What one thing people forget about the original deal is that Tampa Bay area hasn't seen a Major Hurricane in 100 years. On top of Milton, this was a 1 in 1000 year rainfall event. There is a metric for this. That event is quantified as 8 inches of rain in 3 hour. St. Pete got 9 inches in 3 hours, 5 of those inches they received in single hour prior to the roof falling. This wasn't just a hurricane, this was a hurricane Tampa never seen before in the modern era.
Exactly. Milton was the first direct hit to Tampa Bay in over 100 years and actually was predicted to be a little stronger when it made landfall. The timing of the hurricane, plus new St Pete council members, makes for a tough situation for the Rays to be in.
This is like buildings only being rated for 7.0/8.0 or below earthquakes in California. Even though it's only a question of "when" not "if" an earthquake above 8.0 will happen. It's much cheaper to not plan for worst-case scenarios. And that's what they did here.
@astropunk972 That was ALWAYS a foolish assumption on their part, because it relied on data related to THAT particular city, not the fact that Florida as a state is hurricane ground zero on the planet. Complete idiocy to think a major hurricane could never happen there.
Unfortunately, thanks to climate change, 100 and 1000 year storms are now annual occurrences… But don’t worry, the fossil fuel companies are working hard to pay off US politicians to continue to ignore the obvious problem!

I know using the threat of relocation to get shiny new stadium deals is a crucial tactic for the owners to keep their franchise values up, but with the ongoing A's debacle you'd think the MLB would be trying to tamp down any nonsense for the time being. If the MLB gets too much of reputation for being an untrustworthy partner, sooner or later some team is going to overplay their hand in one city and find out they aren't welcome anywhere else.
I think MLB in Florida to date has been a failure. Neither Miami nor Tampa Bay has ever been able to get decent attendance. One could argue the issue in Miami is the on field product, but the Rays attendance isn’t good even when the team is playing well.
Except when they brought in the Marlins that team won 2 world series pretty quick, plus a ton of teams have spring training down in FL so I don't think they plan on removing baseball from the state

They are both American League teams. They would NOT play each other in the world series. Usually the World Series is the final game of the Champions of the American League and the National League. They might be able to play together in the series just before the World Series called the American League Championship Series if they are the two final American League Teams. Personally if it got to that series and it ended up being Tampa Bay vs Sacramento, they might rent another stadium for the series games if the crowds are expected to get very high. For example, the Sacramento As could temporarily use Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or another field to accommodate a bigger crowd. The Rays could host those games in Miami, Atlanta, or even Dallas or Houston if needed for a bigger crowd. Moving a game once or for a small series is not unheard of, as well as playing with a smaller crowd for a big game. If you look, the 2020 World Series was played in Dallas, Texas, at Globe Life Field due to public health restrictions during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and it was the Tampa Bay Rays vs Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2020 World Series= didn't have a crowd that much larger than what Steinbrenner Field could hold, as the capacity was reduced to 11,500 due to social distancing.

I just came from your video about players not wanting to play in Sacramento. Well I really would have preferred to play in literally any other park than Stienbrenner feild after the Ray's battled this constant reputation for being the AL East farm team.
This smells a lot like the A’s and Oakland situation. After seeing it first had this looks a lot where this is going. I hope I’m wrong because no fan base deserves this
I've lived in Pinellas county, born and raised here. I've been a Rays fan since they started and have always loved Tropicana Field. We've always been dumped on but we've done what we could with what we had
Born and raised in Seminole County, just north of Olando. I've heard on our local sports channels discussions of Orlando being open to take the Rays over the past couple years. At one point, Pat Williams wanted to buy the team. Just curious to ask a lifetime local fan if that would be a preferred location, assuming they have to move somewhere else.
@TheSonofabiscuit it would be a pain for me to attend in person, I'm only a local half hour drive from the Trop now, Orlando is at minimum a 2 hour drive one way
@SegwayBossk definitely at a minimum, and i4 is already a nightmare.. most people i know including myself grew up Braves fans with Ted Turner having them on TV more often than even the Yankees, so personally I really hope they don't have to relocate out of that area. Just hard to stay positive about it..
