AMS is an acid blend of both Sulphuric acid and Hydrochloric acid - basically everything that stainless doesn't deal well with in constant contact as the passive layer on the surface is defeated. Basic detail here : www.bssa.org.uk/faq.php?id=9
Hey harry! I’m chiming in from USA and Blichmann engineering has a great pilot system. I do not know though if they have a system for your type of electricity you guys have over though. Anyways thought I would just chime in.
Hi Harry, I use ammonium sulfate in granular form on the farm all the time and it's pretty agresive on fertilizer bins and other kinds of equipment. It also tends to draw a any moisture from the air but it should do anything to stainless steel. Maybe that spring wasn't that stainless after all. You could test it with a magnet it shouldn't be magnetic if it's propper stainless steel.
Had a powell brewing 3 tier system for 7 years and it's going strong. The quality looks even better these days but it's decent kit and he's a good bloke.
Just a question on the placement of the chiller plates as I might be missing something. Since heat rises and cold falls in a liquid. If you put the plate at the bottom then it will be chilling the already coolest part of the tank. Doesn't it make more sense to leave it at the top cool the warmest part that will then sink down to be replaced by the warmer liquid? Thereby circulating and mixing the liquid to a degree for a better overall average temp.
Suspicion is quality of the stainless in the spring. I have noticed that in stainless I buy for marine use, some is stainless in name only! Also, Sulphuric acid has a tremendous affinity for water and is extremely exothermic in its reaction when mixed with water. The heat plus the acid reacting with impurities in the stainless would breakdown the spring. Can you use a simple plunger draw system like a hypodermic uses? Enjoying your progress! Been following a while! Good Luck!
Alright chap, Powell brewing is where I would go for a cheap 3 pot set up. Ian is good bloke Harry, keep up the good work . Christ tebbutt , Carlsberg process engineer.
I would have a chat to Mr Lard (Mark) too, sure he will be very generous. He can do loads of customisations but suppose you would like to do a lot of that yourself.
Can vouch for brew builder. Got one of their conicals & a few other bits. Really happy with them. Lusting after their insulated mash tun atm. For parts like sight glasses and brew pumps, most of the UK shops seem to sell ones from china so I tend to check AliExpress first for those sorts of bits. For fittings, check out brewpi. Their bread and butter is their brewery control software/controllers. But their stainless BSP fittings (particularly the ones with recessed gaskets) are the best I've come across. They also do some top notch low watt density elements and really good quality herms coils.
With the chiller plates in theory the cool liquor at the top will sink to the bottom as its chilled with the warm raising to the top and will circulate. So I think that plate will be fine where it is?
Brewtech gear is cheap and gets the job done. I use their 20gal kettle (holds just over 80l) and the 17gal conical to turn over 60l batches. Not sure if the mash tuns are worth it though as I still use a converted keg as mash tun. If you are happy with a bit smaller batches however an all in one system like brewzilla 65l is a no brainer IMO.
Oh Spike Brewing in the U.S is a good source for homebrewing complete kits. But shipping from the U.S. to England is pricey. They build what you want. No more no less.
Checkout powellbrewing.co.uk/ Ian is a really decent bloke and will do a good price. His pots are German made. If you want to see one or two let me know, I'll drop down with a pot or 2 and also the pump he sells. All the best and Mash On!
I always enjoy your tunes mate, but that was an awesome new tune for the intro! The affect that acid had on the spring was nuts, I’m glad you are always super careful with PPE around that stuff. I was disappointed not to see your finger stuck to the cooling coils...something I would do. I’m sure you will have the leaks fixed in no time.
Not sure that this will be much help to you being in Australia, but I'm sure you'd be able to fabricate something like it if you want. Check out cheekypeakbrewery.com.au/tri-clover-edition-150l-3v-double-tip-nano-brewery-full-electric-lpg-gas-support for brewstand design - they have a few vids on it on RUclips too.

Bingo. I think we have a clue.
Glad to see you working on those fermentors at last. Been wondering what was your plans with them.
+1 for Powell brewing Harry lad 👍
Over the 45 years that I have been brewing I've found the best test kit is the one you design and build yourself. NZ Brewer
Have you ever thought about building a distillery so stu can make his own Gins?

Lardy at Brewbuilder is a star, he does brewpots with triclamp already welded on.
Seconded! Highly recommend Mr Lard.

Definitely 304 stainless. the liquid was 18% sulfuric acid.

Whoever put those cooling jackets on does not show the care you do...those were some manky joins! No doubt you'll soon have it sorted. Cheers!

It is a problem of the plat being above the level of the liquid. The tanks have a good head space.
@@harrybrew69 ah! That makes sense then. Suppose ideally a top to bottom plate would be nice. Thanks for the explanation.

I’ve had a 50ltr Powell kit for around 3 to 4 years and it’s still going strong

Is there anything you can’t do Sir. Can’t wait to see your pilot brewery. I will be trying to replicate it. Emphasis on try.

No good if it is not in the liquid though. And using the other tanks as a reference that may well be the case.
Why not a 30l water urn wired to a stc to mimic a robobrew or grainfather and use a brew in a bag setup be easy and cheap and wont take up much room
Also there are bigger urns ive seen guys running 65l ones

Steel is a composite of iron and carbon, so I'm assuming the carbon converts to carbon dioxide and iron to iron sulphate and water
Stainless? I thought the percent of carbon was less than 1%. with about 18% chromium and 8% nickel?
@@harrybrew69 Yeah, true; just googled it. Try searching for acid-transfer pump
Would the one with the big cooling plate be for lager?
Only if I put a lager in the tank :)
Восхищаюсь твоими достижениями! За несколько лет построить своими руками пивоварню! Уважаю!
When you clad those tanks, you should name them with plaques, where the numbers are. Numbers are boring.
