In honesty, I think the second take is best. Vegeta sounds strongest, the dialogue exchanges between all three characters flows most naturally, and Vegeta's "shut up" at the end is both fitting and funny.

The only part that sounded natural was the shut up at the end. Otherwise it sounds like he's forcing himself to do a deep voice, which makes him seem less intimidating.
@@MostlyPonies1 Why I like the japanese version better. All the character sound pretty natural. The english dubs sound way too forced, almost like those who are new to voice acting.
The last one probably feels the most natural for me. What Krillin and Gohan are saying makes much more sense compared to the other two. Vegeta also sounds like his voice is being less forced. His second voice sounds like he's trying hard to make himself deeper.
@@Pokemonleafmon I disagree. They provide almost too much exposition in the third version, as if over-explaining things for the sake of the viewer. And I think the "edge" Vegeta shows in the second in more appropriate, as he doesn't exactly like Krillin and Gohan yet. Performance wise, it's more-or-less a wash, but I think the second take is most enjoyable overall.

Fun fact: in the manga, Vegeta explain that it’s his armour that’s the older model. He had to use it because it was the only kind that would fit him.
Kai had Vegeta say that about his armor when he found it in Freeza’s ship.

@@hurtjuice8128 Stretching to any size doesn't mean one size fits all. You can take small armor and stretch it over a larger body (although you probably get less coverage), but you can't take large armor and form fit it to a small body.
My guess is vegeta found larger armor and he couldn't wear it because it went past his waist and wasn't form fitting. That kind of thing might make the armor less effective or slightly restrict his movement. He needed small armor.

In the first dub, Chris Sabat was trying to emulate Brian Drummond's Vegeta because he was continuing from where the Ocean Dub left off.
God that ocean dub got rerun so many times that it became the defacto dub for me. I never watched enough of the Funimation dub passed the frieza saga.

Nah, the Kai one seems perfect. It sounds like Vegeta is talking to Krillin like he is an idiot for asking that, because it's obvious. Plus, it's a 1:1 translation of the original script.
JackOfen Keep in mind the script for the dub is never going to be 1:1. because the syllables for certain Japanese words don’t line up with English words. But they tried to get it as accurate as possible

It was a pretty dumb question. They literally show Krillin recalling Great Ape Vegeta who was wearing the gloves and boots. If it wasn't the same material it certainly has the exact same properties. The only answer more acceptable than what Vegeta gave would be a solid "duh," or a dismissive "dumbass."

Well, the first one was from right after Funimation took over from the Ocean Dub. Chris was attempting to mimic Brian Drummond's delivery back then.
Then, over time, he developed his own voice for Vegeta and that's the "DBZ" remaster.
The Kai remaster uses a script that's more accurate to the original lines in Japanese.

I imagine this is what translators are on about when people ever so lightly change the words in a sub and dub to get a point across without losing the message the scene was supposed to convey. In all three versions we get the main point across that vegeta gives the amour and explains how it works but the attitude changes how scene flows and how hostile the Sayain is.
It is exactly for example on 1:37 he goes from saying the gloves and shoes do not compose of the same material to 4:44 where he says it does.

That's because he was. Back in the 90s, we got Ocean voices originally, up until the episode when Goku landed on Namek. We waited like two years before we finally got new episodes, and along with them came shitty new voices.

thats because the early funimation dub they basically asked chris sabot and Sean Schemmel to imitate as best they could the ocean dub actors, but then they realized the ocean dub is mostly trash. but it has enough good moments to allow the kids of the late 80s and early 90s to have rose tinted glasses about.
LemonGrab Except the voice work was mostly fantastic. The issues came from the script and censorship Saban forced upon Ocean. And this is coming from someone who didn't even grow up with DBZ.

I love how Sabat gradually evolved to just doing his normal voice for Vegeta (and Piccolo even more so). I don’t know about Sonny Strait, but Krillin differently sounded better with time too
You LOVE that? They used to sound distinct and fitting to each character. Sabat's voiceworks is terrible now.

