All that painstaking polishing of metal samples for microstructure analysis really paid off. This is so similar, just a little more complicated yet more forgiving. Thank you for such a detailed explanation!
Joe, that was the BEST! You HEAR so much about how to do this but until you get it right yourself from EXPERIENCE, it's a mystery. The sequence of real-life polishing was INVALUABLE! Thanks so much!
Have joined silversmithing class 2 times a week and have just bought a Dremel. Need to polish my pieces at home and your help and advice is just what I was looking for. Have bought the micro dremel as I am a "granny" now and a little scared of tools. I will upgrade when I know what I am doing! Many many thanks. I bought your first book after seeing some of your videos. Great teacher!
Only just found this video and it addressed, very clearly, a number of questions and issues I had with polishing - like polishing in tight spaces and removing solder without filing. It's also the first one I've seen showing how best to control the flexishaft - I was constantly flipping jewellery out of my hands or managing to create new marks with the mandrel itself.
Thanks Joe for a great video. I just dug out my Dad's dremel, and had no idea where to begin to use it for my jewelry making. This video has taught me so much. Can't wait to get home and pull out the dremel and start polishing........
Thank you so much for this great tutorial on polishing! This has always been one of the most challenging aspects for me in doing my wire and metal work, which was always an area my teachers glossed over in classes. Your detailed instruction on wheels, grits and technique are invaluable!
I loved this so much! I recently purchased a Dremel, it‘s my first polishing tool and I was too scared to use it and had no clue which polishing bits to get. This helped me a lot! Plus: I love the jewelry shown here. The ring with the winter tree scenario? So pretty. And the little house pendant? Absolutely cute.
Wish I lived close to learn from you in person, Never the less I learned a lot and can’t wait to show my husband who makes really cool jewelry as well but wanted to know how to get rid of some of the solder. Thanks so much! LOVE BEADUCATION! and you of course.
Wow! I learned so much from this video. This was exactly what I was looking for. As a learner of soldering and metalworking, I have so much to explore and learn. Even though this tutorial is nearly five years old, it is very relevant and informative. Thank you for making this video.
Thanks so much Dee! Yeah, the technology in hand polishing hasn't really evolved in a long time. These are old tried and true techiques! And hey, if you haven't already, please consider subscribing to our channel to learn more :) goo.gl/XS9hu1
GREAT instructional video on polishing!!!. I was baffled by all those wheels and discs that came with my FlexShaft. Thank you for demystifying this process.
Great tutorial - exactly what I was looking for. I am new to silversmithing and the correct steps to follow have eluded me!!! Thank you for showing the process in steps!!! You are a great instructor - very detailed and easy to follow!
WOW!! What a great, detailed instructional video! I was looking for an instructional video which explained the Radial Bristles. I have the silicone polishing wheels and wasn't 100% sure how to use them. I can't wait to purchase new polishing wheels!! Beaducation...Your videos rock!!
What do you recommend using for getting a mirror finish on completely flat pieces? I have some flat pieces that originally had a mirror finish but got some minor scratches. I tried the 1 micron spiral wheels, but they can't remove the scratches. I then tried the 6 micron wheels. These removed the scratches. After removing the scratches with the 6 micron wheels, I used the 1 micron ones, but I could not get the original mirror finish.
Hi, To get closer to a mirror finish I work through these sanding papers: www.beaducation.com/zen_products/5402-wet-dry-sanding-paper-mixed-grit-pack. To really reach the mirror finish you need a buffing wheel and a compound like rouge. We don't sell those product, but here is a vid I found that talks about them: ruclips.net/video/GBdPaEjSXwk/видео.html.
wow...thanks for such an informative video with such logical and detailed instructions...you just gave new life to my Dremel. Look forward to what others you may offer.
This was a great tutorial. Wish I'd found it earlier in my learning process. Really, really helpful in understand which tools to use for different applications on one piece. Thanks so much.
This is very well done, really appreciate all the information. I recently purchased a flexible shaft machine and am left-handed. Is this going to be a problem for me? I mostly repair, restore & sharpen knives and repair & restore antique Connecticut clocks. Thanks...
Nicely done video, so informative! I've bought a lot of vintage jewelry, some that I want to polish up a bit. Got a dremel but needed to know what bits to use. This helped a LOT! Thanks!
Exactly, all you need is the right size chuck and likely the one that came with your Dremel is already the right size. Radials are amazing...changed my life!
Check out our video, How to Remove Excess Solder. Regarding your firescale question, you can use Penny Brite, Citric Acid, Sparex and simply sand it off.
Hi Joe & thank you for this informative video. I just purchased an economy flex shaft & it came with no instructions about anything. I found myself online & trying to order what I may need & I honestly didn't have any clue! I wanted to find a "getting started" type of a kit & had no luck. I'm excited about checking out the Beaducation site to see what you guys offer. I am very glad that I'm a little more informed!
Great video....Ive watched it many times! I work in sterling silver metal clay...when I have a scratch I don't seem to be able to remove scratch with silicone wheels and if I use a strong sandpaper then I am left with a brushed finish that I can't rid of with the silicone wheels and radials....any suggestions? Thanks! Margot
Hummmm, that is a tough one. If the scratch is deep enough, it will be hard to buff out. I am surprised that silicone wheels or radials are not buffing it back to a nice brighter finish. Are you sure you are using the lightest grit silicone wheels at the end? Some are rougher than others and you need to kinda work through the grits in order. You can't go straight from brushed finish to the finest grit, you should use them one by one to get to the that smooth finish. I hope that makes sense :)
I work in Clay as well and the silicone seems to "muck up" technical term...with material… I usually start with a fresh disk or refresh The surface of the silicone disc with a rougher sandpaper
This was so informative and communicated so well. I knew they were all used for something, but to know exactly what, and when in the process is so exciting. Now maybe I will not be afraid to use my flex shaft! Thank you.

