      tuning is definitely not the easiest part of learning to play the violin! Try to always go under the pitch and then up. Try never to have too much tension on the string. If a string snaps though, it can also have to do with the quality of the strings. Many cheap violins have terrible strings on it. When I was young I snapped also some strings. Now everything is fine! If you need any specific help, let me know! Good luck :)

    The difference in pitch between the reference and string being tuned is called the beat frequency and it is accompanied by a rising and falling of the volume at the beat frequency. When the volume is constant the two frequencies match.

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  7 месяцев назад

      I hear that the beat frequency gets slower the closer you get to matching the pitch of two notes and it only starts beaing hearable if you are already pretty close. I didn't understand exactly, what you meant: You didn't mean, that the volume of the "beats" changes, right? Could you maybe elaborate, please. I think I get what you say, but I would bet, that if mechanically measured the beats would always be equal in volume in relation to each other right?
      It is an interesting topic similar to combination tones. Both are crucial pinpoints for the ears to improve intonation. I would love to read more about it!

    • @drmacshscphysics4494
      @drmacshscphysics4494 7 месяцев назад

      @@SimonStreuffViolinEducation You have almost got it, but what you actually hear is the combination of the two sound waves which interfere constructively and destructively because of the frequency difference. When the frequencies are the same you hear the combined volume and it is consistent. I often demonstrated this for physics students. Sound is a longitudinal wave which makes it a bit hard to visualise but if you imagine waves on a pool, which are transverse waves, when the peaks of waves from two sources are coincident the heights of the waves add and when peaks and troughs coincide they cancel. I would say to students waves that line up shine up, waves that interfere disappear. This fundamental concept is the basis of acoustics in venues, where you try to limit the reflections of roof and walls that may create dead spots or loud spots. If you take two of your tuning devices that generate sound, set one on 440 Hertz and one at 435 Hertz and you will hear a beat frequency of 5 Hz and you will hear the volume rise and fall. bring the frequencies closer together and you will hear what happens. I am 69 years old and love music. I have decided to learn to play the violin. I am a teacher and know that there is only one way that this can be a success. Regular routine practice with persistence and patience. I do not have unrealistic expectations but hope to enjoy the process.

    Thank you! My violin instructor never told me about the fine tuner. I have an electronic tuner and tuned by using the pegs, probably because that's how I did it with the guitar. Of course, I held my breath while doing so, because I could tell how immediately responsive the violin strings were to being tuned with the pegs. I shall use the fine tuner from now on.

    Hi, I'm about to get my first violin in a few days and I'm learning a certain genre of music in my university class that requires me to play in the FCGD tuning. My question is:
    1. What should I do if I were to change the tuning from GDAE to FCGD? Do I start on the fine tuner or the pegs?
    2. Will I need to adjust the bridge since it's technically loosening up the strings a bit(?)
    Really appreciate it if you could give a quick reply. Helpful video and tips by the way, thank you very much!

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  6 лет назад +9

      Hi and thank you for your question! Here are my quick answers:
      1. Depending on the position of the fine tuner, you can use those. Definitely use the fine tuner for the E-String! With DG and A you will probably also use the pegs and fine tune afterwards.
      2. Yes, watch the bridge, since it can lean backwards pretty easy, especially if you use the pegs. But most likely the change will not be very noticeable and nothing to bother about if your bridge in general is in good shape, position and form. Just keep an eye to the bridge.
      Generally I would suggest tuning the violin before the concert and not to change the tuning that radically during the concert. Otherwise you will have a hard time to stay in tune, because the violin is very sensitive to the change of overall tension and needs some time to adjust.
      That is also the reason why people who play with different tunings, like Paganini used to do for example, use different instruments for different tunings. So they better switch instrument during a concert than to change the tuning of one instrument. Good luck with the concert!

    I have pegs which have a barrel inside which turns independantly from the peg which gives more control when tuning and also prevents strings from breaking.
    I recently had surgery on my hand and this is the reason I have the Wittner pegs as they take the strain away from my hands. My violin alao has 4 fine tuners which I also use.
    My bridges stopped flying up in the air since I have been using these new pegs and saved strings!

    Very helpful! When I learned as a kid, I was taught to use the pegs but I hadn't played in many years. I got a new moderately priced violin the other day and immediately broke two strings trying to tune that way. I didn't really know how to use fine tuners before and I will have to buy a set before I attempt to re-string with my new, more expensive strings.

