Pokemon Champions. They are the final boss on every new Pokemon Journey. Over the years, we have faced off against some pretty awesome champions and some that are….uhh yeah. But at the end of the day, we still have to acknowledge that they were strong enough to get where they are. However, we must also acknowledge that some are going to be stronger than others. That’s why today I am going to be giving you all my rankings of the champions from weakest to strongest. There will be plenty of different factors, but I think the biggest one will end up being diversity in their teams. Doesn’t matter how high leveled a team is, if they’re all weak to the same few types, it’s relatively easy to pull a sweep off on them. Also note for the Gen 7 games I will be placing Kukui and Hau on the list. While technically you are the first champion of the Alola region you still have a final battle to win to get that title, so I think they’re applicable on this list. Anyways, with the intro out of the way there’s nothing else to do but get started.

Red isnt consider a champion since you can only fight him in mt silver and not in pokemon league, quite stupid if you ask me since he's the real champion of kanto and johto.

Strongest or not Cynthia was my favorite battle. My torterra surviving with 1 hp after an earthquake against her garachomp and finishing it off with an earthquake of its own.

Diantha was really good in the anime but in the games she was a piece of cake & it’s because once you reach the champion your pretty much in the same levels of her mons.
@@albabimam1114 There are no good rock types available at that point, that arent weak to ice (one of his dragonites has blizzard), ampharos gets bodied by dragonite, and gyrados will be fried by his thunder dragonite.

Iris was a very, very stressful fight for me when I was younger. No champ has ever put up as much of a fight as her except for the time I fought Lance with a heavily underleveled and unprepared team.
Lance was definitely tough for me considering the stupid level jump in HG/SS
Yeah for me too, not even Cynthia was that hard for me, but Iris made me reset probably more than 10 times, i was still a kid tho, now i can beat Cynthia easily since i know how strategy in pokemon works.
I used her team on Showdown and it was crazy fun. Gamefreak just knew what to put together man

Yeah,I feel offended as a person who played pokemon ruby with no cheats and getting super oofed,specially in Phoebe even tho she's not the champion and just the second of the elite four she was the hardest of all the elite four members i've battled xd
This feels more like "who has the best diversity" more than who's the strongest. Putting a trainer who only has 3 moves on his team over anyone else is kind of odd

I’m also bothered by the fact he didn’t considered them in their strongest teams and battles because I consider that Steven Oras rematch team is way better than Leon, Trace and Diantha
I agree but having the diversity means that you have more coverage against other Pokémon types so you’re team will be stronger. He did say diversity to much though
santiago Castellanos I didn’t think Stevens team was that hard. I wiped his entire team with my Torkoal that was ranked second in the beauty competition
On top of that levels do matter even though they weren’t a factor for rankings. It was so easy to be overleveled in xy, let’s go, and sm. It made those champions look like a total joke when you had a level 60 partner eevee with perfect ivs. You’d have to grind levels if you wanted to beat champions like Lance and Alder, and ESPECIALLY Cynthia. Your team is usually about level 50 when you get there, and all of Cynthia’s team is +60. Alder will absolutely shred you if don’t grind Audino in black and white.

I Love Iris as a Champion. She is just too adorable, and her Team is really really good. Also her music hits hard.

Iris was fine. Vs Kukui I had to strategize big time, cause my mons were underleveled. Took me 5-7 tries.

To the people that might say that Cynthia was pretty easy, let me ask you. Did you play the game with the function that lets you know what Pokémon is coming out next and let’s you swap your Pokémon right away? Because having that advantage turned off is what made Cynthia the Queen that she rightfully is. Not knowing what Pokémon is coming next is what makes the games much more exciting 🤘🏼

I used set mode for BDSP Cynthia I'm pretty sure, and I'm not sure if it's just because the game is easier but even with my doodoo garbage PU team and a Piplup she wasn't crazy difficult

Well I think that the point was to show that while some champions are strong overall, others are far stronger in the sense that they have true diversity and can counter the player more easily.

M8 the entire Johto region in general is weaker. If Lance was Level 66 like Cynthia he would easily outlevel you by like 16+ levels
Steven is more Earth-elemental than specifically Steel. He has all three Earth types (Rock, Ground, Steel).
Wouldn’t Grass be the fourth Earth type? Because Grass/plants grows out of the Ground.

