Man, it is REALLY hard to kidnap somebody with this truck
Love your channel Marques! Keep up the good work!
So I’ve kidnapped this person for the past 7 days…
I'm not an expert kidnapper so maybe I missed something, but it looks they forgot to include an emergency release in that cover for the air compressor. Easy kidnapping.
I dont see the focus on kidnapping so much, it is perfectly suitable for disposal.

Sentences that have never been heard until now.

You know Mr. Regular is gonna try and cram himself in there. And probably also the frunk. He was able to fit in the frunk of a Porsche Cayman.
Waiting for the next James Bond to have the foldable wings extend out of them...

"Too bad for you!"
Funny how there a big “don’t text and drive” movement yet some cars like these will have you go through several screens for on the go adjustments as simple as moving your airflow. Physical functions and buttons are still much appreciated! You don’t have to throw every little thing onto a screen just for aesthetics.
That ties into my thoughts on practicality. DD gave it a 9 out of 10. While the truck is very clever, any vehicle that takes over an hour to "refuel" does not deserve a 9.
Exactly!
Hence WHY so many car makers are restoring some buttons.
I hate screens. Give me real buttons all day. Would love to see a truly EV with buttons and analog speedometers etc
@@danieltv123 yeah I like both, but given the choice I’ll take a screen
Don't buy it, you can't afford it either
After just watching the Cybertruck delivery event, I don't know how you pass this up for a Cybertruck. The amount of utility and features in this truck are amazing and the price is better.
This is a dream quirk vehicle for Doug.
Finally something quirky that's not a boring crossover
lol Maybe you should add the RT1 to Jailbreak.

Ayyy first time seeing Asimo comment
@@OrbGeopolitix I e would love to see that.
Doug missed a pretty massive “quirk and feature.” The Rivian has the ability to tow-to-charge. The idea being that if you are stranded, the hitches on the front can be used to tow the car and the regenerative braking mechanism will allow the car to be charged from the tow. This feature was actually shown being used in the documentary Long Way Up when one of their Rivian’s did not have enough power to make it to the next charger.
In theory any EV with regenerative braking could do that, it just might not be recommend by the manufacturer.
@@directorjustin Most EV makers actually strongly recommend against towing in any way except on a flatbed. Tesla, for example, is extremely clear that the car should never be towed with tires on the road. Rivian seems to have some sort of special sauce they designed in to allow the tow-to-charge feature.
All EVs have this ability to charge while being towed because of the regenerative braking. A couple of people have already shown this functionality with Tesla on youtube.
But if the manufacturer doesn't recommend towing to charge then you shouldn't do it.
@@parkds Tesla unlike most EVs defaults to Park when the battery runs out, where many EVs can be overridden to go into neutral for emergencies.
Doug also missed another nice feature for the frunk. If you move the floor on the frunk, there is a plug that is used to remove water or anything. You can put ice so you can use it as a drink cooler.
I watched the Ramcharger video before this. Proof that fads and fashion go full circle lol
He thought the front bar turning green when charging was weird? I think that’s the sickest thing to come out in EV in a long time. This whole truck is next level innovation. No one is doing what Rivian does right now.

@@americanrambler4972 I loved the probe :D
Isn't Normal where Illinois State University is?
Best thing is companies like this invent items that large manufacturers are scared to pursue for cost reasons and once they are proven then all the cool little items become mainstream on most vehicles. The roof/bed rack is one of them and is a great idea
Yes it would have even better if they had one that had posts that you could attach the rack to , then racks on the roof so you could carry long items like boards etc.
If it’s a moving part it will malfunction and this thing has tons of latches doors cables and odd functioning things that will all break
Rivian is financially backed by Ford and Amazon. I believe Ford also built the manufacturing plant that they're sharing to build EV's.
@@JakkiPi ford cancelled their partner EV. They are completely separate organizations.
Unfortunately established companies need to make money to attract investors. Start up EVs can just IPO and get valuations that eclipse Ford or GM
Rivian just ran away with the electric truck market. I saw one today (with manufacturer plates, that was cool), and it's such a perfect size. Smaller than my F150, but bigger than the Honda Ridgeline I had before this. I've been saying for years how awesome a truck in between the two would be. I literally want one of these so bad
No they didn't 🤣😂
@@chanoleyva8584 who else has an electric truck this successful? F-150 lightning sure, but rivian was first. Silverado EV is ugly, Cybertruck is vaporware, hummer EV is way too expensive. This truck IS the electric pickup truck