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  2 года назад +1

      Also take a look at the bridge and the nut if it has sharp edges. Otherwise you will ruin another set of strings. Sometimes in cheaper violins the grooves are not very well worked out and can damage the string winding.

      Deonilyn Gramo you can try putting some chalk on the peg, or pegsoap. But also check the winding of the string on the peg. It should end on the outer side of the peg, so that the string tension pulls the peg slightly inwards, not outwards. I hope that was clear.

    Thanks, Simon! I always wondered about the mechanics of the fine tuner. A couple questions...do you loosen the fine tuner almost completely (or completely), before each time that you tune by peg? And is it common for experienced players to tune completely by ear?

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  6 лет назад +5

      Elevenzies Hey! Yes loosening the fine tuner before you adjust the peg is a good idea! But if you tune already only with the pegs, the position of the fine tuner doesn‘t matter!
      Professionals usually tune the a-string to a outside source, other instrument f.e. And then tune from there on by ear. I will show that in a different video, I already filmed it! 🙂

    I realised very quickly how big an effect turning the tuning peg has compared to my guitar, I just back off my fine tuners as much as possible if I know I will need to use the pegs, turn it by fractions of a mm enough to get it within a semitone of the right pitch without going over, then use the fine tuners, I've heard I shouldn't touch the pegs as a total beginner, but I cannot afford a teacher so in order to be able to practice I NEED to be able to tune myself, even if it is out too much to use the fine tuners. I am fine with it taking a while to tune, if I break a string, need to take it to get replaced I suppose, but I can't take it to someone every time it needs tuned! Gotta learn sometime anyway!

    I tuned G just fine with the fine tuner but the others the fine tuner was all the way down so I couldn't turn it anymore to make the higher notes go higher.

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  3 года назад +3

      many possible ways: 1. check with an electric tuner/app, 2. compare to an other instrument or tuning fork. 3. have absolute pitch ;)

    I see some people using A = 442hz as standard. Wich one should I use?

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  4 года назад

      I prefer 442 too! It is up to you as long as you are not playing with an instrument, that has a fixed tuning like a piano for example.
      Everything between 440-446 is considerd to be a modern "Kammerton" If you go higher it get's awkward and the instrument and strings don't like the extra tension. There are many people playing with lower standard A's though. For example in "historical informed performance". It was even less unified back in the day as it is today, so the standard A can then range down to 315HZ, even 466HZ is found in some cases.
      For me 442 works fine! When I play with a piano it's mostly 443 though, because of the piano's tuning around here.

      Deonilyn Gramo but before you tune the g-string by ear, the d- should be in tune. But the A and E together are really the easiest to hear as a beginner I think

    Hi I got a question I have a violin and and the g string is very out of tune. I used my tuning all yet says the string I’m playing is a “c” or “f” any tips on how to tune my g string to a normal tune/tone?

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  5 лет назад

      Hi, probably your string is too low and you have to turn the pegs at the scroll a little. So first tune the string down with the fine tuner, so it is very low. Then go to the peg at the pegbox and loosen it carefully. After that you should be able to turn it some millimeters while pressing it inside of the pegbox again. You should reach at least the note "f" with the peg and do the rest with the fine tuner. Pegs can be fairly clumsy to use, depending on their condition. Keep in mind you have to work very fine at the pegs and constantly plug the string with the other hand, so that you don't go too high in pitch. I have another video about tuning with pegs, you should watch it, so that you understand how the pegs work. ruclips.net/video/m6UVfSg-kcg/видео.html

    So the A-string and the D-string must have ( sound) the same vibration so the D-string will be correct tuned? Right?

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  5 лет назад

      not the same, but one fifth apart. I have a video where I explain the advanced tuning methods. This video is just comparing your strings to an outside source basically.

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  3 года назад

      Every fine tuner is a source of possible rattling noise. If you can strip it down to the only necessary E-String fine tuner. I personally have two fine tuners. One for the A-String and one for the E-String

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation  4 года назад +1

      The E string reacts much more direct to the turning of pegs or fine tuners. How do you try to tune it? With an chromatic tuner? I can only guess, that probably your string is too lose and you have to adjust at the pegs until the string is close to correct and then do the rest with the fine tuners. But just a guess...
