The podcast with Shia was so raw and emotional. Shia didn't make excuses, he didn't sugar coat his persona. He put it all on the table. One of the best podcasts I've see. I hope he continues to do the work necessary to better himself.

That full interview with Shia as well as Shia’s interview with Bishop Barron are so raw and honest. He owned his mistakes and trying to make things right with the people he hurt. He made no excuses or looking for a typical Hollywood “slap on the wrist” outcome. Shia never tried to make himself the victim and I have mad respect for Shia on that because that’s owning your mistakes.
Yeah, I do praise him for that because there’s so many guys that would do what he did and not own up to it. That tells me that you know he knows his mistake. He regrets it he’s really showing remorse. You know that he knows he probably I need to help, and that is refreshing because again that some guys I’ll do that stuff and try to sit there and act like they did nothing wrong. At least he’s only up to what he did. I watched that interview and I feel that Jon made the best decision by doing it and airing it. It was the most genuine authentic and humble thing I have ever seen. It is going to save many lives. These guys are the true definition of men and what beautiful pure core characters these guys have. I am so blown away with how truly impactful this was and will be for years to come. Very honored to have seen it and been positively moved to my core by its authenticity and rawness. The courage is still giving me chills deep to the soul.
Joe is such a phenomenal listener, it’s incredible really how he lets his guests just speak and he reciprocates so calmly and when it’s his turn. Much respect.

If I was being interviewed If they interrupted me 2 times I'd stop em and say do you want to hear this or not? They do it again I'd walk off. As an interviewer show respect to those who take their time to do the interview. And respect the person asking you the questions. It's not rocket science.
Jon, I listened to the Shia podcast. I was married to a mentally-emotionally abusive alcoholic for 15 years. I was sexually assaulted as a teen and young adult. Listening to Shia, a man who struggles deeply and has injured others just as deeply, but who also acknowledges who and what he has been and done, takes complete ownership to these injuries, but is trying desperately to be a better man… gave me hope. People can change. People can heal. People can choose better ways. Changing the mindset takes hard work. God is bigger than all of us. And forgiveness is important. I appreciate that you took a risk with Shia. I hope more injures people listen to what he explains. Thank you.
I have also been in a few emotionally/physically abusive relationships, one of which was really bad and ended up with them being arrested. I stayed with that person for a while afterwards (generally not the right decision) but I ended up losing all the trust I initially carried for them and diving into a brutal depression that forced me to end it. I am still friends with this person. Why? Because they made an effort to be better and while it wasn’t enough to save the relationship, this is still a human being I care for. People who know this criticize me but they’re just a product of the colorless, grayscale-less world we live in. Everybody can be evil. And why we should definitely call out when someone is doing wrong, we should also permit them the ability to understand what they’ve done wrong and allow them to change. It’s kind of how screaming at a dog and kicking it out of the house isn’t going to train it to not jump on guests. Canceling people isn’t going to address the problem, it just promotes fear and gives people an excuse to witch hunt any person they don’t like. Abuse is obviously not okay. But instead of permanently excommunicating abusers from society, we should be more adamant on rehabilitation so that they improve. Sure, there’s some people who are always going to be problematic. But most people act in ways they have seen demonstrated to them as okay and society should work on conditioning those people to become better. Does Hollywood actually give a shit about abuse or rape? Obviously not. It’s all extra credit performative bullshit.

