The poise that the Porsche showed at 5:32, when the back end came snapping back around, and the Cayenne just straightened out like it was on a rail. That was so impressive, I had to watch it a few times in a row. That's a well tuned suspension.
I understood your sarcasm but to be honest, neither of these "SUV's" are ever going to be taken anywhere but Rodeo Drive and back home lol. These are not vehicles that are ever going to see the mud anyway.
Calm down people. This was meant to be more fun than factual. That lap with the ML was hilarious with the seatbelts strangling them. Safety is always a priority but with all this crap on cars nowadays it takes away from them a bit.
Im guessing you are being sarcastic but I know a few people who expect their suv's to perform like a track car whenever they want to. This demand is becoming more noticeable with the newest cars coming out for example Acura suvs and now an electric mustang suv. Im not a fan of suv's but Im interested to see what these manufacturers can come up with.
It's hard for me to even place the Mercedes in the same category as the Porsche. The drive and look of the Cayenne screams "pure sports car on stilts".
You can disable to auto tensioner features of the seat belts and FULLY turn off all safety features on the ML. I am a Mercedes-Benz Tech so the info on how to do it is available to me. They should have gotten someone to do it for them. And no, you do not need any special equipment. You just need to know how to put the vehicle into dyno mode through the instrument cluster using the steering wheel buttons... Point is, they compared apples to oranges during this test.
Deafeats the purpose when an ordinary person can't just press a button, right? Irrelevant if you can disable it by tricking the system in to thinking it's somewhere it's not.
An "Ordinary" person can do it. Ordinary people reset their maintenance/service due lights all the time, correct? Well, dyno mode is in that same exact menu. The information is just easier attainable for me than most others. By no means is it impossible for people to get. I personally don't give out the instructions for safety reasons. People can do some stupid shit with the vehicle in dyno mode. If they happen to come across the instructions on how to do it, then so be it. I feel comfortable knowing it wasn't me giving that information out there. As far as the seat belt auto tensioners go, how to disable them is in the Owners Manual... I apologize as I don't follow the "tricking the system into thinking it's somewhere it's not" part. What is that in reference to?
MBTech Im a Technician for Dodge and can 100 percent agree with you on this. In or Hellcat and Demons there are pretty obvious buttons if you're trying to enter a certain mode. If you are "ordinary" then keep your damn hands away from even turning it into its full potential. You would think if they were going to test this beast they would have read into it more. I would love to work for MB.
how on earth is this a comparative assessment when they dont use the same driver.... very poor comparison by fifth gear presenters. try again using the same deiver and an acutal laptime not ur iphone....
The porsche ceramic brake made all the difference, even the track race because the driver could brake later than he could with the Amg also offers a ceramic brake optional extra should've included that in the merc to get a more accurate comparison. and I'm sure the merc would've one all these tests if they included that optional extra
Even with the Ceramic Brake option, the Mercedes wouldn’t stand a chance. It’s a got a great engine, but the rest of the car in terms of driving dynamics is rubbish!
The thing about AMG SUVs is that they aren't meant to go around a track, but off road. That is how the chassis of the ML and GL are built. The Porsche SUVs are meant for flat out speed, sure they may be able to do some off roading, but not as much as the Mercs. It's not built for that purpose. Both are fantastic cars
Proverbs 16:4 KJV Sure maybe it is, but I'm not complaining that it has more than enough power. They pretty much took the engines from the S63 and E63, and dropped in the SUVs. They probably didn't feel the need to change too much to the engines, as they have all. Plus, what's wrong with overkill? The new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has 700hp, which makes these seem like nothing haha. AMG is not just about speed with the SUVs, it's more about effortless power and torque.
Then you've never been on real off-roading. Would like to see you in 300hp suv doing off-roading in Czech Republic. Here we literally go so much uphill you feel like you're taking off and having 2+ tons car without ,,overkill amount of power,, you're just gonna slide down.
A Muhovic Never said other SUVs can't go off road lol. I was saying that AMG SUVs just give you the luxury of power for whenever you need it. As do the BMW M SUVs, and Porsche SUVs
+Mario Darnadi Why? Cayenne is a very luxurius car, with proper characteristics for sports car. You see when you say 'esp off' you mean it, whilste on the merc you don't have freedom. An AMG is supposed to be a sport car too and behave like one in a track!
This isn't a very good review in my opinion. Yeah they talk about the performance of the two but realistically speaking having looked at both of these SUVs to own myself, I will say for the money the Mercedes is hands down the better of the two. To find a Turbo S equally appointed with the standard options of the M63 is rare. You're looking at easily over $140k. $3900 for a moonroof Porsche!? Really!? And it's not even panoramic... Dollar for dollar the M63, performance wise, the Cayenne will do better on the track but not significantly which I find irrelevant because that's the last place you'll find either of these two.
After your test drives please let us know what you purchased. A year ago I had to decide on the Audi Q7, BMW X6, or Porsche Cayanne S. All vehicles were great but had to choose one. I chose the Porsche because it is a great all purpose vehicle and it's a treat to drive, never boring! :)
Dezz D Those are all great choices and in NO WAY am I knocking the Porsche. I love the Cayenne Turbo, my problem is I'm 6'5 and athletic. The Cayenne, especially the newest ones, are a tight fit so I lean more towards the spacious ML63. This review is ridiculous, they are scolding the ML for it's safety features on the track. Keep in mind the history of this SUV is a family shuttle with mild to moderate off-road capability. The Porsche comes from a family of sports cars and roadsters. They tried to highlight the Porsche's stopping power, but just lightly mentioned the nearly $6,000.00 brake package you'd have to buy to get it. After review of both of these, I went with the ML63 - Genuinely happy with my purchase :-)
