Never too late. At 72 I just discovered Arrau today, listening to his Trout with Julliard, then the Appassionata, and now this. Magnificent artist! And his Mozart - superb!

Yo le conocía, porque es uno de los pianistas más famosos de la historia reciente, pero no le había escuchado realmente, porque hasta la llegada de youtube no ha sido posible escuchar con tanta libertad a tantos maestros del siglo XX, como para darnos cuenta de su inmenso talento. Muchas de estas maravillosas interpretaciones, quizá la mayoría, no están disponibles en disco. De hecho, he buscado cds comerciales para comprar y no hay gran cosa.
@@gmsgdiazdiaz353 Lo mismo me pasó.Yo sabía que era un gran Maestro del piano.Pero nunca me imaginé que tan grande fue.Arrau está en la categoría de los grandes virtuosos.Y lo bueno de el que dejó muchas grabaciones.Las 32 somatas de Beethoven aparte los nocturnos y etudes de Chopin y mucha obra más.
Será el único que hace lo que está escrito? en el glissando de octava de Waldstein, Beethoven. Técnica, y disciplina.
Here is perhaps one of the very best pianist ever known interpreting Beethoven. The second movement makes me cry. It is so spiritual. What a terrific way to end a week! Thanks Claudito, for ever. I'll see you in heaven!

And seeing who was considered the best orchestra conductor in his time, seeing him applaud and hug with great force and joy, makes us understand that the performance of who was considered the most complete pianist of the 20th century, was masterfully executed... genius Arrau .

At the end of th concert, Leonard Bernstein shows openly his limitless affection and admiration for Claudio Arrau´s talent, experience and stature as human being... From 37.00 to 37.17, without any restriction or shyness, Bernstein shake hands, embrace warmly (twice) and kiss Arrau in both cheeks, telling him friendly and joyous words in both ears and demonstrating openly his happiness of playing together... Claudio Arrau, a very shy man, is overwhelmed and his reaction is a little surprised and almost awkardly... Arrau was 15 years older than Bernstein, and in the 1940's he was already considered Beethoven´s greatest piano interpreter in History when Bernstein was only an young orquestra director, the first great conductor born in the USA... Other famous conductors in the USA were foreign born, as Toscanini (Italian), Stokowki (British of Lithuanin and Polish ancestry), and Ormandy (Hungarian)... Coming back to Bernstein and Arrau, both were deeply Humanist people, involved in human rights campaigns... This concert, for example, is for Amnesty Internacional... Bernstein and Arrau died within months of each other, at the beginning of the 1990's.
Estudie piano en la escuela Superior de Música en 1969 en las calles de República de Cuba # 92en la Ciudad de México siendo mi maestro el Profesor Salvador Ordoñez ex director del Conservatorio de Música en la Ciudad de México en la época de la segunda guerra mundial. Renunció y dejó Mexico dando conciertos en el mundo debido a que el presidente de México en ese tiempo Gral. Manuel Avila Camacho prohibió tocar música alemana debido a la guerra contra esa nación. Obviamente no se podía tocar Beethoven entre otros. El profesor Ordoñez me daba clases de piano y de historia cada vez que asistía a sus clases. Recuerdo me contó que el era amigo de Claudio Arrau considerándolo el mejor pianista de la época. Una vez vino Arruu a México a tocar un concierto y le habló por teléfono pues tenía dudas sobre un pasaje del concierto que iba a tocar y le pedía que si tenía en su casa la partitura para verificarl. El profesor Ordoñez accedió sin problemas. Se vieron y recuerdo que me comentó que en realidad no había error en la interpretación. ¡Tiene una excelente! memoria me dijo.

Saw him perform this concerto many years ago. Amazing experience.
All his talent put aside, (there are many talented musicians) Arrau comes from a line of teachers going back to Czerny and thus Beethoven. Many generations of luminaries have transmitted a great part of this beauty through him as an arcane legacy.
In order to play this way the 2nd mvt one must be an immense pianist and live his whole life for the music. Such a slow tempo but breathtaking interpretation, keeps you stick to youtube from the 1st to the last second
There was never a pianist so complete as Claudio Arrau! There is not nowadays and perhepas there will never be another like him! He brought to the last consequences the musical, architectural, artistic and emotional realization of a musical work of a genius. He is an unique and unrepeatable pianist and interpreter. And what a superb pianism!