Diantha is a lot stronger than Steven, because her team doesn’t really overlap, and Goodra is an absolute disgustingly powerful Pokémon
Diantha's team looks strong on paper but with the EXP share, powerful Mega evolutions and Kalos having an absolutely massive variety of powerful pokemon to choose from she never seems to pose a real threat

God, Leon was legitimately TERRIFYING in my Nuzlocke. Easily the most memorable pokemon battle I've ever had, and Ijust barely scraped by with a single survival. Wicker the Chandelure almost died TWICE and had to solo four of his pokemon, and it was t e r r i f y i n g

Blue: No one clear answer, but a well balanced team works.
Lance: Lapras
Steven: The legal team of Manectric, Machamp and Swampert.
Wallace: The legal team of Manectric, Skarmory and Sceptile.
Cynthia: Good luck.
Alder: The legal team of Gigalith and Conkeldurr, attorneys at law.
Iris: Samurott, with Terrakion in the back.
Diantha: Aegislash (like a hot knife through butter...)
Kukui: Have a Steel type take out most of the team, then have your fire type take out the magnet, and let whatever you starter counter is do its job.)
Hau: he’s not that hard... just do whatever you did throughout the play through.
Trace: a light breeze
Leon: Coalossal with stealth rock + something to take out the dragons. (I suggest a fairy.)

not even close to that I beat Cynthia with three pokemon Leon was only less of a challenge because I was way better at Pokemon
by the way they were Empoleon and Luxray not that overleveled only level 65 they were the only non HM slaves on my team and my Giratina didn't even need to battle

I know that there is an entire playthrough to consider... But my sinnoh team is based on trying to counter Cynthia 😂 She's THAT tough to beat. Her full restores are a annoying af too.
Considering you had an entire team based on beating her and needed to spam an item that fully heals you and removes status conditions, compared to needing at most 3 for the others, yes she is much harder than the others.
Yeah I am usually a cautious guy so I don't keep frail pokemon on my team, but for her I kept a Weavile on my team.
She is the second hardest champion of all time and definitely deserves that spot but sense he is technically a champion red easily would clap like HOLY is he over powered took my 18 trys no cap

I think the irony of this whole listing is that for me especially when you notice the transition from Steven being champion to Wallace becoming the champion in Emerald makes all the sense in the world. his team was literally tailor made to destroy Stevens steel/rock type pokemon team.

Have you ever played X and Y with the experience share off? Dianthas team is much, much harder when you play the game that way.
Sure, a champion is easy when the game overlevels you to hell and back, the entirety of X and Y are easy. her team is legitimately pretty darn good, and half of her pokemon (Mega Gardevoir, Goodra, Hawlucha) are actually highly noteworthy threats.
She's not the best champion by any means, but she's a far cry from the weakest as well.
Alexander Moore but the thing with Pokémon X and Y, when you turn off the EXP share the game is not fair at all, I feel that the games are basically unplayable without the EXP share

I’m shocked at how many people seem to think Blue is all that strong. I always thought he was pretty easy myself. His Alakazam is a huge threat, and do is Blastoise if he has it. But the others are all pretty easy to KO imo. They just weren’t all that great pre-Gen IV. Gyarados could potentially be a threat in Gen 1 alone if you can’t handle Hyper Beam, but that issue was resolved in Gen 3.
I mean. He’s far from the weakest, but I always put him in the Bottom 5 myself
@@DigitalxGamer Gyarados is the only Pokémon with Alakazam and the starter that can be a threat. All the others are a complete joke.

@@groudonvert7286 I don't even think Gyarados is that great a threat due to its easily-exploitable weakness. The only reason it's a potential problem in Gen 1 is because Hyper Beam doesn't need to recharge if you KO the opponent. But in Gen 3, that issue is fixed, so even if it knocks someone out, all you have to do is send out anyone with a halfway decent Electric attack to finish it xD
Trace & Diantha were not challenging AT ALL! I Never lost any of my Pokémon against them.

He's ranking the Champions based on team variety, not difficulty. Difficulty in Pokémon is subjective anyway because people have called Cynthia easy.
Because any game after BW are easy AF. That has nothing to do with how good their teams are.

The only real threat on Alder's team is Volcarona. The beastly bug will murder you if you're not careful, and we should be thankful it can't get anymore than four moves.

I feel like she got buffed instead, taking out Gastrodon for Togekiss reduces the weakness to grass on her team (Milotic).

