@@DougDeMuro Looks like you filmed in Brackenridge park which has a little kiddie train that goes throughout the entire park. I ride and drive there all the time. If I would have known you were there I would have stopped by to say hi!
One thing I’ve seen in the comments that applies to a lot of buyers-since the bed is basically just an F-150 bed, thousands of accessories are immediately available. Also you don’t have to worry about some company that makes a cool truck going out of business and parts being hard to find (this is one reason Rivian does not look great to me).
I wonder if someone will eventually develop a genset that can be bed mounted to aid these trucks in long distance hauling to overcome the lower range. Should still be far more efficient than a traditional ICE.
@@solomonmarcus5496 I think there are two types of buyers, people who want an unusual looking vehicle and people who want ordinary good design. Historically unusual designs have been hot for a while (like the PT Cruiser) but often are viewed as just ugly later. The basic F-150 look has been around a long time and slowly evolves, and buyers like it.
It may not be as “fun” as the Rivian, or as “cool” as the Hummer, but I think that’s the point. It seems like every car company feels like they need to make their car look super different, and/or copy the interior of Teslas to be a true EV. It’s nice to see a company just take a current vehicle and just make it electric, without all the unnecessary song and dance.
@@jorgesolis5055 THIS. IS. A. UTILITARIAN. VEHICLE. Truck buyers, you know the people that have actually made GM, Ford, and Dodge millions in sales and will continue to buy trucks when they aren't cool anymore, don't tend to want interesting or artistic design. This is the reason why most all traditional trucks look relatively similar. Those other E-Trucks are lifestyle vehicles, which will sell well now, but cattle ranchers, farmers, and construction workers are never going to buy them for their work. They will buy this. That is the genius of their "lazy design."
Having it look more or less like a normal F150 was the absolute SMARTEST thing they did when they designed this truck. Not only does it keep the price down, it also keeps their normal truck owners interested. I personally hate the fact that the E Silverado looks like a fancy Avalanche. They should have kept the same styling, then I might be interested in going electric with GM.
I could be wrong but I think the Chevy electric is based on the same platform as the Hummer EV. That's why it doesn't look like a normal truck. I definitely agree with you about looking like a normal F150
100%. Tesla truck (at least the Original) looks like a 1980s bad movie spaceship.. not everyone wants draw attention to themselves. 'Flashy' gets pulled over more too.. If they can truly sell one for $40k that would be awesome, (most people on the planet cant afford 6 figure car loans).
Of course we all know that an 80s F150 looks different than a 2022 F150, but subtle changes over time keep it recognizable. The move to not try to totally reinvent the wheel is financially efficient for the company and the customer.
I absolutely agree. Now ford needs to offer it in all cab/bed configs and trim levels. Let me get max battery, regular cab, 8' bed and chrome fake grille, cloth split bench and im in!
Really love that Ford kept the look of the classic pickup instead of going for the 'soft' unibody style look that even GM half adopted with the EV Silverado. Definitely makes the Lightning the most attractive electric truck so far.
Eh, it's not the most attractive. Others look nicer. It (and the Rivian) are just the most practical to actually use as a pickup truck. Since most pickup truck owners never do that, it mostly doesn't matter.
Man. Not a Ford fanboy, but they been knocking it out of the park lately. The Bronco is an amazing off-road vehicle, the Maverick bringing back the mini truck segment and now the cheapest electric truck you can buy.
Another review video I saw he tried towing with it, a light towing test of 3700 pounds killed the range to under 100 miles so it basically failed at being a truck.
Ford has absolutely knocked it out of the park with this. I'd go with the "base" model myself. Plenty of power , range and features for my situation. Good to see a domestic brand doing this.
@@danieledwardfowler Oh I agree, the Maverick ticks all the boxes for me as well. But financially I can’t afford either right now. BUT in the light of $60,000 starting prices for internal combustion trucks this is a wonderful deal.
And it's actually a decently affordable truck EV at the base level. And I can't imagine most people need more than 200 miles per day to drive in most situations, and overnight charging ensures you are topped off for the day. Very workable, could be a serious evolution.
@@mattcary8075 99% of truck owners use their trucks to drop their kids off at school, drive to the office, and stop by the store on the way home from the office. Very, very few truck owners actually use their trucks, and an even smaller number of the people who do use them are actually hauling things over 200 miles a day. You might live in a place where there are more people using their trucks, but that’s not how most of the U.S. is using them.