Agreed. I saw him twice in Melbourne (Australia) during the 1970's - Brahms 2 and Emperor. What cannot never be understood from recordings is the incredible presence, power and depth of tone he coaxed from the piano. I've heard live Pollini, Gilels, Richter, Rubinstein, Berman and others - Arrau was the greatest!

Let's not forget that when Arrau was in Russia, Emil Gilels said, after witnessing Arrau's performances of the Brahms concertos, that he (Gilels) would re-study all the works of Brahms under the light of Arrau's interpretations of this composer. And we must remember that Arrau won twice the Liszt Prize in Hungary, when he was sixteen and seventeen. This Liszt Prize was not given since already 40 years before Arrau's visit to that country!

The complicated musical task of performing Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto in G Major. Maestro Arrau excels at it during this concert recorded in 1976. I am not a pianist, but in the listening of many recordings of many great concert pianists, I've come to know this composition quite well throughout the last thirty years, and I can honestly judge that Arrau's rendition is the one I enjoy the most, either visually or just listening to it. There is something solemn too in the manner in which Arrau delivers this complex composition; something powerful too. It seems to me that Maestro Bernstein conducts this symphony orchestra in a manner that well accommodates to the special delivery and requirements of Maestro Arrau.

in the first movement Arrau does all that single phrases each two notes that he valorizes the maximum. He knows how it is to be done. No one pianist in the world know how and could do it so perfectly, most of them don´t do it. it´s allways played as tatatata and flat. This kind kind of articulation with arms. ellbows, wrists and fingers made the great difference between Arrau and ANY other pianist has ever lived, and this without mentioning his enormous capability of suibtile cantabile and inspiration that came allways form deepest inner insight of the music he played. Arrau´s music was a voyage into the deepest and highest levels of transcendence.

I totally disagree Arrau is brilliant but so is Kristian Zimmerman and Evgeny Kissin they are completely brilliant and more so definately.
@@sarahjones641 ...Arrau was Master of Master and Zimmerman and Kissing were good pianist, I think there's the difference, because no other pianist could achieve the repertoire of Arrau . We can't forget that he won twice ( 1919 and 1920 ) , the Liszt prize after 45 years that nobody achieved it, as well as a score dozens of other important awards , which neither Zimmerman nor Kissin achieved....but of course, nothing is written in tastes...best regards.

Maestro Arrau immer meisterhafte
Interpretively this is one of the most difficult if not THE most difficult concertos ever written. Every bar has an infinite number of subtle nuances that can be explore and mined. Right from the opening, it announces something simple yet extraordinary. Any pianist fortunate enough to play this masterpiece should never ever take it for granted and always be mindful of the unique position this concerto holds in the piano literature and strive to live up to the challenges that Beethoven has set down for the pianist.
for me this one is THE piano concert ... maybe matched (during the last 200 years) but not surpassed
Interesting things you said about it Gregg... It is also my favourite piano concert of all as Ricardo said. However I'll have a hard time to choose between it and Rach 2. Anyway I'm just a layman in music but I listen to this stuff all day my life long.
I totally agree! For me this concerto is THE BENCHMARK for pianists. In my opinion Wilhelm Backhaus‘ interpretation is number one, but Arrau is a close second.

alla por el 65 o 66 estuvo en Baires (Colon) Hicimos el Fantasia Op 80 y el N° 4. En un ensayo, creo que porque habia estado enfermo, tuvo que ensayar el 4° con partitura y le pase las hojas. Quiero decir con esto que estuve junto a el fisica y musicalmente. La mas grande experiencia musical de mi vida. Tal como dicen otros en este foro, la humildad y la grandeza, todo junto. Estabamos preparando la Misa en Si de Bach y el llego para el ensayo de la fantasia y se sento al piano (desplazando a la pianista) y estuvo acompañandonos la misa cerca de una hora. En ese momento no sabia que era un "Bachiano" de semejante calidad cargado de un entusiasmo musical que podria luego ser envidiado por el propio Karl Richter para quien preparabamos la obra. La magia que desplego en el Colon con el N° 4 nunca se la escuche a nadie en cualquier estilo de musica, Evidentemente asociaba su "toque" a una idea linguistica, a una frase poetica; tenia el ritmo de las palabras... decia cuando tocaba...., no podias distinguir claramente si era "tocata" o "cantata"...., magia pura.

