This was perhaps THE best tutorial I've ever watched. You did an amazing job of educating me on this subject! Way to go!
Truly excellent tutorial. It's one we've strongly recommend to emerging jewelers over the past year. This is a "must-have" for their education library. Thanks so much.
Very helpful. I am taking a class and we don't have time for all this involved work, so this was a great find. Will be back to watch and learn more.
Great Barbara, I am glad this was helpful! Make sure to subscribe for more jewelry making vids!!! goo.gl/29bmpC
So easy to learn from this guy his calm voice and demeanor is everything for the beginner! Thank you if your listening! Your voice hypnotized me.☺️
That look so beautiful, and it seems fairly easy. I am going to try it right this minute.

Anxious to try this....
Thanks so much! It's a fun one! I love how you can "prong" anything!!! Hey, if you haven't already, please consider subscribing to our channel to learn more :) goo.gl/XS9hu1
That's a fabulous tutorial, thanks for sharing. It was easy to see the whole pick-soldering process and make sense of the metal/flux/solder relationship. The finished pieces are attractive as well.
I LOVE YOUR INSTRUSTIONS!!THIS VIDEOS IS GREAT!!THANK YOU!!
This was a great tutorial! Very detailed, clear images & lots of technical info! As always, Joe Silvera delivers the goods! I already own your first book on soldering and have the second on my wish list. Thanks, Joe

Great video, very clear instructions. Thanks
Thanks for the tute! I like the stamped end of the prong idea/look much better than plain...especially for these types of stones.
Excellent tutorial, I have just the stone I want to try this on.
Great! Enjoy :)
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! I will be watching more!
Thanks. I am brand new to soldering and I learned a lot

This is excellent information and video Thanks so much
You are very welcome!
great tutorial, awesome teacher... Joe is awesome..
Really great and really simple lovely and easy to follow, most encouraging thankyou!
Wow, great video ! Several great tips! thank you for taking the time to show us the tip of picking up solder, yellow ocher paint (or to just dirty the other solder joints), taking the time to after your project was finished to explain the what ifs? (prongs too long or too short). Thank you again, excellent job :-)
You are welcome Anne! Thanks for the great feedback!
I absolutely love this video. Thank you.
This was SO helpful, so many good tips - thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Realy interesting,and good information
So nice of you. Thank you for your feedback.
I enjoy this technique, for there are many stones that are lovely front and back. Or, simply too bulky or awkward to go into a bezel cup, and lovely as they are without being further cut.
Fantastic. I benefitted and intend to do right away..........which now - a year later - I’ve made a half dozen or more. The hardest was a tiny genuine arrowhead. Larger is easier......And I’m better at pick soldering now.
very helpful - thank you for such clear instrucyions
Making more now. Good video. Thanks.
Thank you very much, very detail video
You add a jump ring.

Oh, you make it look so easy!
thank you very much just what I was looking for!
Nice video so clear and informative
Great video, thank you so much!
thanks so much!!!! so clear!
Thank you , this technique will be very useful to me.
Thanks so much I love these I'll be making these this weekend
I am surprised you did not get any fire scale from this. Maybe when I am using my torch it's got a larger flame and that's what I am doing wrong.
Thank you for a great lesson. =)
Ty❤
This is a terrific video. Thank you very much!
Personally, I would use the straight prongs on a stone with a lot going on in it, and reserve the flattened, fancier ends for plainer stones. That's obviously a matter of preference, though.
Nice video...thanks!
lovely prongs
Very good teacher
Thanks so much!!!
Thank you for sharing:)
great vid!
Excellent video
Thanks!!!
My first time learning about free form prong setting. Took notes verbatum style. One question what is pickling ? Is it cooling down the ring and then cleaning it in what liquid specifically ?
Krisinda Boyce pickling is when you soak your piece in a solution that removes the fire scale that the heat causes. "Quenching" is cooling your piece down by tossing it in water. Check out the video on this product for more info :) beaducation.com/zen_products/900-little-dipper-pickle-pot
Thank you for the answer and tutorial. Crystal clear and understood :)
Great tutorial. Just wondering- do you recommend using some sort of fan while soldering to avoid inhaling the fumes?
+Serena S We recommend you work in a well ventilated area. We also offer a Fume Absorber through our website. You can check it out here: www.beaducation.com/zen_products/5124-smoke-fume-absorber
Have a great day!
great video! what size stamp did you use? im seeing mainly 6 mm stamps for sale, which seems too big.
Hi Josh. I can't find the point where he uses a stamp, can you send me the time stamp of that part of the video? In the meantime, we now have our stamps on our site listed by size (at the largest dimension), you can find smaller stamps here www.beaducation.com/pc/98-metal-stamping-tools-metal-design-stamps?utf8=✓&qry=&choices%5B220%5D=on&choices%5B221%5D=on&sort_order=Newest
it doesnt actually show him using the stamp, it just shows after its done. i havent been able to find stamps smaller than 3 mm, it looks like his is maybe 1.5mm from looking at the design in his hand. shows at 23:24. will check your link.
your link helped, found what i was looking for thanks!!
What MOHS scale should be the minimum so I don’t use stones that can’t take being exposed to wear and tear. In other words how do I know which stones can take being in a setting like this ?
Humm, I’m not sure there’s an easy answer to that. It would depend on more than the hardness. The thickness of the stone or the shape of the edge will be factors.
I am now trying to do this project with copper wire and copper wire solder that doesn't need flux. Having hard time getting it to flow. Should I still use Handy flux ? Or is handy flux preventing it from flowing ?
I find that I still need flux when working with solder wire.
Beaducation yes realized that also. By trial and error I'll get it right. Thank you
I have a question about bending the prongs. Especially if the piece has been tumbled won't it be quite hard? Wouldn't you risk crunching into the stone? How do you make sure you don't damage the stone when the prongs are bent? Thank you.
Hi Marian, sorry for the late reply, a bunch of comments got hidden, very odd. Anyway, you just have to make sure you place the very gently and you don't work with a stone or object that is too soft or fragile.
Good job, but how do you hang that pendant when there is no bail? The jump ring isn't orientated correctly for a chain.
Add a jump ring:)

I'd like to find out more about your school, how?
Hi Ilene, You can find our complete library of classes on our website. They are all free! www.beaducation.com/learn
Thank you.
I tried to put in my e-mail and it says it's "invalid"?
Hi! The link I listed is to our website. We are an online retailer, and have over 100 free online classes. If you click on the link, it will take you straight to our website. www.beaducation.com/learn . Thank you!
Made one, not as perfect as yours, but still nice.
What is pickle?
Perhaps this will help :) beaducation.com/product_videos/65-sparex-pickling-compound
This is so confusing! What size gauge of wire, what size gauge of solder wire, does "handy flux" go bad, what size of solder pieces to use, can I use silver solder paste... I am so overwhelmed and all I want to do is create!
There sure is a lot to learn eh! I say just dive in. Here is a list of all the tools and materials used for the class. As for solder paste, that seems to be a personal preference. Joe prefers wire solder, but you could try paste, it might work. Maybe practice in copper wire first while playing around. Good luck :)
Scottie Weber .....watch it again. Most of your questions are answered in the video.
I learned so much! I have to leave a comment thanking you for this tremendously informal tutorial.