For those wondering why you’d need to jump an electric vehicle: The electronics are still low voltage and often shared with the gas vehicles. But in particular the relays for an EV main locomotive battery and the key fob stuff are controlled by 12V computers. All the classic electronics like the stereo, power windows, screens, etc are usually the same 12V stuff the auto industry knows how to work with. So if the 12V battery is dead, then it can’t run the safety checks to engage and connect the big main battery to start or charge the vehicle. There’s no more starter motor and you don’t need all the cold cranking amps anymore but you still need enough to engage the high voltage circuitry. The 12V battery will be kept charged by the high voltage system where possible. This is also good for maintenance as the high power stuff is only in limited locations and it isn’t like 400V or whatever is running everywhere to kaboom in an accident.
The same is true of Toyota hybrids (probably others). It is good on cold days to have a lot more cranking power from the big battery (yes, those batteries don’t provide the range in cold weather that they do in warmer).
I will never be a truck guy, but this has got to be one of the most practical and well thought-out EVs so far. This will sell very well. Ford knocked this one out of the park.
Was literally just thinking this. I’m also not a Ford guy, but so much about this truck makes sense. And it looks amazing. Ford proves with this, the GT, Mustang, and Bronco that they can kick a lot of ass when they really want to.
Indeed. Imagine a guy at a ranch that generates his own electricity and then charges up his Ford EV Truck, a truck that has zero emissions and doesn't disrupt any wildlife!
The fact that they used the style from the previous gen shows a good way of keeping the price reasonable. I just noticed the style has the older light housing but also adding the bar across to make it look new. Good job FORD!
@@stevegiboney4493 That's the fully loaded price; that's what the electric hummer starts at. this starts at 44k it being the cheapest ev truck you can buy, so yes its reasonable. the Silverado will be 50k but only for fleets that buy a bunch, the consumer versions starts at 80k. rivian at 60k and the cybertruck isn't even out yet. They're all gonna top way past 100k
This is the only electric truck that makes sense. Reinventing the wheel with proprietary body panels is a terrible idea. Ford kept the same body panels, so if it gets in an accident it can easily be fixed with normal off the shelf parts. There's no reason for electric vehicles to use radically different body shapes. As someone who has never owned a modern truck, I would rather buy the Ford electric truck, than any other vehicle. It just has more features, and is not overly complicated or overly ugly.
Doug positioning himself to be right where you'd want to be when the tailgate drops and timing his phrasing to match when it fully drops is great videography.
Doug actually missed quite a few features: Front Trunk: back center, there is a removable panel where you have direct access to the 12Volt battery, from which you can jump/swap batteries from. Front Trunk: Also has a drain plug in that lower compartment as it is designed to also be a cooler for tailgating. (Covered by the charge pouch in the video) Front Seats: are able to lay fully flat, if you have the backseat lifted up, for sleeping. The backseat under storage: folds open and meets with the seat and can be secured.
This truck is really cool! I expected it to be much more costly - it almost seems too good to be true. It looks like Ford thought of everything when designing this, they really did a good job. I haven't jumped on the electric car bandwagon, but I have to admit vehicles like this do a lot to get me on board. Nice vehicle, and good review! 👍👍
Agreed - I’m not at EV guy, but I think this thing is going to dominate the market. Ford understands that the majority of truck buyers want it to actually look like a truck, and they are also able to take advantage of the economies of scale of already making so many ICE trucks that can share many components. I think the Rivian is really made for your average Google employee who wants to haul their $15K mountain bike rather than a real truck buyer, and don’t even get me started with the farce that is the Cybertruck!
No way this truck is at the price they claim at the dealership. Even if ford takes a big loss on each one the dealers will mark it up big time, just like they’re doing with the corvette.
Finally we have reached the point where automakers aren’t designing their electric and hybrid vehicles to look like they’re from Neptune. Most consumers would consider an electric vehicle as their daily car if it can do most of the things of a normal vehicle and looks like one too. The Lightning and Maverick are definitely back-to-back home runs for Ford. The consumers have definitely spoken with all of the orders before ever even seeing one in person in the case of both models. Now, just offer one with a smaller screen and more knobs and switches at the $35k range and we are golden.
The Xl and XLT model comes standard with the current 12 inch screen in F-150s and the XLT can option this one. I think Lariat and platinum come standard with the vertical mega screen. I’d go XLT with extended range and the Normal 12 inch screen with physical hvac and stereo buttons for the win.