Yo tambien estuve con él varias veces en Rio de Janeiro. Asisti a varios ensayos suyos, cenamos con él varias veces, fuimos a librarias juntos (el era un apasionado lector) e incluso fuimos al cine juntos. Era todo un señor, un hombre con admirable cultura. Naturalmente le hicimos tantas y tantas preguntas sobre Musica y Piano y él siempre nos contestó, diciendo: "Cuando son preguntas tan inteligentes, es un placer contestarlas!" Él estuvo en mi casa, impartiendo clase a un gran pianista que tuvo un destino muy trágico, Luis Thomaszeck, nuestro amigo y a quien Arrau aceptó por alumno sin cobrar nada, devido a su grandisimo talento. En seguida él merendó en mi casa con nosotros y, curiosamente, no conocía "huevo hilado" que le servimos, entre otras cosas. Era un gran admirador de Maria Callas, quien el decía ser la más grande expression de la asociación Palabra y Gesto en la Música.Le pusimos por lo tanto algunas grabaciones de Callas, como el "Ah, perfido" de Beethoven, que le encantó, diciendo: "Magnífico!" sobre el Beethoven de la Callas. Preguntándole sobre el cambio de notas entre las dos manos, en algunos pasajes de difícil ejecución pianística, recurso que muchos pianistas usan y al cual Arrau era virtualmente en contra, tuvimos una revelación. Expusimos a Arrau que, como eran las mismas notas, que diferencia hacía ejecutar con una mano que con otra e dimos como ejemplo la famosa pieza "Ensueño" (Träumerei) de las Escenas de la Infancia de Schumann. Justo al comienzo de esta pieza hay un acorde de difícil ejecución a causa de su extensión em ambas manos, al cual suelen los pianistas cambiar la escrita, distribuyendo las notas de dicho acorde en una posición mucho más comoda para la ejecución y como eran las mismas notas, que diferencia hacía ejecutar como Schumann escribiera y como ciertos pianistas lo hacían (e incluso ciertas ediciones que escriben dicho acorde ya modificado para una ejecución más fácil), pues eran absolutamente las mismas notas, sólo que distribuídas en modo diferente entre las manos, resultando en una ejecución mucho más comoda. Pues Maestro Arrau no puso entonces a su vez la siguiente pregunta: "Porque tu crees que Schumann escribió dicho acorde en el modo en que lo ha hecho y no en esta otra forma, de más fácil ejecución?" Le contestamos que no teníamos la más mínima idea. Y Arrau adjuntó:"Porque hay en esta dificultad un sentido EXPRESIVO deseado por el compositor. Si se cambia la disposición para facilitar la ejecución, toda la tension se pierde y el efecto musical y artístico será completamente otro!" Efectivamente, hasta el "gesto" de la ejecución entre las dos manos es muy diferente en una disposición y en otra,sin ninguna tensión estética. Este es solamente UN ejemplo de la cultura musical y pianística del gran Arrau, quien conocía profundamente todos los segredos de la Musica y de la ejecución pianística, poniéndose siempre al servicio del compositor. Por esta observación se puede entrever la escala de valores del Maestro Arrau. Hubo tantas otras revelaciones artísticas por su parte en nuestros encuentros! Y, a bien decir, las hubo también en cada una de sus apariciones en escena, cuando teníamos no solamente un recital o un concierto con orquesta, sino una verdadera y completíssima clase magistral de Música y de Piano! Grandísimo Maestro Arrau! Donde se puede encontrar un pianista como él, actualmente? Todo lo que vemos son jovenes talentos y promesas apresentados como si fueran maestros consumados. O sea, gente que está haciendo todavía la Primera Comunión y que no se sabe a que llegarán, siendo vendidos como si fuesen ya el Papa!
Sergio Squeff Barcelos Gracias por el comentario y las anecdotas que son "reveladoras" (termino muy usado por Beethoven: la musica es una revelacion superior a toda filosofia) Me aclara algo que vi en Arrau (no solo escuche: lo vi) ... tal cual..., el musicologo Boris de Schloezer en un ensayo sobre estetica musical que tiene su eje en Bach (Introduccion a J.S.Bach) dedica un capitulo que lo denomino "El aspecto organico". Alli desarrolla el tema del gesto en la musica (ensaya una fenomenologia de la musica), eso que va mas alla de la "idea" musical o, podriamos llamar, tal o cual nota por sucesion melodica, contrapunto o cuestion armonica. Se refiere a como tal o cual musica en la interpretacion fisica se instala en el cuerpo, particularmente la musculatura, y se hace concreta, mas alla de las abstracciones que contiene. Esta claro que un acorde suena distinto segun su distribucion pero es igual o mas cierto que "el aspecto organico" que implica el acto de tocarlo tiene tanto de danza como de "tocata" y eso es, evidentemente, de importancia capital y compositores como Schumann lo tendrian como un reflejo automatico. En el canto practicamente lo es todo ya que no hay instrumento, no hay mediador, sino que es "uno mismo". Pues, en Claudio Arrau, encontre eso de que el era una continuidad con el piano, es mas, lo traspasaba... sin chocarlo, lo hacia suyo... Creo interesante reflexionar sobre la palabra "estetica" : estecia = sensibilidad, como que anestecia es la ausencia de sensibilidad. La sensibilidad, a diferencia de la sensualidad que es puro cuerpo, puede interpretarse como una "encarnacion del verbo". Tiene idea y biologia, En una persona seria; biologia y biografia, es cierto que practicamente todo biografia pero la bioloigia no esta ausente. El piano de Arrau parece ser parte de su biografia y no podria ser si el no respetara y superara su biologia. En fin, creo que es uno de los asuntos de importacia capital y que, por tu comentario, Arrau lo explico con sencillas palabras.

