    I appreciate this film, but since I am self teaching as well.. over the last year, I do believe that teaching traditional soldering with cutting the pallions, and placing them properly, would be more beneficial for a newbie. Because it matters even more where the torch placement is, and learning not to take to long, because of carbon building up... which then nothing will flow. The paste heats so fast, that it's nothing at all like cutting solder pallions, and correctly placing them. And learning how to draw it through the join. I think you always seem to use paste. Seems a lot of clean up too, on the jump rings with paste. As you say, it goes everywhere. Thank you.

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback. We have a handful of classes where we solder with pallions (just released one today). I think it comes down to personal preference.

    I dabble in silversmithery (lol... just made up a new word!?) and therefore have long lapses in my need for soldering. Does paste solder dry out or lose effectiveness over time, or should I be using sheet solder & flux if I'm not doing it often?

      Not sure what ParaWire is, but we do not recommend using silver filled. Use caution, it melts fast. If you want to practice before using Sterling, use Copper instead. It's the closest to sterling and way cheaper ;)

    You guys have great tutorials! However, in this one there is an error. In regard to pickle, contaminated pickle will remove firescale. The problem is that it will also copperplate anything you put into it so if you are using it for silver, you'll have a problem. I keep a contaminated batch in a separate crockpot for use when I get silver solder on a copper piece or when the copper solder is heated too much and turns silver. It does however, still remove the firescale.

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  8 лет назад

      +Dianne Culbertson-Jacques Hi Dianne! Thanks for the comment. And, you bring up a great point. Our understanding is that when your steel ( maybe your tweezers) come into contact with your copper contaminated pickle it creates a copper plating bath. You must have stainless in your contaminated pot and that is why that is happening, if that is the case then yes. It is a very neat technique to cover silver solder on copper jewelry. Have a great day, and thanks for watching!

    • @DianneCulbertsonJacques
      @DianneCulbertsonJacques 8 лет назад +3

      +Beaducation I dropped steel wool into it on purpose. When I first began soldering I did not like the silver solder on my copper. I had read that you NEVER put steel into your pickle so I thought. "Oh, what the heck, let's see what happens". That's just how I am. So now I have a pot of pickle I can use to copperplate if need be and my good pickle for the rest. :)

    Is it wrong that i use a saw to cut the rings rather than a snip type cutter? I find there is far less waste and all the ends line up flat. I started making them for chain mail type work and am now looking into silver work as well.

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  9 лет назад +2

      Jeff Connery no it is not wrong, it is perfect! Here we are showing how to make quick jump rings but you are completely right. To make a bunch of them and to make them with a tiny seam, using a jewelers saw is best.

    You can literally use hard solder for all of that work and far more complex work as well. You are trying to sell things or you just aren’t that good of a metalsmithing. You are saying that you want to solder three little discs together but you say you will start with medium? I paused the video so I don’t know where you are going with this but I paused it to come here to say that all of that clumsy big work should always be done with hard solder. What if you are making a ring that is worth enough money for a person to actually make money doing this rather than waste it buying shot they don’t need and following directions from a teacher that never could figure out how to actually make a living selling their own jewelry so they had to begin “teaching” other people the same stuff that led to their failure in the first place. Those who cannot do and all of that. If anyone has read this far. First you would not ever want to use paste solder to solder these discs together unless you did not have anything else. Second use hard solder for all of them regardless if it is sheet or paste or wire solder. Medium and easy solder have their place and it is not here. She is teaching how to make crafts for retired people. She is not teaching how to make jewelry that is worth money, jewelry that people will keep their entire life and pass on to their children. That kind of work requires one to do everything they can in hard or medium solder with the mind that at some point the piece may need to be repaired because that is the nature of wear and tear on a piece of metal that is worn often or daily. Don’t listen to this person. Do everything in hard solder until you can no longer do it. Melt some shit to find out how far you can go and always remember that just because you melted it here this time you will learn why and get further next time. People make extremely complex and beautiful pieces of jewelry that they need to use a microscope to work in and they use only hard solder. Ask yourself if you are doing crafts or making jewelry.

      Thanks for your feedback. The main purpose of this video is to teach beginners and to show them examples of when you might use a variety of solders.
