Eh, hasn't baseball always had the issue of big market teams gobbling up the vast majority of the talent? This could just be its logical conclusion with the biggest markets.
That's where I'm at. This die hard baseball fan has decided to take a break from the league until they reorganize the financial viability of MLB. They should have them play ALL home games thru mid-june. Then play all the July-Aug home games in neutral sites like Mexico City, Havana, montreal, Vancouver, Puerto Rico, someplace that grows the interest internationally.
This and the A’s situation shows how much baseball in general is in trouble from a public relations and support basis. Two teams can not seem to get the new stadiums they want and need in their old markets. Given that many local governments are now starting to object tp paying a large portion to build new stadiums both teams may even have a hard time if they choose to relocate to another city.

However it has not seemed to held the Phillies from doing well the last few years. If you have the right players and few injuries any team could play in any stadium and play well.
I think if the situation extends beyond this year they have to explore splitting their home games with another location like Montreal and also have any teams they only play once play earlier in the year and they could do makeups in Montreal, it wouldn’t be as bad to have a team like Seattle do a make up in Montreal before or after a series with Toronto, Boston or New York. Olympic stadium should be ready next year and is covered so you would have schedule certainty.
If I'm a lower-tier free agent, I might look at signing with Tampa on a 1-year deal and try to get traded before the deadline to minimize on travel. The only downside is playing in a minor-league park for a few months.
The 3 times I’ve went on vacation to DisneyWorld, all have been in August. & every day thunderstorms / rain would happen on/off from Noon till the evening. Also the Rays are going to be a bad team next year. That unbalanced travel will take a toll on that team.
Brodie, I think it would make for a great episode to study the history of how the Blue Jays handled their stints of playing regular season games in Dunedin and Buffalo during the pandemic. I think there are a lot of history lessons that could apply here, even though that situation was the result of starkly different circumstances. Not to mention Hurricane season always impacts the Florida State League schedule in August-September. They have had postseason cancelled because of Hurricanes
MLB making Weather related Schedules is Not New. Many Northeast and Midwest MLB Teams Play much more Road Games in the West or Domed Stadiums Early in the Season to avoid bad weather that would cause postponements.
I lived in Tampa for 10 years and went to many minor league games in July and August..its not the rain..you could sit right behind the dugout during the day it was brutal..cannot do it...all games must must be night games!
Will be interesting to see what they do for start times too. Looks like all home game times are listed as TBD right now. Typically most of the summer rain falls as intense afternoon convective storms. Will having 8pm scheduled starts become normal? Or maybe even some late morning starts?
A large number of Major League players have played in the Florida State League so at least they'll know what to expect. I worked as a Clubhouse Manager for the Blue Jays in Dunedin, FL and the rain is certainly an issue as is the humidity but as you said, it's the double headers that will become an issue. I think MLB is smart in adjusting the schedule to minimize this. From a player standpoint, I think they'd prefer to have longer road trips in MLB stadiums as a trade for less waiting around in a minor league clubhouse for a game to get banged due to rain. I actually would like to see the Rays play in Orlando at the Disney complex. I've been to all of these Florida stadiums many times and the Disney stadium would provide the best stadium and atmosphere, they wouldn't have to share the field with another team, and it provides a better overall destination for visiting fans. Also, from the standpoint of driving to games from anywhere outside of St. Pete or maybe the Bradenton area, Tropicana Field is in a horrible location and I believe one of the reasons the average attendance is so low. I've always thought that the new stadium should be built in Orlando or somewhere between the east side of Tampa and Orlando near I-4. On another note, I now live in Sacramento and I think MLB should look at starting games at 8pm in the peak summer months. The summer evenings are amazing but playing at Sutter Health Park when the sun is high in the sky is not fun for players or fans.
Do you think Montreal be the best option? Sort of like when the New Orleans Hornets had to play in OKC for a bit. Or when the Raptors had to play in Tampa for a season.
The Miami Marlins played outside for what... 20 years? Before they build a dome there. Atlanta plays outside and the rain and heat in ATL is not much different than what Tampa is going to have to deal with. It's an odd situation but I think it's overblown a bit
I don't think ATL gets as much rain as TB does, and the thunderstorms that hit the 404 seem to pass and be over with usually before the 7:20 pm game start time. But as for the heat, yeah, that is somewhat similar.