Yes but the people who are buying Rivians are not working class people who actually have a use for a truck.
Literally no one in their right mind would buy this over a truck of comparable size and weight.
The Cybertruck and Hummer EV are very cool, but this is the one I would get if I was in the market for an electric truck. Just looks like a great daily driver
And it’s so practical. Amazing vehicle
You know it’s an important vehicle in Doug’s eyes when a video breaks the 40 minute mark! If I were ever in the market for a truck, this would be it
In the future this truck would have sphere wheels
I didn't notice it was 45 min long 😱 and that's thanks to the truck and Doug.

The carabiner key fob is probably the coolest idea here. You could just hang your key on a belt loop or something when you leave the car and not stuff it in a tight pocket where it certainly will scratch your phone screen.
The bracelet too ! When going on the beach you can't leave everything in it
Just put you keys and phone in different pockets.

This truck is a perfect example of how manufacturers can look at the aftermarket features people crave, and apply them directly to production. Air station, roll up cover, roof/bed bars...and the list goes on. Good on Rivian for paying attention to the details!
I like to have a air tank full of compressed air , for the tire and blowing away dust and dirt .
only issue is they over complicated alot and I see alot of issues that will happen when people use it as a Truck
This vehicle wouldn’t last a week as a work truck. This is nothing more than a Home Depot flower getter for the wife.
@@monroefive-o40 this makes my ridgeline look like an f-150
Yeah but I really don’t understand a lot of the choices, I think they made a lot of choices bad for trucks. They don’t have high power outlets, bizarre they don’t, given so many folks have giant generators in their bed to power welders or power tools. Also the use of buttons on the edges of the bed are going to get damaged, tunnel doors should use normal handles, or maybe tailgate handles, would be far better. Bed cover should be manual imo, but I get why it’s auto. Those doors on the tunnel should be able to support more weight, though it’s minor issue. The adjustable roof rack seems gimmicky, and I doubt they will be very resilient. Screens are always bad as gauge clusters imo because of glare. Built in speaker kind of confirms that much of the truck is gimmick based for me.
Generally I love it, but I do think it took too much ev/city inspiration, and neglected many truck features. I looove the look though, new but approachable, and pretty.
My hope is they make a more rugged model eventually, or make them options, but I doubt it, they will probably be a permanent city truck manufacturer.
Went to CCS for transportation design, and a classmate/friend put a compartment exactly like this "gear tunnel" on his Ford Ranger senior project back in 2005 and not one single person took him seriously. Our "teacher", Ralph Gilles, took one look at it, said "this is stupid" and walked away. Thanks Ralph, great critique. With management like that I can see how Chrysler became the forward-thinking innovation leader that it is.
I've never heard a design educator "critique" any student's work that way. Normally, something unusual and unexpected would always open a conversation with the student explaining his how and why.
@@alexcallas8222 Well, now you have.
Honestly it is stupid. Bad design choice having the door swing down like that because it’s going to get in your way when you try to load or unload. It’s also just not a very usefully sized space.

This was by far the best review I have ever watched. Well done!!!
It's really great seeing a company who was funded and really didn't take it for granted. This is a SERIOUS competitor for the ev market...as long as there is no recalls or any serious issues with it.
Time will tell, but of course being an ev there isn't a lot that can go wrong compared to a new startup ice car maker.
To be honest, seeing lots of moving parts like the front vents, the charging port etc. made a bit anxious throughout the video, considering those small motors won't be easily reachable if they break.
Nobody is going to buy it.
@@Jehowy666 why are all of your comments on this channel negative. Go outside and enjoy life 🤣
Initially I thought it's going to be gimicky, but after watching the video I prefer it much more than a Tesla. It's electric, it's modern, but still feels more like a "normal" car. As a vehicle it looks more polished than a Tesla - hopefully there won't be quality issues like Tesla still does. It's a capable all-terrain vehicle full of storage space, something that you can use to do your job. I'd still prefer physical buttons though.

