    Just bought a 1997 zx6r that has seen better days, this is the perfect video for figuring it all out
    When I first took off the top airbox cover, my first thought was "there is no way I have to take off ALL these bolts to get the bottom box off"
    Imagine my happiness seeing this video to see it was only the two center ones

Great bike frightenedly quick, I had the prediseser the ZZR 600 that was good for 140 plus if you were feeling brave so so this one must be lighter and quicker. My dear friend, you made what appeared to be a complex machine look simple to repair. For anyone attempting to carry out maintenance for themselves would find a great benefit following your videos because you have a natural ability to easily explain each methodical step. Do you find the Haynes manuals helpful? I know I did keeping cars on the road whilst bringing up my family of four boys.

    • @TweedsGarage
      @TweedsGarage  Год назад

      Thank you very much Colin, i have used Haynes manuals over the years and have found them useful for giving you a general overview of the job being attempted ( they did have that classic line " now reassemble in the reverse order " which you normally found when you were sitting amongst a pile of disassembled machinery 😆). If they were available the American Clymer manuals tended to have more detail and better photos but the Haynes manuals were reasonably priced for the diy mechanic.

    • @TweedsGarage
      @TweedsGarage  Год назад +1

      Hi Josh, this bike is an earlier carburettor version with an external fuel pump ( next to the filter i changed) . Later injected models have a fuel pump fitted in the bottom of the tank and the pressure regulator is mounted on the top of the fuel pump housing assembly.

    Instead of using the screwdriver bit in the spark plug spanner, use a 17mm socket on the head, it might have to be a thin will socket?

    • @TweedsGarage
      @TweedsGarage  3 месяца назад +1

      There really isn't any space in there, i had the correct socket but it wouldn't fit, so being away from my workshop i had to use the tool kit box spanner ( i think they probably have a long tube box spanner for sticking them in at the factory, there really is no wiggle room )

    Hey there! I bought a 98 zx6r and i got into some problems after i changed out my camchain tensioner and my oil and filter… the bike wont idle properly when warm, it also just stalls sometimes, my idle adjuster knob is rusted to the max so i cant turn that up… and i was wondering where the hose thats coming from the back of the gastank goes to, maybe u could help me?

    • @TweedsGarage
      @TweedsGarage  4 месяца назад

      The hose from the back of the tank is the fuel filler drain so it just gets fed down the right hand side of the engine with the other drain tubes, i would advise trying to free the adjuster up ( or replace with a new one ) , with the tank and airbox off you should be able to work on it on the left hand side of the carbs.

    Hi, just had my carbs cleaned and balanced but my zx6r still running crap at low revs 🤷🏻 once on go it’s fine starts up no problem idle fluctuates slightly, maybe plugs or coils 🤷🏻
    I’m lost now.
    Cheers

    • @TweedsGarage
      @TweedsGarage  3 месяца назад +1

      First thing is to check you're running fresh fuel, modern unleaded starts going off after a couple of months in storage.
      secondly when you had the carbs cleaned did they just remove the float bowls and blow the jets out or actually remove the primary jets and clean them ( I show the location on the video but didn't remove them as I´d done them before, they can get coated inside with a crystalline lacquer left by stale modern fuel if the bike isn't used much , I clear these with one of those micro drill sets, not drilling then but just gently passing increasing size drills through until you get one the same size as the jet, then just give it a gentle twist to remove any debris).
      Thirdly a new set of plugs wouldn't hurt and do cause poor idle if they're a bit fouled up ( this was the fault with this bike ) .
      I would say you're coils are probably fine, they would be more likely to cause misfires at greater loading / engine speeds.
      These bikes need a good clear out on a regular basis to keep them running sweetly.
      hope this helps.

    Enjoyed that Allan, two observations on that breakfast though. 1:- No black pudding, I realise that a lot of you southern softies don't like the stuff. 2:- Horror of all horrors it contained a hash brown, they're an abomination and have no place in a genuine English breakfast. That's just my opinion though.
    I'd forgotten all about King Dick tools; I passed all mine on years ago when I could afford to buy new cars every three years.
    Had to laugh about the Haynes manual comments, about 50 years ago I had a series 2 Landrover and had to change the ball joints on the steering rods, the manual said "undo and remove the ball joints" It forgot to mention the oxy acetylene torch, a vise, a large Stilston wrench and a hammer and chisel, happy days, keep them coming mate...

    • @TweedsGarage
      @TweedsGarage  Год назад +1

      I know Allen, both observations correct, unfortunately black pudding wasn't an option and hash browns are a scourge of modern life .........but it was a top quality butcher's sausage and fried bread was an option ( that was chosen 😋)

  • @neiljohnson8589
    @neiljohnson8589 Год назад +2

    The Haynes manual I have for the ZX6R has an annoying cock-up. In chapter 1 (routine servicing), for the fork oil change, it tells you to refer to chapter 6 (suspension). Which helpfully shows you how to completely rebuild the forks, but also has the unhelpful suggestion: for fork oil change only, refer to chapter 1. Aaaaargh!

    • @TweedsGarage
      @TweedsGarage  Год назад +1

      Im afraid the new downloadable manuals ( which seems to be the way they are going ) are even worse, with huge swathes of information left out...... cherish the printed versions even if they are only occasionally helpful as the future is rubbish 😁