The Trop was not only a crappy stadium it was in a crappy location. So what did the team do? They negotiated a deal to build a new stadium in the same crappy location. During my time down here I have heard talk about building a park in Tampa but for whatever reason that's never gone anywhere. I like Steinbrenner Field for spring training games. It's a nice park and when I went there the staff was top-notch. But it's too tiny to act as a regular season site for any length of time and as the man pointed out our rainy season is a problem. Seems to me the simplest solution would be to move to Tennessee or North Carolina. That would cause the least disruption. Any move west would cause division realignment. The Rays and the Pinellas County commissioners have been doing this weird sort of tango, kind of like you would expect from a married couple headed toward divorce. The one thing that runs through all of it is genuine hostility on both sides. Some commissioner will call the Rays names and then come back the next day and say she still really wants them to stay. Then someone from the Rays will say they don't see a path forward because of the increased cost for the new stadium and then come back and say they are certain something can be worked out. Just leave. Baseball seems to be holding a tougher line with the Rays than they did with the A's but hey, they get to put a team in Vegas making it easier for them to cut up the profits with their new business partners. I'm a Tiger fan so I don't really have a dog in the hunt but I just don't see any way they stick around. I could be wrong though. Time will tell.
Tennessee ain't happening. They're in the process of building an over-budget stadium for the Titans right now. Estimated to come in at $2.2 billion. They ain't building another one.
The vibe I'm getting: Hurricane Milton is to the Rays as the '94 strike was to the Expos, in terms of franchise trajectory. I doubt the Rays seriously contend in Tampa ever again, and I expect them to move within a decade.
If they are looking for sympathy, well there's a famous quote from the movie Major Payne that comes to mind. I've had to do contract work that kept me from home for 4-6 months at a time. They can play on the road and it won't kill them.. I would have loved to play that kind of schedule.. sadly, I was never considered that good to play at that level..
The city of San Antonio is currently trying to build a new ballpark for the San Antonio missions. I say the Tampa Bay rays should give the city a call and say hey we'd like to collaborate on a relocation and new MLB ballpark with you guys.
They need to work with the Bucs to figure out how to temporarily reconfigure RayJay during the baseball season to accommodate the Rays until a dual-use Rays/Bucs dome can be built in Tampa.
Mr Brodie 1. I say with the stadium funding deal dead in the water; the Rays play at Steinbrenner Field for 3 years and relocate to Orlando? 2. Shifting the series around hopefully doesn't result in too much of a domino effect for other teams. 3. Even with the front loaded home schedule; it's not a guarantee that weather will affect the games. I do see a rainout or two in Tampa.
Orlando ain't happening. The city council declined to even take a vote on the possibility of looking into building a baseball stadium. They have no interest.
Montreal needs to get their act together... it could take a year before Olympic Stadium roof is fixed and use temporary until a brand new stadium is built.
What is the big deal, the Marlins played outdoors for years in Florida. Many times when it rains, it’s in the afternoon and lasts maybe an hour. That is not to say it will not rain during games, but this is the least of their problems.😊
I live in Tampa and tend to agree with you. The rain will be an issue, but the heat and humidity will be worse. The games they do play here in the summer better all be night games.
Used to be called Legends Field, me and my late father used to go often from Jersey to Florida go see Yankees Good Memories It’s a nice little stadium 🏟️ Back when Jeter was still unknown
It's not just rain, It's lightning Brodie. Even if it's not raining, thunderstorms are an everyday thing from June to August. Why do you think the hockey team is called the Lightning. Literally, that's what it does EVERY SINGLE DAY. It is called Hurricane season for a reason. ⛈️⚡️🌩 without fail tourist get struck by lightning ever year. They can't risk players getting electrocuted.
What kind of schedule did the Marlins have when they were playing in Joe Robbie Stadium? You have similar rain figures, just usually during the afternoon. No idea if Tampa is the same.