100000%. That is why I am not even looking at EVs because of their design. Now my interest will be peaking if more automakers make the EVs look "normal"
Base model starts under $40k, has a smaller (still big though) screen and buttons and knobs for climate control etc. I really like the base model, it's a pity it's not available with the bigger battery. Maybe later.
I love that not only is this the cheapest electric truck out currently, but it's also the most complete with features that will actually get used and doesn't worry about removable glass roofs or weird cargo tunnels. The few odd features it does have are practical, like the powersharing thing or having more household outlets than my first apartment. Now hopefully we get an electric Maverick
You honestly think that having to pay over $4000 (plus your own electrician's fees, probably well over $6000 all-in-all) just to have the opportunity to tie up your vehicle to your home to power it in case of a power-out? And over $10,000 more for the vehicle itself, and a lot more then later on in taxes and your utility bill? Instead of just $300 for a generator and you can still use your vehicle during a power out, or about $200 more in taxes/utility bills for the company/state to take car of the issue...
I'm amazed at how thoughtful the design of this truck is. With the exception of the interior screen (some regular buttons for a few things would be nice), this truck is the definition of utility.
People with different skills could use a truck like this to make a lot of money and make their work easier. I for example do mobile mechanic work, and "handyman" stuff. Power tools all charged every time you show up to work. Could carry a water tank power washer system for mobile car detailing. So much potential I look forward to people using in creative ways, and hopefully myself eventually.
They’ll do really well with this approach. People who actually use their trucks are going to be much more likely to buy one of these than a radical looking “futuristic” truck.
The Ford Lightning is better than any other truck in the world. I mean, nobody can argue otherwise. There is nothing that comes close to this for the price, not even a diesel or gas truck. With 572 horsepower on tap, and 900 ft lbs of torque, and no transmission to burn up, it makes more sense to use this truck for work, as compared to an extremely unreliable diesel. Diesel trucks last a long time, but sometimes they break, and when their engine breaks they cost $8,000 to repair. Diesels do break down, sometimes they blow head gaskets, or the transmission can burn up. The electric truck just has less moving parts to break or wear out, and they have a ridiculous 8 year drivetrain warranty!
@@drippgxd I’m on my second ram 1500. The reason there’s so many is bc they’re cheap and offer a lot for their price. On average in my state, a ram 1500 express is about $30k (30,000 miles or less) whereas a ford at the same trim level runs anywhere from 33-35k. Yes it’s a small price gap but this is just the average on what I’ve seen and I may or may not be obsessed with finding deals
I feel like this is going to be the real turning point for EVs in America. The F-150 is the most popular vehicle in the country and there is a huge market for pickups. Like Ford said, this truck is going to bring a lot of non-EV buyers into that sector and I really hope that this truck normalizes the idea of owning an EV as just a good car and not as a specialty luxury item. Now just waiting on some affordable EV options below 40k.
I agree, I’ve made similar statements to people. To me, we’re looking at the model T of electrics. It’s not the first, but it will be what normalizes it.
The practically score includes seating capacity and cargo and usability. Being a truck, it has an open bed and only 5 seats, which brings down the score.
I would figure the capability to back-charge your house during a blackout alone would bump up the practicality to a 10, even with the relatively small bed.
You'd think the value score would be higher too since it is the cheapest electric pickup, and one of the cheapest ev's. All the features for that pricing? Come on
It will be a 10 for soccer moms and city cowboys. When they get an electric F450 Dually that can tow 30,000 lbs for 200 miles, I'll be first in line. Probably wont happen in my lifetime though. I'm in the twilight years
This truck will be the biggest game changer in EV's hands down. More people buy F-150's than any other vehicle in NA. This thing takes what was already an amazing vehicle and makes it godlike.
Pickup trucks are the perfect platform for going electric IMO. Most people who have one are just driving it around town or to jobsites. They don't need crazy range to roadtrip, just good enough and good features
Yes and no. Many of us have trucks to tow a horse trailer, camper, toy hauler, and many other setups in the 10000 lbs + range. This truck simply won't work to do all those weekend activities and adventure. We simply can't use it with our horses and gooseneck trailer, over 10K lbs
@@toonj64 In my opinion, most pickup truck owners do not tow much at all and if they do it’s very rare. I doubt an electric truck that can haul a gooseneck will ever exist until engineers figure out a better battery solution over lithium batteries.
