@@gerardfinnigan1539 Culture wars = American bs based on the Seven Mountains doctrine. It's an American evangelical thing. Not sure if people are familiar with it. It's the idea that they need to control 7 aspects in society: business, government, family, education, media, religion, arts/entertainment. They treat these fields as battlefields against their opponents and think that dominating these fields = control over society.
And you can see that in one way or another culture war bs comes back to these fields. Business? DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and woke companies. Government? Everyone is a communist. Family? Ban LGBT families/abortion. Education? CRT (Critical Race Theory) and "sexualizing" children. Media? Don't trust the lefty MSM, only trust weird, obscure conspiracist sources of information. Religion? Make the 10 commandments mandatory in schools (Louisiana just did this) and Islam is bad. Arts/entertainment? New video games are woke, Taylor Swift is bad, Hollywood is woke, everything is woke.

The fact the Tories addressed the third most important issue, but not the first or second, given their appalling record on both over the last 14 years, was one of the reasons they suffered their heaviest defeat ever. And still they don't understand why they were hammered. If this Tory MP is an example of the 121 who are left, their Party is probably in a worse position than even the biggest Tory pessimist would suggest

The vagaries of FPTP are to blame here, it's that simple. The argument for PR is for another time and place, but it needs to be addressed as some point. It seems the public have short memories when it comes to Tory failures. I endlessly hear complaints about how we shouldn't trust Labour because of their past failures, going back to the 1970s government.

Just to add a bit more info, Hollinrake studied Physics at Sheffield Hallam University (1981/3), but failed to complete the course. If he'd done that nowadays, he'd have no professional qualification in the subject to show for it, as well as being saddled with a large student debt need repayment. So going into the estate agent business was possibly a safer bet...

It has been a good 4 days. The past 14 years are forgotten. Let’s have another election next week. All is forgiven. The Tories should never be seen in government again.

A Tory wants to be trusted again. Hmmmmm. Is this the same tory who supported Porridge Johnson, voted Leave, resisted the call to pursue Mone and said that Truss was 'challenging the status quo?' I wonder why his party did so badly?