@@odin1303 The levels are lower, her Togekiss has hustle (not serene grace) for some reason, and it adds weaknesses to electric and rock. Plus, her gastrodon had sludge bomb specifically for the grass type coverage...

@Skurk IMO, it would be a buff if her togekiss had serene grace... but it has hustle (which, since all her togekiss's moves are special, it literally does nothing). The levels were also lowered because, at that point in the game, you were probably low 50s on all your pokemon.

I see the list like this: It isn’t really based on difficulty, but more of if the team is stronger. So Diantha has a better team but is an easier fight, while Steven has a worse team but a harder fight
Personally though I didn’t have a difficult time with Steven
He has two hard Teammembers, the Rest is pretty easy.
I quite literally lost against lance multiple times especially with my starter meganium ( no ice punch feraligator )...and given the availability of dragon types in that era, I think that you should reconsider his position.

The only trainers i had trouble with were: a random wobbuffet in reflection cave (not a trainer, but annoying af), and grant (I had a pokemon 4x weak to rock, and a normal type)
I didn’t have any type advantages so drasna beat me about 5 times (the sodding noibat)
I just nuzlocked pokemon y and her mega Gardevoir made 3 crits in a row and swiped my team but then I killed it with my last pokemon

I think its not good to judge a Champ just by his type-diversity... when you consider that ice and dragon types were pretty rare in gold/silver Heartgold/SoulSilver, you can have a pretty hard time against him...

I was once cocky and thought I could take on Steven with a lv 100 gardevoir and a lv 72 Infernape and 4 lower level Pokémon with Lucky eggs and the exp share on so that my lower level Pokémons could gain some experience. I lost in the most embarassing way possible to that Metagross
red is optional so he's just an extra boss the credits play before you fight red

Lance gave me trouble in both Gen I AND Gen II, but he was more of a challenge when he was in the Elite Four than as Champion. (They should have given him a Kingdra in Gold & Silver. That REALLY would have hurt!)

The fact that blue evolved his growlithe too early so arcanine has ember is hilarious. Also wing attack on pidgeot, psybeam on alakazam and both tail whip and leer on rhydon.
Hence, I prefer the Firered/Leafgreen Blue.
Let’s all be fr when you face these trainers in the games, none of their strategies matter against a level 100 Pokémon
I am very happy you give Diantha credit where credit is due. She is a very strong champion. It just so happens she just isn't high enough leveled in such an easy game to be noticed as such considering how much experience the player gets and can be over leveled without really trying.
Kukui is also quite amazing. He surprised me with how versatile he was and gave me a run for my money.
Trace...I can't say the guy deserves so much credit though. I mean Red, Blue, and Green/Leaf all have much more impressive teams in my mind in that game. At least have 1 pokemon with full movesets.
Alder is in my opinion a lot more powerful than he seems, but in comparison to Ghetsis and N....no he is easier. But anyone that gives alot of attention to bug types in elite 4 or champion has my respect.
Cynthia. She truly has the meanest team for the unprepared and Platinum is arguably stronger with that Togekiss of nightmares. I fear that thing more than the Gastrodon anyday. And I still struggle with her awesome rematch to this day. She is ALWAYS ready for you.
Iris and Cynthia will always be my favorite champions, their Pokémon’s power scare me immensely.
Personally, I don’t rly think trace should be that high. I think trace should have been under leon. Same with kukui. Leon was actually pretty powerful especially because he can gigantamax.
I honestly wish Pokémon would add a hard mode that increases the intelligence of the AI and changes some of the Pokémon’s move pools to be more effective for the team. Would be really interesting.

Radlup DL not really, I’m pretty sure they can think of something better than “use recover on full hp” or even if a Pokémon has earthquake and can OHKO my Cinderace they decide it’s best to hit me with flamethrower 😂. They def can add a little more difficulty to the game.