I have both cars 957 Cayenne S and W164 ML550. Both cars are great but they have two different characters. Porsche Cayenne is a true sports SUV means it has a character of sport's cars, stock exhaust note, suspensions, tourqe, cornering, just almost everything, although I'm not too fond with the interior but I don't care I want that super SUV feels. Mercedes Benz ML is more of a big cruiser, more of of cruising SUV, and have better interior.
I have a Cayenne Turbo S I love it off the showroom floor 550 horsepower I have it tweet to 620 horsepower unbelievable straight pipe loud fast and beautiful
You can clearly tell, that they started breaking at the same time. But that makes no sense, because the merc was much faster to 100 mph. So its really dump that the Porsche started to break 10 meters behind the Merc. I doubt that the Porsche even reached 100 mph when he started braking.
Exactly this was rigged did you notice in the time trial the guy timing the Merc stopped the clock after he passed the Finnish line and the other guy timing the Porsche hit timer before he crossed the line that would more than make up the one-second difference. Bottom line the Merc is faster no matter how these guys try to spin it.
Yeah because you buy an SUV to go around a track... It seems like the ML63 was the safer car to drive and it was only a second slower with the safety measures on and a driver which was not a professional. (In contrast to the cayenne) If i had to choose i would still go for the Cayenne as a "family car".
Common sense, carbon ceramic brakes doesn’t help the stoping distance. The difference between it and the normal brake is the consistency of the stopping distance
For the 1st test it doesn't really make any sense because the Porsche was far behind the Merc when it started braking!! Not because he cheated but because it was slowest to 100 miles per hour!!!
I think the problem here is the ML was designed first and foremost as a SUV to do SUV tasks unlike the Porsche that had sporting pretensions from the very beginning. There's a difference between a beef burger that was meant to be a beef burger and soybeans that get compressed to imitate beef.
Karsten Pedersen Cayenne's better looking than the ML. Most large SUVs are less-than-gorgeous, though. The new Macan is a great looking thing, I'll take that over an Evoque anyday.
Spencer Cheng porsche makes the most elegant and refined styling, of course it´s not the most beautiful. I´m a huge Porsche fan, I will take any porsche before any other car and I know they are not the most beautyful but they are the most elegant and luxurious.
So, I bought one of these last year, you can completely turn the traction control off its called "Dyno Mode" stops all the silly and lets this puppy off the chain. coupled with a Eurocharged v5 tune puts down approx 650hp at the wheels. weapon of a car, I challenge 5th gear to re run this comparison again and setup the benz with "dyno mode: on.
So let me get this straight: In usual moronic british fashion, car "A" is driven by a professional stunt driver, and car "B" by a housekeeper dad. Car "A" has a $9000 ceramic brake option, car "B" is stock, but they make sure they compare stopping distance. Car "A" has PSM off, but they don't bother entering the code to truly disable PSM in car "B" (although this takes 2 seconds to do)? Car "A" seems faster and more fun to drive because it Drifts (when drifting actually slows you in the corner and is a bad thing for lap times)? Pick a country that is able to produce a dry track day in the summer (so pathetic great britain is OUT), and give both cars the same fair chance and the same unbiased PRO driver, and ML63 will win in all aspects.
Oh hoh hoh hoh,A C have you just triggered all 100% of British car enthusiasts. House keeper dad. Good god is this the funniest thing I have ever seen. So clearly British fashion is better than whatever fashion you run by. RIP in the chat for you, what a moron
The Merc was driven by non professional driver, went of the road, lack some of the options tha can be bought for no more the 5-6000 and still clock just 1 second slower then the Porsche. That's no brainer.
Why wasn't the cayenne turbo s used? I think it's only about £6,000 more then the AMG and has 50 more Hp then the standard Porsche and it's still I think 200-300lbs lighter then the Benz.
I have to state the obvious here, carbon ceramic brakes vs steel brakes in that first test is irrelevant , carbon ceramics only provide better "SUSTAINED" performance, which actually makes steel brakes better for the road as many carbon ceramic brake setups don't reach optimal performance until they have some heat in them !
Philani Hlongwa why buy an ML 350 when ML63 has nearly twice the power and no turbo fastest 4x4 naturally aspirated 4x4 ever made Hand built Engine it’s a no brainer I own one my mate has a Porsche My Mercedes is still faster
5:03 that drift though
That when I fully saw that he knows rally. I just broke out laughing.
Aw, man, me too
who said SUVs cant drift, that was poetry right there. i wouldn't try that with any other SUV though.
However
JPabloCN what about it
The poise that the Porsche showed at 5:32, when the back end came snapping back around, and the Cayenne just straightened out like it was on a rail. That was so impressive, I had to watch it a few times in a row. That's a well tuned suspension.
I agree. It has great tuned air suspension and 3 suspension modes. Comfort, regular, and sport mode.
It looked a bit wobbly
no@@zachaphina3140
5:00 DID I JUST SEE AN SUV DRIFTING???
hahahahahahaha
Porsche...
Oh yeah😂😂😂
I thought it would rollover for sure
naaaaaah, you saw a porshe drifting
6:15 that drift tho
5:02 the smile on Mark's face is priceless :)
Ezekiel Ramadan
Used Mercedes s65 for sale
I was just admiring that too... very nice!
Drive that ML63 on the road like that and you'll be glad of all that electronic safety system!
We finally know which is the better SUV on a track. What a relief. Now, what is the best super car in off-road ??
ML is, just not AMG version, but normal ML with the off-road package.
dacia sandero
who nyse one of these cars for off road comm on
Hilarious sir, hysterically funny indeed! Cant wait to see a Lambo vs Ferrari in a "mud battle"...lol
I understood your sarcasm but to be honest, neither of these "SUV's" are ever going to be taken anywhere but Rodeo Drive and back home lol. These are not vehicles that are ever going to see the mud anyway.
German cars rule
yup
sadwalk except vw golfs
Yeah its wild how superior they are to everything in their class. People who honestly pitch the notion of a Toyota being better make me laugh.
Nah. German cars are boring. American and Italian are cooler.
German science is the best in the world!!
Calm down people. This was meant to be more fun than factual. That lap with the ML was hilarious with the seatbelts strangling them. Safety is always a priority but with all this crap on cars nowadays it takes away from them a bit.

