I find an extra bit of humor in this song. Back in the day, several of my friends in school considered this to be their personal protest song--for everything. They tended to get quite loud and animated when it was playing. I always liked it. But, not being as contrary about some things, I never thought of it as my mission. I never read or heard anything about what Jonathan Edwards had in mind when he sang the song. But, the war and the draft always came to mind for me. Just this one song added so much to what was going on back then, IMO--the war, hippies, drugs, sit ins. You name it. To me, it's like calling Classical Gas by Mason Williams a one-hit wonder. One was all it took.
I saw this precious soul in the 70’s, his voice was a bit more mature , it was only him and his guitar and he was amazing. I had been to 100’s of concerts and he was top 3!
.... October 9, 2023 ... day after Bret died ... thank you for being there for our friend. ... and thanks for your contributions to my life's soundtrack.
This great song has flooded my mind over the years as I cross paths with many this song can apply to…you can’t even run your own life, I’ll be damned if you’ll run mine! Brilliant.
Thank you for uploading this EXPERIENCE… I loved and sang along to this song when it was HUGE on the radio. But at 10 in 1971, my parents wouldn’t let me go to concerts, so I never got to see him live… Thanks for this. And a boatload of memories…
I was 5 and loved it too!!! Still do, I loved listening to the radio and singing all of the words to this and of "American Pie" By Don Mclean, came out that same year. I knew the words to that one too although the radio used to leave out the 'Helter Skelter in the summer swelter" verse because the song was so darn long, but that didn't stop me from learning the verse when on occasion they did play the entre song.
Barry Richards tv show was almost certainly in the DC market. Well, maybe by '73 it WAS Baltimore. But he was a major force as top 40, then white soul, and finally early hippie dj and concert promoter in the DC market.
This song just popped into my head to day. Last time I heard it was when it was popular on the radio. Had to hear it again. Then realized I had to find a live performance because this man's singing is incredible. And *oda*n if these lyrics aren't everything.
Song is Perfect for today as much as I love this song it’s sad that we still relate to it with what’s going on today thank you for the great song may arise a patriots
It's one "thing" to get up and play a tune , in time / on key and know volume increases and fades , but to keep a tight rhythm and stay in key / in time ( AND know your volume cues) - THAT, is talent!
I knew there was a reason this song was my earworm today going into election day 2020. "He can't even run his own life, I'll be damned if he'll run mine!"
AFTER "Biden & Harris won" the election (BULLCRAP!) this song just came into my mind after many years....its very pertinent now! And, the sun will shine again!!!
“Workin starts to make me wonder where, the fruits of what I do are goin” Jonathan and this song are talking about communism/anarchism not some weird conservatives libertarian idea.
@@victoriacometh5168 girl this song is against trump, against Biden, and against everything you strangely hold dear. This song is for the socialist/anarchist/communist
No dancers, no auto tune, no bullshit...this guy is the real thing....his singing voice is impeccable....
I met him and heard him sing and play at The Birchmere in Virginia (a small acoustic- perfect venue)_. The real deal for sure.
And no computes. Just great musicianship
This song could go on another five minutes and I would still be happy.
He spoke for an entire Nation and the song is still so relevant today! Great Job!
And still is today
He didn't speak for me. KCMO class of '75.
@@keythdanielsen9315 LOL, he spoke for a nation at the time this song was released, and spoke for you after the song came out.
@@patrickr.300 Yep, he said that in his post...."...so relevant today!".
Exactly what did he say for the entire nation? What was this "noblest" of song lyrics overthinkers?
One the greatest "strummers" ever.
I grew up in the 60s/70s and this is the first time I'm seeing the singer of this song.
This song reminds me of my older brother who tried to be. My father. He was a heroin addict and an alcoholic this song reminds me of him
Happy 75th birthday, Jonathan Edwards!

Live version! Way too cool.
Great artist...
Great voice great song. What more could you want? Thank you.
Thanks for posting!!! The amazing Jon Edwards!!!
To show how times have changed, the AM stations in Kansas City used to blip out the "damned" part of the song.

Jonathan Edwards, the only folk rocker to share a name with a Puritan theologian 🤗.

To bad he had to hurry thru the song : ) my dad used to say if you have to speed to get there then leave early
Wait... People used to know how to play music???
A bit like Dan Fogelberg. Àlways liked Sunshine. But he disappeared from the airways that I knew.
Never liked the song, but he gave a fantastic live performance. First time seeing what he looked like.
Way too dark. Can't see any of it.