To be fair, Mr. Steven Stone is a decent champion because of that Cradily that is hard to beat. And he is my favorite champion.
Diantha's is like Steven, mostly carried by her team's ace. I would have put her lower than Iris for sure. 4 of her Pokemon are weak to ice, that's worse than Unova's Dragon master
Trace's Team is diverse, but I honestly don't see why that puts him so high on the list. I haven't played his games, but his team doesn't feel that threatening to me.
Lance I actually agree on. Main reason he's hard is how bad his games are at allowing you to grind. His Pokemon are all pretty good individually, but as a team it's just so braindead to counter them.
Also, If it wasn't for Reshiram/Zekrom N's team would probably be worse than Alder's.
Trace isnt that strong. As someone who played LGE, and had a team weaker than his and still beat him- shows that he is majorly held down by lack of held items and abilities.
He'd be stronger if he was in a mainline game- but if we are talking in the vacumn of the Let's Go Games- he aint difficult at all because well...none of that game is difficult
I agree. As for Blue, I'd have put him way lower, perhaps even at the bottom of the list.
His team's movesets are horrendous. Whirlwind on Pidgeot? Barrage on Exeggutor with only 3 moves? No STAB moves on Rhydon? Ember and Roar on Arcanine? I could go on.
I also had to laugh at "Pidgeot is probably the best Flying type based on the options". Er, no. Dodrio is considered to be the best Normal/Flying type in Gen 1. "Rhydon of course packing quite the punch". Seriously? Fury Attack is weak, and Horn Drill doesn't even work if you are faster than Rhydon, which is a very slow Pokemon!
Blue is overrated. The only Pokemon he has that is any threat at all is his Alakazam, and that is only because Psychic types and the special stat were broken in Gen 1. There is NO WAY he should be that high on the list.

He made good points about what holds Alder, Lance or Steven down, but is so generous with Trace and Diantha.

I’m really surprised diantha made it that high. A lucario wipes her team. I don’t remember all 4 moves mine had but it for sure had aura sphere, shadow claw, dragon pulse and something else. He alone destroyed her entire team with ease

Lucario is an extremely versatile Pokémon. That logic applies to practically every champion
SNM: Nightmare Hollow that still doesn’t mean diantha should be this high. They handed you that Pokémon mostly for mega evolution purposes. If I remember correctly no other game hands a Pokémon as versatile and powerful as a lucario for basically free

What about red? He’s still a champion and if you make the excuse that when you fight him, he’s not the current champion, he is still the final boss for gsc hgss easily destroying Lance.

Kukui gave me a lot of trouble in my first run. I'm still reeling from a near loss when it was down to one vs. one.
Even going into the rematch with Cynthia in Shining Pearl, knowing how strong she is and with memories of her danger from battling her over a decade ago in platinum, Cynthia still gave me a true challenge in the remakes. I prepared going in because I remembered just now challenging she can be, but was still surprised at the difficulty. Needless to say I’m glad she was still tough as she should be.

I feel like these kinda lists are hard to make. Trainers like Iris who use smart strategies like having items and strong pokemon would rank higher, but power creep makes trainers like Leon and Diantha better by default just because of Megas, Dynamax and a change in how these battles are handled. If it was based on how difficult they were in-game, Iris was much harder to beat than Diantha(M-Lucario being handed to you).
Sterling iris was such an easy champion and I’ve never liked her like dragon trainer my ass, half her team isn’t even dragon wtf 😭😂
@@domenicavallone28 Your personal opinion of the character doesn't dictate how difficult a trainer is. Her team is more put together and strategically sound than most others, making her stronger, ESPECIALLY if you are caught off guard. Also, Iris's team is HALF dragon types, the others reptilian. And there really isn't a dragon trainer because lance, not counting duplicates and same evolution line, has only 1 Dragon type on his team. Not really a dragon master when you only train one type of dragon. So your judgment of a good pokemon trainer is flawed.

@@notscorchingsands9718 I don't care what anyone says, Lance is a Flying type trainer. All 6 of his Pokemon are Flying type. He's also wearing a cape like a superhero. Guess what a lot of superheros can do? That's right - FLY! My theory is that Game Freak changed their minds at some point during development and called him a "Dragon Master" to make him sound like more of a scary and threatening character to the kids playing the game. "Flying Master" just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

While this is a fine list, I think the order is wildly inconsistent at times. While teams are a big part of what makes a Champion strong, the context behind facing them should be more prioritized. For example, on paper, Diantha seems to have a more diverse and well rounded team than Lance, but you fight Lance after you fight Clair whose highest leveled Pokémon is likely higher than yours at level 41 with no reliable way to grind due to no trainers on Victory Road. That alone makes Lance more formidable. Also, even if some Champions have more diverse teams, that diversity means nothing when they don’t take advantage of it. Trace may be more well rounded than Lance or Steven, but all his mons only have 3 moves. Even if Lance uses 3 of the same mon, those mons are Dragonites, a very strong and hard to take down Pokémon to begin with. Someone like Leon may also have a diverse team, but the moves used for coverage are normally quite weak mixed with highly questionable AI decisions that makes him less daunting as a Champion than those lower on the list.

