Steady Wednesday on the BNSF - August 12, 2020 in Williamsfield and Edelstein, IL

We decided to start our fifth day in Illinois where we had concluded the previous, near the small town of Williamsfield. Traffic proved steady in the early afternoon, with trains coming at predictable times throughout. At about 3 o'clock, a small hitch developed in the otherwise mundane day, in the form of a signaling issue. Two consecutive eastbound intermodals faced this mysterious problem on camera. Both times, the signal initially displayed a 'clear' aspect before going dark suddenly, at which point PTC "went crazy" in the words of the crews, first sending the train into penalty breaking, then into emergency. After enjoying the trackside drama, meeting a kind local gentleman and depleting our food supply from the morning, we headed east to revisit a 2017 favorite in Edelstein. My father made a run for food at the Casey's in Princeville after I settled trackside, but unlike in Ancona, he didn't miss much this time. The evening wound down with a few more trains, including a local pointed by a triclops SD60M, a UP intermodal interchanging onto the Chilli, and some more BNSF traffic backdropped by a nice sunset. We headed back to base at dusk.