How I wish I could hear Arrau again.
I love how Arrau is notorious for playing slowly and yet he plays Beethoven's cadenzas faster and with more brilliance and insight than most other pianists.

Yes, Bernstein grew it in 1976, when he left (but didn't divorce) his wife Felicia Montealegre, who was battling cancer at the time, for one of his male lovers (he was bisexual). The beard came off when the two reconciled about ten months later. Felicia succumbed to cancer in 1978, and it took Lenny a long time to get over it. By the mid 1980s, Lenny looked 20 years older than he was.
I love the way Arrau, who was about 73 at the time, handles the concerto, especially the candenza.

Alexander Hamm Oh yes , Brendel . I heard his last recital in Copenhagen some 12 years ago. He played some sonatas of Haydn and the Schubert Sonata in G Major. Unforgettable. It was hypnotic.

Desde niño fui escuchando el nombre de Claudio Arrau. Siendo él chileno, en nuestro país no se dimensionaba quizás el tamaño musical que tenía en el mundo de la música docta.
Hoy, cuando ya hace años que el maestro nos dejó, ver su herencia, su legado al mundo y en especial a su Chile tan querido. No puedo menos que emocionarme el ver este video, y que gracias a la actual tecnología podemos tener el privilegio y la posibilidad de ver y escuchar la grandeza de un virtuoso como Arrau.
Cuesta mucho ser reconocido en Chile por muchos de nuestros compatriotas... Pero la calidad gracias a ka tecnología permanece haciendo historia.
Te cuento que yo provengo de una familia amante de la música clásica, y desde muy niña empecé a escucharla. Por lo tanto, podría decir que la he amado toda mi vida. Reconozco que mi debilidad son Beethoven (primero) y Mozart. Los tengo en el fondo de mi corazón 🎵🎵😍💙💚

To me--Arrau was and is the BEST for Beethoven's music as he spent his life in study of Beethoven's music and near the end of his life said his only regret was that he felt HE and others play the adagios and other slow movements too fast!