But yeah his argument for lance was that all of his pokemon are flying. Well there aren't really any good ice moves at that time, rock types would just completely get wrecked by him, and his dragonites all can tank an electric attack.

100% Lance is worse than Diantha. You can prepare for his team because you know all his typings. Diantha has a way more well versed team that actually decent diversity on it. She's not the strongest by any means but Lance is definitely not that hard if you have a Feraligatr, Jynx, or Lapras. Or Ampharos if you want Gyarados gone. All these Pokemon I mentioned, are super popular Pokemon that a lot of people will use when facing Lance. Unless you were me as a little kid and tried to cheese it with a Typhlosion lol.
@@MysticUmbreon What I meant is that on paper Lance is easier, but the actual fight is much more difficult. The fact that you basically only have the Victory Road to grind low level 40s Pokemon while Diantha not only is in a relatively easier game but also has the EXP share making this fight even easier is the primary reason. Though, another reason why I feel Lance is more difficult is because you never know which of his Dragonites he is actually using unless it's his ace. Gyarados or most water types are a good choice with a strong Ice move until his Thunder Dragonite outspeeds and one shots it.
lance's 2 weaker dragonites also come with coverage being thunder and blizzard so water types with ice moves can be taken care of. and the strongest one has fire blast which can take care of ice types. also keep in mind that ice beam is very hard to obtain before post game and the ice types aren't very fast and some are even frail which can be taken care of by aerodactyl, charizard or fire blast/outrage dragonite. I had a Mamoswine in Soul Silver and he still took a lot more effort to beat than diantha. and I chose greninja as my starter in XY.
@@MysticUmbreon I have used Feraligatr on almost every playthrough of HGSS and Lance was never easy. The one time where lance wasn't that hard, was when i had feraligatr with ice fang and a mamoswine, after i grinded for like 4 hours total ...

you have severely underestimated the power of champion Iris.
Lance might be typically and level-wise the weakest, but to me he still embodies the idea of a Champion. He actually got around and did stuff and you knew immediately who he was and what he was.
Meanwhile, Diantha barely exists and does nothing to help solve the plot of XY at all. Alder tries and FAILS, but Diantha doesn't even try, she's busy being a movie star or something.
Cynthia is the best, objectively. She has the strongest team, factoring coverage and IVs, and she actually does stuff.
diantha isn't the only one do people even mention iris doing anything as a champion?she is probably the msot forgotten. in terms of having a good team (which is very important) Diantha would beat Lance

I've always found hgss Lance to be the 2nd hardest. Even when having an ice type. Primarily cause i don't grind on wild pokemon and always end up underleveled. Thought there's an easy work around. Just make sure the red Gyarados reaches lvl 46 to get dragon dance and you can sweep

Yeah, It took several tries to defeat the Indigo League in Heartgold. I was about ten, maybe twelve, so I didn’t exactly have a diverse moveset for my Pokémon. Ultimately, I swapped my Golem for my Tyranitar ( he was still a Larvitar, so I had to do more leveling up) because I discovered that his Pokémon knew Ice moves and Golem was weak to said moves. It was tough, but I worked hard for that Champion title.
I feel that Diantha is the easiest champion of them all, but X and Y makes it the longest game I finish (almost 20 hrs). I got lost to my way to second gym, the 3d effect confuse me a lot since it makes me enter to the place I don't wanna go and sudden sitting wven if you don't want to sit makes it so frustrating. 😂

He also doesn't take into account the pokemon available in each region. That has huge influence on how prepared you can be for the champion battle. Which explains why Diantha looks good on paper, but also everyone goes through her with ease.

I still remember battling Cynthia...
My last pokemon was Torterra. She still had Garchomp and Lucario left. Her Garchomp used earthquake and my Torterra had 1hp left. But the earthquake used by my Torterra resulted in a critical hit and her Garchomp fainted. But then came her Lucario and I thought I was gone. But to my luck my Torterra striked first thanks to quick claw and I defeated her Lucario with earthquake in 1shot finally defeating Cynthia.

@@jovan7939 good sales doesn't mean anything. It was just a moneygrab to get GO players into console and another gen 1 remake. It had some good features but the difficulty was ridiculous and I dont know why they removed the abilities.