Somehow seeing a SUV going sideways is quite amazing
the title is wrong is not an ML65 its a ML63

This. Yes - the Merc would hammer this around the track if they knew what they were doing
You can go into option menu and turn off the seat belt feature in a 2012 its in the cluster menu.
we all know that carbon ceramic brakes don't help stopping distance on one stop but multiple stops.
I like this Tiff guy. He's proven himself to be quite entertaining and a great driver!
how on earth is this a comparative assessment when they dont use the same driver.... very poor comparison by fifth gear presenters. try again using the same deiver and an acutal laptime not ur iphone....
This comparison seemed to be for someone who would actually drive one of these vehicles; not a scientific test.
He drove the ml without even using those pedals once , the downshift and up shift generates insane power on demand
Curious if you had a tuned ml63 with all the electronics shut off how much better that time would be
What year was this Cayenne Turbo?, I prefer this body type to the old kind.
The porsche ceramic brake made all the difference, even the track race because the driver could brake later than he could with the Amg also offers a ceramic brake optional extra should've included that in the merc to get a more accurate comparison. and I'm sure the merc would've one all these tests if they included that optional extra

Yes, becouse they have only one option...
Do they have low range and water fording ability and good wheel articulation? If not they're just tall station wagons, why would you bother?
Which year is the CAYENNE?
Question.wheres the gear in this suv? I mean how do u shift it to different modes eg.Drive reverse neutral
but don't forget the Porsche was driven by a much better pro rally racer
Higgins is very good. But do you think Tiff is like your grandfather? He is old but he was a professional racer who even raced in F1 a few times.
They were both driven by pro racers. Porsche is just a better car.
Johnny Wrong because of 1 second faster lap time?
Cars should be driven by impartial person, so it will be fair. Porsche had ceramic brakes aswell, it is just a TV-show not a reality.
Ara J In second test it was just 1 second difference, but they have much more fun driving Porsche.
You have to got into dyno mode with the benz. Simple two button pressed and you enter secret menu in the display.
Exactly! Then you can drift.
How? I’d like to try it on mine

Thats something that annoys me with my Merc you turn the ESC off and it still cuts in ,when i say off i want it OFFF !!!
Put your car in "dyno mode", that turns everything off.
But you don't have a Merc.
In the description it says m65 which I doubt exists
5:03 That drift though!
Can you guys do it again and add in the BMW X5M and the Audi SQ5, please?
*Audi Q7 V12 you can't compare SQ5 with X5M and AMG haha

that drift at the 5 minute mark was beautiful
Two very good cars, both similar in many ways and both different in many ways. These are my top two 4x4's. Forget your x5's and range rooneys.
Sir plz make video on Mercedes-Benz gls 63 amg
Yeah because you buy an SUV to go around a track...
It seems like the ML63 was the safer car to drive and it was only a second slower with the safety measures on and a driver which was not a professional.