I try to help people all the time with mindset because I broke through a lot on my own, and many people just say I think i'm better than them. Majority of people don't want to change and are stubborn as hell with any advice.
An honor to have watched Jon’s podcast with Shia. Shia seemed so tired, aged and haggard. He was just so raw, an open soul, gosh it was powerful, he seemed genuinely appreciative of someone that had experience what he was experiencing and letting him know there were other ways, better ways through the journey and burdens he was carrying. To know that you must own your screw-ups, to learn from those lessons, that Yes there are better choices to make that will allow you to start healing. It seemed that he came to understand and realized that he needed to put in the work for/to recovery. I believe that he came to understand that Failure was no longer an option. Once you bring a child into this world, you no longer live for yourself. G-d has given you/us many precious things utmost - children. Your friendship with Shia is yet another gift. Again - Thank you Jon and Shia. May G-d continue to Bless Both You.
this is such an important message ! a good man can inspire a bad one to change. i was heartbroken when i found out about Shia’s allegations. i met him when we were kids and in hindsight saw a kid who had a world of pressure on him to give give give everything he had to entertain others. and he did so brilliantly. what he did to hurt others later on was wrong and should be addressed, not be forgotten - but he does truly deserve help because i full-heartedly believe he is beyond capable and worthy of rehabilitation. and imagine how many others he could inspire to do the same x
I did the same thing! I thought he would ruin it and went in skeptical. Watched episode 1 and binged watched the rest of the season in 2 days. He absolutely killed it and owned that role!
I think having him on after the accusations was a great idea bc people grow and learn from their past mistakes and having him on as a friend and giving him a chance to speak for himself was very important. I would say as long as he isn’t that person anymore then he can move forward from that. So thank you Jon for being a friend to him and making sure he’s learning and healing from that state in his life

Just had one of my friends reach out to me today to check on me and tell me he’s proud of me for taking care of my mental health after my Mom and dog died. Meant the world to me, even though I’m in a good place and doing well. The fact that he cares enough about where my mindset is at says volumes of the type of person he is. Having good people in your corner is empowering

If you have "mental health" issues shouldn't you book an counseling session? I believe that everyone should go see a counselor at least once a year for a mental tune-up. This should be part of your yearly physical. People also should book an appointment for a massage and chiropractor each year.

As a woman who suffered sexual abuse and now a social worker.. I whole heartedly agree that these men need someone to lead them and guide them too… there is an awful lot of resources for victims .. but not the other way around and a lot of times these perpetrators are victims of abuse themselves… and some carry it out in there lives and some don’t…I know that may sound weird coming from me but it’s true
Respect to you for saying this! Its easy to assign a victim and a perpetrator but what many fail to realize is that both parties are usually in need of some help. So easy to forget that we're all human here and a lot of us are dealing with some pretty serious internal conflicts.
Many focus on the perceived lack of justice around these types of issues, and while that should definitely be a major concern, I sometimes feel like we should also consider the virtue of mercy as well, and how in many ways it can be forgotten about in these scenarios. Obviously mercy isn't something that should come cheaply or automatically, it is something that should be offered to those willing to open themselves to it if they are truly striving to turn from their wrongful ways. I read something somewhere that went like this: justice and mercy are two parts of one whole. Justice without mercy can become injustice in the same way that mercy without justice can.
@Noran Micholas I agree with the idea that both parties are in need of help. We saw that most recently with the Depp and Heard trials. Both parties were guilty of a lot of unkindness and poor behaviour towards each other. I don't get that vibe from Shia's story (but will accept the info we have is very limited). Sometimes there IS a victim and a perpetrator. Perpetrators still need help, but in a very different way. And it's generally true that they only seem interested in help once they are caught/exposed, which isn't true for victims.
This is why Joe is so freaking awesome! Doesn’t feel the need to interrupt or interject. Ten minutes of listening with hardly a word. He just creates an environment conducive to honest open dialogue
The interview with Shia is my favorite interview Jon's done since he started his podcast. It was the most real and just raw emotional conversation I've heard in a long time on so many different subjects. The awareness Shia had of his choices and decisions up to that point were shocking to hear. Jon was amazing at mediating and being a real friend.
It was interesting to listen to, partly because it was impossible to tell what was bullshit. Shia saying something to the effect of "I was seeing everything in life as an opportunity for performance, but I'm not doing that any more" while delivering what could easily just be another performance made it very difficult to believe anything he said. A bit of a boy who cried wolf situation he's put himself in with his constant bullshit. I'm not even sure I believe his accent is real.

