MousemanLV no new bmw diesel engines are even worse than the their gas engines because of all the bullshit they put on them to make Greta Thunberg happy
While this was a funny episode, I think it really comes down to how the previous owners maintained them. A major issue in the U.S is people simply don't keep up with the maintenance on their cars. Especially once these luxury vehicles start hitting their 3rd owners+, these owners bought the car for cheap, and didn't bother to replace or service anything that needed attention. Of course there are certainly issues with these BMWs in the mid-2000s, but how good or bad the car will be currently is all dependent on its previous history.
Danny Moreno Toyota’s start even with bad service is they are more simple damn cars. If you really really into vehicles and love your car you know. A Toyota doesn’t have thick oils, they are much simpler cars, they don’t have so much power so the parts don’t have to be so complicated. Even a Supra, Supras can’t have 1000HP without upgrading parts, the diffs, trans, oils have to be upgraded to withstand that power. BMWs mostly have ridiculous power and torque and in order for the car to handle that it needs complex parts and when the part is bad the car shuts off or gets in limp mode so it doesn’t kill itself even more. It’s bad maintenance not the car. Keep up with the car and if you can’t don’t blame the car blame yourself. This maintenance concepts applies to any BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Lamborghini, AM, Range Rover, Rolls Royce, Dodge V8s / V10s, Chevy Performance cars, Ford performance cars and even Lexus cars need to obey this concept that these noobs don’t get when you buy higher end vehicles.
My aunt must have the decent one It’s green and the same year with almost 200,000 miles and still going the biggest issue was the suspension but now it’s running like a champ
Yeah, I've owned 3 x5s. Loved all three, really safe cars in high altitude snow country, and traded them all in at 100k. No issues at all. None. I maintained them. I took care of them. Totally reliable. The car you featured showed all the signs of being ridden hard and put away wet too many times. Abused (by the previous owner and then by you.) But let me be clear. Having driven the BMW X5 for over 300k miles over the past 15 years, they are amongst the best cars I've ever driven or owned. But we all know they are expensive to repair.
the problem is the ignorant driver that doesn't know how to take care of his car...look at him screaming like a lunatic while peeling off any car can get damaged like that.
As a x5 owner, these cars are not for the faint of heart. If you have BMW software like dis, inpa and sss it’s not terrible. But a lot of really bad parts/design. The window regulator clips are a total joke, the nav lcd screen always fails, typical passenger occupancy sensor failure… my favorite is the heating pads in the seat that create hot spots that burn holes in the seat/burn you. That was a nice touch
@@jakestachel Maybe cheap Chinese replica parts (which never last, if they fit at all!) but certainly not OEM BMW parts. $100 seems to be the entry point for most OEM BMW parts, except for maybe nuts and bolts etc.

I own a 2004 X5 3.0i with 180k miles. It is solid. The sun roof still works...almost everything still works minus a few things. I don’t drive like this guy. Sure a fuse is out that makes the signal on one side flash double speed. My check tire pressure light is on (so what it’s just a sensor), and a internal door handle mechanism but everything else works. Sure the gray seats need be sanded and recolored link how to below). But it is 16 years old. My internal drivers door handle mechanism also did what this video passenger side handle did. Minor fix (parts on Amazon). I replaced the front brakes pads and rotors for $450 (parts & labor...again from FCP Euro and hired a guy from a shop and it’s a easy job he did off work). Just change the oil with synthetic weight as the manual recommends. Sure the axl boots tear, mine did too, but again I baby it how I drive and am still rolling fine. I’ve had no engine or transmission problems. Just the internal door mechanism (again easy fix), I changed the front brake pads and rotors, and replaced the battery since it was old (those are big and $160) but am now getting good use of mine. I don’t floor it and drive it hard like I bet this person does. I drive it so it lasts. I love the sun roof and back built in window shades which keep the sun off my 3 year old. It’s a beater that is working for me! And I don’t give a shit if someone bumps it or whatever. The freedom from stress is amazing because I once had a nice tricked out powder coated low profile rims car. Bunch of F ing stress protecting it. If you don’t have people giving you nice cars for completing high school that you trash and then call junk then maybe go earn the $ and pay for it yourself and then maybe you will appreciate a cheap car that does well if you do some basics. After that, I all but gave it away. It left me stranded and with all of my car knowledge, I couldn't even begin to figure it out. I lost roughly $3000 in about a week, to get it out of my sight. This was not the biggest mistake of my life, but it is certainly the one I kick myself over the most.