While I agree with most of your take, I just have to comment. Tampa Bay is not a city Tampa Bay, is an area that includes Tampa Clearwater, saint, Pete, Largo. Seminole Treasure Island St. Pete beach, Clearwater, beach. Reddington beach, north reddington beach and madeira beach. Just like San Francisco 49ers (in Santa Clara) are still in the San Frisco bay area which includes San Francisco,San Jose San Mateo,Burlingame, San Carlos, Redwood City, Santa Clara Sunnyvale, Menlo, Park, Oakland, Berkeley, Marin, Richmond, and El.Cerrito. So yes, the Tampa Bay Rays are at Tampa Bay on the Saint Petersburg Side of Tampa Bay. Other than that you're pretty spot on
I remember when baseball was expanding in the 90s and all the smart people were like "baseball and Florida are a perfect match." Yeah, right. Like football in Nevada where the Raiders always are butchered by the "away crowd." The Rays players deserve better (as do the As). Thing is, players want to play in Florida bc it is good weather for their fams in winter (so no 2 homesteads), and $0 state income tax. So leaving Florida for the north seems counter productive (Canadian taxes will always make it harder to compete for FA, as Canadian hockey teams). To be fair, Tampa rarely gets hit with direct hurricanes, and there are higher priorities to address (like people's homes and schools) in the area post Milton. But jeez is this a bad look. But that's what you get with no revenue sharing. Think the Red Sox, Dodgers or Yankees care what happens in Oakland and TB? No skin off their billions. Just make it a shorter charter flight on road trips. Great catch on rainouts. That's going to make inter league games a nightmare next season
You the A's issue... the Rays issue... and eventually the WHITE SOX could be skipping town (Chicago)... MLB is in for a boondoggle for remainder of this decade
Here's the kill-all on this video ... the guy keeps talking how the Trop and the issues are not Tampa Bay. Dude, St. Pete is EVERY BIT of Tampa Bay as much as Tampa is. Good God. Learn the history of the area.
Aside my issues the Ray being place in Tempa Bay itself, it's Tropicana Field. They should have build a open air stadium They should move to the Raleigh-Durham area, like they should have been place from the get go
And ybor City put the vote up for the ppl to vote, not the city commissioners. The thing is that pasco, polk, Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Sarasota need to pull money to gethet to build like a monorail system that connects the counties better, especially for events and what not.
That might be the best option long term. I live close to Miami, and don’t know what Marlins Park doesn’t get more consideration. That could potentially be great for both the Marlins and Rays
Tampa needs to build a stadium in Tampa or at least close by. The commute is too far for those who live in Tampa. The crazy thing is that George Steinbrenner field is in a great location for local to come support. At this point, they might as well move to Orlando if they don't figure it out.
I literally drive from downtown st. Pete to go to buccaneer and lighting games and happier sit in the “far commute” Tampa Folk need to stfu tbh it’s literally not bad at all
@gibing108 congratulations to you but are you the exception or the rule? Also, keep in mind that location matters to any business and St Pete is not a good location for a major sports team
@@IAm_DrLoveJones there 941,000 exceptions unfortunately that want a team that has a owner and leadership who actually gives a fuck about them, Tampa Bay is a community that I’ve been born in and have lived in for my entire life, I’m not from Tampa, I’m from Tampa Bay, Seminole loves the rays just as much as my 80 year old uncle in plant city, St. Pete having the Rays is just how it is and how it should Be, with an owner like Jeff Vinik who actually cares about the community of Tampa Bay none of this bullshit would be happening
Tampa needs a mass comutor rail that spans Sarasota to Wesley chapel to st. Pete to new port richy and of course stops in tampa. We need to get cars off the road here. It's a night mare already and will only get worse if we dont start now. Stop expanding roads and get reliable, affordable and of course safe transit
On the new opposition to the plans by the county commissioners, one of things fueling that fire was the Rays' decision to play the 2025 games in a park in another county instead of going to park in Clearwater. Therefore Pinellas County was going to lose tax revenue in 2025 from concessions, parking and other means to ANOTHER COUNTY.
The Florida Suncoast Dome (now Tropicana Field) opened in the late 80s to try and lure a sports team to Pinellas County. The only retractable roof stadium at that point (Olympic Stadium) ran WAY over budget and the roof didn't retract when it opened (I think they were only able to do it for about 15 years). Rogers Center, which opened in '89, was the 2nd retractable roof.
For those saying they should move to Montreal or Oakland, do you realize that MLB would have to move around other teams and even move an NL team into the AL. Then there's logistics with travel and availability. Won't the Rays be on the west? In order to keep that 15 AL\15 NL, one NL team on the east has to switch to the AL. Divisions will have to be realigned. Why do you think the A's are moving to Vegas and not to Charlotte? So yeah, yall better think about things like this before giving a knee jerk reaction on where the Rays should move to. BTW, I'm an O's fan.
Moving the Rays to Montreal doesn’t require any divisional or league realignment. Look at a map. Montreal is better suited to the AL East than Tampa is.