... and it has a trunk, which basically no other truck has... except for Honda for the past 15 years.
Great job. Doug you should incorporate night time footage in your reviews. Vehicles really come alive at night. We get to see the ambient lighting and how dynamic the turn signals and head lights are. Very few reviewers ever show off the cars at night. Thanks.
Damn... That's actually an excellent idea.
I also like this idea! 👍🏻
I don't think he usually can, because most of the cars he reviews are from companies or people who need the vehicle.
I support this
I second this idea!
While I was Michigan this past week, I saw a couple of Rivian trucks. I must say, it looks awesome in person. I hope the company is successful.
I like how he glazed over the 0-60 in 3 seconds on a truck weighing 6000lbs. Holy moly.
I love everything excluding the lack of buttons. I don’t care what anyone says, having to take your eyes off the road to adjust temperature and whatnot is silly.
@Tomas Lekis Wow! Doug's dad agrees with you!
i think car manufacturers are doing it because they are counting on you using autopilot most of the time in the near future
I agree also. At least controls for basic climate and audio. But I guess they think you will use steering wheel controls or voice commands. Idk
@@VESTIGE888 ultimately they’re doing it because now they can and because it’s cheaper and faster for them to program everything into a touch screen than it is to design, produce, install and wire physical buttons all over the vehicle like they’ve had to in the past.
Yeah, they get away with this bs bc people are baffled by this touch tech. If buttons are so outdated, then slidebars are also alright option. At least you feel wtf is going on without looking at the screen.
I'm disappointed you didn't try to crawl through the gear tunnel. That's something I've been wanting to do ever since it was announced.

Consumers should rejoice at such innovation.
Uhh no my friend, you don't get that type of speed (0-60) and range from just a "wouldn't it be cool if...?" design. These are very well thought out to be able to make those type of numbers.

using a touchscreen for everything, including basic functions like controlling the AC fan speed, is cool in theory but in practice it sucks. never going away though, as it is a holy grail of car design: a cost cutting measure that can be sold as a premium feature
Fingerprints.. Fingerprints everywhere... Stupid fad that will hopefully die when everyone complains they can not do anything with their car when the screen fails..
I really miss big ol rotary knobs for my stereo. Turn that up sounds much better than tap that up.
Using touch screens for everything is CHEAP. No need to design, build, buy, and wire physical switches. Just add code to show the icons, sense the touches, and send commands to the appropriate controllers. A one time expense.
I do agree, and definitely a distraction while driving to have to look down at the screen where one needs to touch, instead of simple tactile controls that can be used easily without taking one's eyes off the road.
couldnt agree more! AT LEAST volume knobs, and phisical AC controls. Otherwise its way too much unpractical for everyday use
With all that storage space I ask myself: where did they even put all the electronics and the humongous battery? I mean the truck sure is massive, but I still can't figure out where they found all that space XD
Ridgeline has had a trunk since 2006. The side access is a new twist and being able to access the tunnel without unloading anything to lift the lid is a nice feature.