@@TSL73 I think what you'll see in the short to medium term is trailers that have batteries built in. Airstream just debuted a concept camper with built in power and even a small motor to let you maneuver it on its own. Obviously they wouldn't be able to compete, price-wise, with a $3000 basic cargo trailer. But given the fuel economy hit that gas trucks take when towing, a trailer that costs double up front would still pay for itself pretty quickly.
@@toonj64 I've never seen a fifth-wheel in a light-duty truck like an F-150. (There might be a few but they would be the rare exceptions.) People who do heavy-duty towing buy heavy-duty trucks. (Like an F-250, F-350, or F-450)
@@Decenium This is a pickup truck. A work vehicle. It serves a very generic purpose. You can't make it a specialty vehicle otherwise you'll alienate your entire customer base.
My last two trucks have been Tacomas, a great little truck for light loads. This Lightning seems to be a well designed truck and I'll seriously think about getting one, but I'm not spending $90k on the top model. I'd have a hard time (mentally speaking) with loading it full of garden compost or trash for the landfill. Oh and my 2012 Tacoma has an electrical outlet in the bed of the truck and I've used it with work lights and even a sawzall. Great review Doug, thanks!
This is the best all-around EV in the market right now. Aftermarket bed accessories already available now. The insane crazy frunk. 300+ miles for the long range version. Great acceleration. Comfortable interior. Insane practicality, usability… work site stuff camping stuff family hauler. It’s so cool.
A great first effort by Ford to make an electric pickup. Competent design, the front storage area is incredibly convenient and practical. People are going to get very frustrated that they can't get one due to the chip shortage, and the fact that this has a lot of battery inside, which is also supply constrained.
Ford will sacrifice all of it's other product lines to get these Lightnings out the door. This is a make or break moment for Ford and you better bet they're willing to do whatever it takes to make this a success.
It’ll be a few years until these are readily available. I would like to see it look even closer to a normal F150. For now EVs are a novelty and people want others to know it’s something different. I’ll want one that looks the same as the gas trucks. I’m guessing that’ll be about 10 years, I can wait.
I'm pretty amazed i'm actually waiting for an EV to come into production. The practicality and convinience gimmicks are amazing. Ofc every EV could power a house, but which other carmaker would design their own converter for that?
Engineer here, you noticed that the ride of the suspension feels different, and I can tell you why. The TLDR is that the lightning both weighs more *and* has less lift capacity. The Lightning is configured to lift 2,000 lbs and weighs 6500+ pounds while a typical equvalent would be configured to lift 3,200 pounds and weighs around 55-5700 pounds. This makes the relative acceptable weight range of a regular F-150 around 50-60% of the vehicles weight while the Lightnings range is only 30% of its weight. This means that Ford can equip the Lightning with suspensions that are closer to their capacities, which means that they will be less stiff (and therefore less jarring) to deflection. Combined this with a lower center of mass (which reduces body roll and a few other factors) and tada, the best handling F-150 on the market. To counter this, the first 500-1,000 pounds you load a regular F-150 with will typically improve its ride quality.
@@michaelfoulkes9502 no, they have an 1800 pound payload over the rear axle, typically the front suspension adds about 1,200 lbs capacity, but Ford doesn't count that in it's ratings because most end users don't. I worked out the combined figure for the lightning and the F-150 using the average of the rear range (2400 lbs) and the minimum front capacity.
The cyber truck was the first to be announced and we still don’t have any more info than the concept model. Could have been first to market but they sure screwed the pooch on that one
at this point the cybertruck concept has been around long enough that it actually looks a little dated (hell the word "cyber" is itself hokey at this point; the word is never used anymore outside US government internet security circles, kinda like "information superhighway") i would not be surprised at all if the whole program gets scrapped before it ever happens
@@walterw2 honestly, it reminds me quite a bit of the DeLorean. A dated design also obviously. “Boxy and futuristic design with a stainless steel outer surface and a promise of breakthrough efficiency” If nature thought boxy designs were more aerodynamic, birds would look a lot different. I’m sure it will come to market, but likely underperform in range tests and start at an eye-watering price.