If they’re paying the Yankees $15 million to play at their spring training facility this year, why not just use that money to fix the roof on the Trop and play somewhere else more affordable? Or crap, the Yankees facility doesn’t have a roof. Why not just play in the Trop still while IT doesn’t have its roof? Or, if you’re going to pay $15 million to play in a spring training facility, WHY would you not use some park of that size in a northern state where you wouldn’t have to worry about the heat, humidity, and rain of the Florida summer? This all just sounds like they’re really not thinking this through logically.
Assuming that the Rays long term plan is to stay in the Tampa Bay area, they need to schedule both the Rays and Marlins at the Marlins' stadium in Miami for 2026 and beyond, until a new hurricane proof facility is built in the Tampa area. Either that or move the team to Nashville or some other permanent home in 2026. 2025 will be difficult at best any way they do it.
@@acebragg5559Baseball is going to hold off as much as it can on division realignment until it expands to 32 teams and HAS to realign to keep the divisions even.
Let's see........they play what? 81 home games? It's a 6 month season. So that would normally be about 40 home games in the first three months and about 40 in the second half. So now they're going to play only 30 homes games in the second half. About 3 less home games in every month of the second half and 3 more in every month of the first half. Wow!!!! OMG!!!! That's crazy!!!!!!! I can't believe that!!!!!!!! It's insane!!!!!!!!!!! Not. Ssssnnnnzzzz.............
Rays to Tampa. Rays fans have been saying it for years. Any other Tampa resident that has said the opposite are Yankees fans and nobody in the Tampa area that was born here likes them not even their kids they just tolerate em. Not gonna let em take the rays from the die hard fans here. MLB knows it would make zero sense to relocate the newest team when they were never given a fair chance.
They tried already and Sternberg walked away because they didn't give him enough. Maybe he has a change of heart and Hillsborough sweetens the deal a bit to get it done, but Hillsborough will NOT give the Rays the deal they had with St. Pete/Pinellas.
@ don’t you think it would be worth Tampas investment? Everyone who likes the rays from Orlando to Sarasota have said they’d make the trip to Tampa more frequently for games. Is it a delusional question to ask if MLB will help with finances if they’re serious about the market of Tampa in general?
I do not understand how the Rays cant clean up the Trop and put a roof on that thing and play ball by April, let alone the summer. I understand that I am no expert but it seems unbelievable that this is not enough time to even slap a temporary roof on the Trop. 6 months? Or just play in it without the roof but keep the amenities? Crazy. Hope this move works out for them.
Uh, you can't just throw a tarp over it and call it good. Besides, the roof wasn't the only damage. The rest of the stadium had wind and water damage as well and since it's an indoor stadium there isn't drainage in there like an outdoor stadium, thus you now have mold/mildew. Also, all the scoreboards were not rated for outdoor use so all of those are damaged as well. It's not just the roof.
I think the biggest theoretical impediment is if the Rays want to spend $60 million to play in a stadium for 3 or 4 years (as they have to pay over 50% and cost overruns for the new stadium). Add in the question of if the Rays were able to pay for these repairs on such short notice, why can't they finance their stadium on their own dime?
The answer to all the Rays problems continues to stare them right in their face: MOVE TO MONTRÉAL. I know it's not an easy thing to do, but when your home city no longer cares about you, why should you!? Pack it up and move to Montréal, where fans are ready to welcome you with open arms!
Hear me out. Reconvert old Turner Field in Atlanta back into a baseball field and have the Rays be Atlanta's second team for a few years until they figure out where they are going to move to.
There's a lot of women that do not want to be outside in the summertime to watch baseball. They love their makeup and such. Hell, the September Bucs games can be 100 degrees on the field. We would pray for rain.
@@stevengrvp I know.. I am just saying everyone rebuilds in the same place and then is shocked and sad when a hurricane eventually wrecks everything again sometimes twice in one year. And who pays to clean it all... The rest of the country. Everyone should get a one time federal assistance to relocate somewhere else or pay for future damage themselves. People will disagree that's fine it's just my opinion
I will not be surprised if the Rays eventually relocate out of Florida especially if they can't reach a deal to get funding for repairs of the Trop and/or a new stadium.
