    Unless you're voting for an independent, you're more than likely voting for the party, not the individual candidate.
    Defections should trigger an automatic by-election, then we can see if the constituents want the same candidate in a different party, or someone else.

    The tories are set for a long period in opposition and they are struggling to find a coherent identity. Many of the seats they lost to the libdems will be very difficult to get back and lot's of the people who voted reform were just pisses off with what they thought Labour was, but as time goes on and Labour deal with the dysfunction the tories left behind, many of those reform votes will return to Labour. Especially if a coherent response to immigration is put in place. And if reform party members keep showing their own interests are financial and not really about actually doing anything meaningful.

      Absolutely agree.
      Nothing better than seeing the tories shrink further, but If they seriously want to start the process of turning it around, lurching further to the right won't be the answer. Labour's success in large part because they have moved back to the centre.

      @glennaustin37 culture wars and big personalities can win power, but eventually, the lack of genuine plans and competence gets found out. And inevitably, this leads to the grown ups getting back into power. I wish we could end this cycle, but unfortunately, humans are easily bored and the right wingers will fund a new personality to get behind with grand words and the sheep will follow. But for now, we have a chance to fix the mess and I'm grateful for that.

    The real question is whether the Conservative party will split into 2 parties by Christmas. And, if that were to happen, it would raise some interesting constitutional questions. For instance, who would the official opposition be.

    • @DoubleDragon539
      @DoubleDragon539 Месяц назад +1

      The 2nd largest party becomes the opposition, which could well be the Lib Dems, if the Tories split into new successor parties, unless one of those successors had more MPs than the Lib Dems currently do.

    • @glennaustin37
      @glennaustin37 Месяц назад +1

      If she thought Reform had a chance at power she would be off like a shot. Assuming she want's a long career in politics the rational approach would be to remain with the Conservatives and spend the next five years lobbying to build a support base amongst the Parliamentary party in the hope of becoming the leader after next. Of course that would be rational and we are talking about Cruella.

    The idea that what is left of the Conservative party can be united by ANYONE is for the birds. Time and time again we have been told that the Conservatives are "broad church" ... what we see under the Conservative banner today isn't a single party broad church, the extremes of views are so diverse there isn't hope in hell's chance of them uniting. There are some of the remaining Conservative MP's who have their finger on the pulse. The problem is that the majority of car carrying Conservative members are detached from reality and any choice made by them will be a route to oblivion, continuing the direction of the dreadful choice they made for Truss.
