Great to see numbers on fresh batteries. Come back after 100 or so discharge/charge cycles and report on the capacity. You examined only 1 small part of the overall cost.
It's hard to beat DSTE (for any camera system) for price/performance indeed. As I've already said, DSTE are the only third-party batteries I use now for my both Nikon and Fuji cameras at home, and also for a bunch of Panasonics (GH3/4/5/5s) at work. They have proved to be quite reliable over the years - they don't loose the capacity fast and dont swell with time like many off-brand batteries do.
Great roundup! Though, I'd be very interested to see a 6mo-1yr follow-up to see how these hold up after multiple uses. By the way, good job on the infographics. Nice bit of polish and very useful!
When there was a drought in 3rd party batteries for the a7iii (except for the sold out and much too expensive wasabis) I went with a bunch of King-Mah batteries off of Ali Express. They took some time to get in, but I've been quite happy with their performance so far!
And the result will most likely be exactly the same :) DSTE batteries are the only non-originals I use now for my both Nikon and Fuji cameras at home, and also for a bunch of Panasonics (GH3/4/5/5s) at work. They have proved to be quite reliable over years - they don't loose the capacity fast and dont swell with time like many off-brand batteries do.
"The DSTE backup power Kit features two batteries and a dual charging dock let your journey always powerful" with only 10 reviews on Amazon but a great review by you, I will give them a try. I have BM FW50 batteries for some other sonys and they don't hold a charge at all. The best thing about them was the charger I can use in my car. let your journey always powerful
Really appreciate you taking the time to do such an in depth review. This is probably the best review for any camera equipment I have seen based on how much time it must have taken! FOR BATTERIES!!! Respect to you. It's a like and subscribe from me.
You are the man, I almost ordered a pair of wasabi batteries earlier today. I used DSTE on my canon and they worked great. So looks like you saved me again.
A recent Amazon review is stating that the newest Sony A7III Firmware 3.10 is giving a warning with the DSTE battery. Have you had any (major) problems using 3rd-party batteries with updated Sony firmware? Or is it just a scare tactic? It would be cool to revisit this topic since people are continuing to buy the A7III. Thanks! And great videos as always!
Thanks, I have both A7RIII and A7III and both the Meike and Sony grips, so yes I could use some extra batteries to go along with my four Sony batteries. Cheers
To my knowledge, something that's fairly important but hard to test is how betteries lose capacity over time. There a many brands that can make a decent capacity unit at the beginning of it's life, but will lose it quickly. The quality of the charger is also important and it 's probably better to buy the original one despite using third party batteries. I use Patona batteries on the GH5 and always charge them with the original one. They a pretty close the the capacity of tue lumix battery and after one year seem to be good as new. I also try to do full charge-discharge cicle most of the time, I guess that helps as well.
Hey Caleb, long time fan here. Awesome video, also highly appreciate the more humorous approach and funny touches, more of that will speed up your growth I think!
Much appreciated Caleb! Love the use of Metal Gear enemy alert SFX, especially when you upped the pitch for the charger! (awesome touch, had me laughing). Keep up the wonderful work and information. Till next time!
BRUH, when you said "It doesn't come with a charger"..... I ordered a damn OEM battery I thought the camera would at least come with a battery charger! I'm shoooktih.... WHy did I buy this camera in 2020
When I got my GH5 I bought a bunch of 3rd party batteries. Then weird stuff started happening. My GH5's monitor started flickering regardless of battery strength. So, I've since bought Panasonic made batteries. Yes, it cost me more money. But, now, no more flickering or any other issues.
My GH5 fell into "I'll kill my shutter now" mode when it was powered by one of the 3rd party batteries and I was shooting photos. I guess the battery failed to hold the required current/voltage for the mechanical shutter to properly open and close, the shutter was doing several unsuccessful attempts to cycle properly per second, monitor went all stripy and camera stopped reacting to anything. I had to pull out the battery to stop this madness and I never used that battery again. I can imagine GH5 killing its shutter pretty quickly if left unattended shooting time lapses with mechanical shutter on and a 3rd party battery in.
So I ended up taking your recommendation from the livestream you did a few weeks back and got the a7iii! And you did a fantastic job with this review. So detailed, and helpful, but I had already purchased some other 3rd party batteries lol. The camera will be here tomorrow, I am pumped to get back to work!
Hey Caleb! Long time fan, i check in every 2 -3 days for new videos and sometimes end up watching hours of your great content! One thought I had is, if someone comes across your video and likes the setup you are shooting with (in this video you mentioned its the a7III) maybe you could start a new thing in the description of each video in text , of what camera+lens you are using and any additional lights used, just incase you maybe have not verbally mentioned it in the video. Thanks for all your hard work!
Damn, I really love all your videos, it's like video/photography gear school. My primary language is spanish, however your english is so sweet and I understand everything you say. Thank you for all your videos because even do I just have a nikon d3300 I have learned a lot of things from your videos and purchase different stuffs on internet based on your recommendations. Thank you DSLR Video Shooter
Third party batteries deteriorate much quicker than official ones. If you're a working professional batteries should be your least of concerns. So If you can drop 2K on a camera you can sneeze few more on original battery.
So one big thing is missing here. something critical... this are all brand new batteries. How long they can keep this power. What happens after one month, or three months of daily usage and recharge? Also how reliable is the percentage information after that time? People forget that...
This is cool, but the longevity and accuracy of battery left overtime is what I’m more concerned about. The DSTE might hold half the battery a few years down the road.
Nice Video! I have two powerextra batteries and a dual charger which all together cost me $33 and the batteries are very comparable power-wise

