Normally water collection systems use multiple tanks to settle out sediment and filtration. For a garden that would not be necessary. Use Pool Grade Hydrogen Peroxide to purify water, not chlorine. HP is good for your body in low levels. Get test strips and keep around 100ppm in your stored water. You may want to go lower for sensitive garden? It will neutralize pretty quickly on soil. Will lower after it works to kill bad stuff, so recheck and add more to keep at proper level. After that, it will stay. You don't have to cover the tank with HP because it works better with light. If you get enough rain over many months a small collection system will provide lots of water. Get a 2500 gal water tank or more. We are in the desert and the rain falls all at once so the collection system would have to be huge, so not practical for us. We have more than one source of very pure well water to fill our 2 2500 gal tanks.

I tried making my own first flush and resorted to removing it. I'm interested on updates on it.

So far so good, we just clean it once in a while and I removed the bottom for winter so it wouldn't freeze. But I'm pretty happy with it.