The key word around that interview is redemption. So many people make excuses instead of taking accountability and making amends, so it's honestly refreshing and inspiring. The world needs more examples like that. That and it taught people about real masculinity. Beautiful.
A friend like he's talking about you can only hope or pray for these days. And I hope that I'm that friend for my friends. What Jon said about help for men that are emotionally out of control really hit me. Men seem to have to know everything and hold it all together without any training or help, and then if something goes wrong you're done and labeled useless. It's an all or nothing world, without any room for mistakes anymore, this is why you have those friends to check you.
Every couple of months I have mini panic attacks. I think it’s because I don’t feel free enough. Constantly working. Drinking too much, barley spending time on things I like. I forget about it until one day it hits me and I damn near start crying

Jon, I watched the entirety of that Shia interview. You displayed amazing emotional intelligence, compassion and sensitivity. As a woman, it is incredibly healing and uplifting to listen to a man who has gone thru his own transformationally redemptive process. There is only one man who ever actually apologized to me for his abuse. One. People who are critical of your interviewing him fall in one of two basic categories IMO: (1) they have never gone thru a fall from grace and had to go thru repentance and redemption (2) they have never taken responsibility for their own mistakes and choose to remain bitter and unforgiving towards others. True self-examination and self-responsibility bring humility and repentance for mistakes made. The journey of being a 'successful' human being is to experience victorious redemption through humility and atonement. I met Jon at a Comic Con event about 4 years ago. I spent about 5 minutes with him while we waited for the photographer. He is a chill guy and excessively nice guy. I wish him success in life.

Even before joe was rich, he listened! It's like he is on edge just waiting for you to get it off your chest. He perfect in his facial expressions too. I've noticed Joe can give them a look and they can jus go straight back into the story with more passion.

I randomly tuned into this clip after searching for that transformers meme. I listened to half of this one and paused it to visit Jon Bernthal’s Real Ones podcast. In that interview Shia was fully transparent. In every aspect of that conversation he had a well thought out intelligent response. He was genuine and honest and tried to conceal nothing. I don’t know how you can dislike the guy or try to defame him. He’s honest and real and I love hearing his thought process.
This is what other real men (not little boys who got older) discussing things should be. This is real manly behavior. Not rude bravado and toxic anger. Ths strength is stronger ther lifting stregth. Cant get that at the gym. Work your minds and bodys. Be well rounded. Be understanding. Be compassionate.
As someone who has suffered abuse in relationships, I really enjoyed watching Jon's interview with Shia. It was encouraging to see men talk honestly about these issues and having overcome them. I hope it can help open the door for more men to find help and growth.
I think what he did was deplorable. I also think shutting him away from society would do no good, the same goes for anyone. Rehabilitation and re-education will do a hell of a lot more good than harsh punishment will.

History has shown that often times people have been given far too many chances and will abuse that forever until finally cut off. I met Shia back in 2013/2014 in Sydney. Hung out for the night and he was the most down to earth guy I'd ever met. Open and honest about everything he spoke about and just had an amazing personality. Wish we could have hung out more
That has to be the most genuine human exchanges Ive ever seen. You can really tell Jon cares for Shia and doesn’t want him to become irredeemable. Allowing Shia to speak his peace and Jon telling him “Hey that was messed up, and you know you messed up, but I wanna help so it doesn’t happen again” is a truly kind thing to do. We need more people like Jon in this world.

Just the realness, rawness, and honesty to them are amazing. The deep emotion and willingness to put yourself out there and show your vulnerability makes any conversation/interview amazing no matter who you are or what you’ve done

Such a true statement. I’ve been stuck in a abusive relationship for 17 years. Half of my life. I constantly have to make up lies to to cover the black eyes, busted lips, and scratches. It’s a lonely world when you are a men being abused by a woman. No resources, no help, and everyone thinks it’s a big joke. But if the roles were reversed it wouldn’t be a joke to anyone. I’m so scared to leave because my kids are the only family I have. I grew up in state custody and I can’t lose them. But both of my in laws are well known attorneys with unlimited resources. So it’s a tough battle. In my area courts almost always side with the female. So I tough it out so I can be with my kids.

