      @@fjt99 Actually, they are about a lot of things. US has tougher roll-over regulations than Europe. Europe also has crash-test rules with pedestrians, which the US does not. US rules about airbags assume that the passengers are not wearing a seatbelt, where European rules assume that they are. European frontal crash tests assume the barrier will give way (like hitting another car) whereas the US tests use a barrier that won't collapse (like hitting a concrete wall). That means different front-end design (this VW Buzz might not pass American regulations, which might be why they don't sell it in the US).
      Then there's the silly things--American regulations say that windshield wipers must clean x% of the windshield, which is a larger percentage than Europe. American cars must have side reflectors--not so in Europe. In Europe, turn signals must be amber--not red, not yellow, not clear. And so on, and so on...

    Part of the reason the cargo area is so large on the version reviewed here, is that there will be a 3-row short wheelbase model with seating for 6 (as opposed to 7 on the long wheelbase version we will get). There probably isn't much space for cargo with the rear seats in use, but that is pretty consistent with other 3-row Euro vans. You can actually tell this is part of the plan, as you note the same colored pockets as the front 2 rows in the rear to function as armrests just below where you pointed out the profiles of the ID. They could make an electric Golf similar in appearance to one of the earlier generation Golfs, kinda like what Honda is doing with the “e” that is based on an older Civic. They could even try and take on Jeep by making an electric version of the Thing (181) to take on the newer electric off roaders being released by the likes of GM and Jeep. They could even crank up the novelty factor to 11 by reintroducing the Beetle as an electric car, possibly styling it even more after the original, complete with a frunk.

      @Turk380 2 года назад +12

      I'm guessing you don't know much about how EV's work. You can charge from any outlet. Many, if not most, state parks have at least a 15A outlet at the site and many even a 30A/120v or a 50A/240v. Private campgrounds like a KOA most certainly do. you could easily recharge over a 2-3 night weekend stay. Base range is surely going to be in the 200-300 range so you could get a good ways away from your home even without a charge stop in between. An EV Weekender type camper would be so damned awesome, as you could conceivably drive to your site, then run the AC all night long without having to piss everyone off with a generator and not have to sleep sweaty (speaking as a midwesterner here), run a modern 12v compressor fridge for cold drinks and non-soggy cheese, and still have plenty of juice to get back home. You might only need fuel for a camp stove, unless they include a high-amp power port for an induction cooktop I guess, like the Rivian camp kitchen.
      To browse charger location around the US, check out plugshare dot com

    • @minucos
      @minucos 2 года назад +7

      @@Turk380 ah yes I didn’t know that an EVs could be plugged in….
      As I said, if you want to do actual camping - not going to a camp site with full facilities, which at that point why not take a proper full sized camper? - you’ll struggle to do it in an EV. A lot of the camper van set enjoy it because they can go completely off the grid. Drive overland and park somewhere remote for a few days/weeks. This EV will not be capable of such things given it’s limited range.
      I’d also be skeptical of how much charge you’d get if you drained your battery almost completely to get to a campsite 200+ miles away then spent 3 days plugged into 110v while running your AC and other devices. The ID4 which shares the same engine and battery pack is listed as taking 50 hours to charge from 0-100% from a standard outlet 8-9 hours from a 30A. Those times would blow right out if you are running the AC and powering other devices throughout the time you are attempting to charge too.
      That doesn’t even factor in how long the journey would wind up taking to get to where I might want to go having to stop for 30 mins for every 3 hours of driving.
      So basically your entire trip has to be planned around parks that have 30A chargers at a minimum, and limiting your distance as well to locations that’s re either close by or have DC charging on the way.
      Sounds like a nightmare to me.
      EVs are great urban and suburban vehicles. They aren’t going to work on long road trip and remote situations when fitted with limited range like the buzz is. The rivian with its higher capacity would be a better prospect for that type of thing

    The best thing about the old buses was that you could travel great distances, and sleep in them. I'd much rather have a tall, lightweight hybrid bus than a full electric. It doesn't have to be fast (the originals certainly weren't), but it needs to get great gas mileage and be able to go great distances, and have a fold-down back seat that turns into a bed.
    Also... c'mon... obviously it should have round headlights.

      Look at vehicles like the Expedition Max, and you can see that the stretch can often come in rear overhang beyond the rear axle. The Max has a 9" longer wheelbase, while being 13" longer overall. That extra is in the rear overhand. In fact, in many cases, it's easier to change the rear of the body and chassis than the drivetrain dimension. Honestly, it's most notable that there is no change to the rear overhang. It was a valid question from Doug.

      I'm not here to prove I'm right about anything, but when someone describes an overall length change and says it's a wheelbase change, I'll point it out.

If they load it up to the 70k range their numbers will peak and fall off quickly. Then the Chinese will copy it and sale it for 45k tilt. They can’t do that if the base buzz is 45k.

VW needs a bigger battery for the states to hit a 250 mile range. It also needs faster peak charging. If they bring it to the us with a 200 mile range it won’t be taken to Seriously after the initial spike. The bigger battery will drive up the price. The advantage that VW has now is zero competition. Two years from now that won’t be the case. If Chrysler can get the range of their plug in van up to say 90 miles for under 50k before tax credits. That will be far better in the real world. That limiting factor with the Pacifica is limited production. Even so their are two in my Suburban neighborhood. Two years from now China and VW needs to pray Tesla has too much going on to enter the Van market. If Tesla hits the market with a 70k van it will have a 300 mile range and 250kw charging.
