I completly agree with Nick when he said "I like it so far but..." Had exactly the same feeling some years ago when I spent a whole lot on cameras. They are great tools but it´s hard to recoup the money along the way if you´re not a rental house with a ton of projects on the window. I mean most times with a single film or TV the gear kind of pays itself but then you´re forced to use the same equipment on every shoot afterwards beause It is what you own but not necessarily the best tool for the job. So in the last five years I´m leaning more on getting a good cheap all terrain camera (FX6, Ursa 12k, Red Komodo, Ronin 4D) something that is manageable financially and can be easy mantained and replaced in a couple of years when something better comes along and delivers great image quality for the price. I think ultimately is better to invest the money in front of the camera than on the camera itself. I prefer to spend those $150K on an actor that can get my picture or tv show distributed and sold to a major network, than on the gear itself. But hey!... Maybe I´m just a cheap old bastard.

Worked on a number of shoots where the Alexa mini has been used as the main cam. Tbh it's only worth buying if you're looking to rent it out, DPs should be known for their style and trusted by the director to visually capture the story no matter the tool, plus most DPs want to photograph the story on film and only because of budget they have to shoot digitally. They want to have the freedom to experiment with other camera systems and not locked in to the one they own. Had the opportunity to by an arri flex 16sr3 and kicking myself for not buying to rent out as it was such a good price.
My short was shot on a Mini and the DP had a thriving corporate video business, but had some down time on the weekends so drove up to Sacramento. Great memories of that short.
Damn, nice breakdown on Arri. Really makes you appreciate what makes them that much more crazy. Can really feel why Nik is so hype and enthusiastic about it.
Shows how much work it takes to get skin tones to look decent on Sony still. Saw a comparison between an Arri LF, FX3 and C70, the Arri/C70 were so easy to get what you want.
'Saw awhile back an organization's hard-fought demo effort to 'break' and re-establish new projection standards. Followed immediately by Arri's demo from this camera... Couldn't help but imagine that the results broke the former presenters hearts. The specs in this case do not lie, and the layout is really well planned. It's really quite remarkable that this is attainable at all.

great video, and I apreciate the content and your talent as youtuber, but I can't stand on sentences like, is the most cinematic footage I have ever seen straight from camera. I don't understand the term "cinematic" and the fact that the footage is coming from a camera used in nearly every film set, doesn't automaticly convert the footage in cinematic. Footage is cinematic (no matter the camera) when lighting, actors, atmosphere, etc all together invoque an emotion.
Not really, there are sitcoms that evoke emotions and no1 is trying to recreate that look or calls it cinematic. I do agree that saying this is the most cinematic image straight from camera is a load of garbage. When youtubers use the word cinematic they are just talking about the look of the image. In reality however cinematic means movie like which refers to all aspects and not just looks.
I really what love to see that Arri side by side with an a7siii for example under the same lighting condition etc. as in 4:04 to see a difference. Yea it looks good at 4:04 but what does an a7siii look like under that same exact condition?
That's a nice rig, but an insane price. And sadly it will be worth little in a few years, not the best move to bank the house on... Hopefully it will generate more big budget clients to compensate... The best example I know in respect to cameras was the Zacuto Shoot Out years back where the mighty little Lumix GH2 beat out all the big shiny Cinema cameras, including the Arri and Red in a blind test, chosen by some of the top industry pros, including F.F. Coppola... It really put it all in perspective. It's what you do with your tools that will stand or fall in the end. Lightning is really the most important aspect in image quality. Good lighting will look good on an iphone, where even an Arri can't save ya from bad light.
you buy it, you pay the finance, the insurance and still want to make a profit. Unless you have it working 200 days a year like a rental house one would you have to up the price vs a rental house to get a return. But think of what the cinema cameras will be doing at that time - you can’t replace the benefits of a large sensor. Look at how sensors are used on some many things these days :)
Prosumer cameras do have a quality that is close to it. A pro dp and colorist can match a a7s or black magic camera to arri no problem. It wont be on the same level but 99% of people would not be able to tell unless its side by side.
Proof that sensor size is not everything and actually far from it. This is a super 35 sensor camera. For anyone still believing full frame is better because it’s bigger it’s absolutely NOT true. What’s far more important is dynamic range, rolling shutter, iso performance throughout the cameras entire ISO range, and overall how the sensor and processor render a final image. QUALITY OVER SENSOR SIZE.