I'd recommend tagging Foredom in this video. I purchased a kit 6 months ago for woodwork and only just now found this video when searching for rock polishing info. Just my opinion. Thanks.
Hi Andy! You do not need to if you go through the radial wheels all the way to the 1 micro wheel. But, you can also give it a last buff with rough if you would like! Have a great day!
In other words, are radial disks and silicone disks a substitute for felt wheels with compound, or must they still be used to achieve the highest finish possible?
80 might be a little more aggressive than necessary to start, but the concept is correct - you need to go through a series of low to high number grits. The lower number does the heavy lifting and then following up with increasingly higher number grits works the surface back to smooth.
I'm left handed so does the polishing direction stay the same, not sure if the discs are runing in the same direction if using opposite hands....if you see what I mean..cheers
Excellent presentation - thanks so much. Would you use either red or black rouge on a muslin wheel on the Flex Shaft after the Green Radial, or would this be redundant? Thanks

Hi! Thank you for your question. When you say "patina" are you referring tarnish? If so, there are many factors that come into play in the time that it takes for your metal to tarnish. You may want to seal the metal after polishing, or keep your jewelry in a dry place.
One question: I use a hammer hand piece to set some of my bezels. Sometimes I just can't get the marks from the setting smooth without getting THROUGH the thin gauge bezel wire- then its a throw away! What is the trick to get back to smooth after using a hammer handpiece?

+Juan Valdez Hi Juan! You can find the Polishing Pins and Pin Holders can be found here: www.beaducation.com/product_categories/283-polishing-wheels-pins-cylinders Have a great day!
Yes, it will. I've finished a chainmail bracelet project in stainless steel. I finished it by buffing and polishing it with a Dremel type motor and handpiece I bought on Amazon for about $40. After deburring by hand sanding and micromesh, I used Black Tripoli + cotton wheel to buff out scratches. Then I used bristle wheels and soft cotton mops with Red Rouge, Green and White polishing compounds to get the final mirror finish. I got a sparkling finish on a detailed bracelet with lots of nooks and crannies once I used the nylon bristle wheels. Along with wool fluffy mops, this setup did the job. One downside of using cotton or wool is the fluff released into the air. Modern alternatives like the nylon bristle brushes and the radial brushes produce less dust, but you should wear a face mask or use a good dust extractor whilst polishing to avoid getting fine metal and compound dust into your lungs.

Are you using any buffing compound ?
Not for these specific techniques.
Will this also polish stainless steel?
We aren't really familiar with working with stainless. We work with soft metals mainly.

Can you use these tools on 14K gold filled?
Yes you can! You may want to keep your tools separate if you are working with a variety of metals. There can be some cross contamination on things like files and can cause issues when soldering.