I think the trick is that the "platform" (chassis and powertrain) is new but most of the stuff sitting on top of that new platform is existing F-150 or Mustang Mach-E. That said, I think there'd be a good chunk of that new platform which is Mustang Mach-E or uses design and engineering knowledge developed on Mach-E. A great result and pleasantly surprising buyer profile data for the F-150 Lightning.
I'm not surprised that so many of its buyers are non-truck owners. While the bed was very useful and practical for many things a lack of a trunk wasn't, this has both and that's a game changer for many people. I can also see this truck becoming very popular as a workhorse for business, extended storage + a huge battery to charge and use tools will save a lot of money and time in certain situations. All that for a good price to boot.
Haha, as if it's impossible to power and charge tools in an ICE truck... God, lemmings really don't know how to use their brains. Just lazily watch youtube videos and believe every bit of marketing b***sh** you hear...
Soooo.... going back and forth between full size trucks and mid size SUVs and doing plenty of off roading, I think modern full-size trucks are a tad too big. And especially too big for city life. Make an E-truck halfway between the size of a rivian and an F150 and that would be perfect.
@@davewilson7602 I think ford should make a stripped out work truck version. It'll probably look stupid expensive for a basic truck to most people. But even at 50000 for this for fleets would still be killer. If the truck does even just a mere 20000km a year it would probably be paid off within 10 years even assuming absolutely terrible ev conditions (high electric costs, cold low range inefficient running conditions) and assuming that for some reason gas would be doing better in the same conditions and gas costong less then it currently does.
There was one channel who reviewed a base model; I forgot who it was. It doesn't have the rear light bar or sliding rear window and it has a much smaller infotainment screen.
I've commented this on a ton of Doug's videos, but damn i appreciate it so much that he puts metric units on screen. Keep up the awesome work Doug ! Mad respect !
I just bought my first EV, a 2025 F150 Lightning. Lariat edition. Wonderful vehicle. Came back to watch this review and I agree with everything except for the range. It's way, way less. But we're retired, we have a home charger. We won't be using this for road trips so it's perfect! And it's FAST and quiet. Love it!
Impressive! Now, if only Ford of Europe would build an electric Fiesta (traditionally one of the best-selling cars in the UK) for the same price as a petrol/diesel Fiesta. Ford seems to be being left behind in the market segment it once dominated here - its long-time rival, the Vauxhall Corsa, outsold it last year for the first time. That Corsa is available as an EV, as is its Stellantis cousin, the Peugeot 208. Ford of America seem keen to retain its traditional customers, while gaining new ones, with this Lighting. Ford of Europe should take more notice.
I'm sure Ford of Europe would eventually do something similar at some point. Since Europe already has the Ford Mustang Mach-E, I'm sure Ford will have more EV soon. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mustang going to be electric in the future, there's also a rumor Dodge Challenger would be electric after 2024. Dodge Challenger will be discontinued in 2024.
2021 was actually the first year since 1971 that a Ford model didn't top the UK's sales charts. They've really dropped the ball when it comes to modernising.
I don't mind touch screens in cars so long as certain things remain easily accessible. I HATE the Tesla Model 3 approach, where everything is in the center screen... EVERYTHING, including wiper controls and speedometer. I like the fact that the screen in the Lightning has permanent spots for things like volume and climate controls.
The smartest move Ford made was making it essentially an F-150. It's going to feel comfortable to a lot of people and the they're going to keep costs down by having the doors, seats, bed, etc. all the same as the ICE F-150. Once fully available, this will be wildly popular.
I don't think so man. People generally just like driving gas powered cars. They're more reliable. Don't gotta worry about having to charge your vehicle in the middle of the day. You know what your truck is capable of pulling vs. This where its like damn idk if i can pull that. Nobody is use to electric vehicles yet. Not enough of them in the road

I had to pass. $20k will buy many years worth of gas, even at todays prices.
Whenever "gas" equivalency becomes the breaking value proposition then you know you're not ready for the entirely new world of EV transportation. Here's the truth, an EV platform can do things that an ICE platform cannot, and never will be able to fuel savings aside. Tesla figured out early on that there goal wasn't to merely provide an EV version of the standard 4 door sedan because there would forever be the Volkswagen TDI crowd saying "but I get 50 mpg and its $25K cheaper than the model S". When a Tesla test drive includes a demonstration of the key fob alone bringing the car out of the parking stall/garage with know one inside, or Summon mode where the car finds you in the parking lot, or pre heating the cabin in your garage, or over the air software updates, you know its not about fuel savings, its about a whole new technology platform. Personally, my BMW i3 does none of the Tesla stuff, it just saves me nearly $400 a month in gas, while breaking a life long ridiculous addiction to gasoline, that's all it does. Ford is doing as little as possible to impress people at this point, they know their consumer base well.

