Is the shifter still off the car? If so, it is hard to shift into reverse because of the detent spring. Try clamping the housing to something to give you leverage. If the shifter is back on the car already, then you won’t be able to shift into reverse if the 1/2 and 3/4 shift arms aren’t adjusted properly to force the transmission into neutral.

That play in the housing isn’t because it was taken apart that’s how they all are till it’s installed
i did that to my shifter same shifter how come it dosnt go into reverse what do you think it might be ?