Uh.....because the Rays players and personnel live in St. Pete. On top of that, the Rays will draw more fans in a minor league park than the Marlins will in their home stadium. There would be even fewer people in Miami showing up for a Rays game.
Why does Major League Baseball step in and fix the roof? They stand to benefit more than the City of TB. Tax payer money should be used for education and to improve the city
These are all very real issues, but in the end does it really matter? No matter what path it takes, MLB has already awarded the Dodgers the 2025 World Series Championship, so it's really a moot point. Why even bother watching the Rays or any of the other 28 teams when the conclusion has already been determined?
It's in Port Charlotte, which is an hour and a half to two hours from St. Pete where most of the players and personnel actually live, so there's that. The Port Charlotte stadium is likely not up to MLB standards and it's also nearly 50% smaller capacity than Steinbrenner. Then you have the fact that you have far less population to actually attend than you do in Tampa.
Why is the players association putting up with this .Bad enough two teams now won’t be playing in a MLB park but now teams will have to change everything to accommodate the weather .Just get rid of the A’s and Rays till 2028 when both will have a new stadium and both can come back as expansion teams
@@GDavis49 No they aren’t , they are being redistributed and it would only be temporary. When the A’s and Rays return in 28 there will be hiring of new players coaches equipment mangers etc..Players retire , get cut get sent down all the time ..

Rainfall? I was hoping they just realized how unbelievably hot those seats get.
They need to work with the Bucs to figure out how to temporarily reconfigure RayJay during the baseball season to accommodate the Rays until a dual-use Rays/Bucs dome can be built in Tampa.
Welcome Back Montreal Expos🎉
Mr Brodie
The rain in Florida seems like a lot, but it's a little bit every day at the same time - afternoon.
Used to be called Legends Field, me and my late father used to go often from Jersey to Florida go see Yankees
Good Memories
It’s a nice little stadium 🏟️
Back when Jeter was still unknown
Highly unlikely but imagine playing a WS in steinbrenner field😂
Excellent job sir
They won't be in Florida for long
It's not just rain, It's lightning Brodie.
Good luck catching a Rays game this summer.
8:44 - Tough sell, but yes! I would still gladly play for the Rays for the league minimum.
They need to play doubleheaders preemptively ⛈️ with west coast teams … ⚡️
Assuming that the Rays long term plan is to stay in the Tampa Bay area, they need to schedule both the Rays and Marlins at the Marlins' stadium in Miami for 2026 and beyond, until a new hurricane proof facility is built in the Tampa area. Either that or move the team to Nashville or some other permanent home in 2026. 2025 will be difficult at best any way they do it.
No need to IF they fix the Trop. If not it almost seems like the best temporary option would be.....................Oakland.
This is why if they get a new stadium in Tampa or Saint Pete it has to have a roof
A lot of stop and go because the rain comes quick and heavy and stops
Is it possible to revisit the proposal that put half of the home games in Montreal? At this point it seems like "there are no bad ideas..."
Right now, it's unlikely as Olympic Stadium is being renovated.
Could spliting time at the Marlins home field been an option? at least a handful of series?
Real life Major League possibility
It hardly rains in Salt Lake City. I just want to point that out.
And this is why the Rays want a new dome.
Whose going to pay to convert Georgia State's Stadium?
Lunacy
They should suspend the franchises until both the Rays and A’s have major league caliber homes. Put the pressure on the owners to take action!
Give us the podcast back !!!!
It’s not like the Rays are going to contend in 2025 anyway with their situation
There's a lot of women that do not want to be outside in the summertime to watch baseball. They love their makeup and such. Hell, the September Bucs games can be 100 degrees on the field. We would pray for rain.
Is it easier for fans to make it to Steinbrenner field as opposed to Tropicana?
MLB is an absolute mess and it's great that they have such a fantastic commish to navigate the course. Oh, wait...
They made it work with the Marlins for two decades. Or is Tampa that much more rain than Miami?
I don't see them playing in Florida next year
Can’t wait for the first night game with my rays
They’ll be playing half their season in Puerto Rico before their eventual move to Montreal
I hope you aren’t putting any money on this prediction
Such a big deal was made about the heat in Sacramento or Vegas. This will be worse.