At this stage in history there are applications that demand gas or diesel motors, but where I live most truck owners don't use them for anything but daily drivers and the occasional dump run. For those purposes this truck has no equal in its price range.
A normal gas door style charge port door. THANK GOD. Everyone else is motorizing theirs. The charge port happens to be a rather important item on an EV. ZERO need to complicate its access. Thank you Ford for keeping it simple.
I don't get the need to make it motorized. I mean, yeah they look and move cool, but it isn't like a big heavy trunk where it helps to have automatic opening, because it's just a small little door in the side of the car! In fact, i'd say its more comfortable to open it with your hand than waiting for the mehanism to do it for you.
@@ixcutamp8059 I do like it in tesla, where they have a button on the charge cable to pop it open. Earlier ones weren't powered either, just spring loaded.
Has any other reviewer explained the manual front hood release feature? That's kind of a big little useful feature if the worst happens. FYI, most washing machines are normal 120v. It's the dryers that typically need 240v.
Are you talking about an external release on the body, the emergency/kidnap release inside the "frunk" itself, or the release strap inside the cab? I thought it was weird that the kidnap release was electronic when I was about 99% sure it had to be mechanical.
I WANT ONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in my opinion the lightning is the BEST electric truck out there !!! once I get my funds together , I will be going to the lightning factory and custom order me one ; want to get one with charging ports on both sides of the truck , see if I can get the truck lifted so I could get two extend range battery packs - separated by something like an aluminum cage to allow airflow around the batteries so as to air cool them and try to get the bed length to at least 6 feet maybe 6.5 feet long to get my custom made conversion truck top on it
Assuming dealers don't mark up the $39,975 starting price, yes. $32,475 with the $7,500 federal EV incentive. If not, it won't change much. It would be just another unaffordable EV truck.
This truck is game changing. I can see people working in the trades making good use of this trunk, especially with the frunk and generator capabilities
It's only game changing for people not intelligent enough to pay a few hundred dollars for a generator or bother to ask for the site to provide electricity (in all of my time I've never had a site where we can't get electricity, and only a few times did someone have to arrange a connection from a neighbouring home/company/site or a generator just for us). I guess intelligent people just get through life a lot easier, with a lot less costs. In this case like $300 vs. $15000.
@@pistonburner6448 I mean having this truck means you don’t need to lug around a generator and go and buy the fuel for said generator. Also, you’re lucky that you haven’t been to a job site where power wasn’t an issue. This truck will definitely have its uses for people trying to jump into EV

A farriers forge uses 2.4 kw at 220v, this thing can push 9.6 kw. Big welders use 12 kw tho, so working folks should really do research before buying. Excited to see these around!

I bought a '23 Lariat ER and absolutely love it. The electric side of things is a home run for so much of the truck, but it brings limitations that can legitimately be deal-breakers for some. And it's pricey. But if somebody rips it off I'm taking the insurance check down to my dealer and buying another one just like this one.
That is crazy it has all them outlets. It would be nice when you need to charge batteries and power large tools especially indoors in like warehouse settings where running a gas generator isn't allowed.
I have learned recently that among non enthusiasts, people really don't understand what goes into the price of a car. I had to explain in detail why the compass trailhawk is different than the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and it hit me that marketing works so well that people really just don't understand what a platform is. The lightning has totally nailed it by the looks of things but as you say, there is just no way to compare it to a product which is double the price and aiming at a totally different market.

Someone should have told Chevy that to avoid the Bolt fiasco.
The same is true of Toyota hybrids (probably others). It is good on cold days to have a lot more cranking power from the big battery (yes, those batteries don’t provide the range in cold weather that they do in warmer).

Agreed - I’m not at EV guy, but I think this thing is going to dominate the market. Ford understands that the majority of truck buyers want it to actually look like a truck, and they are also able to take advantage of the economies of scale of already making so many ICE trucks that can share many components.

And over $10,000 more for the vehicle itself, and a lot more then later on in taxes and your utility bill?

Lower trims have a screen half the size, with lots of physical controls beneath. I wish it was available on the higher ones too...
