better car.
Neither is a Range Rover not now a days but it can get off road trails. Some people might have brought and X3 as they live in the Country and wanted to know it could navigate Country Off Road paths and it can't
my x3 is a beast in the snow as long as I have a little snow clearance, the 4wd is a beast
I had one of these as a company car for about two years and it wasn't so bad. No it doesn't look good and it had the check engine light on the whole time, but I drove it for two years and never had a problem. I'm not a fan of BMW in general but I guess it was alright because it was free

Few buy these SUVs to go off-road. The first half of the review confirms the designers’ emphasis on road performance, leaning on sporty.
The poor off-road performance didn’t bother me. I’d buy one of these with a standard transmission.
I just bought a 2005 msport X3 with 65000 ks on the clock and it's lovely. I agree with 'Complaining Clarkson' about the bumpiness, but the car is quite beautiful inside and out. Also, as a 2.5 litre, unless I gun it, it's pretty good on gas.

I bought one of these, an excellent condition 2006, and I can´t wait to sell this thing. As much as I love BMW, I rather have a sedan, like I have always done. "Man, get into an SUV-SAV and you´ll never want a sedan again". Wrong, this looks like a shoe, has the aerodynamics of one, and guzzles gas like a drunk sailor drinks on his leave period. Can´t wait to get back to a nice BMW or C class sedan...
No-one who bought this car was not looking for an offroader. Btw my dad has early M47 one. Done 422 tkm, no engine opened, or transfer box. 6 speed manual ine. Done very nicely so far. It's to be fair, better made than an E53 (I have one) and a good daily driver. To be fair I am even surprised of this, since it's already 19y old car. Some others are on that age already on the junkyard. Btw that Austrian manufacturer is Magna Steyr, if I remember correctly. Not sure is this the reason it has been standing so nicely time and a sturdy machine... but I recommend it overally. Btw a basic model, no toys, only downside. Have updated couple of them though :) PS. Electric seat heating elements are burningly bad, to be fair.
My moms x3 is a 2008 and it not bad in off-road and has a panoramic sun roof
So I’m looking at buying one tomorrow that’s the 6 speed manual and tow package. I’ve heard good things about them and that they’re fairly reliable.
Watching this it seems like he’s only talking about interior design, which I could care less about, and that it got stuck in a muddy ditch, which I would never drive in because I’m not an idiot...

facts...m40i is where its at
I was looking for some thing about X3, and then i bumped in on this video.
When i want to test or buy a car, before test i first look in the manual of that car. And in manual of car clearly says that for off-road driving you should turn off DSC.
Second, only stupid full will try to go through track of other vehicle which is almost half meter deep, if he knows that his car has around 20cm clearance. Normal guy will try to get a middle section and left or right side beside track, or to say differently, to "ride" over already deeply cut tracks.
And then it jams the car, and not just that, it tries to pool it out with DSC on, and digs it even more further.
Then complains because he doesn't have leaver for activating four-wheel, it is problem for him that it is activated on press on button.
Now, i am wondering is it this guy really a full, or he is just playing that because he wants to do a commercial for Land Rover, how James Garci said.
It looks second, but then you need to ask your self how that could be, when this car is created in time when Land Rover was in ownership of BMW. Lot of concepts implemented in this car are practically Land Rover ideas. So, how this will help to Land Rover then?
This car is certainly not classic off-road vehicle (it is SUV), but it is not bad off road how he is trying to show it here.
So, what was on the end point of this? I think that Mr. Clarkson doesn't know that either.

I still cant believe i still use this car until this day. I have been living since I was 6 and now I'm 18 and my mom gave me this...
You were dead from birth up until 5 years old?
I have the 2007 3.0d msport and it is a brilliant car. 500nm torque 0-60 in 7.2 and handles so well on the road. Off-road not great but hey i dont drive round in fields all day.
The facelift had better interior materials and external bodywork tweaks.
Fair enough that car in the video looks cr*p (pre facelift model).
These days second hand x3s are such good value for money its unbelievable compared o say a Q5 or a6 estate.
I also average 35 mpg in the town. not bad for a big motor.
@Riles07 well they start new at 19k, but you can strip that down to 17k. The hi-cap 110 they have starts at 22k but if you rip off a few factory spec bit's 20k is maybe possible. 4k for the extra's, if you did the work yourself more than enough. It's about right

i love the X3
I have just purchased a 54 plate model with good mileage and service history... It's a beauty to drive. When you buy these SUV's, you have to forget about taking it off road. You wouldn't take an Audi Quattro off road, and you shouldn't treat this any different. It isn't an off-road vehicle. On the road I can agree that the ride isn't the most comfortable, but it doesnt bother me too much, and I have some modifications planned for mine anyway. It does go like a rocket, and you do get a big smile on your face when you flick it in to Sport Mode and hear the roar of the 3.0i engine. All in all, I think its a good, comfortable car. Its not going to win any awards for off roading, but if you want something to take off road, buy a Disco or a Hilux, don't buy and SUV.
Yeah you would take an Audi Quattro of road it is a fucking Rally Car. Audi's Quattro Models other than the TT and Sports Saloons so there SUV's would beat the Beamer the got Quattro Technolgy from the legendary Rally Car
I like the x3 and x6