Rob Manfred saying he wants the Rays to stay in the Tampa/St. Pete area is not exactly a vote of confidence. Wasn't the same thing said by MLB about Oakland with the A's?
They should of kept the area in Ybor City open for a stadium. The Marlins stadium issues and financing is the real reason why Florida, it's counties and municipalities want no part of the funding. IMO, moving the Rays to either Charlotte ( and ending the blackout between Atlanta and DC) or Nashville seem feasible. Moving the team to Montreal 30 years after the last strike and the attendance issues they had might make them be cautious
0:33: Very easy for you to say this. Hindsight is always 20/20. The last major hurricane to hit Tampa was in 1921, MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO. But you are correct in questioning the rationale for building the new park in the same location which doesn't solve the travel access issues which deter many people from going to the games.
6:58 why not? The Jays played playoff games in their minor league park in 2020. The question would be, what would happen if they play the Yankees in the playoffs?
Fun fact Disney wide world of sports MLB staidum where braves play spring ball Was opened to rays coming Why did they go out of fL Old marlins stadium is still active as well Kinda strange
It's not their responsibility. Contractually it's the county's. Who's refusing because they have bigger priorities which is Hurricane Helene & Milton recovery.
Have you ever lived in an apartment complex where a fire that started in another apartment than yours spread to yours. Even if you have apartment fire insurance watch your insurance company dodge paying to replace all of your furniture and clothes. You will be lucky to be able to replace half your stuff with your insurance. And watch that insurance company increase your premiums significantly not because you were careless, but because you actually after paying thousands in premiums called them...
Hurricane didn’t kill it… pinellas / st Pete knew for 20 years they needed a new stadium. These are the same people who take weeks to approve permits so people can fix their damaged homes.
No, I’m sorry but the location of St. Petersburg and the Tropicana stadium (itself), being shit for the team are two very poor opinions and excuses from ppl who just repeat what they hear. St. Petersburg is centrally located in the Metropolis and the stadium itself was built in 1990 and looks and feels absolutely clean. The land around it was never developed or used wisely. The roof was nice for games when it cooled off and great when storms and rain came. It’s unfortunate that it was damaged but it was caused by a hurricane, not 20mph winds. The longevity of the roof should be looked at, anyone from Florida knows how the heat and salt air takes its toll on everything. Putting the stadium in Tampa will not attract ppl from Orlando. No one there is going to do that drive. You might attract ppl from Lakeland, but they will do so at the risk of losing fans who will now have to drive even further. And if you want to build a fan base, you don’t earn it by constantly complaining and threatening to leave. You have to earn a fan base and since the rays don’t win enough or show happiness or support for their area…it’s kind of hard for fans to. I guess they feel that slinging mud is a better option. You lost a fan base when your owner started with that nonsense of putting you in Montreal. Why should TampaBay fans be committed to you…St Pete fans especially?
“Not even in Tampa Bay” it’s literally in Tampa Bay, also, I happily drive 45 minutes to an hour and a half to go to buccaneer and Lightning games from St. Pete because of traffic without traffic, it takes about half an hour to get from downtown st. Pete to downtown Tampa, Tampa Bay is a combination of multiple cities and towns, The Tampa Bay Rays Play in Tampa Bay, they have always been in Tampa Bay and I hope they continue to be.
What is the radio station that I can tell Alexa to turn into to hear local Tampa Bay sports talk ? I usually need the call letters and number like: 106.7 The Fan (Baltimore) WGR 550 (Buffalo NY) 92.9 The Game (Atlanta) 610 WIP (Philadelphia) Arizona Sports (Phoenix) KRLD (Dallas)
The host states that repairs to the roof of Tropicana would cost $23 million. Then he added that the figure would go up to $56 million by 2026 and that much of the cost would be covered by insurance or FEMA reimbursements. So why is the taxpayer asked to fork over more money by passing a bond issue? Does anyone with a brain listen to this information? $23 million is less than the salary of one superstar for a season's play. An MLB team somehow comes up with the money to pay the players. The costs of roof repairs are a pittance in a team's budget. And if the Rays don't want to pay the cost themselves, then MLB and the other franchises could easily pitch in $2 million per franchise and fix the roof themselves. Why should the middle class fund repairs to make billionaire owners richer still? The wealthy are laughing at us.
Just go. Remember when you tried to use Wade Boggs to gain traction? People have wisely rejected your team. It smelled fishy. Tampa Bay is giving Las Vegas a run for it's money in sleeze.
