I purchased a Hurst Competition Plus shifter from Paul last year. He reworked the shifter and applied the tricks demistrated here in the video. I have the shifter mounted to my 1968 toploader 4 speed in a 1990 mustang. The toploader and shifter works great with no chassis mods to the car. The shifter works wonderful and very short throws. I just push straight up for 3rd and the shifter does all the work; very smooth. Thank you Sir.

It's no longer the same as when Hurst Campbell owned the company in Pennsylvania. quality has suffered since then. My shifter was built and installed by Hurst in their Warminster Pa plant in 1969 and it's rock solid. Never misses....never hangs up.

Paul, this is an awesome video that highlights the differences between a made in the USA Hurst unit from back in the day as opposed to the products they sell now with lazy tolerance standards. Good for you for taking the time to "rebuild" these new shifters to work as the designers intended back in the 60s. Your bushing & clip kit will improve the performance even further. All of my shifters have those installed.

Shows how a product that we were used to with it's construction has changed so much over the years and that you should never assume that it's going to be exactly the same as the older models. Shifters are indeed an area where the little details that Paul is describing play a super important part. I'm old enough to have had some of those older models from the 70's and even the late 60's and we used to do things that we could think of to make them shift better but not to the extent that Paul is showing us here. What we did learn was that if it's not really close to perfect then you are going to have shifting problems and miss gears. This video shows us all the little details such as checking the thickness of the metal on the main housing and how that affects the side play and how to fix it with custom shims. Now we probably all want to get our shifters massaged by Paul to make them as good as they can be. Thanks for this video and also to let you know that the B-W Super T 10 from my Corvette that you rebuilt for me 2 years ago is working perfectly and I am proud to have it in my car. Mike from Atlanta.

to bad hurst let QC slide down ( was the 1960's gold standard for shifting/manuals transmission quality in manufacturing ) wonder where the parts are being made and or assembled and packaging ect in 2018-up. side note hopefully the newer TR6060/TR6070 stuff doesn't slide down as well and or mopar-60's stuff
tite/good QC almost win's the race by itself and i though it was mr.4-speed/sox teams practice for perfect shifting and most people cannot do it as well come to find out it's the tool/car helping them win

Just got my Camaro kinda on the road the other day for a test drive. I have one of Paul's brand new, rebuilt Shifters.
First time I shifted into third, I thought the damn thing went back into first! It shifted to third so fast, smooth and tight, I couldn't tell what was going on.
    This is no joke.
My job is shifting 10 speeds and 13 speeds and 18 speeds all day for 12 hours straight. Ive been driving rigs for 12 years.

I bought a Competition Plus shifter about 15 years ago and thought it was super sloppy, now I know why. My brother's is a 70's era and feels much more tight in shifting. Also, mine came with a really long shift handle, I feel like it sticks up way to high, which makes the throw really long. My brothers is much shorter, wish I knew what he has, but it came to him like that, already installed in the car so he does not know, but it feels and works so much better than mine.

Hi Paul. Excellent video. I've been dealing with the sloppy shifting of my competition plus since it was installed back in 2010. This shifter is nothing like a super shifter I had back in the 70's. This comp plus got stuck in reverse once too. I wanted to change out to a super shifter, but I want to keep the console in this car (69 Camaro) and didn't want to cut the tunnel. Since most of the nylon bushings in the rods were pretty chewed up, I installed your Hurst Hardened Steel Bushing and Clip Kit last year. The steel took some of the slop out, but I'm not happy with it. And now that I see where the additional slop comes from I'm going to either rebuild this shifter to get proper tolerances or try to make a super shifter work with my console. What do you think about the possibility of installing a super shifter with the console and without cutting the tunnel? The car is an X55 SS coupe with a SBC and an M22. The car originally came with a stick, so the hole for the shifter is there. But the floor pans and most of the other sheet metal is original, so I've put up with the sloppy shifter because I don't want to cut the tunnel and remove the console. Do you have any ideas to modify the main body of a super shifter and / or maybe use a different mounting plate? Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

Paul.....GREAT video. My Muncie is hanging up in reverse. I spent hours! under the car trying to figure out where it was binding. Your video allowed me to get it unstuck in 5 minutes. Now the question is: how do I get my shifter to you for re-build and what is the turn-around time? Thanks again!!

Just subscribed.. ABSOLUTELY Love your content and your expertise! I would like to know what you would do with a Pistol Grip Hurst in a 1972 833 in my Plymouth Road Runner! Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Paul your videos are amazing! I just repaired all the slop in the linkage with your bushing and clip kit on my Old Mastershift. Do they or you make or recommend a rebuilt kit for the shifter itself. The one in my panel truck is over 50 years old and could stand a freshen up.