I was a victim of a 2005 BMW X3. I was in my early 20s looking for my first nicer vehicle. Besides minor issues such as tearing intake boots and valve cover gasket rotting, the steering angle sensor became permanently on and the transfer case / AWD system malfunctioned and was unfixable by anyone I brought it to. I put a new transfer case on it and it still was screwed somehow. The engine was ok 3.0 M54, did have misfire issues with coils and plugs needing replaced, burned a quart of oil a month, but constant problems that even seasoned metro specialists couldnt solve. Burned through way more money than I paid for it trying to fix it. Ended up cutting my losses and moved on!
A couple of years ago I had my heart set on buying an X5. Ending up finding a good deal on a Lexus LS430 with the Ultra Luxury package and was swayed away by all the luxury features. I think I dodged a bullet. That said, I still really love the X5. It's so gorgeous.
@@pearcey77 I had a 2006 Black Ultra Luxury edition for 5 years. It was about as perfect as you could get. Sold it for a Tesla Model S and still miss the Lexus.
Being a strictly German auto tech I can tell you that you certainly dodged a bullet. BMW's are junk. 99 percent of them leak oil. That's not an exaggeration. You'd think by now they'd figure out how to make a damn valve cover gasket that doesn't harden and leak after 30,000. PSA to everyone else: don't buy a BMW unless you're fully prepared to spend big money on maintenance reoairs.
Happened to my X5 too. Rear doors would jam shut if it was under 20 degrees f outside. Window regulators broke on sun roof and passenger window. Window was stuck down and bagged on the driver rear. All while gaskets were leaking and torn transfer case...causing over $8500 in repair bills. Then I got rear ended by a drunk driver in a Ford explorer and got totaled. Geico hooked me up lol.
I bought a 06 x5 4.4 with 200,000km that was then daily driven all year for around two years. Three door handles broke, one window stopped working, sunroof started getting stuck, started getting a loud humming noise when above 40 kph, water pump and belt broke while driving, then the last 6 months I started getting a random air suspension fault message on the dash and blue smoke out the tail pipes if it sat for a few days. But from beginning to end it always drove smooth and was a fun to drive. It had 4 owners before me, Canadian car from Ontario, no service history, paid $3400. Only had a couple minor issues when I got it.
@@floggyWM1 N54 has also been called the European 2jz. Now HPFP aside they are pretty good motors. What else about the 335? I've owned both a N54 and N55 version and both were great cars.
I've seen a few of the "this is how much I really make from RUclips" videos. If they're to be believed, with over 1m subscribers, regular family-friendly videos in the automotive category... Hoovie is likely making in excess of $1m per year just from ad revenue. He also does sponsorships, which bumps that up considerably. So a $1,000 purchase on a throwaway car which can have the mirrors yanked off and the cats chopped out to make a cool video, is not unreasonable
I have X5 E53 3.0i 2001 with 230k mileage. It is not so bad. it is not cheap car. I spent almost $50000 on it in 2001 Aug. The major reason I still keep this 22 years old X5 is snow road driving handling. 10 years ago a heavy snow storm with 20" snow on road and my whole family in the X5. We safely home and we saw a lot of cars abundant road side. This BMW X-drive is worthy safety feature.
@@chrisangelov1378 Which engine/trans combo do you have? I want an e53 so bad, is the petrol 3.0 with a manual the better option in terms of reliability?

I've got an 06 x5 4.4i. It's been the best summer ever. The only troubles I've had were poor tire wear in the year and poor brake pad and rotor replacement. So, I had all the suspension bushing replaced, and upgraded aftermarket rotors & calipers. 187k miles now. Not a spec of rust anywhere. Given what a new x5 v8 costs I'm keeping mine.
I currently use a 30d for towing. Changed water pump and thermostat because it has 140k on clock. Never had a minutes trouble with it. Brilliant work horse. A car is as good as the person looking after it.

Of course there are certainly issues with these BMWs in the mid-2000s, but how good or bad the car will be currently is all dependent on its previous history.
Thats the truth, someone who understands. My X5 cant relate to this x5 and its older and more miles.
Naah they suck if you compare to lets say a toyota. That will start everytime even with bad service.
Danny Moreno
Toyota’s start even with bad service is they are more simple damn cars.

Until people don't take care of their vehicles just like this one. They're great when you actually maintain them.
Creesic exactly... my dad drove one to just under 200,000 miles with 0 problem... he kept up with the servicing and surprise, it didn’t break (I am shocked that the timing chain guides stayed together though)
So the ultimate driving machine for about 6 days
@@Creesic Moot point. Every vehicle will last if you maintain it. The difference is that most other cars are way cheaper to maintain.
Hoovie: you should never ever ever buy an X5

Samcrac: hold my kove. The best bluethooth speaker on the market.
Wow, man, there's like millions of people who would drive that dream X5 for at least 5 more years! It was in a decent shape. In my country they fix all these problems with parts from other salvage vehicles and then sell it as a "perfect vehicle" driven only by grandma to the pharmacy store and back home! :)