Hey Caleb, I'm trying to buy the battery grip, but your link directs me to Italian Amazon and I do not understand anything and somehow I can not change the language to anything I speak. Anyway I do want to support your channel, so if you update the link I would buy it from there.
Hey Caleb, I'm going to be running around with the a7iii on a monopod and was wondering a battery bank and running usb C into the camera would be a good option for getting some more time without using batteries. Any estimation on how long the camera would run based on a 5000mah battery pack?
I'd love to be able to spend a little less on the FZ100 batteries but I figure in the long run it's probably just worth it to spend the $78 on the Sony batteries. For lasting performance and overall reliability I think it makes the most sense. After all it's a $2k camera body and spending about 4% that for an extra battery and again around 4% for the external charger really isn't a bad deal at all for the technology you're using it with.
Pretty awesome, thanks for testing these out, I didn’t have any other options when I got the camera, so I already own 4 of the original battery’s 😅 But will certainly look at the cheaper options when I buy my next one 👊🏻
thank you amazing video and SUPER helpful i think im going to buy the sony brand battery but USED from adorama because its only $42 or so which doesnt seem so bad.
Thanks great review. The dste here is 25 including a charger... As per the Meike battery grip i would be very careful i had it for two month and got various file errors, funky changes on camera shutter, random freeze. And if you look on blogs you'll find this problem well acknowledged with previous grips for other Sony cameras. Watch out.
More than cost per hour, for me the biggest reason to get original Sony batteries is just because they maintain their ability to recharge efficiently for a lot longer. I haven’t done any scientific tests or anything, but I used five batteries while my A7II was my main camera - two were original sony, and then others were wasabi. One of the wasabi batteries ended up getting a little bloated to where it wouldn’t even fit in the camera, and the other two hardly last at all and drop from like 50% to zero in a matter of minutes. The Sony batteries still work great, even though they’ve probably seen the heaviest use out of the five. Granted, I beat the heck out of my batteries and they spend a lot of time in hot backpacks in the sun and stuff like that, so maybe you can get away with lesser batteries if you’re just in a studio setting or something, but now that I upgraded to the A7riii, I’m sticking to original batteries just because I think it’ll pay off in the long run.
Can anyone explain this/ I’ve recently bought a original z battery for my a7iii but I noticed that the one that came with the camera when I bought it says us and canada and Japan but the new one I bought from Best Buy (same place i bought the camera) it only says Japan. Can anyone explain why & if it’s okay too keep
Dropping , li bo battery's , isn't a wise thing to do .... they aren't impact damage resistant ! Hours of single run time ..... is one thing but remember how many total charges it can last ! is the cost effectiveness :)
I was using 3rd party batteries for several months now and got the warning and was allowed to continue to use them, but since yesterday with out doing any firmware updates, the camera says I cannot use the battery and then shuts down…? WTF. I should be able to risk breaking my camera or not. But now they are not working at all. Anybody else have this problem…??
I Bought the Battery powerextra 2 pack with charger one month ago and yesterday I got notifications on my screen operation and safety of :this battery cannot be guaranteed.Continue use?Ok and Cancel options.Anyone face similar problem? What do you suggest to keep them or throw them?I Don't want to damaged my camera.Thanks.
uzun vadede şarj adedine ve performans düşüşüne bakmak lazım. ilk zamanlarda tamam iyidi bir noktadan sonra şarj bile olmuyorlar yada 5 dakika da şarjları bitmeye başlıyor
I purchased the 3D modeling pieces free m shapeway. Is there a tutorial putting thes parts together fir the case? I’m extremely excited about creating & finishing this case
Will there be an updated video for battery tests when the a7 IV comes out? I've bought the DSTE's from your recommendation, but since the v3 update the battery warning popup keeps appearing. So i wonder now if any of the 3rd party batteries fixed that.
Phew! That was a lot of start/stop button pushing! When we gonna get unlimited recording Sony???
when sony removes the tax restriction.
videos are recorded divided in different files? theres any lost informations between those cuts?
There's a hack, it works perfectly.
can you elaborate?
OpenMemories does not work on the a7 III, a7R III or a9 as they do not have the apps.
Great to see numbers on fresh batteries. Come back after 100 or so discharge/charge cycles and report on the capacity. You examined only 1 small part of the overall cost.

No problem! Hope you are well friend.

If you make a video like this but about the Panasonic batteries I will love you like there's no tomorrow

I've beening using Wasabi and Newmowa and its been pretty good. No file corruptions but they do last a little shorter than the original Panasonic.
Fstoppers did a great one here: ruclips.net/video/mTym5UDdNaI/видео.html

Got 100 shot s on the first battery. Not where near a Sony. But I can use the two while I charge the original.
This man always gives the most practical and realistic reviews!