Move the Rays to Oakland & call them the Oakland A's Rays! Kinda like Willie Mays Hayes? You know? Just trying to think out of the box here!
How did Miami Marlins play outdoors all those years before new stadium?
As an O's fan this is GREAT news!
sooo, us having a castrophic hurricane ruin our stadium pleases you? stay classy
@@MrSmithgobucs Don't build where hurricanes come. Stay smart. Cleaning up the messes every year is a huge drain on the tax payers.
@@Mattjohnson5192they have been in Florida all this time. This just happened
@Mattjohnson5192 you are happy about a natural disaster where people's lifes were effected. No one on these teams knew what was going to happen
Is it feasible with the attendance woes
I will not be surprised if the Rays eventually relocate out of Florida especially if they can't reach a deal to get funding for repairs of the Trop and/or a new stadium.
As they should
The Tampa Bay Globetrotters. Cue 🎶Sweet Georgia Brown🎶
Nice 😂
The Rays will need to adapt a new official team song - "On The Road Again".
Why don't they share the stadium with the Marlins during this time, they can make adjustments to the schedule to work them in.
Distance from Tampa. Don’t want to eat into the Marlins fanbase (even on accident)
Oh. And it makes too much sense.
Uh.....because the Rays players and personnel live in St. Pete. On top of that, the Rays will draw more fans in a minor league park than the Marlins will in their home stadium. There would be even fewer people in Miami showing up for a Rays game.
I recommend San Antonio Alamo Dome.
Poor DJ Kitty needs a Forever Home.
How does this compare to other teams?
If only the Rays had a wealthy owner who could fund the repairs to Tropicana Field out of their own pocket. What a shame.
The owner doesn't own the Trop. The city of St. Petersburg does.
Why does Major League Baseball step in and fix the roof? They stand to benefit more than the City of TB. Tax payer money should be used for education and to improve the city
Average American not feeling sorry for this kind of inconvenience
These are all very real issues, but in the end does it really matter? No matter what path it takes, MLB has already awarded the Dodgers the 2025 World Series Championship, so it's really a moot point. Why even bother watching the Rays or any of the other 28 teams when the conclusion has already been determined?
Weren't the Dodgers 6 outs away from being eliminated by the Padres?
$185,185.185 per game
The free giveaway each game will be rain ponchos
Maybe the rays will sell out some games this season.
Some? Guarantee every game through May is sold out in no time.
With the handwringing, this issue will, of course, end up as a proverbial nothing burger. 😅
Why not use there own Spring Training field?
It's in Port Charlotte, which is an hour and a half to two hours from St. Pete where most of the players and personnel actually live, so there's that. The Port Charlotte stadium is likely not up to MLB standards and it's also nearly 50% smaller capacity than Steinbrenner. Then you have the fact that you have far less population to actually attend than you do in Tampa.
@acebragg5559 oh okay I didn't know that
Do I still want to play for the rays? What the fuck kind of question is that. Of course I would. You’re not working in a steel mill or coal mine.
Why is the players association putting up with this .Bad enough two teams now won’t be playing in a MLB park but now teams will have to change everything to accommodate the weather .Just get rid of the A’s and Rays till 2028 when both will have a new stadium and both can come back as expansion teams
You think the PA would be happy to cut that many jobs?
@ They wouldn’t cut anyone , the players would be distributed to other teams while others are sent down just like they do now
@@BoulderCityBluesyou’re still losing MLB jobs
@@GDavis49 No they aren’t , they are being redistributed and it would only be temporary. When the A’s and Rays return in 28 there will be hiring of new players coaches equipment mangers etc..Players retire , get cut get sent down all the time ..
@ there’s not enough major league roster spots for everyone. They wouldn’t be increasing roster sizes for the existing teams
Should just play in Oakland
Prbably still can't sell it out.
You know nothing about the Tampa Bay area then. They will sell out every game through May in no time. Tampa ISN'T St. Pete.
@acebragg5559 yet you're still all too lazy to drive over to St Pete? Wow. Real strong fan base