If a tree falls in Tropicana Field and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound? That was always a joke I liked to crack about the Trop's abysmal history of attendance, playing off on the old philosophical paradox a bit (just with a Baseball twist). But if the Rays did move, and Tropicana doesn't have Baseball anymore, I guess I lose my running joke. That makes me a touch sad I must say. Still, would have happened eventually. Tropicana days were numbered anyway in any scenario. Ah, the Trop. It reminds of a Urinal stand. Servicable, but still damn ugly.
They are planing on making a new field that costs more than they have probably made in the last ten years look how that worked out for the marlins just move the team
I grew up in the trop I was going to games since 2003 when I was a kid. Ive always loved it and never understood the hate... It has AC and it does what its supposed to do? I genuinely don't see the problem with it or why people need to have a multi billion dollar stadium to watch a baseball game. But that's just my opinion a native Floridian who's been going to games almost since they started playing
50 mil to fix the roof is nothing to mlb. Let the team which is worth billions of dollars pay for it. Or leave and go elsewhere. Sick of leagues being so cheap and demanding so much money from the public just so they can get rich
Tampa bay is an incredible market that can still make the team lots of money but they NEED TO MAKE IT MORE ACCESSIBLE 🤦♂️ if they don't get their ish💩 together they might lose their team just like the poor A's
It's completely fair to clown on the place the Rays play but saying they should leave which is what I have heard a ton of people say not really sympthatic to the fans who would just lose a recently good baseball team all because of a once in a lifetime storm and a corrupt ownership and political commission party to cry at each other about money and mistreatment. It just feels like two people having a pissing match while the fans (not to mention all the jobs that will be lost) are in the middle of it

Just like San Francisco 49ers (in Santa Clara) are still in the San Frisco bay area which includes San Francisco,San Jose San Mateo,Burlingame, San Carlos, Redwood City, Santa Clara Sunnyvale, Menlo, Park, Oakland,
Berkeley, Marin, Richmond, and El.Cerrito. So yes, the Tampa Bay Rays are at Tampa Bay on the Saint Petersburg Side of Tampa Bay. Other than that you're pretty spot on
yea he said that in the video.
What I heard him at say at 1:20 that the ray's stadium wasn't even in Tampa Bay.
And people thought the Wander Franco situation was the end of bad luck

Rays Up, We will never Die!
I hate everytime you say "it's not in Tampa Bay." The region that St Pete is in IS Tampa Bay, the city is called Tampa.
Aside my issues the Ray being place in Tempa Bay itself, it's Tropicana Field.
They should have build a open air stadium
They should move to the Raleigh-Durham area, like they should have been place from the get go
The chappelle meme was a good one. Quick and funny
1:14 I heard that the city of Saint Petersburg played political hard ball to prevent the Rays from going to Tampa. Is this true?
Depends on how you define hardball. They just wouldn't let them out of their contract.
And ybor City put the vote up for the ppl to vote, not the city commissioners. The thing is that pasco, polk, Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Sarasota need to pull money to gethet to build like a monorail system that connects the counties better, especially for events and what not.
I see the Rays moving...to Orlando. Keeps them in Florida.
That might be the best option long term. I live close to Miami, and don’t know what Marlins Park doesn’t get more consideration. That could potentially be great for both the Marlins and Rays
There is no city of Tampa Bay
Sounds like the owner just dgaf and wants out.
A's-Ray's playoff series next October, you know its going to happen.
I have a video idea where who share how your Chanel started! Love your vids
Looking forward to Aaron Judge smashing homeruns in the Ray's new ballpark
Judge is Mr June
0:00 bro I already like the video 🔥😫
On the new opposition to the plans by the county commissioners, one of things fueling that fire was the Rays' decision to play the 2025 games in a park in another county instead of going to park in Clearwater. Therefore Pinellas County was going to lose tax revenue in 2025 from concessions, parking and other means to ANOTHER COUNTY.
The catwalks overhead were always dumb. Why play in Florida and not at least have a retractable metal roof?
The Florida Suncoast Dome (now Tropicana Field) opened in the late 80s to try and lure a sports team to Pinellas County.
The only retractable roof stadium at that point (Olympic Stadium) ran WAY over budget and the roof didn't retract when it opened (I think they were only able to do it for about 15 years). Rogers Center, which opened in '89, was the 2nd retractable roof.
That wasn’t a thing back then. It’s like asking for streaming music back in the 90s.
iTalk will not heart my comment
Take that!
Great video
AMAZING CHAPELLE DROP!!!
Stu wants Montreal
Say what you want about the Trop but the Ray tank was a gift to baseball.
