    I used these bushings (and heavy duty spring clips) when attaching the shift rods to the gates on my rebuilt factory Hurst shifter that I installed in my '69 AMX. It made a huge difference. Now I know exactly which gear I'm in (T-10 with actuator studs) and there's no more hangup between first and second. Everything is nice and tight. The shifter I took off was an early 70s Hurst aftermarket product, and there was an awful lot of slop where the rods attach to the gates.

    Thank you for posting this helpful information. I may be mistaken, but I have been taught that bushings should always be softer the the base material that they're in, so this is a new way understanding a bushing in this context.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  4 года назад

      Depends on the application. It's not like the rods or arms are spinning inside of one another at a high RPM. In this case strength of joined components is critical.

    Great Information!
    I remember struggling one time in the 70's trying to figure out where that adapter went after I ripped first gear out of the cluster of an M21. I tried everything to figure out where it went on the M22 I even read the instructions! They just has a black and white breakdown that pointed out where they went... Finally I gave up and put it together the way I thought it should go and everything worked fine. The next trip to the speed shop I mentioned it to the guy and he told me "Oh no..you have to put those in or youll have a sloppy fit" Needless to say I (like an idiot) am back under there when I got home going through the entire experience again... Hurst had very poor instructions. My Trans didn't even use those... I had to make a long distance call to NJ to get the facts about that dam part.. This Video is bound to help somebody. I wish I had access to this info when I was a kid...
    Thank you for posting this.
    Side Note: The AVE channel would be saying "Focus you fauck!" as he argues with his camera. LOL

    I just installed my first Hurst Comp Plus shifter on my Ford 4 speed Top Loader trans. Within a week I had a spring clip pop off on me. Fortunately I was in my driveway when it happened. I have since safety wired the clips in the shifter but the clips on the trans linkage I couldn't get to so I bent the ends of the wires that stick out of the linkage holes even further than designed as a temporary fix. I will be purchasing a set of your clips for sure. Great video and very helpful!

    Paul another great video, when you mentioned the Hurst pit pack bushings it reminded me of a guy who came into the auto store I worked at many years ago , He said that he used them on his GM A body convertible in some areas because the plastic ones broke. I looked up 68-69 GM A body convertible bushings and yours look identical to the cylinder eyelet bushings and may work in the other convertible bushing areas as well. Just wanted to pass on another MARKET for your bushings. Also thanks for having them made in the USA it means a lot to us car guys. Jay

    I purchased Paul's bushings and clips kit. Installed them with some grease on my shifter rods. Wow. Big difference. For years I thought the Pit Pack bushings and putting extra bend on the stock clips was as good as it got (sloppy at best). There is no comparison to the rigid /solid feel of the rods now. Great kit Paul. Thank you.

    Thank you Paul. You have made it very clear to me that there are many different kinds of shifters and parts out here. My 1969 pontiac m20 shifter has no adjustable stops and the levers that bolt to the trans will not accept a bushing. They are like bushingless type. It shifts ok but it is hard to get out of reverse. I will order the bushings and springs from you soon.

Is there any way to get more performance and get rid of the slop in the stock shift rod rubber bushings? I know upgrading to a hurst shifter is best. But that's a lot of dough

    Hi again Paul, definitely will apply your bullet proof logic here to my Hurst shifter.
    Question is though is it worth investing in a replacement Hurst shifter with shifting rods?
    They seem pretty rare so the idea was not to miss the opportunity of having a replacement. Or could I just find a Competition or Super shifter and with some adjustments fit that instead?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  7 лет назад +1

      Depends on the make and model. If you can make the one you have fit correctly use it. The new shifters are over 500 USD and personally the rods seem smaller in diameter that the older ones.

    Great video, Paul. Looks like the quality of Hurst shifters is going down hill. I had a factory Ford Hurst shifter on a 1970 Cougar and the rods were twice the diameter of those. It sure took a lot of punishment in the days I was young and crazy.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  8 лет назад +1

      It appears that only popular part numbers are being run and all manufacturing and packaging is now done in China. Rods are thinner, installation kits sometimes come with wrong length bolts and for the most part nobody at Hurst really knows or understands the very staple line that the brand is known for. Oddly you think manufacturing in China would be cheaper but sadly someone probably miscalculated tooling costs and they are selling at the highest price they have ever been. I predict in three years other companies will make similar shifters in the states and the brand will be reduced to making floor mats. With the Hurst logo of course.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  8 лет назад

      +Robert Perrigo Thanks for watching. Slop in the "H" pattern is usually due to the shifter body internal gates being worn. I've found that the springs collapse on the arms and adjusters allowing the rods to flop around and rattle.
