ZX6R 2001 J2 Carburetor Balancing

- I am going to try to sync the carbs on my Kawasaki ZX6R J2 using a really easy synchronisation tool, the STE synchronometer carburettor flow meter. This should be a similar process for most 2 and 4 carb setups.
I have previously stripped and cleaned the carbs after the jets became blocked with stale fuel. I only attempted to sync them by eye that time so am certain they will be a little out.
J1 / J2
Here’s a link to the synchronometer I bought:

Love the videos
Thanks Austin
It had such a nice purr once you synced them 👌🏼
Thanks for noticing - it sounded even better in person.
Great video mate. So nice to see someone doing maintenance videos on this bike - it really helps! I was wondering if you were planning on doing a video on how to change the spark plugs? Im sure it would help a lot of us out!
Hi Luke, not planning to do that as did a couple of years ago - it’s not that tricky but they seem a long way down and you’ll need a universal joint. Thanks for watching!
Good video
BEFORE removing the fuel tank, fire it up and let it warm up to make the temp funnel not so much of a PIA mate. The 4 minutes it takes to remove it and remove the air box cover it will still be warm. I use a 1 Gallon self made carb feed for these kinds of things, syncing and testing, and it is much safer that releasing explosive vopors all around your shop with a running bike....FYI.
Thanks and good tip - sure, my method is a bit Heath Robinson and dodgy AF but it was well ventilated.
Before removing the tank, unscrew your fuel knob makes taking the tank off so easy
Ha, did I not do that? I usually do haha.
@bikenut seemed like it was a little difficult to maneuver sorry if I'm wrong bud! Just trying to help make life easier
Hello Mate, great video, I was wondering I have the J1 and was wondering if you can recommend me a exhaust for it, just the final end not the entire sistem. Cheers
Hi, thanks for the sub and glad you liked the video. The end can I have is a Micron and was on the bike when I got it. For me, I love the sound and with it being carbon fibre bodied it looks good on the bike too. It is road legal but not sure if it is supposed to have a baffle or not but it didn’t come with one. Its also much lighter than the standard one. It’s the only one I’ve tried, other than the standard one I used to throw on for the MOTs, so can’t really give you any other recommendations.
Gr8 vid. Just on the question u pose - I wouldn't use E10 in a older carb'd bike. Always use Shell Vpower or E5 in my DT and it runs gr8.
Glad you enjoyed the vid!
What type of gas is that in US?
@@yetihassyphilis5095 Not sure what its called in US - its the best petrol you can get in the UK rather than the cheaper version.
So I have the same tool and I just synced my carbs as best as I could with how late it was. But I cleaned the carbs out and then synced them anyway I noticed yours was at or around 3 where as mine was around 7 would you know why?
Interesting - if yours was idling faster then that would show a higher reading for sure or maybe I didn’t seat mine as well as you did but I thought I did. I’ll do mine again over winter anyway and I’ll check then.
Hi what is the gauge on the left of the speedo looks like a led screen is it a aftermarket fuel gauge ??
Great video thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Mark, it’s a gear indicator.
@bikenut where does the gear indicator plug into? Cheers Glen.
I have one of the same number of half turns of the air needle each carburettor takes.
Hi Gilberto - sorry are you saying the number on the Syncrometer is relevant to the half turns or are you asking me how many it takes?
Which model carb balancer are you using, SK or BK model
Cheers
Hi - just had a look at it says SK on the unit.
I'm thinking you would have better accuracy with 4 gauges. I would not sync my carbs with a single gauge. I still ride a 99 zx6r it's black purple mica and is a great lass!
I couldn’t agree more but for a quick setup it works well enough.
I just ordered this sync tool to use on my 02 r6. Do you recommend this tool or the usual carb sync tool?
I have never used the usual four tubes or dials type and this was my first time using this tool so I can’t really advise on that but it was really easy and no cutting of the vacuum lines as with the other types.
Where do you get your sync from guys?
@@JakeJohnson-hw8ew found it on Amazon
Found one now bud 👍
Anybody have any experience with ram air mod? Bike will fire, idle, then die after a bit. I want to sync the carbs but I’m assuming I need to figure out the air box first if I’m correct?
Interested to hear more about the “ram air mod” - what is that?
Where are the drain plugs for the carbs located? Also is there a better place to contact you?
Have a look on the back of the carbs - if still on bike. What are you aiming to do?
@@bikenut Trying to see if my bike has gas in the carbs
Is it running poor or not at all? If running poor stick some “Mechanic in a bottle” in the tank (as in this video) which will help with cleaning the carbs. If not at all it could be the fuel pump - check your fuses and also have a look at the filter to make sure it’s not blocked.
I have 4 gauges a lot easier to set the carbs up . Only thing I have to take the filter box off to plug in .
I have same bike.
for what number you adjust the carbs?
do you have a video how to install the indicator gears?
Hi, I just made sure they were all the same, I’m not certain the number was important. Once all the same just adjust your idle accordingly. I fitted the indicator years ago so no video unfortunately.
@@bikenut ok thanks.
If I understood well, the high number like you have was tree, you adjust for the same all?
I see comments here say gauges 4.
High number is better?
Hi, what they meant was that this would be more accurate by using 4 gauges or a vacuum gauge setup.
hi my friend where did you get the meter from?
Hi - there is a link in the description - Amazon
Great video pal.....did you enrichen the mixture when you went from standard can to micron
Thanks! The Micron was already on when I got the bike but I suspect the carbs weren’t tweaked. I’ve always fancied doing a Dynojet upgrade and adding a K&N filter though.
@@bikenut the reason i ask as the result slightly hung when on decelerate as mine did for 2 years until I richened it out using the rev drop method.....so much better 👍👍
what are the signs that carbs are out of balance ?
I would expect it depends how far out of sync they are but would certainly expect a rough idle. Not sure about other symptoms as I am no expert.
I noticed your air filter is supposed to be yellow side facing downwards.
Ha, that’s crazy! Thanks for that, all those views and you are the first to notice. Appreciated! I’ll make sure to replace that now.
@@bikenutI was just about to say that. Lol
Came here to say the same just don’t one myself and was like eh? 🤣
I had the 2002 zx6r a1p beast of a bike , stunning in green . Good video .. I was unsure of doing this part.. check my videos out
O carburador numero. 1 da esquerda,o primeiro ja vem ajustado de fábrica,ai vc ajusta os outros 3 igual o numero 1,o numero 1 nao tem parafuso de ajuste, serve de orientaçao para regular os outros 3 iguais
Thanks for your comment but I don’t think that is correct. With this carb, 1 and 2 are sync’d with the adjustment screw between them, the same then for 3 and 4. Once you have 1 sync’d with 2 and 3 sync’d with 4, you can then sync both pairs with the adjustment screw in the middle.
So that’s interesting to hear - I’ve no reason to doubt you and can not find any resources on specific Brazilian versions of the bike. Thanks for sharing.
Can I get a link for sinchronizer?
Certainly - this is the item I bought. Appears it’s still available - www.amazon.co.uk/Deluxe-Carburetor-Airflow-Latest-Rage/dp/B00CMC57R0/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?crid=2Z7XQVFOILK3K&keywords=carburettor+synchroniser&qid=1643064072&sprefix=carburettor+sy%2Caps%2C76&sr=8-9
@@bikenut thank you.
Как прибор правильно называется ?
The link to the item is in the description. It is a Synchrometer made by STE
@@bikenut спасибо !