Im not a big fan of ev's, but this thing is super sweet and I saw one on the road the other day and they look even better in person. I'm a huge fan of this truck I got to say
I first heard of this truck in a New York Times article so I looked it up on RUclips to see if there were any videos about it and this is the first one I saw. I'm subscribing to your channel right now because I love the way you explain pretty much everything about the vehicle. Kudos dude 👍
enjoy watching videos about sooo many cars here. THIS is a great channel :-)
Welcome to the Doug Cult. "You're one of us. You're one of us." lol
Cringe
This is a seriously impressive first effort. If it proves to be reliable at all, they should sell in droves.
They need to just to break even, it's weird how Doug's 45minute video would mention nothing about the company questionable financials...
@@Rays_Bad_Decisions he’s a car reviewer, not a financial advisor
Not at $70K+.
I honestly think the Ford truck is a little better at being a truck. The cybertruck is clearly in its own lane. This car is goofy and ugly but has a lot of cool little touches especially the locking rope and the movable rails. I don't think this company will be what people think it will be especially given this is the best foot forward.
@@gavcom4060 yes and its a car company with comically bad numbers. Less than a 100 presales, this video is 45 minutes long, have you seen other Doug videos. You don't think Doug sold his soul to Rivian???
I was thinking about getting a polestar but this truck really blows it out of the park.
Mind changed
This is the coolest and most well thought out vehicle I’ve seen in a long time
So much about this vehicle makes sense. It’s extremely impressive. Interested in how the quality will turn out.
Its built un Illinois. Quality isn't a thing here.
Man this is the most Doug Demuro car ever. So many cool things to review.
@@yungboicontigo9278 it’s hard to top that echelon lol
Disappointing to hear sub par camera system from a new EV. That should be an easy tech area to be one of the best.
Have been keeping an eye on this truck for the last 6 months or so. Very impressive for a first go. Not sure I would bite on it for a first gen ( that is if I had the $ to drop) I think they need at least one more generation (similar to video game consoles lol) before it's really going to shine. One question for Rivian team is, if this is an offroad, camping machine, wear is the integrated solar hookup? Where are the separate solar panels to mount on that beautiful bed/roof rack system?
This company is backed by Ford so it's not really their first go, they will have the engineering expertise of Ford.
Was thinking SAME THING! Where can I add solar charging or for accessories/camping? Nice if built-in, but modular could work too I guess. I Also would WAIT to see how they hold up over TIME, and if they are at ALL 'User Serviceable' of do I have to pay a ridiculous fee for Maint. program?
Hoping they add that in the near future
solar charging one of these would not be very practical. here's why: the standard home charger requires 15 amps at 120 volts to charge the battery at a rate of 4 miles per hour of charging. producing 15 amps of ac power via solar would require at least 1400 watts of solar panels. how would you possibly mount that many panels on this truck? at best with today's solar panel technology you might be able to put 800 watts of panels over the cab and bed, which would only give you just over 2 miles per hour of charging. that's not a lot of range increase unless you plan to stay in one place for a couple of weeks. it might be ok if you planned on using the truck as a power source while camping and the solar would keep the battery charged up close to where it was when you arrived, but it's doubtful it would be able to fully charge the battery.
@@marzsit9833
Pretty sure he wants the solar panels for powering his stove and other camping gear, which is much more reasonable.
Since watching Long Way Up I have been interested in Rivian. Thanks 👍
Hands down the most impressive pickup ive ever seen! So many small smart details, fully packed.
Rivian also offers an incentive to workers here in Illinois that will pay for a % of the monthly payment to own their very own Rivian. This company is amazing.
Where in Illinois is it located? What’s the pay? Ford is also in Illinois and they pay $32 + benefits?
How many are rolling off an hour?
@@fixedguitar47 Bloomington - normal Illinois is where they make every single Rivian. I don’t know all the specifics but my neighbor is an Exec for Rivian and he’s told me big things are coming. I see them all over the road here in our town.

@Gurtman PT Deliveries have been delayed to March 2022 at the earliest. They're gonna find out how hard it is to manufacture at scale.
@@Bellissima2k this ain't a mass market vehicle tho... Doubt that they are even planning 10k this year. Their money is coming from amazon, SUVs and to an extent ford. Plus how may people even want a 70k truck with a bed smaller than f150?
Definitely a nice truck for camping. Electric, tons of storage, and a ton of gadgets/ convenient extras.
Hi, I’ve been watching your channel for sometime now and one thing I like about your vehicle reviews it that you always do your best research about the vehicle your reviewing with your honest opinions. I’m in love with the Rivian R1T and own many shares in their stocks. I hope to own a extended mile range version one day when they come for sale. My channel is about adventure and traveling and one of these R1T trucks is exactly what I’m looking for! Great review!! I’ll give the video a like and i just so happend to be your 60th thousand like 👍 (:
2021: "I bought a Defender, I even got the extended warranty because I will own this long term"
2022: "THIS is the Rivian R1T, but not just A R1T, this one is MY R1T"
This is so cool. I live no more than 40 miles from the Rivian plant, and I’m proud to say my grandfather retired after he finished helping build it. It’s cool to see it moving forward.
Wow!!
Do you ever see them test driving on the road outside of the plant?
Btw, I hope your grandfather is enjoying his retirement 🤞🏻
This truck is complete garbage. I wouldn’t call this a truck at all
Aren't they using the old Diamond Star plant?