Realmente espectacular. El ultimo gran exponente de una generacion de pianistas que ya no existen. Supo pasar por Uruguay en su juventud, ya siendo un grande. Pues sí Sr. Balbi, por desgracia no sólo en su país, también en el mío, España, sólo se escuchan frivolidades y pachangadas, con la colaboración cómplice de los medios, donde apenas se escucha ya la Gran Música, y no digamos nada de las joyitas de nuestra querida Zarzuela...A los políticos y sus adlatares, parece que solo les interesa mantener aborregada e ignorante a la gente... Así no piensan y les siguen votando... Un cordial saludo desde España.

What a great combination of talent and musical expertise. Maestro Arrau with all his dignity and his experience as a piano virtuoso. His presence on stage exuded kindness and greatness. And Maestro Bernstein’s brilliant and wise baton. I love the warmth and respect with which he embraces Maestro Arrau at the end. Two great Masters and an excellent orchestra interpreting one of the greatest classical music composers. How well these two understood Beethoven’s music. They must be in heaven now mesmerizing angels and archangels with their music. Bravo Maestros!!!

La gran música, interpretada por grandes maestros, directores geniales y orquestas magníficas, formadas por extraordinarios y anónimos ejecutantes, tiene el poder y la virtud de despertar sentimientos, a veces muy distintos en los destinatarios de todos los tiempos. Hoy, la técnica es una bendición que nos permite escuchar este mismo concierto con Clara Haskil y de inmediato ir a la presente versión, y varias otras que pueden aspirar al cetro de la mejor, sin que lleguemos a un consenso, pues "De gustibus non est disputando". Gracias a todos quienes hacen posible este goce, especialmente en estos días de pandemia en que "LA MUSICA" nos aligera la vida.

El 4to Concierto de Beethoven se caracteriza por encerrar "desafios" al interprete. Tanto técnicos como emocionales. El Señor Claudio Arrau los enfrenta utilizando una tormenta de virtuosismo. No tienen secretos para él ninguno de sus movimientos. Técnica, digitación,colorido, tempi y buen gusto afloran como siempre en tan colosal chileno. Que podemos decir del maestro Bernstein...Un monstruo!

Hier sind aber auch noch 2 Flaschen. Die nehme ich ihr gerne mit. Das müsste doch vorerst reichen, oder? Ansonsten: Tati möchte Dich am Do. oder Fr. besuchen kommen. Dann könntest Du ihr ja noch was mitgeben und sie könnte es auf dem Heimweg in der Residenz abgeben.

No 4 is in a class of its own. All the hallmarks of Beethoven are here combined into sublime cohesion: lyricism, drama, pomp and circumstance, sweetness and thunder. Arrau is off the scale magnificent, exquisite pace and tone.

Besides being a great pianist, Arrau seemed particularly skilled at choosing great pianos. His sound is quite unique in its brightness and clarity, which accentuated his entirely brilliant approach to playing.
His sound is not for the pianos, is for his thechnique, he uses the entire arm completely relaxed, He never selected a piano. I know that because he was my friend.
The combination of Arrau's penetrating musicianship along with his patrician pianism makes for a highly memorable performance. Arrau/Bernstein - a perfect union of two artistic giants.

@Emmanuel Avila Pianist bueno a mi la musica me va mas por lo evocativo que produce cuando escucho a piazolla interpretado que se yo por un norcoreano o un checo me da como una rabia y a la vez alegria interna especialmente oblivion por kramer . glenn gould era increible creo que jamas en su vida erro una tecla lei una vez que alguien dijo que el problema con gould era que ya no podia escuchar a nadie mas tocando esa composicion jejeje como que los borra a todos pero insisto con besonov ese chico busca una especie de perfeccion y tiene toques grandiosos y tambien sutiles ultimamente escuche sus versiones del cascanueces de la suite y es increible el control que logra sobre ambas manos ademas me parece super humilde y lo primero que debe tener un grande y por eso se llega es la humildad