People with different skills could use a truck like this to make a lot of money and make their work easier. I for example do mobile mechanic work, and "handyman" stuff.

@@WildcatWarrior15 yup
It’ll be a few years until these are readily available. I would like to see it look even closer to a normal F150. For now EVs are a novelty and people want others to know it’s something different. I’ll want one that looks the same as the gas trucks. I’m guessing that’ll be about 10 years, I can wait.
I'm pretty amazed i'm actually waiting for an EV to come into production. The practicality and convinience gimmicks are amazing. Ofc every EV could power a house, but which other carmaker would design their own converter for that?
Ford made an electric ranger all the way back in 2000... not a real truck but that was there first actual effort.
You could’ve fabricated every facet of this information, but this sounds smart AF, so I believe you.
@@Steve01362 thanks... I think?
One thing I forgot to mention was that the battery would likely increase the stiffness of the vehicle as well.
Most F-150’s have an 1800 pound payload.
The F 150 lightning has four wheel independent suspension. and has wider framerails which gives it superior handling.

The cyber truck was the first to be announced and we still don’t have any more info than the concept model. Could have been first to market but they sure screwed the pooch on that one
at this point the cybertruck concept has been around long enough that it actually looks a little dated (hell the word "cyber" is itself hokey at this point; the word is never used anymore outside US government internet security circles, kinda like "information superhighway")

To be fair, Ford of America cut it's entire line up of passenger sedans/hatchbacks. They're only selling pickup trucks, SUVs, and Mustangs now.
I'd just like an EV Ford Ranger, really
An EV Fiesta was shown back in 2013 called the Fiesta eWheelDrive but I don't think it caught on because info on it is extremely limited

The over/under for Doug saying the words "front trunk" in the first 8mins was 164....he blew that number outta the water 😂😂
Front trunk front trunk front trunk red rum red rum red rum
(Even with skyrocketing car prices in mind…) It’s amazing how $60-70k is the “bulk” of orders… I make a good living as a nurse but unless I was sitting on triple my salary, I couldn’t afford one of the “bulk” builds
You missed a cool quirk of the front trunk; that storage space under the trunk floor can double as a cooler. Fill it with ice and water and beer. It has a drain plug in the bottom.
21:20 Doug the type of guy to emphasize “Big, adult, human people” because he knows humans aren’t alone in the universe.
Ford getting this truck out in a year is amazing. Another data point supporting the idea that Ford will survive the EV transition.
They've been developing it for 3+ yrs, but just started showing it last year
That’s true… fingers crossed that they have their battery management figured out and don’t end up with huge recalls like GMs volt
@@thetumbleweedkid284 You mean the Bolt. And the recall wasn't much of a hassle at all for my wife's when we got that battery recall - The dealer kept it for two days and strangely gave her a V6 Camaro convertible as a loaner. This is her 2nd Chevy Bolt and they're just honest transportation that wont break the bank, no complaints from us.
@@thetumbleweedkid284 The Bolt used a different style battery pack design that was more prone to problems.
Plus Ford already has battery experience with the Mach E, and they've made further improvements

Looks awesome ..... time to put my order in!

man, what a beauty. Super cool design.
@5:22 Doug is the type of guy to suggest you can use the household outlet on your F-150 to power a jackhammer :-)
120v jackhammers do exist. They are great for smaller inside construction work.
And also he’s the type of guy to use a washing machine in a pickup truck bed for some reason
Awesome job, Doug.
Your channel always surprises us.
*keep rocking*
Gotta admit, seems Ford knocked it out of the park, truly. Actually "making enough" being their real issue seems almost like a non-issue for them so long as resources are available. I mean they are the company that revolutionized car manufacturing, so I think they can handle it.
Sensitive touch screens in a moving truck. Would seem stressful, try to adjust climate, hit bump and you change radio or whatever else🤔
The idea of having this as a "backup generator" for ones home is very appealing.
Till you’re stuck without power AND transportation for two weeks after a bad storm.
@@HonkeyKongH and you could use a small gasoline/ propane engine generator to trickle charge the truck... It's not an answer to every problem, just a few.
@@rhubarbpie2027 Why wouldn't I just use the generator to run my house then?
@@HonkeyKongH Fucking thank you! It boggles my mind people thing that'a a cool feature, I could see using my truck as a 'rolling battery' bank for small jobs: say an air compressor for airing down tires or inflating water toys at the lake. But by in large I wouldn't want to use up my valuable 230 mile range if the power was going to be out for three days.