Great video as always!! Was just about to buy some batteries and you've helped me with my decision :)
Great video Caleb. I was wary of purchasing an aftermarket battery for the a7iii but for those prices it's definitely worth a shot!
You are the man, I almost ordered a pair of wasabi batteries earlier today. I used DSTE on my canon and they worked great. So looks like you saved me again.
really love how you are developing your video style (music, intro, lighting) currently. great video and keep up the good work!

Useful test, saves us the work to buy lots of different batteries ourselves. Looking forward to that a7iii guide and battery grip test.
Much appreciated Caleb! Love the use of Metal Gear enemy alert SFX, especially when you upped the pitch for the charger! (awesome touch, had me laughing). Keep up the wonderful work and information. Till next time!
I shall use these batteries for the Sony A74 and Sony A7siii
revisiting this video, the wasabi power batts are now $55 for 2 w/ dual charger. Would you say Wasabi is back on top as far as FZ100 batteries?
Agree DSTE are the best. I use them with my Canon.
BRUH, when you said "It doesn't come with a charger"..... I ordered a damn OEM battery I thought the camera would at least come with a battery charger! I'm shoooktih.... WHy did I buy this camera in 2020
Well done! I’ll be picking up a couple of these as backups! Big thanks
I appreciated the little circle graphics nice touch

Awesome Review. Thank You Brother!
This is a great help to narrow down my hunt. Thanks Caleb! :)
Yup your the man! I can always count on you to keep pumping original content and things that everyone wants to know.
Party on Wayne 🤘
Such a great video! Helped me a ton. The dual usb charger you mentioned actually now comes with TWO of the Newmowa batteries for $89.99 CDN!
Great video ! Original will work fine after a year of use but cheaper options will not ! Get the original !
Excellent video, very professional and clear, thanks a lot.

Who the hell gave this a dislike?? Sony themselves?? 😂😂
Awesome video. Loved the format
Super helpful, thanks!
Waiting on that guide! I got the G85 guide and g7 now waiting on the A7iii
Can't wait for the camera guide! Once I get an a7iii I'll buy the guide!

Adding yet more gear. Really appreciate your thorough test and recommendation. Will use the affiliate link. Ry from Dubai
Good stuff!!
He is right dste. Best value i use them can't go wrong. They are a big accessory mfg not just anyone
Perfect timing! I was about to look look for spare batteries! Thanks Caleb! I'll use your affiliate links!
Third party batteries deteriorate much quicker than official ones. If you're a working professional batteries should be your least of concerns. So If you can drop 2K on a camera you can sneeze few more on original battery.
Not much quicker for me at least (definitely not four times quicker). Like he said, if you have the money go with the originals.
Chosen Idea I have used several 3rd party back in my Canon days and they never seem to retain their power. Wast of money and wast of time .
The DSTE might hold half the battery a few years down the road.
thank you very muchhhh !!!!
Do DSTE batteries show the remaining battery charge % on the latest firmware update, i know alot give unsafe battery warnings and dont display the %
You are the man for doing this!
Nice Video! I have two powerextra batteries and a dual charger which all together cost me $33 and the batteries are very comparable power-wise

Has something happened with DSTE overall? I can't even find any of their batteries listed on Amazon.
The original, for 58 euros it's ok for me...thank you so much!

Hi,Can you please let me know how is battery working on the Sony A7iii ?
Thanks,
@@8772884 Hey bro, So I got these a couple of weeks ago and they are working great. Not noticed any difference with respect to the original battery
@@LucasGuanes much appreciated bro 👍🍻
Yasssss Caleb this is what we needed

This is informative and useful, DSLR Video Shooter. Thank you.
Would be great for last one list of all batteries in one screen for fast compare
Nice! More A7III content, please!
Definitely more on the way!
Fantastic, hoping to get your guide when it's out too!
I am having difficult trying to find the right battery plate to attach it to a universal charger. Can someone please help?

the crazy thing is that the mAh ratings on the batteries don't seem to correlate to how long the battery will last...So thanks Caleb!
Great information!!
You are awesome thank you very much!
Great Job! Thanks a lot!
sony a 7 iii firmware 3 updated and now i am having problem with third party batterry they are like useless. does any one have same problem ???
The brand "rawpower" is also really good. Quite cheap and even more mAh than the original battery.
Never heard of DSTE. That's awesome.
Great stuff! Thanks for doing the homework!
Thanks mate! You rock!

Hey man. Good video and info. I want to ask if the last ones(dste) get you the compatibility message when you insert them in to the camera? Thanks
Great vid, thanks!
THANKS!
Great information. bravo bravo bravo...
Amazing video , this is perfect
Are there any drawbacks to using a third party battery? like screwing with the software of a shorcuit maybe?

I've bought the DSTE's from your recommendation, but since the v3 update the battery warning popup keeps appearing. So i wonder now if any of the 3rd party batteries fixed that.
I tried 3 brands, I have 4 DSTE batteries NP-FZ100 and only tested two, they both shutdown and corrupt my memory cards at the end.
