    I buy the Insul-Brite by the bolt. You really only need one layer of insul-Brite & 2 layers of cotton batting. The Insul-
    brite is expensive & I never use it unless I need to. Always for potholders & oven mitts. I also make what used to be called potato grabbers that are similar to what you are making now. Veru Cute. I downloaded the pattern & am going to make some. :)

    You can just use painters tape for the grid lines and just keep moving it over an inch if you don’t have a special pen. That’s what I always do. You can use the same piece over and over again.

    The first way is the easiest technique @Trish Kay! The other technique is traditionally what quilters use but isn't really necessary for this project because the piece of binding is so short!

    I love the Heart-Potholder and the way you explain how to make it is very clear and easy to understand. But, I like the extra protection of the insulbrite on the flaps also. Many times we use the broiler to brown the top of our dishes. When removing these, our hands can get very close to the heat of the element (even if it has been turned off) causing bad burns or catching fire.

    This is a very thorough tutorial that is easy to follow and replicate. I had some fabric that I had purchased for another project and realized that, because it was directional, it was not going to work. I saw this tutorial and thought it would be great for this fabric. After cutting my own 10"x10" squares to begin the project I realized that there are a couple of details that are not really apparent from the tutorial that are important to know if you are using directional fabric.
    1. With directional fabric each 10"x10" square has top, bottom, and left and right sides. When cutting down the 10"x10" inch squares to the 8.5"x10" and 7.5"x10" rectangles you want to trim off the top or bottom of the squares, depending on what part of the pattern you want to keep for the back, inside, or flaps of the mitts. Don't trim the sides.
    2. I recommend adding a grain line to the flap pattern pieces so that you can align them with the fabric pattern. Use the top and bottom points on the full heart pattern piece to draw a straight, vertical line. You can transfer this to the left and right using your grid ruler (Omnigrid, etc.) If you align the straight edge of the flap pattern pieces with the grain of the fabric, the pattern will be rotated (I wish I could include some pictures with this comment to illustrate). With directional fabric, if you want the flap pattern to be square to the pattern, the straight edge of the flap pattern pieces will be at an angle to the grain of the fabric, NOT as is shown in the tutorial.
    Also, when I completed my first set of two, I realized that the pattern is somewhat small for my hands. I think I have large hands (7 1/2 " from the tip of my middle finger to the bottom of the heel of my palm) so the pattern is probably good for those with average or small hands. I will be making more but will be enlarging the pattern, which may mean that 10" x 10" squares are not quite large enough for both the heart patterns and trim pieces. I may have to use extra fabric for the trim pieces. I may also try using binding instead of having to sew and then turn right side out.

    Love the frixon pens also but......keep in mind if your sewn project will be exposed to freezing weather. I live in Minnesota where it can get to minus 20 Fahrenheit and was making a car seat poncho for great granddaughter. I was using the frixon pen to mark it when I remembered that the marks all come back when exposed to cold. Try it in your freezer. So, most things these are great for and I still use them but not if it’s gonna be in freezing temps.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  5 лет назад

      Thanks for sharing that tip with us. We haven't had that happen. The marks should go away when ironed again, right? We'll have to give it a try in the freezer! :) - Morgan

    would like to give you a time saver. if you would cut your pieces out of freezer paper you would not have to pin it to cut it out. simply iron it to the back of your fabric and cut out. I feel that you also get a much more accurate cut this way.

    I love watching your tutorials. You have so many great ideas and projects, and I just wanted to say thank you :)Also, with the friction pen, I'm wondering if it has anything to do with climate or temperature but I have friction pens and used one on some fabric for a project and after ironing my fabric you could clearly see a white faded line where the pen mark was. It ruined my fabric! I decided to test it on other scrap pieces and the same thing happened, except it was more clearly visible on some fabric and not on other fabric. I've decided to not use the friction pen on any fabric where it would be visible. I can't afford to waste fabric. I'm wondering if you've not noticed the same thing? I see you talk about the friction pen a lot but people should check with their fabric before they use it. I won't use them at all anymore.

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  9 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much for watching +Paula Sydney! We have not had that issue on our fabrics but you are right, people should do a swatch test on their fabrics, or use the pen on the back of the fabrics when possible. We have heard from a few people that the black pen can leave marks on darker fabrics after it has been ironed away. Have you tried the red FrXion pen? Maybe that would help with the issue!

    • @paulasydney
      @paulasydney 9 лет назад

      I'm going to test a few colors and see what happens. I got a distinct white line on my light yellow fabric after ironing it and to be honest I can't remember what color I used. At our last quilt show here I did talk to some big name quilters who also own stores such as yours and they had the same thing happen and said they would never use them and tell people not to use them. I'm now wondering if it's something to do with climate and or temperature? Maybe the pens react different in Australia lol who knows? Anyways, thank you again for you're tutorials, I just love watching them and get so many great ideas and tips from you :)

    I really dont like this layer cakes, charm packs etc. My reasoning is because of what you also said. They are just adorable so they sit on the shelf and dont get used. Secondly, if I really like a few of the fabrics, that is all you have of it. Whereas I would rather have 3 yards for example. Finally I dont find it convenient because if you make a mistake in cutting- that piece is done. I agree they are so adorable though. Thanks for sharing.