@@Roushfan5 it's an alternative.
I am absolutely in love with this car. Simple. That’s all I want from my electrics cars and the price is unbeatable
This will never sell for sticker in this climate
7:10 Holy hell, the trim levels can more than DOUBLE the price of the vehicle?! That's insane
...still cheaper than then Model S. Remember the competition, people just looking for a regular old truck will go for the base model. These higher trims are competing more with Tesla, which has cars well above 6 figures.
Which is already a thing amongst gas powered trucks. Base price of the f150 is 30k and can go well over 70k. It’s obnoxious and no reason for it other than greed by the manufacturers
@@thejuiceisloose8703 I don’t see how it’s greedy, I wanted a f150 as my daily but I was coming out of a Range Rover so I got the limited and got a very nice interior and more features for less then most luxury cars. If someone doesn’t wanna spend 70k plus on a truck they can just not
Not an ev guy but i love the grills on the lightning trucks. The video doesnt do em justice. Last october i went to a ford to buy a 2018 f150 xlt, and they had a lightning inside on display and i literally stopped and stared at that grill. Its gorgeous.
Not the biggest fan of electric vehicles but I saw one of these in person the other day and it actually does look pretty nice, and that frunk is pretty darn cool lol
This is great to hear that this is such a great option for such a reasonable price. This means that Tesla is gonna have to compete with the price, range, and performance
Tbh considering this a reasonable price is just buying into exactly what they want you to believe. $40k for the lowest end model isn’t really a great deal. Who’s going to want the truck without the longest range available? So you’re talking $70k. That’s not great.
And I doubt that would happen, it seems that the Cybertruck is aiming at the same luxury truck market as the Rivian and Hummer.
The cheapest cybertruck was listed at 39.900 USD, so price is probably pretty comparable...
@@claudiobizama5603 Not really, the base Cybertruck is supposedly the same price as the Lightning with likely more standard features like other Teslas. However, the base price really doesn't matter because the large majority of people spend much more than 40 grand on trucks nowadays.
@@AFpaleoCon It's 4WD and comes with more features than the fleet F-150. $40,000 makes sense.
If we had this in New Zealand and if i had the money the base version would be perfectly fine for me. I like this more than the other Ev trucks.
I've been waiting forever for this, my god.
Hey Doug, the 12v battery is accessible through that panel in the rear of the frunk.
The value of my 1998 f150 lighting just went up!! Thanks Doug
ugh, yeah it has nothing to do with the supposed pandemic, stimulus checks, panic buying, chip shortages/new car lack of supply, etc you keep thinking that there Mathias you go girl
I was waiting for someone to comment that 🤣
This is a modified F-150 platform where GM Silverado EV BT1 is a EV from ground up next year.
Wait for Ford 2025 redesign.
The Ford F-150 Lightning is already being promised a redesign for the 2025 model year. Reuters mentioned this when discussing Ford’s production plans for the Lightning.
Bruh look at this doode
There was no '98 Lightning. '93-'95 and '99-'04.
25:35 Isn't the good ride due to the independent rear suspension?
believe it or not but i drive a city bus and our company had just got two electric busses and since i been driving it it really makes me want to get a electric truck
holy cow, 15 cups of coffee , 4 hours sleep, running late for the next stop ...2 hour review packed into 30 minutes. nice job Doug
Certainly the most interesting EV I've ever seen in my life. The F-150 is a cornerstone vehicle of America, I have no doubt a lot of people will be gunning for these with record-high gas prices. Talk about great timing for Ford! Now we'll see if they can match the reliability of the non-electrified classic. I'd certainly be interested in if I had 70K or so to burn (to get the upgraded model with extended range)
Cybertruck is better
@@Depto228 cybertruck is a joke. Just a marketing tool to increase teslas fan boy cult and stock prices. The closest you can get is a hot wheel or RC version its not even being produced.
@@southsidehatch it’s okay, imma buying it tho if itsnot too much.
Ford knocked-it-out-of-the-park on this one. Amazing truck! Curious how the 4x4 is off-road.
Even though this truck can go off road, but with just about an 8 inch clearance, I'd say you may get stuck.
Doug, that "household-style charger" is more commonly known as an "outlet." Or an AC outlet if you want to be more specific.