I watched the clip and it brought me to tears, because you could feel everything he said even without going through what Shia has gone through in his life. Obviously abuse in any form is not something be swept away but at the same time as he said a lot of the time instead of rehabilitating people who have done things they regret themselves a lot of the time society decides they should be thrown away somewhere left alone, vs what Jon did and have a real conversation of healing and understanding to the point where there was no judgement just words between two people, you could tell even though Jon was disgusted by what Shia might have done, that as a real friend he wasn’t just going to just cut him off but instead wanted to be someone who can be there for him to check on him give it to him straight etc. you can tell he wants the best for him
everyone deserves the chances to redeem themselves if we are truely to be a compassionate society we need to help people see the good in themselves so that they can grow & become a better human but they need to want to do that first. That full interview with Shia as well as Shia’s interview with Bishop Barron are so raw and honest. He owned his mistakes and trying to make things right with the people he hurt. I watched that interview and I feel that Jon made the best decision by doing it and airing it. It was the most genuine authentic and humble thing I have ever seen. It is going to save many lives. These guys are the true definition of men and what beautiful pure core characters these guys have. I am so blown away with how truly impactful this was and will be for years to come. Very honored to have seen it and been positively moved to my core by its authenticity and rawness. The courage is still giving me chills deep to the soul.
Joe is such a phenomenal listener, it’s incredible really how he lets his guests just speak and he reciprocates so calmly and when it’s his turn. Much respect.

Jon, I listened to the Shia podcast. I was married to a mentally-emotionally abusive alcoholic for 15 years. I was sexually assaulted as a teen and young adult. Listening to Shia, a man who struggles deeply and has injured others just as deeply, but who also acknowledges who and what he has been and done, takes complete ownership to these injuries, but is trying desperately to be a better man… gave me hope. People can change. People can heal. People can choose better ways. Changing the mindset takes hard work. God is bigger than all of us. And forgiveness is important. I appreciate that you took a risk with Shia. I hope more injures people listen to what he explains. Thank you.
I have also been in a few emotionally/physically abusive relationships, one of which was really bad and ended up with them being arrested. I stayed with that person for a while afterwards (generally not the right decision) but I ended up losing all the trust I initially carried for them and diving into a brutal depression that forced me to end it. I am still friends with this person. Why? Because they made an effort to be better and while it wasn’t enough to save the relationship, this is still a human being I care for. People who know this criticize me but they’re just a product of the colorless, grayscale-less world we live in. Everybody can be evil. And why we should definitely call out when someone is doing wrong, we should also permit them the ability to understand what they’ve done wrong and allow them to change. It’s kind of how screaming at a dog and kicking it out of the house isn’t going to train it to not jump on guests. Canceling people isn’t going to address the problem, it just promotes fear and gives people an excuse to witch hunt any person they don’t like.
Abuse is obviously not okay. But instead of permanently excommunicating abusers from society, we should be more adamant on rehabilitation so that they improve. Sure, there’s some people who are always going to be problematic. But most people act in ways they have seen demonstrated to them as okay and society should work on conditioning those people to become better. Does Hollywood actually give a shit about abuse or rape? Obviously not. It’s all extra credit performative bullshit.

Most people see people like this as annoying or arrogant and push them away. I try to help people all the time with mindset because I broke through a lot on my own, and many people just say I think i'm better than them. Majority of people don't want to change and are stubborn as hell with any advice.
An honor to have watched Jon’s podcast with Shia. Shia seemed so tired, aged and haggard. He was just so raw, an open soul, gosh it was powerful, he seemed genuinely appreciative of someone that had experience what he was experiencing and letting him know there were other ways, better ways through the journey and burdens he was carrying. To know that you must own your screw-ups, to learn from those lessons, that Yes there are better choices to make that will allow you to start healing. It seemed that he came to understand and realized that he needed to put in the work for/to recovery. I believe that he came to understand that Failure was no longer an option. Once you bring a child into this world, you no longer live for yourself. G-d has given you/us many precious things utmost - children.

this is such an important message ! a good man can inspire a bad one to change. i was heartbroken when i found out about Shia’s allegations. i met him when we were kids and in hindsight saw a kid who had a world of pressure on him to give give give everything he had to entertain others. and he did so brilliantly. what he did to hurt others later on was wrong and should be addressed, not be forgotten - but he does truly deserve help because i full-heartedly believe he is beyond capable and worthy of rehabilitation. and imagine how many others he could inspire to do the same x

