- An April 28, 2016 interview with singer, songwriter Jonathan Edwards prior to headlining Rolling Hills Radio Program in Jamestown N.Y. the radio program is hosted by Ken Hardley and heard on WRFA-LP(107.9 FM). Here Jonathan talks about the genesis of His hit song "Sunshine".
I was tear gassed protesting the Vietnam conflict when this came out. Two weeks later I was in the U.S. Army basic training. I distinctly remember singing this song over and over all through basics. It got me through it. I still love it, still sing it, and still listen to the original.
We are back in the same position guys fighting a war that isn’t ours. I hope you have found peace. Younger people respect you guys for not having a choice for what our government sent you into.
What a milestone of a song for the era
I met Jonathan last night at a hotel lounge in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. I went in to hear a local band & the only open seat was next to Jonathan. I didn't know who he was but we started talking & he told me his band had just finished a concert nearby. I asked if he had a business card for his band & he took one out & gave it to me. I asked him to sign it & he did. He asked which songs I sang & I told him, & I asked what songs his band did. He said Sunshine & suddenly I realized who he was. We talked for about an hour & then I had to leave. He is an elegant & awesome person.

When I played that song at summer camp, I got put on detention for singing "I'll be damned if he'll run mine." I was 12 years old, and "nice boys don't talk like that."
Jonathan Edwards song Sunshine had just come out and I had just been drafted. My parents were driving me to the Armed Forces Entrance Station and this song came on the radio. I listened and it suddenly seemed to be a song about my life on that day. Some man trying to run my life ( the government) and all is fair in love and war ( the army) but the sun did shine later and bells rang when I finished my time in the Army. Great song ! ! ! !

This song was the most influential song of my childhood. I used it for strength to detach from my dominant alcoholic father. It was because of the upbeat feel to the songs that I got away with playing it.
Funny, because it was song about anti war and anti establishment. It is a very catchy tune, I love it.
I'm 61 years old and heard this song come on the radio and it still inspires me, it fits the narrative today so well. I wish the 20 somethings could listen to it and get
inspired to go their own way and not get inline, there is just too much doom and gloom.
It's a brilliant song. Should be a classic.
I came of age in the 70’s and this song and about a couple dozen other songs became the memories that I and many people have of that era. So thankful to people like Mr. Edwards to transfer our thoughts and feelings of that period and put them into music.
He was a *really* cute guy when he was young & he STILL is! Love this song.
This song sparks memories of High School, great little tune. I still have the LP.
This song reminded of when my father was alive he is no longer with us but still does today. He was an alcoholic who felt like he could run peoples lives and it made me mad. He ended up having a heart attack while on one of his binges at age 55. Although seeing what kind of a mess his life was and how he died I learned what booze could do to you but i avoided it. Thus the words from this song sticks, how can he tell me how to run my life when he couldn't even run his.

Man, I was about 10 years old when I first heard this. I remember, even as a kid, I thought, "this guy is really mad at someone for trying to control him". That's about the last time I took well to someone trying to control Me :) I love this man for instilling in me the bull-headedness that has gotten me to 58 years so far! #Peace! #Love! To All!

Last night his song Carolina Caroline started playing in my head. I have not heard it in years. Played it oh, about 10 times. Love his interview. Wish I could have seen him live at a concert.

It's an anti-establishment song. I think of every politician, bureaucrat, and judge when I hear the two lines in the chorus "he can't even run his own life, I'll be damned if he runs mine" That applies to ALL the politicians!

He played across the street from me in Athens Ohio in 1972, or so. Think it was his girlfriends place. My friends and I used to hop trains and I can’t help but think his train song was inspired by us. Love the man!

His albums are flawless. I saw him in London, Ontario when he opened for Atomic Rooster, must have been 1970. Didn't much like Atomic Rooster. So happy to see him well.
It was an odd combination. There would be A.R. fans that woukdnt like him. I liked both.
The first thing I focused on were the lyrics. Just being home from Vietnam I could really dig it.
I as well Phillip. My last night in country (was looking forward to seeing my baby son for the first time) my unit was half overrun before we beat them back and off of our piece of red dirt.
I suppose perhaps like you this short, straight to the point grand and beautiful song hit a real chord in my being.
No more accepting what the government said was true as gospel. Question everything, take everything with a block of salt and be involved in whatever way possible to ensure I called the shots in my life.

He meant it as anti war because war was the number one meanest thing going on at that time...It now apples to every mean thing going on. Universal. "Buy" doesn't always involve money either. Rich people can hurt too. He wrote anti meanness and it endures today
Sunshine will always be relevant to working men who know that whether they claim to be capitalist or Communist they are all crooks enjoying a good life on someone else's nightmare. It's simple and has really good lyrics but I think it's a pro labor song.
It definitely has that aspect. I know almost every time I had a critical boss this song came to mind. Men and women on their 3-4 marriage, kids from one side of the country to another, and they want to tell ME how I should behave? Yeah, I'll be damned. #Peace!
Glad he listens to his muse . He has a good one. I am not into jumbo jumbo much .Heck it might be organic grey matter processes but who cares ? Getting a bouncy infectious melody like this & coming up with social conscious lyrics is a rare occurrence IMHO opinion and it made the song timeless .

Yeh, since the election I've been calling all three of the snowflakes -- Pelosi, Warren and Waters -- sunshine. So "Sunshine go away today... " is as good as line for them as any. How you libs can watch these idiots day after day without going nuts yourself is beyond me. Even after the swamp is drained, these three will rise from the mud like "It Came From the Swamp" and terrorize civilization until they are driven into electrical power lines.
He seems fairly humble and down to earth, but the interviewer is insufferable...
