This is wonderful: Serkin at his best. It's wonderful to hear him taking such joy in performing. In later years, his nervousness seemed to constrain him. But he gave amazing performances even into his eighties - I recall a stupendious Diabelli variations. And there is a live recording of the Chopin etudes Op 25 which is marvellous, musically and technically.

This was Rudolf Serkin's return to Vienna after leaving Germany and Austria pre-WW2 due to the anti-Jewish restrictions. With his father-in-law Adolf Busch (as Aryan as they come) and a revered top-class violinist, they went first to Switzerland and then ultimately to the USA - the rest was history. The warmth and eagerness of his welcome (a 2nd bow required from the audience before the concert even commenced) shows that they realised what they had missed. His wife refused to go back with him to Germany on concert tours; she was, as Rudi explained, "too German to forgive". In particular with this performance take note of of the immaculately performed long trills.

At the start I thought it might be the Academy of Music in Philadelphia.
The title says "Vienna Festival" and it's the Vienna Philharmonic. It's not the Academy of Music, but it's definitely Philadelphians in charge!
Is much better this recording. I don't like the recording of Serkin of this Concerto with Abbado. This one is fantastic.