As a woman who suffered sexual abuse and now a social worker.. I whole heartedly agree that these men need someone to lead them and guide them too… there is an awful lot of resources for victims .. but not the other way around and a lot of times these perpetrators are victims of abuse themselves… and some carry it out in there lives and some don’t…I know that may sound weird coming from me but it’s true

Respect to you for saying this! Its easy to assign a victim and a perpetrator but what many fail to realize is that both parties are usually in need of some help. So easy to forget that we're all human here and a lot of us are dealing with some pretty serious internal conflicts.
Yes many times there is abuse both ways. Women get off way too easy. It's damaging everything in western cultures.
Many focus on the perceived lack of justice around these types of issues, and while that should definitely be a major concern, I sometimes feel like we should also consider the virtue of mercy as well, and how in many ways it can be forgotten about in these scenarios. Obviously mercy isn't something that should come cheaply or automatically, it is something that should be offered to those willing to open themselves to it if they are truly striving to turn from their wrongful ways. I read something somewhere that went like this: justice and mercy are two parts of one whole. Justice without mercy can become injustice in the same way that mercy without justice can.
@Noran Micholas I agree with the idea that both parties are in need of help. We saw that most recently with the Depp and Heard trials. Both parties were guilty of a lot of unkindness and poor behaviour towards each other. I don't get that vibe from Shia's story (but will accept the info we have is very limited). Sometimes there IS a victim and a perpetrator. Perpetrators still need help, but in a very different way. And it's generally true that they only seem interested in help once they are caught/exposed, which isn't true for victims.
I am CRAZY about both Jon and Shia. Shia is a HUGE talent, and deserves a chance.

The interview with Shia is my favorite interview Jon's done since he started his podcast. It was the most real and just raw emotional conversation I've heard in a long time on so many different subjects. The awareness Shia had of his choices and decisions up to that point were shocking to hear. Jon was amazing at mediating and being a real friend.

Incredibly impressive how Jon interviewed him and his patience.
It was interesting to listen to, partly because it was impossible to tell what was bullshit. Shia saying something to the effect of "I was seeing everything in life as an opportunity for performance, but I'm not doing that any more" while delivering what could easily just be another performance made it very difficult to believe anything he said. A bit of a boy who cried wolf situation he's put himself in with his constant bullshit. I'm not even sure I believe his accent is real.

The key word around that interview is redemption. So many people make excuses instead of taking accountability and making amends, so it's honestly refreshing and inspiring. The world needs more examples like that. That and it taught people about real masculinity. Beautiful.

A friend like he's talking about you can only hope or pray for these days. And I hope that I'm that friend for my friends. What Jon said about help for men that are emotionally out of control really hit me. Men seem to have to know everything and hold it all together without any training or help, and then if something goes wrong you're done and labeled useless. It's an all or nothing world, without any room for mistakes anymore, this is why you have those friends to check you.
That IS how friends act. Anything less is not a friend. I used to have a ton of "friends", but i realised i really only had a few.

I, being sober over 33 years in AA, felt that the interview with Shia was absolutely amazing. Because there was no real judgment or shame coming from Jon. Just a broken man, pouring out his life in front of a microphone and camera to a friend. It was extremely powerful.

Jon, I watched the entirety of that Shia interview. You displayed amazing emotional intelligence, compassion and sensitivity. As a woman, it is incredibly healing and uplifting to listen to a man who has gone thru his own transformationally redemptive process. There is only one man who ever actually apologized to me for his abuse. One. People who are critical of your interviewing him fall in one of two basic categories IMO: (1) they have never gone thru a fall from grace and had to go thru repentance and redemption (2) they have never taken responsibility for their own mistakes and choose to remain bitter and unforgiving towards others. True self-examination and self-responsibility bring humility and repentance for mistakes made. The journey of being a 'successful' human being is to experience victorious redemption through humility and atonement. I met Jon at a Comic Con event about 4 years ago. I spent about 5 minutes with him while we waited for the photographer. He is a chill guy and excessively nice guy. I wish him success in life.
Same here, got to meet him at motor city comicon just prior to him filming season 1 of the Punisher. Super nice guy and humble. Told him I was looking forward to him playing Frank Castle and he said his goal was to not let the fans down.