Over time though, we see Sabat develop his style as he gradually changes from raspy Vegeta, akin to the Ocean dub, to a deeper more toned Vegeta in the mid 2000s, which is fascinating. Whether one likes the old or the new (I'm ok with both) is fine, but the changes he made to it are interesting to see, and imo, having the two to compare and contrast is better than having just one alone.

@@esosa7725 For ease on initial equip; being able to stretch to almost any size is beneficial, but it's still gonna be really awkward to put on if its default state is half your size.

The second is what I grew up with. The third (which I like as well) sounds like vegeta but it also sounds like he put some more of his iconic voice into it kinda like Zoro and those two characteristics together compliment one another quite well.

The second one is the best in my opinion. To me it feels like the gruff aspect of Vegeta's voice was missing in kai. Not only that but Gohan's voice in kai is a step down I feel.

I prefer the more milder Vegeta. I've Always preferred his story, and the Kai dub of his tone makes him more of a "humanized" character.

The Kai version had the best acting of the 3, but Sabat's voice started to drift into Piccolo territory. It was getting a little too deep.

Derrick/Fusions I remember watching this as a child on Toonami. It was like Vegeta was maturing. Saiyan saga was ocean dub, made the switch during the Frieza saga, then by Buu saga it’s that raspy deep voice lol. It was cool.

Voices sounded the best in the Kai dub, and the script was probably the most accurate in that one... I do miss hearing the line "I'll come over there and force them down for you!", though.
Second one is my fav. Third he sounds too much like Piccolo, and Gohan sounds way too much like a girl.
Because Kai Kid Gohan was voiced by a girl. Also I rather liked Kai.

Judging based off the voice acting alone Kai has the best acting. It doesn't even sound like he's acting, which is the type of immersion you want. It may NOT have the best music or dialogue, but then again I was talking about the voice acting alone.
You can tell overtime Vegeta's voice changed a lot and for the better. His acting got better too. I like Brian Drummond but honestly Brian is only good as Saiyan and Namek Saga Vegeta. It's not because I'm used to it. Brian does a better Vegeta when Vegeta was younger. His higher pitched voice and personality in the early saga matched more closely. Vegeta didn't look the same either. Vegeta's eyes were rounder back then, not nearly as muscular and quite a bit shorter. Now that Vegeta is taller and more muscular, Chris's voice fits way more.

Yabuturtle I heard a rumor that S1 Goku (power pole and Kaioken) and Vegeta (Galic Gun and Ape) (both base) might make it to FighterZ. If they do this I really hope Sabat does something cool and find a way to get Brian Drummond to do the role. It'd be super fan service and would let him have a creative influence on the character indirectly.
I don't like his voice in kai, its unn aturally forced and way too posh.
I don't know, I think Drummond could have managed if didn't phone it in in the Blue waters dubs for Canada.
@@SensuixShinobu7 His voice being posh was kinda the point. He's a prince and Vegeta's Japanese voice has a bit of a regal tone to it so Sabat probably did the same for his Vegeta for Kai. Not to mention it makes him even more different to Goku who talks a bit like a "dumb hick" in the Japanese version and the manga.
Keeps getting better in my opinion. Especially the actual dialogue and music.
watchingrob Well unfortunately Kenji Yamamoto turned out to be plagiarizing most of his music. While in some cases this was fine due to him ripping off public domain music (note the similarity to Ravel's Bolero in the third take - its title is even The Gods' Bolero) there were some where he clearly ripped off copyrighted material, so in the end all his work was removed. Shame because it was so good... although that was probably because he stole so much :P

+dynamix_ 956 You're not kidding. Vegeta's voice in the original Funimation dub sounds like a good compromise. While he may sound like a "Brian Drummond" imitation, it's better than his later Vegeta voices; as they don't sound as good as the one he had before. He doesn't have to be a growling jackass to make him sound cool; he's cool for being who he is.
Robert Walker his Drummond impression just cannot emote very well though. Plus, when listening to Vegeta with that version of Sabat's voice for him, I can't help but wish Drummond was doing it instead.