This thing just screams "practicality." Loads of great design choices and features here.
I cannot wait to see all the off-road recovery videos of these.
I love how at 7:03-7:07 a bug is just chilling next to the cross bar and watching Doug remove them
The features on this thing definitely show how as customers we've settled for the status quo of minimum innovation possible while spending maximum money for the average car for. Rivian is a disrupter.
Most cars already have these features besides the tunnel
@@dar7279 I get it - I'm not thinking that we're still in a day and age where the Yugo is the most advanced car ever. However! A lot of the features are pushing the norm - even all the way down to the key fob. It's the details.
My rule of thumb is you don't have to be different, you just have to do it best - and in my opinion, that's what's happening here with the Rivian.
@@oliverkamyszew7820 Let's see how they can last long term...All about if the Rivian truck or SUV and whatever else they come out with, can last 5, 10, 15, 20 years...w/ regular maint....without any issues...That is the true test....

I am not a fan of electric trucks, but this one has to be the one of the most amazing trucks on the market. So many well thought out ideas.
This is the first truck I’ve ever felt like I needed.
I feel like they tackle sooooooo many things at once with this truck. I truly like it the only knock for me would be the apple CarPlay and android auto and the camera system…..I wish it was in my price range. someday I’ll be able to own 1
Finally an ev truck that actually looks like a truck and not a door stop
I'm curios, which ev trucks look like a door stop?
@@damilolaakanni Cybertruck probably.
@@Xyler94 Cybertruck definetly. This is way better. and more practical I'd say
This is certainly more conventional. But the Cybertruck is far more practical. Seatings for six. 6.5 foot bed. Tesla’s supercharger network, etc. The looks will definitely turn many off, including Doug.
@@marshallphillips7763 what cyberpunk? Any on the road, 2 years after the dog and pony show?
I love all of the ideas that have been put into this truck. You can tell it was truly thought out. However, I am concerned about everything being electronic. If you look across the car industry, manufacturers that have gone to pop out door handles or door latches that are electronically controlled have faced huge reliability issues with these actuators. I understand that most people will not face this problem until the 3rd or 4th year of ownership. With this truck, its not just the actuators for the door its the 15 others I am also concerned about and the cost of ownership once these start to fail.
My thoughts exactly, a first-time automaker, making a vehicle with powered climate vents? What happens when the actuator on the charger door fails? And couple that with all the peculiar joys of an air suspension system?
I bet you can't use this car in winter. That charging port and door handles are never going to open when little bit of moist gets in and freezes them shut
@@jauho7483 -- While I agree that a lot of this stuff is unnecessarily complex and likely to fail, the car is made in Illinois. I'm pretty sure they tested it in winter conditions.
Rivian dont have to warry about this, they know its car for rich millenials with 6seconds attention span, and will change this car after 6 months for other because theyll get bored with it 😁😂
@@jauho7483 It doesn’t snow in Silicon Valley.
I love the ovals just because its so recognizable/unique
The Rivian R1T is not only one of the first electric trucks to enter production, but it's also one of the most quirky. The demand for the R1T is stiff, however, I believe its products in less or maybe slow I should say..... resulting in a much wait to get the electric truck. What are others' suggestions?
I really appreciate that you do a conversion to metrics, that is something that other car-channels don't, and it's annoying. Thank you so much for this extra touch on your videos.
As a car manufacturer, I would create a certain option package, which is named after Doug. Just to let go Doug crazy by reviewing that certain car and talking about the quirks and features 😄😄
You do know they only made exactly six of these, right? in two years?
@@capo_di_capi Meanwhile, Freightliner has had dozens of vehicles (of several types) *on the road* for some time now.