That interview with Shia was probably the best podcast i’ve ever watched in my life. I’ve sent it to a lot of people. We’re all on a journey and it’s great to see other perspectives.
You know that Shia is completely full of ish, right? The guy is one of the biggest scumbags in Hollywood, and that's not easy to accomplish.
He thinks black people deserve to go to hell for their skin tone, and the hatred in his voice and eyes when he said that tells me that's how he truly feels.
If a Conservative had ever made comments even remotely similar to what Shia has made over the years they would be rightfully cancelled. Shia gets a second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth chance for whatever reason.

I randomly tuned into this clip after searching for that transformers meme. I listened to half of this one and paused it to visit Jon Bernthal’s Real Ones podcast. In that interview Shia was fully transparent. In every aspect of that conversation he had a well thought out intelligent response. He was genuine and honest and tried to conceal nothing. I don’t know how you can dislike the guy or try to defame him. He’s honest and real and I love hearing his thought process.

As someone who has suffered abuse in relationships, I really enjoyed watching Jon's interview with Shia. It was encouraging to see men talk honestly about these issues and having overcome them. I hope it can help open the door for more men to find help and growth.
I think what he did was deplorable. I also think shutting him away from society would do no good, the same goes for anyone. Rehabilitation and re-education will do a hell of a lot more good than harsh punishment will.
It would help if women can take accountability for their actions as well a lot of the times women are pushing men to these limits

I met Shia back in 2013/2014 in Sydney. Hung out for the night and he was the most down to earth guy I'd ever met. Open and honest about everything he spoke about and just had an amazing personality. Wish we could have hung out more

Just the realness, rawness, and honesty to them are amazing. Shia legitimately needed the podcast interview with Jon. He needed to let a lot of emotions out and show who he was at that time.

Such a true statement. I’ve been stuck in a abusive relationship for 17 years. Half of my life. I constantly have to make up lies to to cover the black eyes, busted lips, and scratches. It’s a lonely world when you are a men being abused by a woman. No resources, no help, and everyone thinks it’s a big joke. But if the roles were reversed it wouldn’t be a joke to anyone. I’m so scared to leave because my kids are the only family I have. I grew up in state custody and I can’t lose them. But both of my in laws are well known attorneys with unlimited resources. So it’s a tough battle. In my area courts almost always side with the female. So I tough it out so I can be with my kids.

The interview is fantastic, Shia is very genuine and addresses how his own ego and issues hurt people. I saw someone truly trying to be better.
I watched the clip and it brought me to tears, because you could feel everything he said even without going through what Shia has gone through in his life. Obviously abuse in any form is not something be swept away but at the same time as he said a lot of the time instead of rehabilitating people who have done things they regret themselves a lot of the time society decides they should be thrown away somewhere left alone, vs what Jon did and have a real conversation of healing and understanding to the point where there was no judgement just words between two people, you could tell even though Jon was disgusted by what Shia might have done, that as a real friend he wasn’t just going to just cut him off but instead wanted to be someone who can be there for him to check on him give it to him straight etc. you can tell he wants the best for him
everyone deserves the chances to redeem themselves if we are truely to be a compassionate society we need to help people see the good in themselves so that they can grow & become a better human but they need to want to do that first. Jon's conversations with people on his pod cast are very much like Joe Rogan's more about the guest than the interviewer ...they are all important conversations & I find I learn lots from them all

His podcast with Shia was by far my favorite and most memorable to date!!! Shia took the time to man up n fix what he broke like any man should and still wrkn to get better n help others!! Jon is a class act, what a great human being!!! God Bless n stay safe guys!!!

You're absolutely right...I was an out of control pain-killer addict and alcoholic for many years and the "friends" I had around me only made things worse. NO ONE ever gave me good advice or asked me what was wrong. Listening to that interview was really hard. He let out so much and you could tell it was real. I'm glad Jon does what he does.

Jon is a real friend, Hollywood needs more men like him. His Shia Interview/Podcast is one the best… definitely worth a listen.