Baldur M. Tiff the non professional ex F1 driver? :/
That side on Porsche was so awesome 😲😲😲
6.15 perfect drift, bravo for Mark H.
man, if that ML had ceramic brakes option and Mark would have driven it, the ML would beat the helI out of the Porsche as$!
HAHAHAHAHAHAAHA u r clueless! The top Porsche wasn't even used (Turbo-S) and MBZ still lost HAHAHAHAHA!
Good review, the Gas is premium I suppose. Did you have any issues with the air suspension? Lots of comments about it.
WOW THAT DRIFT @ 5:05😍😍😍😍
And I promise not to jump in my cayenne and try to do the same thing
Maybe cayenne turbo S vs ml63 amg
the porsche looked so good doing this but im still getting the ml63 it looks and sounds better.
Nahhh the merc looks like a box on wheels. Porsche all the way!
Common sense, carbon ceramic brakes doesn’t help the stoping distance. The difference between it and the normal brake is the consistency of the stopping distance
5:03 wow that drift 😍😍😍😍
Holy f... I didn't even know suvs Can do that..... What in God's name....
Too bad by the time I can buy one, gas cars won't be relevant
Old old guy is quite alright I'd say
Oh yea! Tiff is phenomenal! Also love Sabine Schmidt!!
Did they turn on Dyno mode on Mercedes ML ? Turning off with ESP button does not mean all of traction/stability control will be turned off !!!
Damn Britts. I know it rains there a lot, but you should only use a dry track.
Sure wish they made an ML65 haha
I don't get it. Plz explain
chillinxxpaki69 65 is a v12 version whereas 63 is v8
Really? Why would you want more weight and less acceleration? Because that what you get with a 65, as opposed to a 63.
For lap time comparison it has should been the SAME driver - dont you know that???
For the 1st test it doesn't really make any sense because the Porsche was far behind the Merc when it started braking!! Not because he cheated but because it was slowest to 100 miles per hour!!!
I am not so much pessimistic, but ML63 AMG I will never get, maybe that model I can get when I am 85 years old.
And he is comparing ml 63 am with a turbo rather than doing it with a turbo s
Can't wait for F15 BMW X5 M.
Only if it had an e70 body. F15 has an ugly ass
I think the problem here is the ML was designed first and foremost as a SUV to do SUV tasks unlike the Porsche that had sporting pretensions from the very beginning. There's a difference between a beef burger that was meant to be a beef burger and soybeans that get compressed to imitate beef.
That break test was so discussed
Porsche just do everything better.
Apart from the styling.
Karsten Pedersen Cayenne's better looking than the ML. Most large SUVs are less-than-gorgeous, though. The new Macan is a great looking thing, I'll take that over an Evoque anyday.
No they don't. They are ghastly
Spencer Cheng porsche makes the most elegant and refined styling, of course it´s not the most beautiful. I´m a huge Porsche fan, I will take any porsche before any other car and I know they are not the most beautyful but they are the most elegant and luxurious.
Spencer Cheng Clueless.
I still don't understand why every comparison video uses the Porsche turbo and not the turbo "s". That's the comparable version from Porsche
rally I'm love the two
So, I bought one of these last year, you can completely turn the traction control off its called "Dyno Mode" stops all the silly and lets this puppy off the chain. coupled with a Eurocharged v5 tune puts down approx 650hp at the wheels. weapon of a car, I challenge 5th gear to re run this comparison again and setup the benz with "dyno mode: on.

I love my 500 horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Iti is the most fun SUV to drive.
Same 👍😝
carbon ceramics don't stop better, they just handle heat better...;
Which means better braking
1 second apart and they say they were world apart, not even considering the different drivers. They better not talk.

Why there’s Porsche Cayenne Turbo, when Porsche has the better sport version called Porsche Cayenne Turbo S ?!
bro in the ml63 forgot to change the downshift back to normal
Well how many pro drivers out there can drive like him . so merc is still the winner here being fast and safe for the amateur drivers .
3:29 Did he just say #ICan'tBreathe?
They're both worth about 10k today(2020).
And on the road where people will actually drive these cars?
Any points made in this video are moot since 99,999% of all owners of these cars will never drive them on a race track like this.
