    Love the demo shot! Very fun and original in the light review community. I also like how you open your reviews with your demo. it creates a strong credibility for you as a reviewer that knows how to not just play with the gear but get good results from it. It’s the cinematographer’s side of the equation that’s interesting to me with your reviews, whereas a gaffer channel like Andrew Lock’s Gaffer & Gear is great if you just want to geek out on detailed specs, menu options and DMX capabilities.

    Thanks for making this. Hugely helpful info especially comparing it to the M18. If their numbers are true with the fresnel it would punch well above an m18 which would be wild. I’d be interested to see your results with metering it with the fresnel. I plan on getting one once released with my only gripe being there are no dimmer controls on the ballast. I could see that being problematic for when the light is high up on a stand. But with that kind of firepower at that price can’t really complain too much. Thanks again for this review!

  • @boasol

    Nice video. Would love to see a follow-up with a couple of things. I'm surprised that reviewers don't do a simple comparison test, which is taking a standard size reflector like a 6x6 ultrabounce, filling the light to the edges by moving the light back and forth to deal with beam spread, then doing a 3m measurement from that. It deals with hotspots then, averaging the illumination out.
    #2 is the app. I bought Nanlite products in November on the promise form Nanlite that they will have an app and they are "working on it". Keep in mind that much smaller companies, like Luxli, have had a great app for years for their lights. Even my cheap $150 Neewer RGBWW panel has a basic app. So, I lost faith in Nanlite / Nanlux because it is July, and I dislike using my 9 Nanlite lights due to that. Their "remote" is also a joke.Being forced to buy, learn, set up a DMX system just to operate one light high up on a stand, which is what you typically do with a light of this power, is unacceptable.
    People, stop buying their broken promise and excuse for not not having an app yet. Even a basic one, just replicating the controls on the unit, plus a colorwheel / mixer, as a version 1, would be fine.Almost EVERYONE else has that.
    I don't know about the Nanlux, but My Nanlite products are not acceptable below 30%, with way too much obvious color shift. I am talking about obvious on screen and eye, not even on a meter. They also cannot hit neutral (zero) on tint, due to when you are (-1) it is really magenta, zero is off, and (+1) is really green, and they are so far off on tint at zero, that I am constantly having to MANUALLY adjust the tint at almost every kelvin setting. Their larger Pavotubes are duper off, and don't even have a tint control, so I have to wrap gel around them to just have something close to neutral. CRI / TLSI is meaningless in their case.
    My understanding is that this unit has a proprietary reflector mount due to size of COB. Do they have an affordable generic speedring for softboxes and Octos, or do they force you to buy double of what you already have?
    I find that Nanlite and many of their users are more concerned about how the unit looks, and accessories, and output, versus actual color and temp setting accuracy, skintone, and how it tracks at power levels. No point in having 0.1 unless it can dim that far down and still have some usable color. A bit of drift at an extremely low setting is ok, as long as easily correctable I find that Nanlite fakes their 1%, and it is much brighter than that. My Luxli Cello, when at 1%, is super dim, like you could use it to match nighttime or very low ambient. Nanlite cannot go that low, even though they advertise it. I wish reviewers like yourself would be a little harder on the products, like Gaffer & Gear channel is. And even they miss some critical real life usability things in terms of color accuracy and neutrality on a sensor.
    Hope this helps for a part 2 review and future reviews.

      I don't understand the reflector test, where do you take the reading?

    • @boasol
      @boasol 2 года назад +1

      @@martinc12 take a section of wall, say 6'x6', and fill that area with one light, by moving it closer or farther. Be consistent in how the falloff is dealt with, so both light circles are similar size. Do a reading at a specific distance from the bounce source, say 3m, a common standard with output listings. Then do the same with the second light. The distance from light to wall / bounce will likely be different, and that is fine. The difference in output at meter position, after the wall "mixes" any hotspots, provides a "true" output strength, equalizing the reflector designs, hotspots, etc. This also provides a realistic comparison with shooting through diffusion, or bounce. It also evens the playing field for marketing BS. Let me know your findings when you start applying a standard such as this between lights.

    When you say it has Lumen radio through Timo Two does that mean it has Lumen Radio built in, or you have to add a device into the dmx port to get Lumen Radio control

    For which settings would you recommand the M18 and for which the Evoke 1200?

    • @MichaelEgglerFilms
      @MichaelEgglerFilms  3 года назад

      Personally, I‘d choose the Evoke in most situations. It‘s way more flexible, faster to setup and adjust and I just prefer to overall handling. Maybe one could make a case for the M18 if the rest of the lighting setup is ARRI too. But at this point it‘s more subjective preference and maybe brand loyalty😉

  • @DanielRentzsch
    @DanielRentzsch 3 года назад +4

    Could you tell us something about the Evoke‘s noise level? Putting aside that running big HMIs often require a generator especially on outdoor locations and that their power supplies are noisy, too - the advantage of the compact design and low heat development of LED fixtures become less important once they produce a level of noise that makes them unusable in sound sensitive indoor shooting environments. Thank you for the review!

    • @MichaelEgglerFilms
      @MichaelEgglerFilms  3 года назад +2

      It‘s fairly decent to work with, but not completely silent. There is an option to turn off the fans, but the light output will drop drastically. I‘d say it‘s an equivalent to the „hiss“ of the M18 (which changes as you go through frequency settings). Realistically, you‘re probably gonna use the Evoke at a distance of > 3m away from the mic and that should be doable.

      Sure thing. Besides some digital light volume (and rotoscoping the ladder of course in the UFO shot), all the light is coming from the Evoke. It‘s absolutely crazy what output you get, specially with night scenes.

  • @tylerlarson9772

    I'd like to see the spread of each light and then take a meter reading. I've heard other LED's claim to be nearly as bright only to find out that they were comparing full lensed spot on the LED and full flood on the HMI.

    • @MichaelEgglerFilms
      @MichaelEgglerFilms  2 года назад

      I measured both lights at the same spread. Basically the Evoke without the Fresnel (just the reflector) and then matched the M18 to it and voilà.