It’ll be interesting to see if they average more fans at a minor league field in Florida weather then in the Dome last year
I'm a 1%er that actually like the Rays stadium (Os fan that traveled there), I just didnt understand why the roof was made from paper maché
If the Rays are good, I could see them playing their playoff games in either Miami or Atlanta.
Neither of those is ideal, but what else can they do?
Hi Italk
Hey!
It would cost the team more in relocation fees to move than it would for them to build a new stadium.
Okay so the Ray's are moving to Steinbrenner Field and it was my idea. What do I get?
How the hell was Tropicana field a hockey stadium?!
Bring them to OKC like the hornets, that way OKC can get another team due to a hurricane destroying a arena
6:58 why not? The Jays played playoff games in their minor league park in 2020. The question would be, what would happen if they play the Yankees in the playoffs?
Fun fact
Disney wide world of sports MLB staidum where braves play spring ball
Was opened to rays coming
Why did they go out of fL
Old marlins stadium is still active as well
Kinda strange
So if the MLB is going to save the Rays from relocation why not do the same for the A's??
They could leave the stadium and field messy like that, and just play on it. It'll be quirky
If Italk dosent heart my comment then he is a blue jay fan
There is zero excuse that the Ray's do not pay for their own roof.
I guess the Ray's didnt have Hurricane insurance 😂😂😂
Hurricane didn’t kill it… pinellas / st Pete knew for 20 years they needed a new stadium. These are the same people who take weeks to approve permits so people can fix their damaged homes.
They should rename the team the "Taxpayer Handouts."
How did Tampa Bay get an MLB team instead of Orlando is beyond me...
Tampa bay is more populated
More people, more money. Port of Tampa is huge.
What he means by " not even in Tampa Bay" is in the bay itself, as in the water part
XD XD XD
yeah and saint petersburg and pinallas county are 2 blame
Thank you, Teddy Ballgame, Jackie, and Babe! Thank all the badeball gods!!
They should just rename themselves to the Barnstormers at this point
It was a perfect storm of bad luck.
Why don’t they just use it as a open air ball park?😅
What is the radio station that I can tell Alexa to turn into
to hear local Tampa Bay sports talk ?
I usually need the call letters and number like:
106.7 The Fan (Baltimore)
WGR 550 (Buffalo NY)
92.9 The Game (Atlanta)
610 WIP (Philadelphia)
Arizona Sports (Phoenix)
KRLD (Dallas)
As a Rays fan, the problem is and always has been Stu. He needs to sell the team.
I like tropicana it's nice inside
iTalk 100% voted for Kamala
They are planing on making a new field that costs more than they have probably made in the last ten years look how that worked out for the marlins just move the team
to Carolina and rename Tornados.....too soon?
Why don’t they just completely remove the roof and just let it be an outdoor park going forward lol
The stadium has no drainage.
I'm with you,I'm a life long Floridian and I love the Trop, only go to a couple games a year, but I've never had a bad time at a Rays game
Heres my question do Rays fans want them to stay in Tampa? Cause its hard to tell
St. Pete not Tampa, and according to attendance St Pete never was the be draw for crowds because not all the fans live in that city.
Should be in Tampa not St. Petersburg. They’re the Tampa bay rays not the St. Petersburg rays.
50 mil to fix the roof is nothing to mlb. Let the team which is worth billions of dollars pay for it. Or leave and go elsewhere. Sick of leagues being so cheap and demanding so much money from the public just so they can get rich
Hurricanes be like that tho
Tampa bay is an incredible market that can still make the team lots of money but they NEED TO MAKE IT MORE ACCESSIBLE 🤦♂️ if they don't get their ish💩 together they might lose their team just like the poor A's
What if they made the playoffs and have to play home 💀
Very interesting that a professional team permanently relocated because of natural disasters
This story gonna be down for ages
Maybe too soon
It's completely fair to clown on the place the Rays play but saying they should leave which is what I have heard a ton of people say not really sympthatic to the fans who would just lose a recently good baseball team all because of a once in a lifetime storm and a corrupt ownership and political commission party to cry at each other about money and mistreatment. It just feels like two people having a pissing match while the fans (not to mention all the jobs that will be lost) are in the middle of it
IT’S TIME FOR THE TAMPA BAY RAYS TO MOVE OUT OF STATE ! THE MONEY IS BETTER FOR HURRICANE RECOVERY !
Tampa is Tampa…… Tampa, st. Pete, Sarasota, Clearwater etc is Tampa Bay!!!! You must not be from here
